Abstract:Inspired by biomineralization, we develop a facile synthesis route to obtain 3D porous foam-like Na3V2(PO4)3@C composites consisting of ultra-small Na3V2(PO4)3 particles in situ wrapped with carbon architecture derived from yeast as storing sodium cathode. 3D carbon architecture with high electrical conductivity is endowed with important effect on bio-restricting the aggregation of Na3V2(PO4)3 nanoparticles, improving Na+ diffusion coefficient. As a result, the Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathode shows good rate performance with 109 mAh g−1 and 44 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C and 20 C, respectively. Besides, the storage mechanism and structure evolution of Na3V2(PO4)3@C have been certified by ex situ XRD and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The unique biomineralization process enables to improve the electrochemical performances of Na3V2(PO4)3 by a facile self-organized process in a friendly environment. Therefore, biomineralization is a promising way to prepare high-performance cathode material with mesoporous structure for batteries.

Abstract:Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is an effective and rapid method for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials. However, the control over size, morphology, and microstructure are rather limited in SCS. Here, we develop a novel ultrasonic-assisted solution combustion route to synthesize the porous and nano-sized Na3V2(PO4)3/C composites, and reveal the effects of ultrasound on the structural evolution of NVP/C. Due to the cavitation effects generated from ultrasonic irradiation, the ultrasonic-assisted SCS can produce honeycomb precursor, which can be further transformed into porous Na3V2(PO4)3/C with reticular and hollow structures after thermal treatment. When used as cathode material for Na-ion batteries, the porous Na3V2(PO4)3/C delivers an initial discharge capacity of 118 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and an initial coulombic efficiency of 85%. It can retain 93.8% of the initial capacity after 120 cycles at 0.2 C. The results demonstrate that ultrasonic-assisted SCS can be a new strategy to design crystalline nanomaterials with tunable microstructures.

Abstract:An easy and delicate approach using cheap carbon source as conductive materials to construct 3D sequential porous structural Na3V2(PO4)3/C(NVP/C) with high performance for cathode materials of sodium ion battery is highly desired. In this paper, the NVP/C with 3D sequential porous structure is constructed by a delicate approach named as "cooking porridge" including evaporation and calcination stages. Especially, during evaporation, the viscosity of NVP/C precursor is optimized by controlling the adding quantity of citric acid, thus leading to a 3D sequential porous structure with a high specific surface area. Furthermore, the NVP/C with a 3D sequential porous structure enables the electrolyte to interior easily, providing more active sites for redox reaction and shortening the diffusion path of electron and sodium ion. Therefore, benefited from its unique structure, as cathode material of sodium ion batteries, the 3D sequential porous structural NVP/C exhibits high specific capacities(115.7, 88.9 and 74.4 mA·h/g at current rates of 1, 20 and 50 C, respectively) and excellent cycling stability (107.5 and 80.4 mA·h/g are remained at a current density of 1 C after 500 cycles and at a current density of 20 C after 2200 cycles, respectively).

Abstract:Hierarchical V2O5 microspheres composed of stacked platelets are fabricated through a facile, low-cost, and energy-saving approach. The preparation procedure involves a room-temperature precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution and subsequent calcination. Because of this unique structure, V2O5 microspheres manifest a high capacity (266 mA h g(-1)), excellent rate capability (223 mA h g(-1) at a current density 2400 mA g(-1)), and good cycling stability (200 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)2F3 has been emerging as one of the most promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries due to its stable NASICON structure and fast Na+ diffusion. However, present methods for preparation of Na3V2(PO4)2F3 suffer from either high energy consumption or generating poor rate performance. Herein, a cost-effective solvothermal–ball-milling method is proposed to solve the problem. In the solvothermal process, the morphology of Na3V2(PO4)2F3 varies from 0D to 3D with changing pH, in which 3D Na3V2(PO4)2F3 at pH = 3 shows optimal purity due to the fastest growth rate. With Ketjenblack (KB) coating by short-time ball-milling, the Na3V2(PO4)2F3 can be further nanosized with a highly graphited carbon coating layer. The purest Na3V2(PO4)2F3@KB from pH = 3 exhibited an initial capacity of 138 mAh g–1 @ 0.5 C and 122 mAh g–1 @ 40 C. Moreover, ultrahigh dosage over an 80 mmol of V source in one 100 mL Teflon-lined autoclave has been achieved for the first time.