Abstract:Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) is questioned for possibly damaging the micro structure of cement-based materials (CBMs), but this theme still has a lack of quantitative evidence. By using X-ray computed tomography (XCT), this study reported an experimental investigation on probing the pore structure damages in paste and mortar samples after a standard MIP test. XCT scans were performed on the samples before and after mercury intrusion. Because of its very high mass attenuation coefficient, mercury can greatly enhance the contrast of XCT images, paving a path to probe the same pores with and without mercury fillings. The paste and mortar showed the different MIP pore size distributions but similar intrusion processes. A grey value inverse for the pores and material skeletons before and after MIP was found. With the features of excellent data reliability and robustness verified by a threshold analysis, the XCT results characterized the surface structure of voids, and diagnosed the pore structure damages in terms of pore volume and size of the paste and mortar samples. The findings of this study deepen the understandings in pore structure damages in CBMs by mercury intrusion, and provide methodological insights in the microstructure characterization of CBMs by XCT.

Abstract:The molecular conformation and mobility of the intercalated surfactant molecules cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) have been studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution single-pulse 13C magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C SP MAS NMR) spectroscopy. The conformation and mobility of alkyl chains were found to be a function of the surfactant concentration. The splitting of the methylene scissoring mode at 1473-1463 cm(-1) and the rocking mode at 730-720 cm(-1) in FTIR are considered to be diagnostic of the packing density increase of the intercalated surfactants within the clay gallery. Compared with the 13C SP MAS NMR spectrum of CTMAB in the bulk state, 1-3 ppm upfield chemical shifts for end-methyl (deltaC16) and methylene (deltaC15, deltaC2-14) of the intercalated surfactant molecules in the hybrids indicate a freer conformational situation. For these hybrids, the conformational freedom decreases with increased of surfactant concentration. In addition, on approximately 2 ppm downfield shift for the C1 carbon atom in the hybrids with higher surfactant content suggests a special local environment. This study demonstrates the different mobility of carbon atoms in the intercalated alkyl chain.
Distribution of Inorganic Crystal Particles in Carnallite

Abstract:Particle size, surface composition and crystal configurations of Kvarkhan’s carnallite were investigated. Particle sizes and composition were determined by sieving and chemical analysis. The results showed that more than 90% of KCl·MgCl_2· 6H_2O crystal particles were larger than 0.177 mm, more than 75% of NaCl particles were smaller than 0.125 mm, and more than 90% of CaSO_ 4 particles were smaller than 0.074 mm. Surface compositions were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. Ca/Na of carnallite components were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of scanning electron photomicrograph and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated that all those crystal particles were present independently in carnallite.

Abstract:MXenes represent a large family of functionalized two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides and carbonitrides. However, most of the understanding on their unique structures and applications stops at the theoretical suggestion and lack of experimental support. Herein, the surface structure and intercalation chemistry of Ti3C2X are clarified at the atomic scale by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The STEM studies show that the functional groups (e.g., OH(-), F(-), O(-)) and the intercalated sodium (Na) ions prefer to stay on the top sites of the centro-Ti atoms and the C atoms of the Ti3C2 monolayer, respectively. Double Na-atomic layers are found within the Ti3C2X interlayer upon extensive Na intercalation via two-phase transition and solid-solution reactions. In addition, aluminum (Al)-ion intercalation leads to horizontal sliding of the Ti3C2X monolayer. On the basis of these observations, the previous monolayer surface model of Ti3C2X is modified. DFT calculations using the new modeling help to understand more about their physical and chemical properties. These findings enrich the understanding of the MXenes and shed light on future material design and applications. Moreover, the Ti3C2X exhibits prominent rate performance and long-term cycling stability as an anode material for Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:Estimation of the composition of planetary rocks and minerals is crucial for understanding their formation processes. In this study, we present the application of X‐ray nano‐computed tomography (nano‐XCT) for non‐destructive three‐dimensional (3‐D) phase analysis and estimation of phase abundances in rare Martian meteorite samples, specifically chassignite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2737. We determined the most suitable laser power for minimizing artifacts and maximizing phase contrast. By utilizing nano‐XCT, we successfully identified and segmented primary phases in the bulk meteorite sample. Additionally, we were able to locate and segment crystallized silicate melt inclusions within the meteorite. The phase abundances in bulk NWA 2737 and within melt inclusions calculated using nano‐XCT were in good agreement with previous studies that used thin section calculations, demonstrating the reliability of nano‐XCT as a non‐destructive alternative for estimating bulk phase abundances in rare samples. This study develops a benchmarking protocol and demonstrates the efficacy of nano‐XCT as a non‐destructive technique for generating an overview of phase distribution and assemblages of melt inclusions within rare samples. Future research can benefit from combining non‐destructive 3‐D phase assemblage estimations with non‐destructive 3‐D chemical analysis techniques to achieve a fully non‐destructive parental magma composition estimation of rare cumulate samples.

