Abstract:This paper reports repetitive pulsed power sources for generation of pulsed streamer corona and electrohydraulic spark discharge plasmas, respectively. Single- and multiple-switch circuit topologies are used for scaling the average power up. For positive streamer corona plasma, ultra-short (similar to 50 ns) hybrid pulsed-power technologies have been under investigations with an industrial pilot system. For electrohydraulic spark discharge plasma, an all solid-switch pulsed power technology has been developed and introduced into the market since 2002. This paper also discusses critical circuit elements, such as heavy-duty thyristor, transmission line transformer, and triggered spark-gap switch, and their industrial applications.
Novel Multiple-switch Pulsed Power Technologies

Abstract:This article reviews our recent work on a TLT (Transmission-Line-Transformer) based multiple-switch pulsed power technology. By interconnecting multiple switches in serial via a TLT, multiple switches can be synchronized automatically, like in a Marx generator. In contrast to Marx, pulsed power can be generated either at a high voltage or at a large current. Its fundamental principle was studied theoretically and experimentally on a two-switch concept. Through use of this technology, an efficient heavy-duty pulsed power system with ten spark-gap switches and a 10-stage TLT has been realized for corona plasma application. Pulses with a rise-time of about 10 ns, a pulse width of about 55 ns, a peak output power of 300～810 MW, a peak output voltage of 40～77 kV, and a peak output current of 6～11 kA have been achieved with an energy conversion efficiency of 93%～98%. Proper operation of the μs large current pulse generation by using multiple thyristors has been verified, which can be used for powerful electrohydraulic discharge. In addition, application of the interconnection topology into other circuit configurations, e. g. Blumlein and inductive adder are explored as well.

Abstract:This paper discusses a novel multiple-switch pulsed power technology. By using transmission lines, multiple switches can be synchronized like in a MARX generator. To gain insight into this technology, an equivalent circuit model was developed, a two-switch experimental setup and a prototype pulsed power source with four gas spark- gap switches have been constructed. The four-switch setup includes 16 coaxial cables, four in parallel in each stage. This setup has been operated at a repetition rate of 50 pps with over 1.4 kA switching current. The principle, experimental setup and experiment results will be given in this paper.

Abstract:Cold plasma jets at atmospheric pressure have become the standard reactors used for treatment of various biosamples and other application. The object of this experimental study is one such reactor powered by a short-pulse voltage with a rise time ≈400 ns, operating with helium gas. The main aim of the investigation was to obtain the data on the jet streamer space–time development and plasma parameters near the target. Axial and radial structure was examined along with gas temperature and electric field above the target. Results show a comparably fast streamer progression (10 5 m/s) with strong electric field in the period of maximum current (33 kV/cm). These characteristic features can be attributed to the fast rise of the voltage pulse. Graphical abstract

Abstract:This paper discusses a high-voltage pulse generator for producing corona plasma. The generator consists of three resonant charging circuits, a transmission line transformer, and a triggered spark-gap switch. Voltage pulses in the order of 30-100 kV with a rise time of 10-20 ns, a pulse duration of 100-200 ns, a pulse repetition rate of 1-900 pps, an energy per pulse of 0.5-12 J, and the average power of up to 10 kW have been achieved with total energy conversion efficiency of 80%-90%. Moreover, the system has been used in four industrial demonstrations on volatile organic compounds removal, odor emission control, and biogas conditioning.

Abstract:In this article we discuss a 10 kW high-voltage pulse generator for producing corona-induced plasma. The generator mainly consists of a three-step resonant charging circuit switched by thyristors, a transmission line transformer, and a triggered spark-gap switch. Voltage pulses of 30–100 kV with a rise time of about 20 ns, a pulse duration of 50–250 ns, pulse repetition rate of 1–900 pulses per second, energy of up to 12 J/pulse, and an average power of up to 10 kW have been achieved with a total energy transfer efficiency of about 80%–90%. At each frequency, the deviation of the energy per pulse is around 1.0%. Moreover, the generator has been tested for more than 100 h for both industrial demonstrations and laboratory investigations at an average output power of 1–10 kW.

