Abstract:We compare closed and rigid monoidal categories. Closedness is defined by the tensor product having a right adjoint: the internal-hom functor. Rigidity, on the other hand, generalises the duality of finite-dimensional vector spaces. In the latter, the internal-hom functor is implemented by tensoring with the respective duals. This raises the question: can one decide whether a closed monoidal category is rigid, simply by verifying that the internal-hom is tensor-representable? We provide a counterexample in terms of finitely-generated projective objects in an abelian k-linear category. A byproduct of our work is that we obtain characterisations of the Grothendieck--Verdier duality, also called *-autonomy, and rigidity of functor categories endowed with Day convolution as their tensor product. Applied to Mackey functors, this yields a proof of a sketched argument by Bouc linking rigidity of an object to it being finitely-generated projective.

Monoidal Structures on Generalized Polynomial Categories

Abstract:Recently, there has been renewed interest in the theory and applications of de Paiva's dialectica categories and their relationship to the category of polynomial functors. Both fall under the theory of generalized polynomial categories, which are free coproduct completions of free product completions of (monoidal) categories. Here we extend known monoidal structures on polynomial functors and dialectica categories to generalized polynomial categories. We highlight one such monoidal structure, an asymmetric operation generalizing composition of polynomial functors, and show that comonoids with respect to this structure correspond to categories enriched over a related free coproduct completion. Applications include modeling compositional bounds on dynamical systems.

Grothendieck-Verdier duality in categories of bimodules and weak module functors

Abstract:Various monoidal categories, including suitable representation categories of vertex operator algebras, admit natural Grothendieck-Verdier duality structures. We recall that such a Grothendieck-Verdier category comes with two tensor products which should be related by distributors obeying pentagon identities. We discuss in which circumstances these distributors are isomorphisms. This is achieved by taking the perspective of module categories over monoidal categories, using in particular the natural weak module functor structure of internal Homs and internal coHoms. As an illustration, we exhibit these concepts concretely in the case of categories of bimodules over associative algebras.

Abstract:In the context of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, researcher T. Srinivasan demonstrated that when the space under consideration is an absolute neighborhood retract, its category can be realized through arbitrary subsets, not necessarily open ones. The primary aim of this survey is to illustrate how this result has been extended to the case of topological complexity and its monoidal version, along with some of its most significant implications.

Abstract:We develop further the theory of monoidal bicategories by introducing and studying bicategorical counterparts of the notions of a linear explonential comonad, as considered in the study of linear logic, and of a codereliction transformation, introduced to study differential linear logic via differential categories. As an application, we extend the differential calculus of Joyal's analytic functors to analytic functors between presheaf categories, just as ordinary calculus extends from a single variable to many variables.

Abstract:There are many examples of dualities between topological spaces and algebras in the literature. Particularly, many of those examples come from the algebraic counterpart of a logical system, e.g, boolean and heyting algebras, MV-algebras, monoidal categories and linear logic etc. This process can be generalized to a representation of an algebraic structure by a sheaf in a suitable topological space. Recently, Awodey and his contributors constructed a duality between first order logic and topological grupoids from which they have proven some results of completeness. Furthermore, they built a notion of scheme of a first order theory. The attempt of this project is to use the construction of abstract schemes invented by Toen to give an unified approach from which we can generalize the aforementioned results.

Abstract:We continue our study of the monoidal category $D(G)$. At the level of cohomology we transfer the duality functor to the derived category of Hecke dg-modules. In the process we develop a more general and streamlined approach to the anti-involution first defined by Ollivier and Schneider. We also verify that the tensor product on $D(G)$ corresponds to an operadic tensor product on the dg-side. This uses a result of Schnürer on dg-categories with a model structure.

Abstract:Extensions of Stone-type dualities have a long history in algebraic logic and have also been instrumental for proving results in algebraic language theory. We show how to extend abstract categorical dualities via monoidal adjunctions, subsuming various incarnations of classical extended Stone and Priestley duality as special cases. Guided by these categorical foundations, we investigate residuation algebras, which are algebraic models of language derivatives, and show the subcategory of derivation algebras to be dually equivalent to the category of profinite ordered monoids, restricting to a duality between boolean residuation algebras and profinite monoids. We further refine this duality to capture relational morphisms of profinite ordered monoids, which dualize to natural morphisms of residuation algebras. As a special case of the discrete version of the duality between monoids and complete residuation algebras, we obtain a novel concrete description for the dual of the category of all small categories and functors.

