Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a high-valuebiomass-derived platform chemical derived from renewablebiomass, which is a great alternative to petroleum-based chemicals;however, it cannot be produced on a large scale at present becauseof the limitation of a low HMF yield and costly production. In thiswork, an experimental study of one-pot production of HMF fromglucose in an acetone-water solvent was conducted. The effects ofinorganic salts (in specific, NaCl) on miscible solvents were studiedbecause inorganic salts could affect the phase structure of solvents.We also study the influence of the ratio between Lewis acid andBronsted acid (L/B) on the dehydration reaction. After parameteroptimization experiments, up to 64.5% HMF yield was obtained at the condition ofC0= 1.25 w/v %,CAlCl3= 1.25 w/v %,CHCl=10mmolmiddotL-1,T= 160 degrees C, ando/a= 80/20, and the optimized L/B was 1.25 kgmiddotmol-1. Finally, an economic and efficient HMFproduction process including HMF purification and catalyst recycling was proposed; the HMF product could be produced andseparated with high recovery (similar to 88%) and purity (similar to 85%) in the process. Ourfindings and analysis would provide support for thechoice of the reaction system and bifunctional catalyst synthesis in the subsequent industrial demonstration development

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a crucial biobased compound for synthesizing chemicals and biofuels, but the direct conversion of glucose to HMF suffers low yield and purification problems. In this paper, a cheap and efficient deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride-chromium chloride (ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O) was developed to convert glucose and other carbohydrates to HMF. High HMF yields of 70.2, 78.6, 72.6, and 71.7% were achieved from glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, and sucrose, respectively. The DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O could be reused nine times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. In addition, a method was developed to regenerate humins-polluted DES. Combined with ultraviolet and visible spectrum data and density functional theory calculation, [Cr(H2O)(2)Cl(3)Ch](+) was identified as the active species in DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O. This paper proposed a new effective system to convert carbohydrates to HMF. The discovery of active species provides a base for future studies on dehydration mechanisms.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from fructose is a typical liquid-phase biomass conver-sion reaction, strongly affected by solvent media and acid catalysts, including fructose reactivity and HMF selectivity. Most works on solvent selection were conducted experimentally, however, lack of the-oretical guidance. Herein, we applied experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate solvent effects of acetone-water solvent on HMF production. Factors including product distribution, key interme-diate and byproduct identification, reaction pathways, and solvation simulation of solutes were system-atically evaluated. The results indicate that water ensures high substrate concentration and assists intermolecular hydrogen transfer to accelerate reaction rate. Various HMF degradation reactions are introduced in the presence of water, however, are significantly inhibited by acetone. Moreover, acetone increases the population of high-reactive fructofuranose isomers, thus improving HMF yield. Therefore, water and acetone play a synergistic role in HMF preparation. Also, our findings provide theoretical insights for solvent selection and methodology for studying solvent effects. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Converting carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important goal for biorefinery. Although various deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been reported for HMF production, the field lacks systematic research on the effect of cations and anions and an effective catalytic system for converting concentrated carbohydrates. Here, 12 kinds of DESs containing four cations and six anions were systematically evaluated and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) was confirmed as the most effective DES, which provided HMF yields of 90 and 76% from fructose and glucose, respectively. The stable bromide-substituted intermediate may explain the positive effect of bromide based on the results of density functional theory calculation. A high concentration substrate has an adverse impact on the selectivity of HMF due to the HMF concentration caused by glucose, CrCl3.6H(2)O, and concentrated HMF. To inhibit the condensation, a biphasic system of TEAB/THF is developed to convert a highly concentrated glucose of 62.5 wt % (83.3 wt % with respect to TEAB), providing an excellent HMF yield of 72%. This study has revealed the impact of cations and anions of DESs on HMF production, which will serve as a base for designing taskspecific DESs. Moreover, an efficient catalytic system to produce HMF from concentrated glucose was also provided.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) primary can be synthesized from monosaccharides including glucose and fructose, cost is one of barriers to realize HMF large-scale production. In this study, a high HMF yield of 69.6 mol% was obtained at 180. for 5 min using biomass derived cellulose formate as reactant, which was prepared by formylation of cellulose using recyclable formic acid, and sequentially catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and H2O system. To investigate the effect of cosolvents and formyl groups on the cellulose formate conversion, kinetics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted. Reaction kinetics study shows that the rate constant of hydrolysis of cellulose formate to glucose increased by almost three times in DMSO-H2O and the reaction rates' constants of glucose, fructose and HMF to humins decreased with the presence of DMSO. Molecular dynamics simulations show that formyl group and DMSO increased its hydrophilicity around the reactive hydroxyl group on the carbon ring and steric hindrance of formyl group affect the distribution of water molecular and DMSO molecular around formylated glucose, resulting in facilitating the formation of a precursor to fructose and inhibiting the formation of humins during formylated glucose conversion. Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:The development of sustainable, efficient routes for conversion of glucose in biomass to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important green intermediate in the production of value-added chemicals and fuels, has emerged due to the need to replace depletion of non-renewable fossil sources and climate change caused by their use. In this study, we describe a highly efficient reaction system for the production of HMF with a combination of homogeneous catalyst and heterogeneous catalyst in a polar cosolvent. The catalyst system consists of activated carbon (AC) supported aluminum (AC-Al) and maleic acid (MA) dissolved in a mixture of water, acetonitrile (ACN) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Kinetic analysis of HMF production from glucose shows that carbon supported aluminum catalyst in combination with homogeneous maleic acid favored fructose dehydration to HMF instead of the formation of insoluble humins when compared to dissolved aluminum chloride and maleic acid in the same solvent. In addition, the rate constant of HMF hydrolysis to levulinic and formic acid was lower for AC-Al compared to dissolved Al. Response surface methodology (RSM), with central composite rotatable design (CCRD), identified the optimum conditions for glucose conversion to HMF as 168 °C for 11 min with a predicted molar yield of 50.3 mol%, which compared well to the experimentally verified yield of 45.8 mol% for these reaction conditions. To test the influence of glucose concentration on HMF yield, a range of initial glucose concentrations were examined. Results showed that the HMF yield increased with the decrease of weight percentage of glucose, suggesting that second order reactions result in humins formation.