Abstract:The Blumlein generator has been one of the most popular pulsed-power circuits. The pulse forming lines are charged simultaneously, and then discharged via a single switch, such as a spark gap. The generator can be used for single pulse or at a high repletion rate. However, for large pulsed power generation, one critical issue for such a single-switch based circuit topology is related to large switching currents. In this article, we propose a novel Blumlein circuit topology based on multiple switches. The pulsed forming lines are charged in parallel and then are synchronously commutated via multiple switches. No special synchronization trigger circuit is needed for the proposed circuit topology; this robust circuit topology is simple and very reliable. A prototype multiple-switch Blumlein generator with two spark-gap switches has been experimentally evaluated with both resistive and corona plasma loads. In terms of the switching currents, it is observed that the two switches can be synchronized within 2–3 ns. The energy conversion efficiencies are 82% and 76.8% for a matched resistive load and a plasma reactor, respectively.

Abstract:With regard to pollution emission control, there are two critical issues that are blocking corona plasma industrial applications. The first one is the capacity of repetitive pulse power techniques, and the second is the total energy consumption. Worldwide research and development on industrial corona plasma systems were very much dependant on individual empirical experience. Systems were not designed at an optimized operation. To the authors' knowledge, no group has tried to bridge the gap between the fundamental characteristics of corona plasma, chemical reactions, pulsed power generators and the corona plasma reactor. This paper discusses their recent work in developing industrial corona plasma systems for industrial applications. (4 pages)

Abstract:This paper discusses novel pulsed circuit topologies for pulsed corona plasma generation. As a general principle, decrease of output impedance of pulsed power source leads to scale up of corona plasma power. DC superimposed pulse energization provides advantages of decrease of switching duty, increase of average power, and improvement of matching. Critical circuit elements include pulse forming networks (PFNs), triggered spark-gap switches and transmission line transformers (TLTs). Two main circuit topologies are based on single and multiple switches. The TLTs are used for both impedance matching and synchronization of the multiple switches.

Abstract:Large-volume uniform plasma generated under low pressure has promising application prospects in areas like material processing, activation, and regeneration of catalysts, and so on. In this paper, uniform plasma of a maximum volume of about 21 L was generated by using a bipolar pulsed power source(50~104 Hz, peak voltage less than 3 kV, pulse width less than 50 μs) and parallel plate electrodes, under pressure of 10~100 Pa, in a homemade vacuum reactor. Measuring the time-varied voltage and current of the reactor during discharge, we obtained the inception voltage of a uniform discharge,and found the relationship between power and parameters, such as pressure, electrode distance, electrode area, pulse frequency, etc., under several kinds of medium like air, oxygen, and argon. The results reveal that large-volume uniform plasma with a maximum volume of 21 L has been generated under all 3 kinds of media, uniformity and stability of the discharge are better when pressure is below 50 Pa. Inception voltage increases while pressure and electrode spacing increase, respectively. Power density stays the same when the area of the electrode changes, and increases as the pressure, pulse frequency, and applied voltage increase, and as the electrode spacing decreases.

Abstract:Pulsed plasma techniques serve a wide range of unconventional processes, such as gas and water processing, hydrogen production, and nanotechnology. Extending research on promising applications, such as pulsed corona processing, depends to a great extent on the availability of reliable, efficient and repetitive high-voltage pulsed power technology. Heavy-duty opening switches are the most critical components in high-voltage pulsed power systems with inductive energy storage. At the Ioffe Institute, an unconventional switching mechanism has been found, based on the fast recovery process in a diode. This article discusses the application of such a "drift-step-recovery-diode" for pulsed corona plasma generation. The principle of the diode-based nanosecond high-voltage generator will be discussed. The generator will be coupled to a corona reactor via a transmission-line transformer. The advantages of this concept, such as easy voltage transformation, load matching, switch protection and easy coupling with a dc bias voltage, will be discussed. The developed circuit is tested at both a resistive load and various corona reactors. Methods to optimize the energy transfer to a corona reactor have been evaluated. The impedance matching between the pulse generator and corona reactor can be significantly improved by using a dc bias voltage. At good matching, the corona energy increases and less energy reflects back to the generator. Matching can also be slightly improved by increasing the temperature in the corona reactor. More effective is to reduce the reactor pressure.
Optimizing Energy Efficiency for Industrial Application of Pulsed Corona Gas Cleaning Techniques

