Abstract:Two asymmetric directional couplers, including the dielectric-hybrid plasmonic coupler and the dielectric-metal insulator-metal plasmonic coupler, are investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency and can be integrated into the silicon based platform. The applications of these hybrid couplers include the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and efficient excitation of plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes. Besides, a symmetric directional coupler based on silver nanowires is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Wideband dispersion-free slow light in chirped-slot photonic-crystal coupled waveguides is proposed and theoretically investigated in detail. By systematically analyzing the dependence of band shape on various structure parameters, unique inflection points in the key photonic band with approximate zero group velocity can be obtained in an optimized slot photonic-crystal coupled waveguide. By simply chirping the widths of the photonic-crystal waveguides in the optimized structure, wideband (up to 20 nm) slow-light with optical confinement in the low dielectric slot is demonstrated numerically with relative temporal pulse-width spreading well below 8% as obtained from two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations. The wideband slow-light operation of the proposed structures would offer significant potential for novel compact high-speed optical-signal-processing devices in silicon-based systems. Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:Slow light waveguides in photonic crystals are engineered using a conventional method or a deep learning (DL) method, which is data-intensive and suffers from data inconsistency, and both methods result in overlong computation time with low efficiency. In this paper, we overcome these problems by inversely optimizing the dispersion band of a photonic moiré lattice waveguide using automatic differentiation (AD). The AD framework allows the creation of a definite target band to which a selected band is optimized, and a mean square error (MSE) as an objective function between the selected and the target bands is used to efficiently compute gradients using the autograd backend of the AD library. Using a limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno minimizer algorithm, the optimization converges to the target band, with the lowest MSE value of 9.844×10-7, and a waveguide that produces the exact target band is obtained. The optimized structure supports a slow light mode with a group index of 35.3, a bandwidth of 110 nm, and a normalized-delay-bandwidth-product of 0.805, which is a 140.9% and 178.9% significant improvement if compared to conventional and DL optimization methods, respectively. The waveguide could be utilized in slow light devices for buffering.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:We design, fabricate and experimentally demonstrate a highly efficient adiabatic mode converter for coupling light into a silicon slot waveguide with a slot width as large as 320nm. This strip-to-slot mode converter is optimized to provide a measured insertion loss as low as 0.08dB. Our mode converter provides 0.1dB lower loss compared to a conventional V-shape mode converter. This mode converter is used to couple light into and out of a 320nm slot photonic crystal waveguide, and it is experimentally shown to improve the coupling efficiency up to 3.5dB compared to the V-shape mode converter, over the slow-light wavelength region.

Abstract:The interlayer coupler is one of the critical building blocks for optical interconnect based on multilayer photonic integration to realize light coupling between stacked optical waveguides. However, commonly used coupling strategies, such as evanescent field coupling, usually require a close distance, which could cause undesired interlayer crosstalk. This work presents a novel interlayer slope waveguide coupler based on a multilayer chalcogenide glass photonic platform, enabling light to be directly guided from one layer to another with a large interlayer gap (1 µm), a small footprint (6 × 1 × 0.8 µm3), low propagation loss (0.2 dB at 1520 nm), low device processing temperature, and a high bandwidth, similar to that in a straight waveguide. The proposed interlayer slope waveguide coupler could further promote the development of advanced multilayer integration in 3D optical communications systems.

Abstract:The properties of truly confined modes of a 2D hex horizontal photonic crystal slot slab waveguide are analyzed. Then the dispersion of liner defect waveguide is calculated. In addition, what influence the slots with different height have over the band structure and the group velocity dispersion of the defect mode waveguide are analyzed. Based on these studies, an ultra-compact silicon-based Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator is proposed. For a design with almost negligible first order chromatic dispersion in an optical bandwidth of 1THz, we predict a modulation bandwidth of 40GHz and a length of about 80 mu m. This is achieved by infiltrating an electro-optic polymer into a slotted photonic crystal waveguide, the strong field confinement in slotted waveguides and the slow light interaction enhancements provided by the photonic crystal waveguide, where group velocity and dispersion may be controlled.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:We report a slot waveguide-enhanced asymmetric photonic crystal optical nanofiber (ONF) cavity to realize cavity quantum electrodynamics. We show that the device can strongly enhance the spontaneous emission of a single quantum emitter leading to a Purcell factor as high as 106 and enables single-photon coupling efficiency as high as 86% into fiber-guided modes. The introduction of the slot enhances the Purcell factor by six times as compared to the ONF cavity structure without slot, and the asymmetric cavity design enables unidirectional coupling of single photons. The cavity is designed to minimize the losses leading to a scattering-limited Q-factor and one-pass loss estimated to be 6388 and 1.2%, respectively. This fiber-coupled single-photon device may open advanced possibilities and applications for quantum information processing.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.
Efficient light couplers to topological slow light waveguides in valley photonic crystals

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrate efficient light couplers between topological slow light waveguides in valley photonic crystals (VPhCs) and wire waveguides. By numerical simulations, we obtained a high coupling efficiency of -0.84 dB/coupler on average in the slow light regime of a group index ng = 10 - 30. Experimentally, we fabricated the couplers in a Si slab and measured the transmitted power of the devices. We realized a high coupling efficiency of approximately -1.2 dB/coupler in the slow light region of ng = 10 - 30, which is close to the result from the numerical simulations. These demonstrations will lay the groundwork for low-loss photonic integrated circuits using topological slow light waveguides.

