Abstract:The enantiomeric atropoisomers of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (BINOL) have become one of the most widely used chiral ligands and auxiliaries for asymmetric synthesis. Abstract:A new method for optical resolution of racemic 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been developed through molecular complexation with a cheap and readily accessible (S)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxanilide, affording the enantioenriched BINOL in up to 70.4% ee and 73.6% yield. X-Ray structural analysis of a molecular crystal formed between (R)-BINOL and (S)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxanilide indicates that the hydrogen bonding interactions between the carbonyl groups of amides and the hydroxyl groups of (R)-BINOL predominate in the molecular complex formation. The chiral features of the amide and the complementary molecular packing in the crystal lattice control the stereochemistry of the guest in the molecular crystal.

Abstract:Novel chiral triethoxysilane derivatives of(S)-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol(BINOL) substituted at 3 and 3,3′ positions of binaphthyl backbone were synthesized conveniently from 2,2′-bis(methoxymethy)-1,1′-binaphthol through three steps,i.e.,carbonylation,reduction and Williamson reaction with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane using sodium hydride as a deprotonation reagent.Other chiral triethoxysilane derivatives of(S)-BINOL substituted at 6 and 6,6′ positions of binaphthyl backbone were prepared through four steps,including bromization at 6 and 6,6′ positions of binaphthyl backbone in addition to the three steps mentioned above.The yields of the four compounds are 84%,62%,82% and 67% respectively.The obtained compounds are stable at room temperature and can be purified by column chromatography.The structures of the final products were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,29Si NMR,IR,ESI-MS and elemental analysis.The silicon atom was confirmed to exist as triethoxysilane in the derivatives by 29Si NMR.

Abstract:Chirality, a fundamental principle in chemistry, biology, and medicine, is prevalent in nature and in organisms. Chiral molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, are crucial in biomolecular synthesis, as well as in the development of functional materials. Among these, 1,1´‐binaphthyl‐2,2´‐diol (BINOL) stands out for its stable chiral configuration, versatile functionality, and commercial availability. BINOL is widely employed in asymmetric catalysis and chiral materials. This review mainly focuses on recent research over the past five years concerning the use of BINOL derivatives for constructing chiral macrocycles and cages. Their contributions to chiral luminescence, enantiomeric separation, transmembrane transport, and asymmetric catalysis were examined.

Abstract:A dynamic thermodynamic resolution method for converting (R/S)-BINOL (1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol) into (R)-BINOL in 100% theoretical yield is reported. Abstract:A highly efficient and practical resolution of racemic 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been achieved through molecular complexation with N-benzylcinchoninium chloride, which can be readily prepared in 85% yield using an improved procedure through the reaction of cinchonine with benzyl chloride in dimethylformamide (DMF). It is found that the absolute configuration of BINOL included in the molecular crystals is R, which is the same as in the case of using N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride. This result is discussed in terms of molecular recognition in the solid state. X-Ray structural analysis of molecular crystal formed between (R)-BINOL and N-benzylcinchoninium chloride indicates that the additive effect of the chiral features of the host, the interaction pattern between the functional groups of the host and guest, and the complementary molecular packing in the crystal lattice dominates the stereochemistry of the guest in the molecular crystal. Abstract:An economic and practical method for preparing enantiomerically pure [1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-diols is reported. Thus, a condensate of threo-(IS,2S)-2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)propane-1,3-diol and cyclohexanone (CHANP) was used as a resolving agent. A 2: 1:1 mixture of racemic [1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-diol, boric acid, and CHANP was refluxed for several hours in THF or MeCN to give a white precipitate of bis((R)-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-diol)boric acid CHANP derivative, from the precipitate, and a filtrate separated from the precipitate, (R)- and (S)-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-diol of 100% ee were obtained in ca. 65% yield, respectively.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of the enantiomerically pure 3,3'-bis-arylated BINOLs is accomplished through decarboxylative iodination of the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid followed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a one-pot protocol. The decarboxylative iodination is effected with the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid using iodine as a terminal oxidant and the cheaply available K3PO4 as a base under neat conditions. This protocol facilitated the introduction of the aryl group at the 3,3'-position on the binaphthyl system using aryl boronic acid through a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Abstract:A facile and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 2'-functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-ols has been developed. The C,O-dilithio reagent (2) generated by the reductive ring-opening of binaphthofuran (1) with lithium was treated with the corresponding electrophiles to give 2'-functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-ols including the halides (3), amine (4), acid (5), aldehyde (6), carbonate (7) or phosphonate (8), respectively, in moderate to good yields.