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3V2(PO4)(3) is a promising electrode material for developing advanced sodium-ion batteries. Preparing Na3V2(PO4)(3) with good performance by a cost-effective and large-scale method is significant for industrial applications. In this work, a porous Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C cathode material with excellent electrochemical performance is successfully prepared by an agar-gel combined with freeze-drying method. The Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C cathode displayed specific capacities of 113.4 mAh.g(-1), 107.0 mAh.g(-1) and 87.1 mAh.g(-1) at 0.1 C, 1 C and 10 C, respectively. For the first time, the 500-mAh soft-packed symmetrical sodium-ion batteries based on Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C electrodes are successfully fabricated. The 500-mAh symmetrical batteries exhibit outstanding low temperature performance with a capacity retention of 83% at 0 degrees C owing to the rapid sodium ion migration ability and structural stability of Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C. Moreover, the thermal runaway features are revealed by accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) test for the first time. Thermal stability and safety of the symmetrical batteries are demonstrated to be better than lithium-ion batteries and some reported sodium-ion batteries. Our work makes it clear that the soft-packed symmetrical sodium ion batteries based on Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C have a prospect of practical application in high safety requirement fields. Facile Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Porous Interconnected Carbon Matrix Embedded with Sb Nanoparticles As Superior Anode for Na-ion Batteries

Abstract:The development of high-performance Na-ion batteries in order to meet the increasing demand of the industrial applications of energy storage requires low cost and large-scale preparation methods for battery electrodes with outstanding performance. In this work, we have designed a novel anode of three-dimensional porous interconnected carbon matrix embedded with Sb nanoparticles (Sb subset of 3DPC) via a scalable and facile polymer-blowing and galvanic replacement route. This designed electrode architecture provides large surface areas, large pore volumes and interconnected pore frameworks, supplying enlarged interface of the electrolyte and electrode, reducing the diffusion pathway and inhibiting the volume expansion of Sb during cyclic movement. The as-prepared Sb subset of 3DPC anode shows high Na-storage performance, such as an outstanding cycle stability (461 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) over 200 cycles) and exceptional high rate capability (349 mA h g(-1) at 5000 mA g(-1)). As for the application in the full Na-ion batteries, the assembled Sb subset of 3DPC//Na3V2(PO4)(3) full cell also shows remarkable rate capability. Such polymer-blowing-based approach provides a low cost, uncomplicated and large scale preparation method for porous and stable electrode materials and opens up a wide horizon in other electrochemical applications.
Ration Design of Porous Mn-doped Na3V2(PO4)3 Cathode for High Rate and Super Stable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A simple freeze-drying-assisted method is used to prepare various porous Mn-doped Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C composites. Rietveld refinement and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) are applied to probe the real substitute site of Mn and demonstrate that Mn ions successfully occupy the V sites. The Mn2+/Mn3+ doping in the vanadium site of Na3V2(PO4)(3) causes the lattice volume to expand with enlarged Na ion diffusion channels, which benefits Na thorn transportation and increases the ionic conductivity of Na3V2(PO4)(3). Furthermore, due to the charge compensation, the presence of Mn2+ in Na3V2(PO4)(3) leads to the formation of V4+, which improves the intrinsic conductivity and stabilizes the NASICON framework. Through the XPS results of the electrode under the fully charged or discharged states, the small and reversible plateau at ca. 3.85 V of the Mn-doped Na3V2(PO4)(3) electrode is ascribed to the activation of the Mn2+/Mn3+ redox couple. An optimized performance is achieved for Na3V1.8Mn0.2(PO4)(3)/C, which exhibits a capacity of 106.8 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 77.8 mAh g(-1) at up to 30 C. Abstract:A general polymer‐assisted spinodal decomposition strategy is used to prepare hierarchically porous sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)‐structured polyanion‐type materials (e.g., Na3V2(PO4)3, Li3V2(PO4)3, K3V2(PO4)3, Na4MnV(PO4)3, and Na2TiV(PO4)3) in a tetrahydrofuran/ethanol/H2O synthesis system. Depending on the boiling point of solvents, the selective evaporation of the solvents induces both macrophase separation via spinodal decomposition and mesophase separation via self‐assembly of inorganic precursors and amphiphilic block copolymers, leading to the formation of hierarchically porous structures. The resulting hierarchically porous Na3V2(PO4)3 possessing large specific surface area (≈77 m2 g−1) and pore volume (≈0.272 cm3 g−1) shows a high specific capacity of 117.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C achieving the theoretical value and a long cycling life with 77% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5 C. This method presented here can open a facile avenue to synthesize other hierarchically porous polyanion‐type materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are considered as prime alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale renewable energy storage units due to their low cost and the abundance of sodium bearing precursors in the earth's mineral deposits. In the current work, a 3D NASICON framework Na3V2(PO4)(3)/carbon cathode electrode with 20-30 nm Na3V2(PO4)(3) nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated interconnecting one-dimensional carbon nanofibers was fabricated using a simple and scalable electrospinning method. The Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C cathode showed an initial charge capacity of 103 mA h g(-1) and a discharge capacity of 101 mA h g(-1) (calculated on the total mass of Na3V2(PO4)(3) and carbon) at 0.1C rate, and retained stable discharge capacities of 77, 58, 39 and 20 mA h g(-1) at high current densities of 2C, 5C, 10C and 20C, respectively. Moreover, because of the efficient 1D sodium-ion transport pathway and the highly conductive network of Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C, the electrode exhibited high overall capacities even when cycled at high currents, extending its usability to high power applications.
