Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new environmentally friendly silver electroplating bath, employing 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) and nicotinic acid (NA) as complexing agents, based on the prediction of computational chemistry. An excellent silver electrodeposit with properties suitable for application in electronics packaging was obtained from the newly developed silver electroplating bath, and the electroplating bath is simple and stable. Moreover, the silver(I)-complexes in this bath possessed good complex stability. As a consequence, mirror-bright silver electrodeposits on copper substrates with excellent leveling capability, smooth and compact morphologies, high purity and conductivity, as well as excellent welding property could be realized by adopting this unique bath. Based on the performances of the plating bath and silver deposit, the introduced silver plating bath is a promising candidate for silver electrodeposition applied in microelectronics to replace the conventional cyanide silver electroplating baths.

Abstract:A novel method combined theoretical and experimental study for environmental friendly silver electroplating was introduced. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were employed for predicting the behaviour and function of the complexing agents. Electronic properties, orbital information, and single point energies of the 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH), nicotinic acid (NA), as well as their silver(I)-complexes were provided by quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Adsorption behaviors of the agents on copper and silver surfaces were investigated using MD simulations. Basing on the data of quantum chemical calculations and MD simulations, we believed that DMH and NA could be the promising complexing agents for silver electroplating. The experimental results, including of electrochemical measurement and silver electroplating, further confirmed the above prediction. This efficient and versatile method thus opens a new window to study or design complexing agents for generalized metal electroplating and will vigorously promote the level of this research region.

Abstract:An effective approach is developed to investigate potential complexing agents in Zn-Ni bath by using density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and electrochemical experiments. Pyrophosphate is predicted as the most promising auxiliary complexing agent in introduced DMH based bath compared with other complexing agents owing to its weaker adsorption capacity. The DFT calculations show that the most possible and stable structures for zinc (II) and nickel (II) in the electrolyte are the complexes that with one pyrophosphate and two 5-5'-diethylhydantoins (DMH) as the complexing agents. The electrodeposition mechanism of Zn-Ni alloys in selected DMH-pyrophosphate electrolyte was studied by electrochemical measurements. The effects of Zn content, Ni content and bath temperature in the bath on CV curves were also investigated. The rate controlling rate is determined based on Koutecky-Levich equation and a mixed controlled process is observed. The nucleation mechanism of Zn-Ni alloys is a 3D instantaneous nucleation and the bath temperature has no effect on the nucleation of Zn-Ni alloys. The combined theoretical and experimental tests indicate that pyrophosphate is an excellent auxiliary complexing agent in DMH-based Zn-Ni bath and can also provide an efficient method to study or design complexing agents for other metal electroplating.

Abstract:In this work, in the place of cyanide, a novel alternative of silver ligand, 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (MPS), is introduced for environmentally friendly copper finishing by a galvanic replacement reaction. The bright yellow and transparent MPS-Ag solution exhibits high chemical and thermal stability. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) plots prove the coordination ability of MPS to Ag+ is much stronger than that of ammonia in alkaline solution. By applying different temperatures and solution compositions, various silver deposits were prepared by immersion of silver on copper surface in solutions with MPS. The obtained samples were subjected to morphological and chemical characterizations to analyze the composition of corresponding silver deposits. Experimental results show that, the size of the deposited silver particles is tunable by controlling the concentration of Cl− and temperature. Additionally, corrosion tests based on Tafel extrapolation method validate the favorable performance of the corrosion resistance and low coating porosity of the silver deposits. It was observed that, in the absence of Cu+, copper alone cannot reduce the Ag+ in MPS solutions, indicating that Cu+ is the critical component in the reactions involving MPS-assisted replacement. Combined with the experimental output, quantum chemical calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) were employed to explain the mechanism of this particular chemical reaction.