Abstract:Analytical TEM techniques have been used to characterize the structure and chemistry of chalcopyrite solar cell devices produced by elemental evaporation using a bi-layer process at Ts=400°C and Ts=550°C. Dislocations, stacking faults, twins and voids exist in both materials but at a reduced density at the higher deposition temperature. The higher processing temperature also improved the density and structure of the grain boundaries and created a less rough surface. The CdS layer coats the surface conformally, although the roughness impacts the structure. CdS fills the grooves in the surface and infiltrates lower density grain boundaries to significant depths. The chemistry of the grain boundaries does not appear to be significantly impacted by the presence of the Cd and S.

Abstract:Space-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements performed on gradient-etched CuInGaSe2 (CIGS) solar cells provide information about stress and texture depth profiles in the absorber layer. An important parameter for CIGS layer growth dynamics, the absorber thickness-dependent stress in the molybdenum back contact is analyzed. Texturing of grains and quality of the polycrystalline absorber layer are correlated with the intentional composition gradients (band gap grading). Band gap gradient is determined by space-resolved photoluminescence measurements and correlated with composition and strain profiles.

Abstract:Molybdenum nitride (MoNx) was perceived as carrier-selective contacts (CSCs) for crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells due to having proper work functions and excellent conductivities. However, the poor passivation and non-Ohmic contact at the c-Si/MoNx interface endow an inferior hole selectivity. Here, the surface, interface, and bulk structures of MoNx films are systematically investigated by X-ray scattering, surface spectroscopy, and electron microscope analysis to reveal the carrier-selective features. Surface layers with the composition of MoO2.51N0.21 form upon air exposure, which induces the overestimated work function and explains the origin of inferior hole selectivities. The c-Si/MoNx interface is confirmed to adopt long-term stability, providing guidance for designing stable CSCs. A detailed evolution of the scattering length density, domain sizes, and crystallinity in the bulk phase is presented to elucidate its superior conductivity. These multiscale structural investigations offer a clear structure-function correlation of MoNx films, providing key inspiration for developing excellent CSCs for c-Si solar cells.

Abstract:Silicon surface is one of the dominant recombination sites for silicon solar cells. Generally, the recombination ability of silicon surface is characterized in terms of surface recombination velocity. However, silicon surface actually contain a series of donor and acceptor levels across the silicon band gap, and therefore the surface recombination velocity is too general to provide detailed information of the silicon surface states. In this paper, we used the measured transient capacitance data to extract the detailed information (like defect energy levels, defect densities, and capture cross sections) of the silicon surface states. Furthermore, the influence of copper contamination on silicon surface states was examined, and it was found that copper contamination can change the localized energy levels of “clean” silicon surface states to the band-like energy levels, meanwhile the defect densities and capture cross sections were both enlarged.