Construction of Three-Dimensional Electronic Interconnected Na3V2(PO4)3/C As Cathode for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The NASICON (Sodium super ion conductor) type of Na3V2(PO4) (NVP) has a great potential for energy storage application due to its high voltage plateau, three-dimensional (3D) ionic diffusion channel, perfect thermal stability, and high structural robustness. Here, Na3V2(PO4)-based composites with 3D porous carbon skeleton structure were synthesized via hydrothermal methods. After a series of hydrolysis and polymerization processes, transparent colloid mainly containing (NH4)(4)Na2V10O28 phase was formed. The 3D porous hydrogel with the (NH4)(4)Na-2[V10O28]center dot 10H(2)O phase was produced by adjusting the reaction time. The product has a lamellar structure, and its ion is suitable to grow the nanosheets, and the present PO43- groups may be distributed in the (NH4)(4)Na-2[V10O28]center dot 10H(2)O phase of the interlayer structure, leading to the enhanced electronic conductivity. The 3D porous Na3V2(PO4)/C (NVP/C) with the size of 100-200 nm particles can be used as cathode for sodium ion batteries. The NVP/C delivers a specific capacity of 62.1 mAh g(-1) at 10 C. The excellent stability of NVP/C can be obtained with 98% capacity retention after 140 cycles at 1 C. After 2000 cycles (5 C), the capacity is still 80.4 mAh g(-1), with the capacity retention of about 86%. Abstract:A hydrogel self-templated method was developed to produce Na3V2(PO4)3@C@CNT 2D porous network (denoted as NVP@C@CNT) comprising 0D carbon coated Na3V2(PO4)3 nanoparticles and 1D carbon nanotubes. Such fascinating architecture offers high electronic and ionic conductivity, structure stability, as well as long-term cycling when used as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The cathode displays an ultralong cyclability (94% capacity retention after 4500 cycles at 5C) and high rate capability. Such performance derives from the synergistic effect of porous network structure and carbon coating, which accelerates ion diffusion and improves structural integrity. Equally important, the proposed method provides a new avenue for the preparation of 2D porous materials for advanced energy storage applications.
Recognition of V3+/V4+/V5+ Multielectron Reactions in Na3V(PO4)2: A Potential High Energy Density Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Na3V(PO4)2 was reported recently as a novel cathode material with high theoretical energy density for Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, whether V3+/V4+/V5+ multielectron reactions can be realized during the charging process is still an open question. In this work, Na3V(PO4)2 is synthesized by using a solid-state method. Its atomic composition and crystal structure are verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) joint refinement. The electrochemical performance of Na3V(PO4)2 is evaluated in two different voltage windows, namely 2.5-3.8 and 2.5-4.3 V. 51V solid-state NMR (ssNMR) results disclose the presence of V5+ in Na2-xV(PO4)2 when charging Na3V(PO4)2 to 4.3 V, confirming Na3V(PO4)2 is a potential high energy density cathode through realization of V3+/V4+/V5+ multielectron reactions.

