Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the first passive mode-locking operations of a diode-pumped Tm:YAG laser with a MoS2 saturable absorber. In the absence of a MoS2 saturable absorber, the Tm:YAG laser produced a 2.68 W continuous-wave (CW) output power at 2013.8 nm. Under passive mode-locking regime, a maximum average output power of 0.2 W at a pulse repetition rate of 232.2 MHz and a pulse width of about 280 ps were achieved in the experiment. In addition, the near-diffraction limited beam qualities of the CW Tm:YAG laser were achieved.

Abstract:Characteristics of Tm:YAG ceramic for high efficient 2-mu m lasers are analyzed. Efficient diode end-pumped continuous-wave and Q-switched Tm: YAG ceramic lasers are demonstrated. At the absorbed pump power of 53.2W, the maximum continuous wave (cw) output power of 17.2 W around 2016 nm was obtained with the output transmission of 5%. The optical conversion efficiency is 32.3%, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 36.5%. For Q-switched operation, the shortest width of 69 ns was achieved with the pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz and single pulse energy of 20.4 mJ, which indicates excellent energy storage capability of the Tm: YAG ceramic. Abstract:We demonstrate a widely tunable and passively mode-locked Tm:Y2O3 ceramic laser in-band pumped by a 1627-nm Raman fiber laser. A tuning range of 318 nm, from 1833 to 2151 nm, is obtained in the continuous-wave regime. The SESAM mode-locked laser produces Fourier-transform-limited pulses as short as 75 fs at ∼ 2.06 µm with an average output power of 0.26 W at 86.3 MHz. For longer pulse durations of 178 fs, an average power of 0.59 W is achieved with a laser efficiency of 29%. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first mode-locked Tm:Y2O3 laser in the femtosecond regime. The spectroscopic properties and laser performance confirm that Tm:Y2O3 transparent ceramics are a promising gain material for ultrafast lasers at 2 µm.

Abstract:In this letter, a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:GdYTaO4 laser with semiconductor saturable absorber mirror is demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The remarkably broad fluorescence line width of the novel Nd:GdYTaO4 mixed crystal resulted in a narrow pulse duration of 5.38 ps. At the absorbed pump power of 8.12 W, the average output power was 458 mW with a pulse repetition rate of 84 MHz. The maximum single pulse energy and peak power under this condition were estimated to be 5.48 nJ and 1.02 kW, respectively.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a diode-pumped electro-optical cavity-dumped Tm:YAP laser for the first time to our knowledge. A pulse width of 7.1 ns is achieved at a wavelength of 1996.9 nm. A maximum output power of 3.02 W is obtained with a pump power of 58.8 W at a repetition rate of 100 kHz and a high-voltage time of 1000 ns, corresponding to an overall optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 5.2%. In addition, we study the effect of repetition rate and high-voltage time on the output power characteristics of a cavity-dumped Tm: YAP laser.

Abstract:We report on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked Tm:(Lu,Sc)2O3 ceramic laser in-band pumped by a Raman fiber laser at 1627 nm. The nonlinear refractive index (n2) of the Tm:(Lu,Sc)2O3 ceramic has been measured to be 4.66 × 10-20 m2/W at 2000 nm. An average output power up to 1.02 W at 2060 nm is achieved for transform-limited 280-fs pulses at a repetition rate of 86.5 MHz, giving an optical efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power of 36.4%. Pulses as short as 66 fs at 2076 nm are produced at the expense of output power (0.3 W), corresponding to a spectral bandwidth of 69 nm. The present work reveals the potential of Tm3+-doped sesquioxide transparent ceramics for power scaling of femtosecond mode-locked bulk lasers emitting in the 2-µm spectral range.

Abstract:Highly transparent Tm:YAG ceramic was fabricated by a solid-state reaction and vacuum sintering. The optical properties, the microstructure, and the laser performance of the Tm:YAG ceramic were investigated. A Tm:YAG ceramic with an average grain size of similar to 10 mu m was obtained by sintering at 1750 degrees C for 10 h. The in-line transmittance was 84.0% at 2015 nm. The absorption coefficients at 681 and 785 nm were 8.23 and 3.27 cm(-1), respectively. The grain boundaries were clean and no secondary phase was observed. The 6 at.% Tm:YAG ceramic slab (1.2 mm x 5 mm x 6 mm) was end-pumped by a laser diode at 792 nm, and the maximum output power of 4.5 W was obtained with a slope efficiency of 20.5% at 2015 nm.

Abstract:y Passive mode-locked laser operation at 2012 nm based on Tm:YAG and GaAs-based saturable absorber mirrors is demonstrated. Continuous-wave mode-locking performance was observed, resulting in a pulse width of 47.9 ps and 117 mW average output power at 97.7 MHz. The mode-locked laser exhibits an excellent stability with a remarkably high extinction ratio of 72 dB above carrier.

Abstract:Continuous-wave mode-locked femtosecond 2 um solid-state laser with a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO4 as gain medium was experimentally demonstrated. The mode locked laser generated stable pulses with average output power as high as 531 mW, pulse duration of 496 fs, and repetition rate of 97 MHz at 1975 nm. The research results show that Tm:CaYAlO4 is an excellent gain medium for femtosecond pulse generation at 2um wavelength.