Abstract:Category theory is a branch of mathematics that provides a formal framework for understanding the relationship between mathematical structures. To this end, a category not only incorporates the data of the desired objects, but also "morphisms", which capture how different objects interact with each other. Category theory has found many applications in mathematics and in computer science, for example in functional programming. Double categories are a natural generalization of categories which incorporate the data of two separate classes of morphisms, allowing a more nuanced representation of relationships and interactions between objects. Similar to category theory, double categories have been successfully applied to various situations in mathematics and computer science, in which objects naturally exhibit two types of morphisms. Examples include categories themselves, but also lenses, petri nets, and spans. While categories have already been formalized in a variety of proof assistants, double categories have received far less attention. In this paper we remedy this situation by presenting a formalization of double categories via the proof assistant Coq, relying on the Coq UniMath library. As part of this work we present two equivalent formalizations of the definition of a double category, an unfolded explicit definition and a second definition which exhibits excellent formal properties via 2-sided displayed categories. As an application of the formal approach we establish a notion of univalent double category along with a univalence principle: equivalences of univalent double categories coincide with their identities

Abstract:In the literature, one finds several competing notions for the super (i.e., Z/2-graded) analog of a monoidal category. The goal of this paper is to clarify these definitions and the connections between them. We also discuss in detail the example of the odd Temperley-Lieb supercategory. In a forthcoming article, we will exploit the formalism developed here in order to define super analogs of the Kac-Moody 2-categories of Khovanov-Lauda and Rouquier.

Abstract:We develop a general theory of (extended) inner autoequivalences of objects of any 2-category, generalizing the theory of isotropy groups to the 2-categorical setting. We show how dense subcategories let one compute isotropy in the presence of binary coproducts, unifying various known one-dimensional results and providing tractable computational tools in the two-dimensional setting. In particular, we show that the isotropy 2-group of a monoidal category coincides with its Picard 2-group, i.e., the 2-group on its weakly invertible objects.

Abstract:The term Stone-type duality often refers to a dual equivalence between a category of lattices or other partially ordered structures on one side and a category of topological structures on the other. This paper is part of a larger endeavour that aims to extend a web of Stone-type dualities from ordered to metric structures and, more generally, to quantale-enriched categories. In particular, we improve our previous work and show how certain duality results for categories of [0,1]-enriched Priestley spaces and [0,1]-enriched relations can be restricted to functions. In a broader context, we investigate the category of quantale-enriched Priestley spaces and continuous functors, with emphasis on those properties which identify the algebraic nature of the dual of this category.

Abstract:We define duality triples and duality pairs in compactly generated triangulated categories and investigate their properties. This enables us to give an elementary way to determine whether a class is closed under pure subobjects, pure quotients and pure extensions, as well as providing a way to show the existence of approximations. One key ingredient is a new characterisation of phantom maps. We then introduce an axiomatic form of Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality, from which we define dual definable categories, and show that these coincide with symmetric coproduct closed duality pairs. This framework is ubiquitous, encompassing both algebraic triangulated categories and stable homotopy theories. Accordingly, we provide many applications in both settings, with a particular emphasis on silting theory and stratified tensor-triangulated categories.

Abstract:This is a report on aspects of the theory and use of monoidal categories. The first section introduces the main concepts through the example of the category of vector spaces. String notation is explained and shown to lead naturally to a link between knot theory and monoidal categories. The second section reviews the light thrown on aspects of representation theory by the machinery of monoidal category theory, such as braidings and convolution. The category theory of Mackey functors is reviewed in the third section. Some recent material and a conjecture concerning monoidal centres is included. The fourth and final section looks at ways in which monoidal categories are, and might, be used for new invariants of low-dimensional manifolds and for the field theory of theoretical physics.

Abstract:Suppose that we have a bicomplete closed symmetric monoidal quasi-abelian category $\mathcal{E}$ with enough flat projectives, such as the category of complete bornological spaces $\textbf{CBorn}_k$ or the category of inductive limits of Banach spaces $\textbf{IndBan}_k$. Working with monoids in $\mathcal{E}$, we can generalise and extend the Koszul duality theory of Beilinson, Ginzburg, Soergel. We use an element-free approach to define the notions of Koszul monoids, and quadratic monoids and their duals. Schneiders' embedding of a quasi-abelian category into an abelian category, its left heart, allows us to prove an equivalence of certain subcategories of the derived categories of graded modules over Koszul monoids and their duals.
