Abstract:We show that the additive category of chain complexes parametrized by a finite simplicial complex $K$ forms a category with chain duality. This fact, never fully proven in the original reference, is fundamental for Ranicki's algebraic formulation of the surgery exact sequence of Sullivan and Wall, and his interpretation of the surgery obstruction map as the passage from local Poincaré duality to global Poincaré duality. Our paper also gives a new, conceptual, and geometric treatment of chain duality on $K$-based chain complexes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that for a finite simplicial complex \( K \), the categories of chain complexes of \( (Z, K) \)-modules \( \text{Ch}(Z(K)-\text{mod}) \) and \( \text{Ch}(Z(K^\text{op})-\text{mod}) \) possess chain duality. This result has never been fully proven in the original reference (Ranicki, 1992), but it forms the basis of Ranicki's algebraic formulation of Sullivan and Wall's surgery exact sequence and the explanation of the surgery obstruction map from local Poincaré duality to global Poincaré duality. Specifically, the author provides a new, conceptual, geometric method of proving chain duality to supplement the parts left incomplete in Ranicki's original work. Additionally, the paper discusses several key concepts related to this chain duality: 1. **Chain Duality**: The paper defines chain duality and demonstrates how to construct this duality on \( \text{Ch}(Z(K)-\text{mod}) \) and \( \text{Ch}(Z(K^\text{op})-\text{mod}) \). 2. **Algebraic Structures**: The paper introduces some important algebraic structures, such as chain complexes and homology groups, and shows how these structures are applied in the proof of chain duality. 3. **Geometric Background**: The paper illustrates the geometric significance of chain duality through specific examples, such as the dual cell decomposition of a simplicial complex. In summary, this paper aims to fill the gap in Ranicki's original work regarding the proof of chain duality and provides a clearer and more geometrically intuitive method of proof.
