Abstract:Two cheliforrn non-fullerene acceptors, DTPC-IC and DTPC-DFIC, based on a highly electron-rich core, dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), are synthesized, showing ultra-narrow bandgaps (as low as 1.21 eV). The two-dimensional nitrogen-containing conjugated DTPC possesses strong electron-donating Capability, which induces intense intramolecular charge transfer and intermolecular pi-pi stacking hi derived acceptors. The solar cell based on DTPC-DFIC and a spectrally complementary polymer donor, PTB7-Th, showed a high power conversion efficiency of 10.21% and an extremely low energy loss of 045 eV, which is the lowest among reported efficient OSCs.
Design and Synthesis of Wide-bandgap Conjugated Polymers Based on 3,4-Dicyanothiophene for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:In this contribution, we report a set of wide bandgap conjugated polymers (PB3TCN-C32, PB3TCN-C36, PB3TCN-C36-R, PB3TCN-C40) based on 3,4-dicyanothiophene (DCT) for use as electron donors in organic solar cells (OSCs). The polymers exhibit wide optical bandgaps (> 1.8 eV) and deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels due to the high electron affinity of DCT unit. The optoelectronic properties, active layer morphology, and device performance of the polymers can be tuned by side chains. As a result, high-performance solar cells with a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.2% have been achieved by PB3TCN-C40 when using IT-4F as the electron acceptor. Noticeably, the polymers afforded a high open circuit voltage (V-oc) of up to 0.92 V and an energy loss (E-loss) as low as 0.6 eV even though there is not any additional withdrawing groups such as F, Cl, or S atom on the polymers, which is superior to the leading polymer donors in the field of OSCs. These results suggest that the DCT unit hold big room for further increasing V-oc and decreasing E-loss of OSCs via rational polymer design, which is desirable for application in tandem devices and in-door photovoltaics. Overall, this work demonstrated that DCT is a promising building block for constructing wide bandgap conjugated polymer with deep HOMO level for highly efficient OSCs.

Abstract:Three medium‐bandgap polymers based on a 4,5‐ethylene‐2,7‐dithienyl carbazole as the electron‐donating unit and different 5,6‐dialkoxy‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazoles as the electron‐accepting units, are synthesized as polymer donors for photovoltaic applications. The three copolymers possess highest occupied molecular oribital (HOMO) levels around −5.47 eV and medium bandgaps of about 1.94 eV. The solar cells with polymer:[6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) = 1:4 as the active layer, show an especially high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.95 V and attain good power conversion efficiency up to 5.91%. The hole mobilities of the active layer films, measured by space‐charge‐limited current (SCLC), are up to 3.5 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. Given the favorable medium bandgaps, low‐lying HOMO levels, and good hole mobilities, these copolymers are promising candidates for the construction of a highly efficient front cell to harvest the shorter wavelength band of the solar radiation in a tandem solar cell with high Voc. image

Abstract:Two new donoracceptor alternating wide band gap copolymers, PTTDBC-PhQC8 and PTTDBC-BTC12, based on an electron-rich tetrathienodibenzocarbazole (TTDBC) donor have been designed and synthesized, wherein two additional thienyl rings are fused into a 2,7-dithienylcarbazole skeleton to reinforce the structural coplanarity and rigidity of polymers. The quinoid thiophene in TTDBC can endow not only a wide optical band gap (similar to 1.9 eV) but also a deep HOMO (similar to 5.3 eV) for the resulting polymers. The conventional configuration solar cells based on PTTDBC-BTC12 exhibit a large V-oc of 0.91 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.30% (with a Jsc of 9.27 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.51), while a slightly higher PCE of 4.50% can be achieved for the inverted structure devices. We believe that these wide band gap polymers have potential to be used for tandem cell applications.

Abstract:A ladder-type diindenopyrazine (IPY) was synthesized and used as a building block for constructing conjugated copolymers. Three copolymers based on the IPY moiety were obtained via the Suzuki coupling reaction with different monomers, including 4,7-dithien-2-yl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DBT), 5,8-dithien-2-yl-2,3-diphenylquinoxaline (DTQ), and 5,8-dithien-2-yl-2,3-di(4-fluorophenyl)quinoxaline (DFTQ). The obtained polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Owing to the four solubilizing alkyl chains on the IPY unit, all the three copolymers have good solubility in common solvents. These polymers have deep-lying HOMO energy levels in the range of −5.55–−5.60 eV, and exhibit ?eld-effect mobilities as high as 0.006 cm2·V−1·s−1. Photovoltaic applications of these polymers as light-harvesting and hole-conducting materials were investigated in conjunction with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). Both conventional and inverted devices were fabricated based on these three polymers. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.53% and a high open-circuit voltage of 1.00 V were obtained under simulated solar light AM 1.5 G (100 mW/cm2) from an inverted solar cell with an active layer containing 25 wt% ladder-type IPY containing copolymer (PIPYDTQ) and 75 wt% PC61BM. Moreover, a high open-circuit voltage of 1.02 V and a PCE of 2.40% were achieved from a conventional solar cell based on PIPYDTQ.