Abstract:An important topic regarding industrial application of non-thermal plasma technique: increasing the overall energy efficiency is discussed in this paper. The total energy efficiency can be subdivided into 4 steps. A new system has been developed to look at several of these steps. Measurements were performed regarding the "second step" in the energy efficiency optimization: matching between pulse source and reactor. It was shown that by increasing the voltage, higher energy efficiencies could be obtained. Also matching the reactor capacitance to the output impedance of the source and the rise-time of the generated pulses was shown to be beneficial to energy efficiency. At this moment the best efficiency (from energy storage to reactor) was about 60%. Implementation of a new pulse transformer and a DC bias voltage will result in higher efficiencies (similar to 95%, as was already observed in the past)

Abstract:Gas cleaning techniques using non-thermal plasma are slowly introduced into industry nowadays. Here we present a novel power modulator for the efficient generation of large volume corona plasma. No expensive high-voltage components are required. Switching is done at an intermediate voltage level of 1 kV with standard thyristors. Detailed investigations on the modulator and a wire-plate corona reactor will be presented. In a systematic way, modulator parameters have been varied. Also reactor parameters, as the number of electrodes and the electrode-plate distance have been varied systematically. The yield of O-radicals was determined from the measured ozone concentrations at the exhaust of the reactor.

Abstract:The tremendous applications of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging require THz sources in different parameters. We propose a novel scheme to generate single-cycle powerful THz pulses by ultrashort intense laser pulses incident obliquely on a tenuous plasma slab of few THz wavelengths in thickness. This is made possible by driving a large amplitude electron plasma wave in the plasma slab, thus producing a net transient current at the plasma surfaces. Theory and simulations show that such a THz source is capable of providing megawatt power and field strength of MV/cm, which may open up new horizons for nonlinear THz science and applications.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma discharge requires a pulsed power generator with a high repetition rate, short pulse width, fast rise voltage and a long lifetime. This requirement will give a challenge to pulsed power generator, especially to the switch devices. Normal switch devices tend to have limited lifetime and average power level, which hinder their practical aplications. In our work, an all-solid-state pulsed power generator is presented. It consists of a resonant charging circuit, a fast charger with high frequency controlled by a high speed semiconductor switch, a step-up transformer, a magnetic compression switch and the load. In this circuit three stages of pulse compress from millisecond to nanosecond is achieved. The resonant charging circuit provides primary power supply in tens of milliseconds scale. The fast charger charges the capacitor in the last stage in several microseconds. At the last stage, the magnetic compression switch transfers low inductance from high inductance and compresses the current pulse into short one. A semiconductor switch controls the frequency of the load discharge. The whole pulse power generator operates with high frequency and efficiency. It has high reliability and long lifetime, which is very useful in applications of non-thermal plasma discharge. This paper discusses the basic principle of pulsed power generator and put the focus on the system analysis and design.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate single-cycle powerful terahertz (THz) pulses by ultrashort intense laser pulses obliquely incident on an underdense plasma slab of a few THz wavelengths in thickness. THz waves are radiated from a transient net current driven by the laser ponderomotive force in the plasma slab. Analysis and particle-in-cell simulations show that such a THz source is capable of providing power of megawatts to gigawatts, field strength of MV/cm-GV/cm, and broad tunability range, which is potentially useful for nonlinear and high-field THz science and applications.
