Abstract:A concise and efficient synthetic approach was developed for the synthesis of functionalized chromeno[4,3-b]pyrrol-4(1H)-ones via a one-pot, three-component reaction of 4-aminocoumarin, arylglyoxal monohydrates, and aromatic amines promoted by KHSO4 in toluene under reflux condition. The attractive features of this protocol are operational simplicity, short reaction time, easy purification of products and good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Various solid-oxidants with different loadings of FeCl3 on Al2O3 were prepared by impregnation. The effects of support and solvent on the oxidative cross-coupling of 2-naphthol with 2-naphthylamine using FeCl3/Al2O3 were studied. Up to 95.01% yield of 2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (NOBIN) was obtained in chlorobenzene using the oxidant with 10% FeCl3 loading on the support containing 5% TiO2 at 60 degrees C. The activity of the used oxidant was improved by treatment with H2O2, which provided an effective method to regenerate the solid-oxidant.

Abstract:A facile and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 2'-functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-ols has been developed. The C,O-dilithio reagent (2) generated by the reductive ring-opening of binaphthofuran (1) with lithium was treated with the corresponding electrophiles to give 2'-functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-ols including the halides (3), amine (4), acid (5), aldehyde (6), carbonate (7) or phosphonate (8), respectively, in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:The highly substituted naphthalenes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7‐heptaphenylnaphthalene (13), 2,3,4,5,6,7,8‐heptaphenyl‐1‐naphthol (12), 1‐bromo‐2,3,4,5,6,7,8‐heptaphenylnaphthalene (4), and 1‐(phenylethynyl)‐2,3,4,5,6,7,8‐heptaphenylnaphthalene (5) were prepared by a variety of methods, and all but 5 were crystallographically characterized. The attempted Ullmann coupling of 4 to give tetradecaphenyl‐1,1'‐binaphthyl (3), at both 270 °C and 350 °C, yielded instead 1,2,3,4,5,6‐hexaphenylfluoranthene (17) via an intramolecular cyclization reaction. When the alkyne 5 was heated with tetracyclone (6) at 350 °C, 1‐(pentaphenylphenyl)‐2,3,4,5,6,7,8‐heptaphenylnaphthalene (7) was formed in 3% yield. However, greater amounts of 5,6,7,8,9,14‐hexaphenyldibenzo[a,e]pyrene (20, 11%) and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7‐heptaphenylfluoranthene (21, 11%) were produced, the former by intramolecular cyclization and dehydrogenation of 5 and the latter by an intramolecular Diels‐Alder reaction of 5 followed by extrusion of acetylene. The X‐ray structure of 7 shows it to be an exceptionally crowded biaryl, and the X‐ray structure of 20 shows it to be a saddle shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.

Abstract:An improved coupling reaction between aromatic ring and acetylene triple bond catalyzed by palladium (0) catalyses for the preparation of pyridylethynyl benzonitrile compounds is described. Efforts were made to improve the reaction by changing different reaction conditions and it was found that the solvent is one important factor in this situation.

Abstract:A family of optically pure 7,7'-disubsituted-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-dinaphthyls have been conveniently prepared from easily accessible 7-alloxyl-2-naphthol by reaction sequences beginning with the asymmetric oxidative coupling and followed by key synthetic steps including deprotection, alkylation, and Suzuki coupling. Application of these binaphthols in catalytic phenylacetylene addition to aldehydes resulted in excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Baes-free Cu(II)-catalyzed coupling reaction of arylboronic acid and thiols was described. After optimization of reaction conditions, such as solvents, reaction temperatures, copper salts and ligands, the results show that some biarylsulfides were synthesized in good yields using 1,10-phenanthroline-Cu(OAc)2 center dot H2O as catalyst, DMSO/H2O (V : V=1 : 1) as solvent, under air atmosphere at 60 degrees C.