Abstract:We have successfully fabricated a new type of ytterbium-doped yttrium gadolinium aluminum garnet (Yb:GdYAG) laser ceramic using the solid-state reactive sintering method under vacuum condition. Continuous wave (CW) laser operation of the 5.0 at.% Yb:GdYAG ceramic laser has achieved 4.27 W output power with 26.7% slope efficiency. Passive mode-locking properties of the ceramic was also firstly demonstrated with a semiconductor saturable absorbing mirror (SESAM). Stable mode-locked pulses with 4.4 ps pulse width and a maximum output power of 3.75 W at the wavelength of 1030.4 nm have been generated.

Abstract:We report a diode-pumped intracavity second-harmonic generation mode-locked solid-state Tm:YAP laser operating at 1988 nm using a periodically poled congruent LiNbO3 as the nonlinear crystal. The threshold of continuous wave mode locking is 11.6 W. The maximum output power is 1.67 W, while the shortest pulse obtained is 4.7 ps at a repetition rate of 97.09 MHz.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated a diode-pumped acousto-optical cavity-dumped Tm:YAP laser for the first time. The pulses were coupled out of the lateral surface of the cavity when radio frequency signal was loaded on the acousto-optical modulator. A maximum output power of 1.28 W was obtained with pump power of 40.3 W at a repetition rate of 200 kHz, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 4.7%. Abstract:We discuss what we believe is the first continuous-wave mode-locked Ho:YAG ceramic laser. We produced a mode-locked pulse using an acousto-optic modulator. We used a 1.91 mu m Tm-fiber laser as the pump source. At the incident pump power of 11.4 W, we achieved the maximum output power of 1.84 W at 2122.1 nm in a continuous-wave mode-locked regime. We obtained a short-duration pulse of 241.5 ps at a repetition frequency of 82.15 MHz and achieved the beam quality factor M-2 of 1.2. In addition, the maximum single pulse energy was 22.4 nJ. Abstract:A high-energy, high-peak-power Q-switched Tm:YAG laser at 2.02 μm with a tunable repetition rate from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz and pulse duration in the hundreds of nanoseconds is demonstrated. The high energy output was achieved by employing a thermally stable linear cavity, including two compact laser diode continuous-wave side-pumped Tm:YAG laser modules. For Q-switched operation, stable Q-switched performance from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz was realized at near-room temperature. At a repetition rate of 100 Hz, the laser delivered a maximum pulse energy of 215 mJ with a pulse duration of 124.4 ns, resulting in a peak power of up to 1.73 MW. When the repetition rate was tuned to 200 Hz, 500 Hz, and 1000 Hz, pulse energies of 212 mJ, 125.6 mJ, and 68.2 mJ were obtained, with pulse durations of 133.6 ns, 176.3 ns, and 262 ns, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the highest single pulse energies and peak powers ever accomplished for a diode-pumped Q-switched Tm-doped 2 μm laser operating at high repetition rates exceeding 100 Hz.

Abstract:A Tm-doped mixed sesquioxide ceramic laser is mode-locked near 2 µm using InGaAsSb quantum-well semiconductor saturable absorber and chirped mirrors for dispersion compensation. Maximum average output power of 175 mW is achieved for a pulse duration of 230 fs at a repetition rate of 78.9 MHz with a 3% output coupler. Applying a 0.2% output coupler pulses as short as 63 fs are generated at 2.057 µm.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in developing ultrafast laser sources around 2-μm wavelength range. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Tm:YAG ceramic laser using graphene as a mode locker. By transferring graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition onto Au-coated mirror as saturable absorber, continuous wave mode locking is successfully obtained in the Tm:YAG ceramic laser. The generated mode-locked pulses in 2-μm spectral region have a pulse width as short as 2.8 ps, with a maximum average output power of 158 mW and repetition rate of 98.7 MHz. The mode-locked mid-infrared pulses are very stable having a multitude of potential applications such as ultrafast molecule spectroscopy, mid-IR nonlinear frequency conversion, etc.

Abstract:A diode-pumped single frequency Tm:YAG laser operating at 2 μm is demonstrated in this letter. The laser crystal is controlled at room temperature by using a thermoelectric cooler. Two solid uncoated fused silica etalons are employed to narrow the laser line-width, the thicknesses of which are 0.1 mm and 1 mm, respectively. By tuning the angle of the etalons, single frequency laser is achieved and the oscillating wavelength can be changed from 2008 nm to 2021 nm. And at each wavelength, single-frequency laser is achieved. The maximum single frequency laser power is up to 75.0 mW with the central wavelength of 2013.9 nm. To our knowledge, this is the first time to obtain single-frequency Tm:YAG laser of 75.0 mW with F-P etalons in the cavity.

Abstract:Mode-locked laser operation near 2.05 µm based on a mixed sesquioxide Tm:LuYO3 ceramic is demonstrated. Continuous-wave and wavelength-tunable operation is also investigated. Employing a GaSb-based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as a saturable absorber, a maximum average output power of 133 mW is obtained for a pulse duration of 59 fs. Pulses as short as 54 fs, i.e., eight optical cycles are generated at a repetition rate of ∼78MHz with an average output power of 51 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulse duration ever achieved from Tm-based solid-state mode-locked lasers.