Abstract:The needs of the ecological transition are based on a larger use of electricity in several processes and access to new resources in large quantities such as hydrogen. The production of the latest by electrolysis as well as the electrification of the means of land transport and the anticipation of the needs of the aeronautics relies on higher capacities in current transmission. The specifications of the connectors and power transmission devices are increasingly stringent, requiring high-quality coatings when intended for contact current transmission. Silver and silver alloys appears to be an excellent choice for such application [1]. The standard electrochemical potential of silver being among the highest, the stability range of its oxides, in aqueous solution, is all the more reduced. In order to maintain these oxidized forms in solution and thus be able to reduce them to the cathode, formulations mixing complex, pH buffer system and other additives have been developed. The electroplating of hard silver in cyanide environments remains the most widely used industrial process, but the specifications can only be obtained by the use of chemical species whose mechanism of action is often poorly known. Moreover, nature and concentrations of additives used in the bath have a direct impact on the coatings properties. An alternative exists in the complexation of other metals with silver, to form an alloy with properties which depends strongly on the electrolysis parameters. To work properly, the working potential must be shifted from the thermodynamic equilibrium [2]. The present study is part of the SILAHPERF project, led by IRT-M2P and UTINAM Institute, which try to investigate the codeposition mechanism of various silver-based alloys of interest with a particular focus on silver-tungsten while seeking for environmental-friendly solution, focused on electrolysis parameters. Indeed, an alternative to cyanides as complexing agent is expected, face to the raising number of regulations. Therefore, a large number of complexing agent are evaluated, with their electrochemical behavior in i=f(E) curves, and with the deposition yield as well as the alloying element content as a function of the deposition potential. As an example for silver-tungsten alloys, complexing agents may be a combination of a carboxylic acid and an amino compound. The most popular couple is the citrate-thiourea system, however tartrate, oxalate, ammonia and urea are also good candidates. Abstract:Functional silver coatings have been widely applied in fields of electrochemical energy conversion systems, electronics industry and antibacterial materials, and exploiting new non-cyanide silver electroplating bath system is of great significance for promoting the application. In this work, a new type of cyanide-free electrodeposited silver (Ag) system was developed with Ag2O as the main salt, 5,5-dimethyl hydantoin (DMH) as the silver ion complexing agent and potassium carbonate as the conductive salt. Comprehensive quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that the new silver-based system has the solvation structure of [Ag(C5H7N2O2)2]−(5N(2)-Ag). To further, roles of additives combination (L-cysteine and 2,2-bipyridine) and their fundamental mechanism on the silver electrodeposition process was further investigated by electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations. First-Principles calculation and simulation of molecular dynamics reveal that this additive couple have coordination interactions with Ag+, while strong adsorption on the Ag (111) surface. SEM and XRD analyses showed that the combination of L-cysteine and 2,2-bipyridine achieved an ideal silver coating with good morphology and a low grain size of 22.1 nm, verifying the great potential of the novel system to prepare high-quality silver coatings.

Abstract:A computational study is employed to provide an insight view of the behaviour and function of the complexing agents for environmental friendly silver electroplating. The electronic properties of the complexing agents in the gas and aqueous phase, as well as their silver complexes, interactions of them with the silver surface, and lateral interactions with each other, were explored using density functional theory (DFT). Also, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were carried out to consider the solvent effects and more complexing agent molecules in the cyanide-free silver electroplating process. A complete investigation with details has been performed on 5,5-dimethyl hydantoin (DMH), which was introduced as a proper complexing agent. Then based on the quantum chemical calculations and MD simulation parameters, it was concluded that the proposed 5,5-dimethyl-2,4-dithio-hydantoin (DMDTH) with better performance could be promising as a proper complexing agent for silver electroplating. In this study, different computational methods have been used for a more accurate prediction of efficient complexing agents.

Abstract:The suitability of various nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and phosphorus compounds as complexing agents in a silver electrolyte was examined by using potentiometric titration under practical conditions. The setup consisted of three electrodes to measure the pH and the activity of the silver ions simultaneously. Different ratios of silver to complexing agent from 1:10 to 1:1 at a constant ionic strength of 0.2 mol/L were investigated. The type of the complexes and their corresponding critical stability constants were evaluated by fitting the measured data using a self-developed algorithm. The pH and Nernst potential curve were calculated for the assumed complexes based on the law of mass action to find the best approximation. The correct definition of the occurring species is challenging and can lead to significant changes in the calculation of stability constants. For this reason, the measured silver potential curves were primarily used for the rating of the complexing agents. An evaluation of the measurements shows that the donor atom of the complexing agent and its ligand field strongly affected the stability and type of the complexes. Only a few complexing agents were found to be suitable for use in the cyanide-free silver electrolyte.

Abstract:Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) could affect interactions between nanoparticles and alter their migration behavior. The influence mechanisms of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2S NPs) aggregated by active EPS sludge were studied in monovalent or divalent cation solutions. The aggregation behaviors of the NPs without EPS followed the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The counterions aggravated the aggregation of both NPs, and the divalent cation had a strong neutralizing effect due to the decrease in electrostatic repulsive force. Through extended DLVO (EDLVO) model analysis, in NaNO3 and low-concentration Ca(NO3)2 (< 10 mmol/L) solutions, EPS could alleviate the aggregation behaviors of Cit-Ag NPs and Ag2S NPs due to the enhancement of steric repulsive forces. At high concentrations of Ca(NO3)2 (10–100 mmol/L), exopolysaccharide macromolecules could promote the aggregation of Cit-Ag NPs and Ag2S NPs by interparticle bridging. As the final transformation form of Ag NPs in water environments, Ag2S NPs had better stability, possibly due to their small van der Waals forces and their strong steric repulsive forces. It is essential to elucidate the surface mechanisms between EPS and NPs to understand the different fates of metal-based and metal-sulfide NPs in WWTP systems.