Abstract:As a crucial bio-based platform chemical, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the abundant substrate cellulose has garnered significant attention. However, tedious reaction steps are inevitable because of the complex tandem conversions of dissolution, hydrolysis, and dehydration. Furthermore, due to the ultralow solubility of cellulose, harsh reaction conditions are inevitable, which can exacerbate HMF degradation. To this end, we investigated the structural changes in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) after its dissolution and regeneration in various dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to clarify the mechanisms underlying its dissolution. The results revealed that the highly crystalline cellulose I in MCC was converted into amorphous cellulose II after treatment with DMSO/tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC), which led to the complete dissolution of MCC. Accordingly, a dissolution-catalysis coupling reaction strategy was proposed for converting MCC to HMF via a one-pot method in DMSO/TEAC, simultaneously reducing the number of steps necessary for the reaction and achieving mild reaction conditions. In addition, the pathway for the one-pot reaction was clarified by analyzing the intermediate yields. The combination of AlCl3 as a catalyst and DMSO/ TEAC resulted in a notable MCC conversion of 93.3 wt% and a high HMF yield of 53.1%. Remarkably, the reaction conditions employed in this study (130 degrees C, 1 h) were milder in terms of shorter reaction times and lower temperatures than those reported in most current literature. This was attributed to the complete dissolution of MCC resulting from decrystallization. Therefore, the proposed reaction strategy enabled the efficient production of HMF from cellulose.

Abstract:In this work, a green reaction system of CO2-water-isopropanol was developed for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production. The conversion of fructose in a CO2-water system was first investigated, and the results showed this system could promote the formation of HMF compared to a pure water system. Then, isopropanol was introduced into the CO2-water system and the HMF formation became better because the solvent effect of isopropanol increased the tautomeric composition of fructofuranose, which was easy to form HMF. The existence of isopropanol was found to greatly suppress secondary reactions where HMF was converted to levulinic acid and insoluble humin. Meanwhile, the effects of reaction parameters on the conversion of fructose to HMF in the CO2-water-isopropanol system were analyzed, and a high HMF yield of 67.14% was obtained. Finally, to further illustrate the merits of CO2-water-isopropanol system, productions of HMF from other carbohydrates were tested and satisfactory yields were achieved. Abstract:Conversion of carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) will provide a new step toward achieving renewable biomass-based chemicals and fuels platform. Recently, the excellent yield of HMF (91.0%) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) catalyzed by sulfonated carbon was demonstrated, but the separation of HMF from the reaction mixture remains challenging because of the high boiling point of DMSO. As a solution, herein, low boiling point solvent tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixed with DMSO was used for the fructose dehydration and high yield of HMF (98.0%) was still obtained. Besides, the stability of the sulfonated carbonaceous catalyst was also confirmed. More importantly, HMF from the reaction solution was successfully separated by using simple extraction method, and high purity of HMF (ca. 96.4%) was obtained. Compared with pure DMSO solvent, the combination of low boiling point THF with DMSO not only gives higher yield of HMF, but also improves the separation efficiency and reduces environmental risk. Abstract:5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is an important platform chemical, but the large scale production is limited by its instability. In this research, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), derived from HMF, was produced directly from cellulose in formic acid reaction system with a yield of 33.4mol% at 150°C for 2h. Among numerous metal salt catalysts screened in this study, alkali metal bromides were found to be effective in catalyzing cellulose conversion to FMF. Bromide anions facilitation of the esterification of HMF to form FMF was confirmed. In addition, the effects of water, acid and other reaction parameters also were investigated when NaBr was used as the catalyst. Up to 2% of water or acid in this reaction system did not impact on the FMF yield. Increasing the temperature for every 20°C from 130°C to 170°C halved the reaction time but did not change the maximum yield. FMF was more hydrophobic and thermostable than HMF, which made it easier to be recovered. In a two-step process, FMF with a recovery of 29.4mol% and purity of 97mol% was obtained.

