Abstract:We compare closed and rigid monoidal categories. Closedness is defined by the tensor product having a right adjoint: the internal-hom functor. Rigidity, on the other hand, generalises the duality of finite-dimensional vector spaces. In the latter, the internal-hom functor is implemented by tensoring with the respective duals. This raises the question: can one decide whether a closed monoidal category is rigid, simply by verifying that the internal-hom is tensor-representable? We provide a counterexample in terms of finitely-generated projective objects in an abelian k-linear category. A byproduct of our work is that we obtain characterisations of the Grothendieck--Verdier duality, also called *-autonomy, and rigidity of functor categories endowed with Day convolution as their tensor product. Applied to Mackey functors, this yields a proof of a sketched argument by Bouc linking rigidity of an object to it being finitely-generated projective.

A Syntax for Strictly Associative and Unital $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:We present the first definition of strictly associative and unital $\infty$-category. Our proposal takes the form of a type theory whose terms describe the operations of such structures, and whose definitional equality relation enforces desired strictness conditions. The key technical device is a new computation rule in the definitional equality of the theory, which we call insertion, defined in terms of a universal property. On terms for which it is defined, this operation "inserts" one of the arguments of a substituted coherence into the coherence itself, appropriately modifying the pasting diagram and result type, and simplifying the syntax in the process. We generate an equational theory from this reduction relation and we study its properties in detail, showing that it yields a decision procedure for equality. Expressed as a type theory, our model is well-adapted for generating and verifying efficient proofs of higher categorical statements. We illustrate this via an OCaml implementation, and give a number of examples, including a short encoding of the syllepsis, a 5-dimensional homotopy that plays an important role in the homotopy groups of spheres.

On functor double $\infty$-categories

Abstract:In this paper, we study double $\infty$-categories of double functors. To this end, we exhibit the cartesian closed structure of the $\infty$-category of double $\infty$-categories and various localizations. We prove a theorem that characterizes the companions and conjoints in functor double $\infty$-categories via the notion of companionable and conjointable 2-cells in double $\infty$-categories. Moreover, we show that under suitable conditions, functor double $\infty$-categories are horizontally closed. Throughout the paper, we highlight a few applications to $(\infty,2)$-category theory and indexed exponentiability.

On duoidal $\infty$-categories

Abstract:A duoidal category is a category equipped with two monoidal structures in which one is (op)lax monoidal with respect to the other. In this paper we introduce duoidal $\infty$-categories which are counterparts of duoidal categories in the setting of $\infty$-categories. There are three kinds of functors between duoidal $\infty$-categories, which are called bilax, double lax, and double oplax monoidal functors. We make three formulations of $\infty$-categories of duoidal $\infty$-categories according to which functors we take. Furthermore, corresponding to the three kinds of functors, we define bimonoids, double monoids, and double comonoids in duoidal $\infty$-categories.

Abstract:We prove, over any base ring, that the infinity-category of strictly unital A-infinity-categories (and strictly unital functors) is equivalent to the infinity-category of unital A-infinity-categories (and unital functors). We also identify various models for internal homs and mapping spaces in the infinity-categories of dg-categories and of A-infinity--categories, generalizing results of Toën and Faonte.

Abstract:We define and study the $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ of $(\infty,1)$-categories internal to a general $(\infty,1)$-category $\mathcal{C}$ via an associated externalization construction. In the first part, we show various formal closure properties of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ regarding limits, tensors, cotensors and internal mapping objects under the assumption of various suitable closure properties of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we show that $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ defines a cartesian closed full sub-$\infty$-cosmos of the $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Fun}(\mathcal{C}^{op},\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty})$ of $\mathcal{C}$-indexed $(\infty,1)$-categories under suitable assumptions on $\mathcal{C}$. We furthermore characterize the objects of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ by means of a Yoneda lemma that expresses indexed diagrams of internal shape over $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of an $(\infty,1)$-categorical totalization. In the second part, we relate the general theory developed to this point to results in the model categorical literature. We show that every model category $\mathbb{M}$ gives rise to a ''hands-on'' $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathbb{M})$ (of not-necessarily cofibrant objects) directly by restriction of the Reedy model structure on $\mathbb{M}^{\Delta^{op}}$. We then define an according right derived model categorical externalization functor, and use it to show that the $(\infty,1)$-categorical and the model categorical constructions correspond to one another whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is presentable and $\mathbb{M}$ is a suitable presentation thereof.

Abstract:We study the framework of $\infty$-equipments which is designed to produce well-behaved theories for different generalizations of $\infty$-categories in a synthetic and uniform fashion. We consider notions of (lax) functors between these equipments, closed monoidal structures on these equipments, and fibrations internal to these equipments. As a main application, we will demonstrate that the foundations of internal $\infty$-category theory can be readily obtained using this formalism.

Abstract:We define strict and weak duality involutions on 2-categories, and prove a coherence theorem that every bicategory with a weak duality involution is biequivalent to a 2-category with a strict duality involution. For this purpose we introduce "2-categories with contravariance", a sort of enhanced 2-category with a basic notion of "contravariant morphism", which can be regarded either as generalized multicategories or as enriched categories. This enables a universal characterization of duality involutions using absolute weighted colimits, leading to a conceptual proof of the coherence theorem.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study certain categorical-algebraic frameworks for basic homological algebra, introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.15896" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.15896">arXiv:2404.15896</a>, with the aim of better understanding the differences between them. We focus on homological self-duality, preservation of normal maps by dinversion and diexactness, finding counterexamples that separate any two of these conditions. On the way, we encounter new examples and new characterizations, such as the Second Isomorphism Property. We also consider homological self-duality in the context of regular categories. Our main technique is to investigate the lattice of normal subobjects of an object in any pointed category with kernels and cokernels. The category of monoidal semilattices is a context where we have easy control of these lattices. We show that properties of the homological frameworks under consideration may be expressed by means of lattice-theoretical properties, such as modularity and distributivity.