Abstract:Two novel copolymers incorporating N-alkyl-4,7-di(thien-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-5,6-dicarboxylic imide (DI) and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) units have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. By the incorporation of the DI unit, both polymers show a bathochromically shifted absorption with a deep lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level. The polymer based on thienyl group substituted BDT exhibits an intense absorption in the longer-wavelength region, a deeper lying HOMO energy level, and a higher carrier mobility, all of which contribute to the resulting polymer solar cells with a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.19% and an increased Voc of 0.91 V.

Abstract:Two wide bandgap copolymers based on bulky indacenodithiophene (IDT) and alkoxylated benzothiadiazole units (PIDTBTO-T and PIDTBTO-TT) with the thiophene or thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) π-bridge are designed and synthesized. The effect of π-bridge on the π-π packing, optical, carrier transport, nano-sized phase separation and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers are investigated in depth. In comparison with the PIDTBTO-T-based counterpart, the best performance solar cell based on PIDTBTO-TT exhibits a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.15% which is mainly attributed to the formation of a fibrous network for the active layer based on PIDTBTO-TT. Furthermore, when a novel hybrid electron transport layer (PDIN:PFN) is introduced into a tandem solar cell using the PIDTBTO-TT-based device and a PTB7-Th-based device as the bottom and top cell components, respectively, the resulting solar cell exhibits an outstanding PCE of 11.15% with a large open circuit voltage of 1.70V. To the best of our knowledge, the PCEs of 8.15% and 11.15% are the highest values reported to date for the single-junction and tandem solar cells using IDT-based copolymers, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the π-bridge modulation is effective in adjusting the charge carrier mobility and photovoltaic performance of IDT-based wide bandgap copolymers for single-junction and tandem devices.

Abstract:Three novel pyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine derivatives of 4,9-dialkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine-5,10-dione, 10-alkoxy-4-alkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridin-5-one, and 5,10-dialkoxypyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine were synthesized as building blocks of copolymers Pa, Pb and Pc, giving relatively large band gaps of 2.13, 2.19 and 2.21 eV, respectively. Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were fabricated in a typical device configuration by utilizing the resulting polymers as the donor of the active layer. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.47% was achieved from the Pa-based device without any additives or thermal annealing. A further improved PCE of 4.54% was achieved in inverted device architecture, and it is hitherto the highest efficiency of BHJ polymer solar cells using a donor polymer with a band gap above 2.1 eV.

Abstract:A new high-mobility low-bandgap polymer, PBDT-DODTBT, based on benzodithiophene and 5,6-bis(octyloxy)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole has been synthesized through a standard Stille coupling reaction. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and chlorobenzene and has excellent film forming properties. Preliminary studies of the copolymer showed the charge mobility as high as 7.15 x 10(-3) cm(2).V-1. s(-1) from SCLC measurement. Initial photovoltaic cells based on the composite structure of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDT-DODTBT: (PC71BM)-P-alpha (1:2)/Ca/Al showed an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V, a power conversion efficiency of 4.02%, and a short-circuit current of 8.96mA.cm(-2).

Abstract:Two large band-gap polymers (PTPACF and PTPA2CF) based on polytriphenylamine derivatives with the introduction of electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl groups were designed and prepared by Suzuki polycondensation reaction. The chemical structures, thermal, optical and electrochemical properties were characterized in detail. From the UV-visible absorption spectra, the PTPACF and PTPA2CF showed the optical band gaps of 2.01 and 2.07 eV, respectively. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement displayed the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of −5.33 and −5.38 eV for PTPACF and PTPA2CF, respectively. The hole mobilities, determined by field-effect transistor characterization, were 2.5 × 10−3 and 1.1 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 S−1 for PTPACF and PTPA2CF, respectively. The polymer solar cells (PSCs) were tested under the conventional device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC71BM/PFN/Al. All of the PSCs showed the high open circuit voltages (Vocs) with the values approaching 1 V. The PTPACF and PTPA2CF based PSCs gave the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3.24% and 2.40%, respectively. Hence, it is a reliable methodology to develop high-performance large band-gap polymer donors with high Vocs through the feasible side-chain modification.
Quinoxaline-Based Wide Band Gap Polymers for Efficient Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells with Large Open-Circuit Voltages.