Abstract:A series of new octahydro-1, 1'-binaphthyl derivatives, namely (R)-(+)-2-(N, N-dialkylamino)-2'-hydroxy-5 5',6, 6',7, 7',8,8'-octahydro-1, 1'-binaphthyls; (7,9), have been synthesized. Their asymmetric induction for enantioselective addition of Et2Zn to benzaldehyde was examined and it was found that (R)-(+)-2-(N-cyclohexyl-N-methylamino)-2'-hydroxy-5, 5',6,6',7,7',8, 8-octahydro-1, 1'-binaphthyl (9c) exhibited the best asymmetric induction among the ligands prepared, up to 55% ee of 1-phenylpropanol being obtained.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of the enantiomerically pure 3,3'-bis-arylated BINOLs is accomplished through decarboxylative iodination of the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid followed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a one-pot protocol. The decarboxylative iodination is effected with the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid using iodine as a terminal oxidant and the cheaply available K3PO4 as a base under neat conditions. This protocol facilitated the introduction of the aryl group at the 3,3'-position on the binaphthyl system using aryl boronic acid through a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Abstract:A polymer (P-1) was synthesized through the polymerization of (S)-6,6'-dibromo-3,3-dibutyl-1,1'binaphthol with (S)-2,2-dioctoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-6,6-boronic acid in a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reaction, and another polymer (P-2) was synthesized through the polymerization of (S)-6,6'-dibromo-3,3'-dibutyl-1,1'-binaphthol with (S)-6,6'dietliynyl-2,2'-dioctoxy-1,1.'-biiiaphtliyI in a Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira reaction. The two polymers showed good solubility in some common solvents and were characterized with NMR, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The application of the chiral monomers and polymers in the asymmetric addition of diethyl zinc to benzaldehyde was studied. The results indicated that P-1, P-2, and the monomer (S)-3,3'-dibutyl-1,1'-binaphthol were efficient ligands in the asymmetric addition of diethyl zinc to benzaldehyde. The chiral polymer ligands P-1 and P-2 were more efficient than their monomeric version, (S)-3,3'-dibutyl-1,1'-binaphthol, and could be easily recovered and reused without a loss of catalytic activity or enantioselectivity. Abstract:AbstractA challenging direct asymmetric catalytic aerobic oxidative cross‐coupling of 2‐naphthylamine and 2‐naphthol, using a novel CuI/SPDO system, has been successfully developed for the first time. Enantioenriched 3,3′‐disubstituted NOBINs were achieved and could be readily derived to divergent chiral ligands and catalysts. This reaction features high enantioselectivities (up to 96 % ee) and good yields (up to 80 %). The DFT calculations suggest that the F–H interactions between CF3 of L17 and H‐1,8 of 2‐naphthol, and the π–π stacking between the two coupling partners could play vital roles in the enantiocontrol of this cross‐coupling reaction.

Abstract:Chiral conjugated polymers P-1 and P-2 were synthesized by the polymerization of (R)-3,3′-diiodo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthalene ((R)-M-1) and (S)-3,3′-diiodo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthalene ((S)-M-1) with 2,5-bis(4-vinylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (M-2) under Pd-catalyzed Heck coupling reaction, respectively. Both monomers and polymers were analysed by NMR, MS, FT-IR, UV, DSC-TG, fluorescent spectroscopy, GPC and CD spectra. The chiral conjugated polymers exhibit strong Cotton effect in their circular dichroism (CD) spectra indicating a high rigidity of polymer backbone. CD spectra of polymers P-1 and P-2 are almost identical and have opposite signs for their position. These polymers have strong blue fluorescence.

Abstract:Polymers P-1, P-2, P-3, P-4 and P-5 were synthesized by the polymerization of 5,8-bis(ethynyl)isoquinoline (M-1) with (R)-3,3′-diiodo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl ((R)-M-2), (S)-3,3′-diiodo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl ((S)-M-2), (R)-6,6′-dibromo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl ((R)-M-3), (S)-6,6′-dibromo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl ((S)-M-3), and rac-6,6′-dibromo-2,2′-bisbutoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl (M-4) under Sonogashira reaction, respectively. Both monomers and polymers were analyzed by NMR, MS, FT-IR, UV–vis spectroscopy, DSC–TGA, fluorescence spectroscopy, GPC and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. CD spectra of polymers P-1 and P-2, P-3 and P-4 are almost identical except that they gave opposite signals at each wavelength. The long wavelength CD effect of P-1 and P-2 can be regarded as the more extended conjugated structure in the repeating unit and the helical backbone in the polymer chain. All five polymers have strong blue-green fluorescence due to the efficient energy migration from the extended π-electronic structure of the repeating unit of the polymers to the chiral binaphthyl core and are expected to provide understanding of structure–property relationships of the chiral conjugated polymers.