Abstract:The realization of slow light with ultra-flat dispersion in hybrid photonic crystal (HPhC) waveguide is systematically investigated. Metal strips have been introduced to the photonic crystal (PhC) waveguide. The dispersion of the odd mode is commendably flattened in the leaky region. Ultra-flat-band slow light with nearly constant average group indices of 192 over 2 nm (i.e., 330 GHz) bandwidth is achieved. Flexible tuning for the ultra-high group index can also be achieved while keeping the normalized delay-bandwidth product fairly high. The introduction of the metal strips is further demonstrated to help reduce the azimuthal angle of the far field and provide a high coupling efficiency.

Abstract:We report a novel low-loss splicing approach for hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and conventional single mode fiber (SMF) by inserting an etched SMF tip into the hollow core. If the divergence solid angle (DSA) of the inserted fiber tip is smaller than the guiding solid angle (GSA) of HC-PCF, all the radiated optical power from the tip will be collected by PCF with an extremely high coupling efficiency and guided by the PCF based on photonic bandgap effect. A DSA-GSA matching model is proposed to calculate the efficiency for different splicing situations. In the optimal condition of GSA > DSA, the transmission loss could approach zero, only including the scattering loss of etched fiber. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the splicing between NKT HC19-1550-01 and SMF28 with coupling efficiency of 84.5%, agreeing well with the theoretical result of 85%. In addition, our proposed method is coaxiality error free, angle deviation free, and insertion length insensitive. This new technique is expected to provide new possibilities in some special system designs for HC-PCF-based applications.

Abstract:The light transmission characteristics through the coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) based on the two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal with rectangular microcavities are systematically studied by the finite-difference time-domain method. Owing to the multiple spatial symmetries of the defective modes localized by the rectangular microcavities, the guiding bands can be adjusted by changing the coupling region between the CROW and the traditional W1-typed input and output channels, and their corresponding group velocities can be quite different from each other through the same CROW structure. Through optimizing the coupling regions between the CROW and three output channels, a kind of device with both the abilities of light beam splitting and frequency selection can be obtained, which has potential applications in the future complex all-optical circuits.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new type of slow light photonic crystal waveguide structure to achieve wideband slow light with low dispersion. The waveguide is based on a triangular lattice ellipse-hole photonic crystal imposed simply by a selective altering of the locations of the holes adjacent to the line defect. Under a constant group index criterion of ±10% variation, when group indices are nearly constants of 54, 69, and 80, their corresponding bandwidths of the flat band reach 12.7, 10.0, and 8.6 nm around 1550 nm, respectively. A nearly constant large group index-bandwidth product of 0.44 is achieved for all cases. Low dispersion slow light propagation is confirmed by studying the relative temporal pulse-width spreading with the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:Photonic crystal is a structure with periodic dielectric constant and it has photonic band gap, in which the electromagnetic wave can not propagate in the structure. Two-dimensional slab photonic crystals can be fabricated by etching periodic air holes on a slab substrate, which has been investigated and applied extensively because of their good control of light propagation. Photonic crystal micro-cavities and waveguides can be achieved by introducing defects in the two-dimensional slab photonic crystal. The coupling of micro-cavities and waveguides can be controlled by adjusting geometric parameters, so as to realize the optical devices based on two-dimensional slab photonic crystals such as optical switching, optical storage and single photon source, etc. Prop erties of the micro-cavities and waveguides of two-dimensional slab photonic crystals are introduced, and their coupling control and potential applications in optical quantum information processing are discussed as well.

Abstract:In this paper, two novel types of semi-slow light photonic crystal waveguide with large transmission bandwidth obtained by shifting the boundaries of a W1 waveguide in the direction of light propagation are presented. One includes air rings localized at only one side of the line defect and the other replaces the holes at each side of the waveguide by the uniform air rings which are constructed by the homocentric square dielectric rod inserted into the air holes. The structure produces unusual “n-type” transmission spectrum depending on the different parameters such as inner radius of air ring, dielectric constant of square dielectric rod, etc. It is shown that the transmission spectra of the two structures are completely different from each other. A versatile control of light propagation with large normalized bandwidth and slow light phenomena can be obtained using a unique geometrical parameter. Numerical simulation by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method demonstrates the propagation of the broadband pulse.

Abstract:Employing counterdiabatic shortcut to adiabaticity (STA), we design shorter and robust achromatic two- and three- waveguide couplers. We assume that the phase mismatch between the waveguides has a sign flip at maximum coupling, while the coupling between the waveguides has a smooth spatial shape. We show that the presented coupler operates as a complete achromatic optical switch for two coupled waveguides and as an equal superposition beam splitter for three coupled waveguides. An important feature of our devices is that they do not require larger coupling strength as compared to previous designs, which make them easier to realize in an experimental setting. Additionally, we show that the presented waveguide couplers operate at a shorter device length and are robust against variations in the coupling strength and the phase mismatch.
