Abstract:Let H be a Hopf algebra over a base field. If H has an ℕ-filtration such that the associated graded ring is connected graded noetherian and has enough normal elements, then H is Gorenstein. This gives a partial solution to a question of Brown and Brown-Goodearl. As a consequence, every quotient Hopf algebra of a generic quantized coordinate ring of a connected semisimple Lie group is Auslander-Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay. The last statement answers a question of Goodearl-Zhang.

Abstract:We prove an existence theorem for dualizing complexes over noncommutative noetherian complete semilocal algebras, which generalizes Van den Bergh's existence theorem in the graded case. Using the dualizing complex, noncommutative versions of Bass theorem and the no-holes theorem are proved. We also prove that noetherian complete semilocal algebras satisfying polynomial identities are catenary.

Abstract:We study pre-balanced dualizing complexes over noncommutative complete semilocal algebras and prove an analogue of Van den Bergh’s theorem [VdB, 6.3]. The relationship between pre-balanced dualizing complexes and Morita dualities is studied. Some immediate applications to classical ring theory are also given.

Abstract:In this paper we treat Grothendieck Duality for noetherian rings via rigid dualizing complexes. In particular, we prove that every ring, essentially finite type over a regular base ring, has a unique rigid dualizing complex. The rigid dualizing complexes have strong functorial properties, allowing us to construct the twisted induction pseudofunctor, which is our ring-theoretic version of the twisted inverse pseudofunctor $f^{!}$. This is the first article of a bigger project, whose final goal is establishing Grothendieck Duality, including global duality for proper maps, for Deligne-Mumford stacks.

Abstract:Let A be a noetherian local commutative ring and let M be a suitable complex of A-modules. This paper proves that M is a dualizing complex for A if and only if the trivial extension A \ltimes M is a Gorenstein Differential Graded Algebra. As a corollary follows that A has a dualizing complex if and only if it is a quotient of a Gorenstein local Differential Graded Algebra.

Dualizing complexes on the moduli of parabolic bundles

Abstract:For a non-archimedean local field $F$ and a connected reductive group $G$ over $F$ equipped with a parabolic subgroup $P$, we show that the dualizing complex on $\mathrm{Bun}_P$, the moduli stack of $P$-bundles on the Fargues--Fontaine curve, can be described explicitly in terms of the modulus character of $P$. As applications, we identify various characters appearing in the theory of local and global Shimura varieties, show the Harris--Viehmann conjecture in the Hodge--Newton reducible case, and carry out some computations of the geometric Eisenstein functors for general parabolics.

Local duality theorems for commutative algebraic groups

Abstract:If k is an arbitrary field, we construct a category of k-1-motives in which every commutative algebraic k-group G has a dual object $G^{\vee}$. When k is a local field of arbitrary characteristic, we establish Pontryagin duality theorems that relate the fppf cohomology groups of G to the hypercohomology groups of the k-1-motive $G^{\vee}$. We also obtain a duality theorem for the second cohomology group of an arbitrary k-1-motive. These results have applications (to be discussed elsewhere) to certain extensions of Lichtenbaum-van Hamel duality to a class of non-smooth proper k-varieties.

Duals of Higher Vector Spaces

Abstract:We introduce a notion of dual $n$-groupoid to a simplicial vector space for any $n\ge 0$. This has a canonical duality pairing which we show to be non-degenerate up to homotopy for homotopy $n$-types. As a result this notion of duality is reflexive up to homotopy for $n$-types. In particular the same properties hold for $n$-groupoid objects, whose $n$-duals are again $n$-groupoids. We study this construction in the context of the Dold-Kan correspondence and we reformulate the Eilenberg-Zilber theorem, which classically controls monoidality of the Dold-Kan functors, in terms of mapping complexes. We compute explicitly the 1-dual of a groupoid object and the 2-dual of a 2-groupoid object in the category of vector spaces. As the 1-dual of a groupoid object we recover its dual as a $\mathsf{VB}$ groupoid over the point.

Abstract:We prove a duality theorem for Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complexes. This is a generalisation of Poincaré Duality, framed in the language of combinatorial sheaves. Our treatment is self-contained and accessible for readers with a working knowledge of simplicial complexes and (co)homology. The main motivation is a link with Bieri-Eckmann duality for discrete groups, which is explored in a companion paper.

