Abstract:A family of optically pure 7,7'-disubsituted-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-dinaphthyls have been conveniently prepared from easily accessible 7-alloxyl-2-naphthol by reaction sequences beginning with the asymmetric oxidative coupling and followed by key synthetic steps including deprotection, alkylation, and Suzuki coupling. Application of these binaphthols in catalytic phenylacetylene addition to aldehydes resulted in excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Chirality, a fundamental principle in chemistry, biology, and medicine, is prevalent in nature and in organisms. Chiral molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, are crucial in biomolecular synthesis, as well as in the development of functional materials. Among these, 1,1´‐binaphthyl‐2,2´‐diol (BINOL) stands out for its stable chiral configuration, versatile functionality, and commercial availability. BINOL is widely employed in asymmetric catalysis and chiral materials. This review mainly focuses on recent research over the past five years concerning the use of BINOL derivatives for constructing chiral macrocycles and cages. Their contributions to chiral luminescence, enantiomeric separation, transmembrane transport, and asymmetric catalysis were examined.

Abstract:Enantioselective hydroboration of ketones and imines provides a powerful method to access valuable chiral alcohols and amines which are widely used in organic synthesis, materials science, pharmaceutical, agrochemistry and fine chemical industry. After invented in 1991, pinacolborane (HBpin) as a stable, commercially available and measurably simple reductive reagent has been widely applied in hydroboration of carbonyl derivatives, imines and nitriles and relevant mechanistic investigation. In the past 5 years, HBpin has also been employed for asymmetric catalytic hydroboration (CHB) to access chiral alcohols and amines. The enantioselective CHB reactions of ketones and imines using HBpin are outlined according to the classification of different catalysts, such as earth abundant transition metals, main group elements, and rare-earth metals.

Abstract:A highly efficient and practical resolution of racemic 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been achieved through molecular complexation with N-benzylcinchoninium chloride, which can be readily prepared in 85% yield using an improved procedure through the reaction of cinchonine with benzyl chloride in dimethylformamide (DMF). It is found that the absolute configuration of BINOL included in the molecular crystals is R, which is the same as in the case of using N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride. This result is discussed in terms of molecular recognition in the solid state. X-Ray structural analysis of molecular crystal formed between (R)-BINOL and N-benzylcinchoninium chloride indicates that the additive effect of the chiral features of the host, the interaction pattern between the functional groups of the host and guest, and the complementary molecular packing in the crystal lattice dominates the stereochemistry of the guest in the molecular crystal. Abstract:BINOL moieties of different electronic demand are useful blocks for enabling the photo-production and modulation of triplet excited states in readily-accesible BINOL-based O-BODIPY dyes from standard F-BODIPY precursors. Abstract:Two chiral polymers based on binaphthol(BINOL) were synthesized. The polymer can be used as a chiral inducer to coordinate with ZnEt2 to form a recoverable self-supporting catalyst, which could be used in the asymmetric catalytic reaction of alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones. The target products of high yield and good enantioselectivity(e.e. value up to 99%) can be obtained under mild conditions. The catalytic activity was not reduced significantly after 4 or 5 cycles of recovery of the recovered polymers.

Abstract:Novel axially chiral ligands have been designed and synthesized by merging the chelating picolinic acid with substituted BINOLs.