Abstract:Although technological and processing advancements occurred in the past forty years, industrial firms are still struggling to provide solutions to corrosion protection as well as reduction of toxic wastes. Specifically, large-scale industrialization of electroplating techniques will continue to be limited by strict environmental regulations. Moreover, price volatility of the highly demanding electroplated materials like gold, palladium, copper and nickel will heavily impact the market in the next years. In that respect, alloy plating offers better answers in terms of economic growth and environmental sustainability due to fine tuning composition, morphology and crystallinity [1]. The main categories of alloy compounds are presented and the most important properties for the manufacturing process discussed. Particular attention is devoted to advances in industrial quality control and viable solutions for the reduction of precious metal content in electroplated accessories as well as replacement of cyanide and nickel baths with non-toxic compounds, also considering the commercial needs of wear resistance and aesthetic characteristics of gloss. The electrodeposition of Cu-Sn alloys (bronze) has earned considerable interest thanks to the chemical-physical properties of this alloy, which make it a valid substitute for nickel in fashion industry. Generally, most of the bronze coatings are electroplated starting from baths containing cyanides, and the metal precursors are selected as cyanide compounds. Free cyanide is a well-known problem in the galvanic production cycle both in terms of toxicity for the workers as well as for the environment, and in terms of costs associated with its disposal. The aim of this study is to develop an electroplating bath totally cyanide-free, therefore formulated in an innovative way and which, in addition to being free from this dangerous species, has an eco-friendly support electrolyte. To achieve this goal, methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was chosen as electrolyte, which is biodegradable as part of the natural sulfur cycle. We've studied different formulations in terms of metal precursors, organic additives and their concentrations [2-3]. The same cyanide issue is present also in for the electrodeposition of silver, for this reason the influence of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as additive for cyanide-free silver bath, in combination with 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) as complexing agent, was studied [4]. Chronoamperometry was used to investigate the electrodeposition mechanism, which is found to be a three-dimensional diffusion-controlled nucleation and growth mechanism, according to the Scharifker–Mostany's model. Smoother, brighter and blue colored silver deposits are obtained in the presence of PEI in a Hull's cell test, at low density current. Eventually, the influence of nitrate anion is also investigated. The presence of nitrate increases the range of current density allowing for an effective Ag deposition. We also investigated the use of modulated currents to increase the throwing power of electroplating, obtaining a more uniform deposition and reducing the amount of metals but maintaining the required characteristics. Pulsed current justifies its practical application mainly through its ability to influence the mechanisms of electrocrystallisation, which in turn control the mechanical and physical properties of the deposited metal. By simply adjusting the amplitude and length of the pulses, it is possible to control not only the composition and thickness, in atomic order, of the deposits, but to improve their characteristics such as grain size, porosity and homogeneity [5]. Abstract:In this work, a combined approach using density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamic simulations, and electrochemical experiments was developed to study organic additives used for a cyanide-free gold electrodeposition process. When 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) is used as the complexing agent, organic additives with either imino groups or nitrogenous heterocyclic rings including polyethyleneimine (PEI), 2,2′-bipyridine, and nicotinic acid (NA) were systematically investigated. Electronic properties and orbital information of these studied additives were determined by quantum chemical calculations based on DFT. Compared to the other additives, PEI was predicted as the most promising one for the introduced DMH based gold electrodeposition. The theoretical prediction was further verified by using experimental results. In particular, the cathodic polarization of the gold electrodeposition was significantly improved in the presence of PEI. Also, the resulting gold electrodeposit shows obviously finer crystalline particles largely. In addition, molecular dynamic simulations determined that PEI molecules possess optimized adsorption behavior on the gold surface, suggesting its effectiveness to be additive in the studied cyanide-free Au-electrodeposition electrolytes.

Abstract:Nanosized silver particle (< 10 nm) was highly dispersed on the surface of silicon particle by electroless deposition on the basis of a stirred silver mirror reaction. Ex situ X-ray diffraction and discharge/charge cycling measurements indicated that silver, as well as silicon, participated in the insertion/extraction process of Li+ and played a positive role in the complete extraction of Li+ from silicon host. Furthermore, ordered structure of silicon can be obtained after the extraction of Li+ with the help of silver additives, which indicates the effect of silver additives in promoting the recrystallization of amorphous Li+-extracted silicon. Abstract:La_2O_3/Ag complex silver catalyst was prepared by ultrasonic electrolytic method.The catalysts with different loading weight of La_2O_3 were investigated by SEM,XRD and ICP.The crystal structure of silver was not destroyed after mixing with small amount of La_2O_3/Ag in electrolytic process,but thermo-stability was improved obviously.The activity and stability of complex silver catalysts were compared in selective oxidation of ethylene glycol reaction system between 1%La_2O_3/Ag and pure electrolytic silver catalyst,the results revealed that activity of complex silver catalyst was inhibited slightly,however the stability and selectivity was enhanced obviously at high reaction temperature zone.
An environmentally friendly system for high efficient silver recovery from anode slime