Abstract:The mixed polyanionic material Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) combines the advantages of NaFePO4 and Na2FeP2O7 in capacity, stability, and cost. Herein, we synthesized carbon-coated hollow-sphere-structured Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) powders by a scalable spray drying route. The optimal sample can deliver a high discharge capacity of 107.7 mA h g-1 at 0.2C. It also delivers a capacity of 88 mA h g-1 at 10C and a capacity of retention of 92% after 1500 cycles. Ex situ X-ray diffraction analysis indicates a slight volume change (less than 3%) in the Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) lattice cell. Therefore, such a spraying-derived carbon-coated Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) powder is a very attractive cathode electrode for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Structurally stable Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) is regarded as a promising cathode due to its large theoretical specific capacity. However, the poor electrical conductivity of NVPF results in poor rate capability. Herein, the tNVPF with dense textured microsphere structure was prepared by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)-assisted solvothermal method. The unique microstructure assembled by ∼100 nm nanorods provides massive active sites and promotes the fast transmission of Na + carriers. The electronic conductivity of tNVPF is further improved through coating by carbonizing polyacrylamide (PAM) to form tNVPF@C with great Na+ storage performance. Textured carbon-coated Na3V2(PO4)2F3(tNVPF@C) microspheres deliver a highly specific capacity (113.6/74.7 mAh·g−1 at 0.2/10 C) and better long-term cycling performance with capacity retention ratio of 80.1% after 300 cycles at 5 C. Abstract:Na superionic conductor structured Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) has received considerable attention as a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries because of its higher energy density and three-dimensional open structure for Na+ diffusion channels. However, its insulating structure [PO4] results in significantly inferior conductivity, which severely limits the electrochemical performance of NVPF. In this study, uniform carbonized polyacrylonitrile-coated hierarchical Na3V2(PO4)2F3 multi-clustered hollow microspheres (NVPF-H@cPAN) were synthesized via a facile ethylene glycol-assisted hydrothermal approach, followed by a wet chemical method and heat treatment. Further, the possible formation mechanism of hierarchical Na3V2(PO4)2F3 multi-clustered hollow microspheres was investigated. The concentration of ethylene glycol and hydrothermal reaction time were found to play essential roles in the formation mechanism of the microspheres. The as-prepared NVPF-H@cPAN delivered a high discharge capacity of 116.2 mAh g−1 at 0.2C and impressive cycling stability of 85% at 5C after 2000 cycles. When assembled as NVPF-H@cPAN||commercial hard carbon (NVPF-H@cPAN||CHC) for sodium-ion full cells, which demonstrates a specific capacity of 107 mAh g−1 at 0.2C, thus achieving an energy density of 376.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 141 W kg−1. These results can be attributed to the structural regulation of multi-level clusters, which improved the Na+ diffusion rate and carbon coating strategy. Such a combination of structural regulation and carbon-coating strategy can provide a strategy to synthesize materials with multi-level clusters of hollow microspheres to increase the electronic conductivity and enhance the electrochemical performance of energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional V2O5 hollow structures have been prepared through a simple synthesis strategy combining solvothermal treatment and a subsequent thermal annealing. The V2O5 materials are composed of microspheres 2-3 mu m in diameter and with a distinct hollow interior. The as-synthesized V2O5 hollow microspheres, when evaluated as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, can deliver a specific capacity as high as 273 mAh.g(-1) at 0.2 C. Benefiting from the hollow structures that afford fast electrolyte transport and volume accommodation, the V2O5 cathode also exhibits a superior rate capability and excellent cycling stability. The good Li-ion storage performance demonstrates the great potential of this unique V2O5 hollow material as a high-performance cathode for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)(3) is a typical cathode material for sodium-ion batteries and is usually prepared by the sol-gel method. However, Na3V2(PO4)(3 )is far from the level of tailored preparation due to the lack of understanding of the structure evolution during the sol-gel process. Here, we revealed that the initially formed vanadyl citrate is cross-linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, forming large polymers. Therefore, the crystal size of the precursor as well as the final Na3V2(PO4)(3) can be controlled by adjusting the pH value of the solution. As a result, the optimized NVP-7 material exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 59.8 mAh g(-1) at 50 C and can still retain 82.9% of the initial capacity after 500 cycles at 1 C. This study provides a theoretical basis for controllable preparation of NVP materials by the sol-gel method.