Complexes of stable $\infty$-categories

Abstract:We study complexes of stable $\infty$-categories, referred to as categorical complexes. As we demonstrate, examples of such complexes arise in a variety of subjects including representation theory, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and differential topology. One of the key techniques we introduce is a totalization construction for categorical cubes which is particularly well-behaved in the presence of Beck-Chevalley conditions. As a direct application we establish a categorical Koszul duality result which generalizes previously known derived Morita equivalences among higher Auslander algebras and puts them into a conceptual context. We explain how spherical categorical complexes can be interpreted as higher-dimensional perverse schobers, and introduce Calabi-Yau structures on categorical complexes to capture noncommutative orientation data. A variant of homological mirror symmetry for categorical complexes is proposed and verified for $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^2$.

Formal category theory in $\infty$-equipments I

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of proarrow equipments to the $\infty$-categorical setting, termed $\infty$-equipments. These equipments take the form of particular double $\infty$-categories that support a notion of internal formal higher category theory. We will explore several examples of $\infty$-equipments. In particular, we will study the prototypical example given by the $\infty$-equipment of $\infty$-categories, and construct $\infty$-equipments of $\infty$-categories internal to general $\infty$-toposes as well. The final objective of this article is to study the fundamental notions of formal higher category theory within an arbitrary $\infty$-equipment. To this end, we not only follow the classical approach but also expand upon it.

Formalizing the $\infty$-Categorical Yoneda Lemma

Abstract:Formalized $1$-category theory forms a core component of various libraries of mathematical proofs. However, more sophisticated results in fields from algebraic topology to theoretical physics, where objects have "higher structure," rely on infinite-dimensional categories in place of $1$-dimensional categories, and $\infty$-category theory has thusfar proved unamenable to computer formalization. Using a new proof assistant called Rzk, which is designed to support Riehl-Shulman's simplicial extension of homotopy type theory for synthetic $\infty$-category theory, we provide the first formalizations of results from $\infty$-category theory. This includes in particular a formalization of the Yoneda lemma, often regarded as the fundamental theorem of category theory, a theorem which roughly states that an object of a given category is determined by its relationship to all of the other objects of the category. A key feature of our framework is that, thanks to the synthetic theory, many constructions are automatically natural or functorial. We plan to use Rzk to formalize further results from $\infty$-category theory, such as the theory of limits and colimits and adjunctions.

On cofinal functors of $\infty$-bicategories

Abstract:In this work, we study the notion of cofinal functor of $\infty$-bicategories with respect to the theory of partially lax colimits. The main result of this paper is a characterization of cofinal functors of $\infty$-bicategories via generalizations of the conditions of Quillen's Theorem A. As a key ingredient for the proof of our main theorem we produce for every functor of $\infty$-bicategories $f:\mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{D}$ an outer 2-Cartesian fibration $\mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C})\to \mathbb{D}$ which we identify it as the free fibration on the functor $f$.

Real K-theory for Waldhausen infinity categories with genuine duality

Abstract:We develop a new framework to study real $K$-theory in the context of $\infty$-categories. For this, we introduce Waldhausen $\infty$-categories with genuine duality, which will be the input for such $K$-theory. These are Waldhausen $\infty$-categories in the sense of Barwick equipped with a compatible duality and a refinement of their (lax) hermitian objects generalizing the concept of Poincaré $\infty$-categories of Lurie. They may also be thought of as a version of complete Segal spaces enriched in genuine $C_2$-spaces whose underlying $\infty$-category carries a compatible Waldhausen structure, since we show that their respective $\infty$-categories are equivalent. We define the real $K$-theory genuine $C_2$-spaces by means of an enriched version of the $S_\bullet$-construction, defined for Waldhausen $\infty$-categories with genuine duality. Moreover, we prove an Additivity Theorem for this $S_\bullet$-construction which leads to an Additivity Theorem for real $K$-theory. Furthermore, such real $K$-theory satisfy a universal property -- analogous to that proved by Barwick for algebraic $K$-theory of Waldhausen $\infty$-categories --: We prove that every theory can be universally turned into an additive theory and identify our real K-theory with the universal additive theory associated to the functor that associates to a Waldhausen $\infty$-category with genuine duality its maximal subspace. Finally, we promote the real $K$-theory genuine $C_2$-spaces to genuine $C_2$-spectra.

Abstract:We develop the theory of presentable categories internal to an $\infty$-topos $\mathcal{B}$. We provide several characterisations of these, including a description in terms of the associated sheaves of $\infty$-categories as well as an internal analogue of the Lurie-Simpson characterisation of presentable $\infty$-categories. For the latter, we develop a theory of internal filteredness and study the associated notion of accessible internal categories. We furthermore establish various structural results about presentable internal categories, such as adjoint functor theorems and a symmetric monoidal structure. We use the latter to identify the $\infty$-category of presentable $\infty$-categories which are tensored over $\mathcal{B}$ as a full subcategory of the $\infty$-category of presentable internal categories in $\mathcal{B}$. We provide two applications of our framework: in the first, we derive a general version of Diaconescu's theorem for $\infty$-topoi. In the second, we characterise dualisable objects in the $\infty$-category of modules over an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring in $\mathcal{B}$ as internally compact objects.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a theorem that proves a condition when an inclusion morphism between simplicial sets becomes a weak homotopy equivalence. Additionally, we present two applications of this result. The first application demonstrates that cofinal full inclusion functors of (\infty)-categories are weak homotopy equivalences. For our second application, we provide an alternative proof of Barwick's cofinality theorem of algebraic (K)-theory.