Abstract:For a group $G$ (of type $F$) acting properly on a coarse Poincaré duality space $X$, Kapovich-Kleiner introduced a coarse version of Alexander duality between $G$ and its complement in $X$. More precisely, the cohomology of $G$ with group ring coefficients is dual to a certain Čech homology group of the family of increasing neighborhoods of a $G$-orbit in $X$. This duality applies more generally to coarse embeddings of certain contractible simplicial complexes into coarse $PD(n)$ spaces. In this paper we introduce a relative version of this Čech homology that satisfies the Eilenberg-Steenrod Exactness Axiom, and we prove a relative version of coarse Alexander duality. As an application we provide a detailed proof of the following result, first stated by Kapovich-Kleiner. Given a $2$-complex formed by gluing $k$ halfplanes along their boundary lines and a coarse embedding into a contractible $3$-manifold, the complement consists of $k$ deep components that are arranged cyclically in a pattern called a Jordan cycle. We use the Jordan cycle as an invariant in proving the existence of a $3$-manifold group that is virtually Kleinian but not itself Kleinian.

Abstract:We show that the additive category of chain complexes parametrized by a finite simplicial complex $K$ forms a category with chain duality. This fact, never fully proven in the original reference, is fundamental for Ranicki's algebraic formulation of the surgery exact sequence of Sullivan and Wall, and his interpretation of the surgery obstruction map as the passage from local Poincaré duality to global Poincaré duality. Our paper also gives a new, conceptual, and geometric treatment of chain duality on $K$-based chain complexes.

The dual complex of a $G$-variety

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of $G$-varieties, the dual complex, which roughly measures how divisors in the complement of the free locus intersect. We show that the top homology group of this complex is an equivariant birational invariant of $G$-varieties. As an application, we demonstrate the non-linearizability of certain large abelian group actions on smooth hypersurfaces in projective space of any dimension and degree at least $3$.

Abstract:We are concerned with relating derived categories of all modules of two dual Koszul algebras defined by a locally bounded quiver. We first generalize the well known Acyclic Assembly Lemma and formalize an old method of extending a functor from an additive category into a complex category to its complex category. Applying this to the Koszul functor associated with a Koszul algebra defined by a gradable quiver, we obtain a Koszul complex functor, that descends to an equivalence of a continuous family of pairs of triangulated subcategories of doubly unbounded complexes of the respective derived categories of all modules of the Koszul algebra and its Koszul dual. Under this special setting, this extends Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soegel's Koszul duality. In case the Koszul algebra is right or left locally bounded and its Koszul dual is left or right locally bounded respectively (for instance, the quiver has no right infinite path or no left infinite path), our Koszul duality restricts to an equivalence of the bounded derived categories of finitely supported modules, and an equivalence of the bounded derived categories of finite dimensional modules.

Abstract:We explain how Cohen--Macaulay classifying spaces are ubiquitous among discrete groups that satisfy Bieri--Eckmann duality, and compare Bieri--Eckmann duality to duality results for Cohen--Macaulay complexes. We use this comparison to give a description of the dualizing module of ${\rm{Out}}(F_N)$ in terms of the local cohomology cosheaf of the spine of Outer space.

Abstract:We introduce a cup-cap duality in the Koszul calculus of N-homogeneous algebras. As an application, we prove that the graded symmetry of the Koszul cap product is a consequence of the graded commutativity of the Koszul cup product. We propose a conceptual approach that may lead to a proof of the graded commutativity, based on derived categories in the framework of DG algebras and DG bimodules. Various enriched structures are developed in a weaker situation corresponding to N>2.

Abstract:We generalize Yekutieli-Zhang's noncommutative Serre Duality Theorem to the setting of noncommutative spaces associated to dg-algebras. As an application, we establish some finiteness properties of derived global sections over such noncommutative spaces. Along the way, we generalize Yekutieli's notion of a balanced dualizing complex to the setting of dg-algebras and establish some cases in which they exist.

Abstract:A quantum homogeneous space of a Hopf algebra is a right coideal subalgebra over which the Hopf algebra is faithfully flat. It is shown that the Auslander–Gorenstein property of a Hopf algebra is inherited by its quantum homogeneous spaces. If the quantum homogeneous space B of a pointed Hopf algebra H is AS-Gorenstein of dimension d, then B has a rigid dualizing complex Bν[d]. The Nakayama automorphism ν is given by ν=ad(g)∘S2∘Ξ[τ], where ad(g) is the inner automorphism associated to some group-like element g∈H and Ξ[τ] is the algebra map determined by the left integral of B. The quantum homogeneous spaces of Uq(sl2) are classified and all of them are proved to be Auslander-regular, AS-regular and Cohen–Macaulay.