Abstract:We present here a series of wide-band-gap ( Eg: >1.8 eV) polymer donors by incorporating thiophene-flanked phenylene as an electron-donating unit and quinoxaline as an electron-accepting co-unit to attain large open-circuit voltages ( Vocs) and short-circuit currents ( Jscs) in nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs). Fluorination was utilized to fine-tailor the energetics of polymer frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) by replacing a variable number of H atoms on the phenylene moiety with F. It was found that fluorination can effectively modulate the polymer backbone planarity through intramolecular noncovalent S···F and/or H···F interactions. Polymers (P2-P4) show an improved molecular packing with a favorable face-on orientation compared to their nonfluorinated analogue (P1), which is critical to charge carrier transport and collection. When mixed with IDIC, a nonfullerene acceptor, P3 with two F atoms, achieves a remarkable Voc of 1.00 V and a large Jsc of 15.99 mA/cm2, simultaneously, yielding a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7%. Notably, the 1.00 V Voc is among the largest values in the IDIC-based OSCs, leading to a small energy loss ( Eloss: 0.62 eV) while maintaining a large PCE. The P3:IDIC blend shows an efficient exciton dissociation through hole transfer even under a small energy offset of 0.16 eV. Further fluorination leads to the polymer P4 with increased chain-twisting and mismatched FMO levels with IDIC, showing the lowest PCE of 2.93%. The results demonstrate that quinoxaline-based copolymers are promising donors for efficient OSCs and the fluorination needs to be fine-adjusted to optimize the interchain packing and physicochemical properties of polymers. Additionally, the structure-property correlations from this work provide useful insights for developing wide-band-gap polymers with low-lying highest occupied molecular orbitals to minimize Eloss and maximize Voc in nonfullerene OSCs for efficient power conversion.
Diketo-Pyrrolo-Pyrrole-Based Medium Band Gap Copolymers for Efficient Plastic Solar Cells: Morphology, Transport, and Composition-Dependent Photovoltaic Behavior

Abstract:Two diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole-based donor-acceptor copolymers, PCPDT-PDPP and PDTP-PDPP, were synthesized and applied as p-type component for bulk heterojunction solar cells. Using a facile molecular engineering of the main chain linking bridge, we have successfully tuned the band gap of the materials from low to medium level, which results in an improved balance between the device open circuit voltage and short circuit current. The power conversion efficiencies of the polymer/PC70BM combinations achieve 2.03% (PCPDT-PDPP) and 1.32% (PDTP-PDPP) without any interface engineering or post-treatment. A totally different composition-dependent photovoltaic behavior was also discovered for each of the two materials, although they share similar donor acceptor (D-A) structure. Morphological and photophysical studies reveal a phase structure dominated, light harvesting subordinated mechanism, in Which some nonkernel molecular level factors, such as the branch chain density and the molecular weight, are found to play important roles.

Abstract:Despite the frequently renewed record high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in recent years, achieving single‐junction polymer solar cells (PSCs) with both high PCE and large open circuit voltage (V OC) remains a challenge because there is a trade‐off between high short circuit current density (J SC) and large V OC values. Here, the design and synthesis of a novel donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymer (PIT2FBT) based on an asymmetric‐indenothiophene donor and a difluorinated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole acceptor is demonstrated. PIT2FBT exhibits a wide optical bandgap of 1.82 eV with a large ionization potential of 5.54 eV. Through systematic morphology control and device engineering, the best performance solar cell based on PIT2FBT shows a high PCE of 9.01% in combination with a large V OC of 1.0 V. To the best of our knowledge, the PCE is the highest for single‐junction polymer fullerene solar cells with V OCs up to 1.0 V. At the same time, the influences of solvent additive on the active layer morphology together with the resulting device performance are investigated in‐depth. These findings and detailed studies provide an important guidance to tune and optimize the morphology and photovoltaic properties of indenothiophene‐based copolymers, which are promising candidates for short‐wavelength absorbing materials in tandem PSCs.

Abstract:A novel D-A1-D-A2-type polymer that exhibits a small bandgap of 1.43 eV yet still yields polymer solar cells with a high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.81 V and power conversion efficiencies of up to 8.63% is reported.