Abstract:The complicated three-dimensional interior structures of the polycrystalline hollow zinc oxide microspheres were clearly obtained by the nondestructive nanocomputed tomography (nano-CT) technique. The parameters such as diameter, volume, porosity, and surface area were calculated by the quantitative analysis of reconstructed data. Especially, three single selected particles with different typical structures were separated and compared. With these results, the distinction of the particles can be clearly understood in nanoscale. This study reveals that nano-CT is an effective and competent tool for investigating the three-dimensional interior structures of nanomaterials in the natural environment.
A multimodal microcharacterisation of trace-element zonation and crystallographic orientation in natural cassiterite by combining cathodoluminescence, EBSD, EPMA and contribution of confocal Raman-in-SEM imaging

Abstract:In cassiterite, tin is associated with metals (titanium, niobium, tantalum, indium, tungsten, iron, manganese, mercury). Knowledge of mineral chemistry and trace-element distribution is essential for: the understanding of ore formation, the exploration phase, the feasibility of ore treatment, and disposal/treatment of tailings after the exploitation phase. However, the availability of analytical methods make these characterisations difficult. We present a multitechnical approach to chemical and structural data that includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based imaging and microanalysis techniques such as: secondary and backscattered electrons, cathodoluminescence (CL), electron probe microanalyser (EPMA), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and confocal Raman-imaging integrated in a SEM (RISE). The presented results show the complementarity of the used analytical techniques. SEM, CL, EBSD, EPMA provide information from the interaction of an electron beam with minerals, leading to atomistic information about their composition, whereas RISE, Raman spectroscopy and imaging completes the studies with information about molecular vibrations, which are sensitive to structural modifications of the minerals. The correlation of Raman bands with the presence/absence of Nb, Ta, Fe (heterovalent substitution) and Ti (homovalent substitution) is established at a submicrometric scale. Combination of the different techniques makes it possible to establish a direct link between chemical and crystallographic data of cassiterite.

Abstract:In early 2020, the University of New South Wales, Australia, took delivery of a new spectral cathodoluminescence (CL) system. Following a creative approach to installation during pandemic lockdowns over the course of the following year, involving a collaborative effort between facility staff, local engineers, and remote CL system engineers in Europe, the equipment was commissioned and immediately began to expand the types of information that could be obtained within our facility. Here we present a series of case studies of the first applications of this spectroscopic CL system across various multi-modal studies and a range of sample types with real-world applications. Kesterite Solar Cell Characterization for Device Optimisation: Kesterite (Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 ) is a material of great interest for renewable energy research, as a promising thin-film photovoltaic material that is both earth-abundant and environmentally benign. In order to continue to push the power conversion efficiency of kesterite-based photovoltaic devices beyond their current limits (max. 13.6% [ 1]) toward the level of potential commercial viability, the mechanisms of carrier loss need to be better understood. To this end, spectral (SEM) CL mapping was conducted to examine lateral and depth variations in signal wavelength and intensity within a kesterite cell.

Abstract:Performances and physical properties of high technology materials are influenced or even determined by their initial microstructure and by the behavior of impurity phases. Characterizing these impurities and their relations with the surrounding matrix is therefore of primary importance but it unfortunately often requires a destructive approach, with the risk of misinterpreting the observations. The improvement we have done in high resolution X-ray diffraction computed tomography combined with the use of an X-ray nanoprobe allows non-destructive crystallographic description of materials with microscopic heterogeneous microstructure (with a grain size between 10 nm and 10 μm). In this study, the grain localization in a 2D slice of a 20 μm solidified atomized γU-Mo particle is shown and a minority U(C,O) phase (1 wt. %) with sub-micrometer sized grains was characterized inside. Evidence is presented showing that the onset of U(C,O) grain crystallization can be described by a precipitation mechanism since one single U-Mo grain has direct orientation relationship with more than one surrounding U(C,O) grains.

Abstract:In this paper, we have investigated the behaviors of Cu precipitation in multi-crystalline silicon by intentionally contaminating. It is found that, the Cu impurities are easily gettered at the structural defects, i.e. grain-boundaries and dislocations. However, in the defect-free region, the Cu impurities tend to form different kinds of precipitates, strongly dependent on the contamination level. The dot-like precipitates are often formed in the samples with low temperature contamination, and the star-like ones in the samples with high temperature contamination. The microwave photoconductivity decay measurements indicate that the Cu precipitates have strong recombination activity, significantly reducing the minority carrier lifetime.