Abstract:Anode slime is an extremely valuable secondary resource for the recovery of silver and has attracted wide attentions. Effective metal recovery is usually constrained by either environmental hazards or high consumption of lixiviant for cyanide and non-cyanide leaching reagents. To tackle these issues in the process of silver recovery from anode slime, this research demonstrated a new leaching system with using an efficient oxidant which encapsulates cyanide into ferric complexes to ensure it not releasing into the environment while effective silver recovery was achieved. Comparing with the traditional tetra-amine copper oxidant, it was found that the dissolution rate of silver was significantly improved and leachate consumption was largely decreased. The effects of stirring speed, sodium thiosulfate concentration, oxidant concentration, solution pH and time on silver dissolution were investigated. When the novel system of iron-encapsulated cyanide was applied to extract silver from anode slime, the final conversion rates of silver was 97% after 60 minutes. This system has great potential in silver recovery from anode slime.

Abstract:To evaluate the application of mirror-bright silver deposit from 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) and nicotinic acid (NA)–based cyanide-free silver electroplating bath, the performance comparison of cyanide-free silver deposit obtained from the introduced bath with conventional cyanide-based one was carried out. The macroscopic appearance, surface morphology, adhesive strength, and welding property of the introduced mirror-bright silver deposit were determined. Equal to the cyanide-based silver electroplating bath, mirror-bright silver deposits with excellent leveling capability, and smooth and compact morphology, as well as excellent welding property could be obtained from the studied DMH and NA–based silver electroplating bath. Thus, the investigated DMH and NA–based silver electroplating bath could be a promising alternative to the conventional cyanide ones for the applications of silver electroplating in decorative purposes and microelectronics.

Abstract:By using ethylenediamine (En) as a complexing agent, the impact of various Zn2+ coordinated configurations on Zn anode reversibility was systematically studied. With the predominant configurations of [Zn(En)](2+) and [Zn(En)(2)](2+) in the electrolyte, both symmetric Zn/Zn cells and Zn/NiHCF full cells exhibit significantly improved cycling stability compared to the counterparts with pure ZnSO4 electrolyte.

Abstract:Herein, for the first time the electrodeposition of carboxylated chitosan is studied and utilized for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and generation of AgNPs/carboxylated chitosan nanocomposite films. Particularly, AgNPs are in situ synthesized on electrodes or substrates during the electrodeposition. Carboxylated chitosan not only acts as the green reducing agent and stabilizing agent for preparing AgNPs, but also serves as the main component in the electrodeposited nanocomposite film. The experimental results indicate that a smooth and homogeneous film is formed on the silver plate after electrodeposition, and the electrodeposited film can be detached from the silver plate as an independent film. The TEM observation and spectroscopic analysis results confirm the existence of AgNPs (the average size of 10 nm) in the nanocomposite film. The nanocomposite films with various shapes can be fabricated by the spatial selectivity of electrodeposition. In addition, the nanocomposite film containing AgNPs shows favorable antibacterial properties.

Electrochemical Removal of Metal-Organic Complexes in Metal Plating Wastewater: A Comparative Study of Cu-EDTA and Ni-EDTA Removal Mechanisms.

Abstract:Cu and Ni complexes with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu/Ni-EDTA), which are commonly present in metal plating industry wastewaters, pose a serious threat to both the environment and human health due to their high toxicity and low biodegradability. In this study, the treatment of solutions containing either or both Cu-EDTA and Ni-EDTA using an electrochemical process is investigated under both oxidizing and reducing electrolysis conditions. Our results indicate that Cu-EDTA is decomplexed as a result of the cathodic reduction of Cu(II) with subsequent electrodeposition of Cu(0) at the cathode when the cathode potential is more negative than the reduction potential of Cu-EDTA to Cu(0). In contrast, the very negative reduction potential of Ni-EDTA to Ni(0) renders the direct reduction of EDTA-complexed Ni(II) at the cathode unimportant. The removal of Ni during the electrolysis process mainly occurs via anodic oxidation of EDTA in Ni-EDTA, with the resulting formation of low-molecular-weight organic acids and the release of Ni2+, which is subsequently deposited as Ni0 on the cathode. A kinetic model incorporating the key reactions occurring in the electrolysis process has been developed, which satisfactorily describes EDTA, Cu, Ni, and TOC removal. Overall, this study improves our understanding of the mechanism of removal of heavy metals from solution during the electrochemical advanced oxidation of metal plating wastewaters.