Abstract:Among many biomass-derived intermediate compounds, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been regarded as a platform chemical because it can be used to produce numerous valuable products. However, the difficulty of HMF isolation from reaction media coupled with its poor stability have significantly inhibited its large-scale production and application. In this work, we report a single-step process for the direct production of HMF from glucose using green chemical methods. Optimized glucose isomerization and dehydration under microwave irradiation achieved a respectable HMF yield (70 %) using a biphasic solvent mixture (water/THF), high glucose concentration (30 % w/v), catalytic amounts of AlCl3 (5 mol%) and HCl (15 mol%). The reaction can be completed within minutes at 165 degrees C. Overall, our microwave-assisted strategy enables the direct conversion of commercially available glucose to the highly valuable platform chemical HMF without the use of expensive solvents or catalysts, suggesting an economically attractive approach for upgrading carbohydrates.

Abstract:Water-compatible lanthanide-based Lewis acids for the efficient conversion of glucose and other carbohydrates to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) were demonstrated in a biphasic reactor using sec-butyl phenol as the extracting solvent. The reaction of glucose dehydration to HMF was found to proceed under near-neutral conditions (pH = 5.5) and a moderately high yield of 42 mol % could be obtained. The combined catalytic system also showed effectiveness to convert other polysaccharides to HMF. Furthermore, the aqueous phase was recycled and used for multiple times without significant loss of catalytic performance.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a valuable platform chemical derived from biomass and lots of research focuses on the synthesis of HMF from fructose and glucose. Herein, conversion of bio-carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was studied in the three-component deep eutectic solvent (DES) system, which was composed of choline chloride (ChCl), boric acid and substrates such as fructose, glucose and sucrose. Bio-carbohydrates handled under typical reaction conditions gave satisfactory conversion (44% for fructose and 31% for glucose) and yield of HMF (35% for fructose and 21% for glucose) in 1 h. Moreover, owing to the benefits of DES, the initial substrate content could be higher and the reaction temperature could be reduced, thus side reactions were effectively avoided and the selectivity of HMF was better (ranging from 79% to 100% for fructose and from 65% to 100% for glucose). We believe this method could provide a promising alternative for conversion of bio-carbohydrates to HMF and a better utilization of biomass.

Abstract:We report the catalytic conversion of glucose in high yields (62%) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a versatile platform chemical. The conversion of glucose in the presence of Lewis and Bronsted acidity proceeds through a tandem pathway involving isomerization of glucose to fructose, followed by dehydration of fructose to HMF. The organic phase extracts 97% of the HMF produced, while both acid catalysts remain in the aqueous phase.

Abstract:Development of an eco-friendly and effective reaction system for production of platform chemicals like 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has always been a hot topic in biorefineries. In this study, the acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) coupled with chromium chloride (CrCl3) have been developed for effective conversion of fructose to HMF under a microwave-assisted manner. The acidic DES was composed of an organic acid and choline chloride (ChCl). Among the organic acids screened, the ChCl-HCOOH system was found to be the most effective medium for the HMF production, which was attributed to the smaller molecular structure and stronger acidity. Such an observation was also consistent with the larger interaction potential energy between fructose and ChCl-HCOOH obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, a synergistic effect achieved from the ChCl-HCOOH/CrCl3 mixture played a vital role on the formation of HMF. The ChCl-HCOOH/CrCl3 system could be reutilized without remarkable change in HMF yield, indicating the advantages of ease of recovery and high catalytic stability.