Abstract:An oxygen-free solar selective absorbing coating of Cu/TixSiyN/AlSiN was prepared on a Cu buffered stainless steel substrate by magnetron sputtering. This coating was prepared using a single target for each layer. A spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the optical properties, crystalline structure, morphology and composition of these coatings. The coating of Cu/TixSiyN/AlSiN has good optical properties (average absorption of 0.941 and emittance of 0.058) and excellent thermal stability. The performance criterion (PC) is 0.0365, when the solar selective absorbing coating is heated in air at 200 °C for 1200 h.

Characterization of a TiO₂/Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube Core-Shell Nanocomposite Synthesized by a Hydrothermal Method

Abstract:TiO₂ is a significant n-type semiconducting material because of its superior electric and photocatalytic properties. Although this material has been extensively studied as a semiconductor electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells for its inherent bandgap and its excellent electrical and chemical properties, the photoelectric efficiency is nevertheless lower than that of the Si-based solar cells, which is generally reported as 13-27%. On the other hand, various carbon structures have been studied to increase the overall charge transport efficiency by reducing the charge transport resistance in the cell while having high electric conductivity. These results are expected to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency when applied to dye-sensitized solar cells. We fabricated a TiO₂/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) core-shell structure by a hydrothermal method. The TiO₂ anatase phase in the TiO₂/MWCNT core-shell structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The core-shell nanostructure with a diameter of 127 nm to 211 nm was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The morphology of the TiO₂/MWCNT core-shell nanocomposite was also analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR) and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) method were used to observe the chemical bonding and specific surface area of the TiO₂/MWCNT core-shell nanocomposite, respectively. The TiO₂/MWCNT core-shell composites had a larger specific surface area of 92.00 m²/g, a larger pore volume of 0.33 cm³/g, and a larger pore size of 65.21 nm than commercial TiO₂ nanoparticles (P25). The TiO₂/MWCNT core-shell structure may provide a high-speed path for photoelectrons to pass quickly and will be useful for various applications, such as solar cells and photocatalysts.

Abstract:C/TiO2 composites were prepared with surface modified MWCNT sequentially after HCl treatment and TNB as titanium source. There is a single crystal structure which is anatase in all of the samples from the data of XRD. The SEM microphotographs of C/TiO2 composites show that the TiO2 particles were well mixed with the CNT. There are C, O and Al with strong Ti peaks in all samples from EDX results, and it also shows that the sample CT has much more amount of C and Ti content than that of sample HCT. Finally, the photocatalytic activities for the C/TiO2 composites have more effective than that of pristine TiO2.

Abstract:C/C composite with complicated microstructure is a multiphase material which includes a lot of cavities,delamination,and cracks.In this paper the microstructure of C/C composite was observed and analyzed by Micro-CT.Comparing with the conventional observation method,using Micro-CT can obtain the non-destructive and actual character of the microstructure in C/C composite.From the observation by Micro-CT,it was found that there are a lot of delamination and cracks on the interface between the carbon fiber bundles and the plumbago matrix,and there are a great deal of cavities in plumbago matrix.The density functions of the dimension about these cavities,delamination,and cracks which were acquired from statistic analysis provide the important foundation to analyze the relation between the microstructure and the mechanical property of C/C composite.

Abstract:Atomically precise metal-chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters (MCSCs) are supposed to be more attractive for functionalization than conventional metal-sulfide quantum dots owing to their potential ability of establishing structure-composition-property precise relationships. However, the accurate surface functionalization of such cluster-based species remains difficult. In this paper, we presented a facile method for synthesizing discrete MCSCs decorated with different functional groups via one-step solvothermal reaction, which was demonstrated to have better solvent dispersibility compared with ligand-free ones. In addition, the composites were also prepared by combining ligand-free clusters (or ligand-partially protected or amino-modified ones) with two-dimensional MXene nanosheets. And the composites derived from amino-modified clusters exhibited the optimal performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding interactions between modified amino groups and MXene nanosheets were verified by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. This work provides a facile approach for the surface functionalization of MCSCs, and facilitates to expand functionality of atomically precise nano-species.
