Abstract:Abstract We report on the high-power and room temperature operation of an Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser at ∼2.7 μm based on home-developed high optical quality ceramic samples. Pumped directly into the upper laser level with a spectrally narrowed 976 nm laser diode beam shaped to have a 1D top-hat profile, the laser-generated 13.4 W of CW output power with a slope efficiency of 16.0% with respect to absorbed pump power. In a modified resonator design, a lasing slope efficiency of 23.7% has been demonstrated. To our knowledge, this represents the highest power at ∼2.7 μm spectral region from a room temperature sesquioxide laser.

Abstract:We developed a new method to fabricate a silica microsphere coated by a thin layer of Er : Yb-doped phosphate glass. The. coated microsphere possessed high-Q whispering-gallery modes and formed single-mode and multimode microlasers in the both 1550- and 1040-nm bands. A low-loss fiber taper was used to not only launch the pump power around 980 nm into the microsphere, but also collect the resulting laser emissions. In our experiment, the threshold pump power as low as 30 mu W of a single longitudinal mode was obtained.

Abstract:A Yb YAG ceramic slab is designed theoretically and fabricated, and the high power laser output is achieved at 1030 nm under room-temperature with InGaAs diode pumping, 1030 nm seed laser injecting and doublepass amplifying. The amplified laser power is 5.97 kW when the total pumping power is 19.98 kW and the injected power of the seed laser is 1.18 kW. The optical -to -optical conversion efficiency is 21.0% and the slope efficiency is 27.9%. The transmission wavefront of the Yb:YAG ceramic slab is measured and the output powers with different coupling efficiencies and working temperatures arc simulated. The experimental results show that the high power laser output can be achieved in Yb YAG under room-temperature with high intensity pumping and high intensity seed laser injecting.

Abstract:We report on high power operation of Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser at ~1.6 {\mu}m using low scattering loss, 0.25 at.% Er3+ doped ceramic sample fabricated in-house via co-precipitation process. The laser is in-band pumped by an Er, Yb fiber laser at 1535.6 nm and generates 10.2 W of continuous-wave (CW) output power at 1640.4 nm with a slope efficiency of 25% with respect to the absorbed pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of ~1.6 {\mu}m Er:Y2O3 laser at room temperature. The prospects for further scaling in output power and lasing efficiency via low Er3+ doping and reduced energy-transfer upconversion are discussed.

Abstract:We report on single-longitudinal-mode and tunable operation of an Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser at ∼2.7 μm using intracavity Fabry-Perot etalons combined with a birefringent filter. The laser is pumped with a high brightness, narrow linewidth diode source at ∼980 nm and generated over 240 mW of linearly polarized output power at 2717 nm for an absorbed pump power of 5.1 W. The wavelength tuning range demonstrated was spanned from 2708.6 nm–2741.2 nm, with output powers of >220 mW in the whole tuning range.

Abstract:Using a low non-saturable loss Bragg-reflector-based semiconductor saturable mirror, a passively Q-switched Er:Lu2O3 ceramic laser at 2.7 mu m demonstrated short pulse-width and efficient operation, generating stable pulses of 70 ns pulse-width and similar to 71 kHz repetition rates. Over 692 mW of average output power was measured, corresponding to a pulse energy of similar to 9.8 mu J. In a modified resonator design of reduced round-trip time, pulses of 32 ns duration were generated. The achieved results suggest that Er:Lu2O3 ceramic could be a promising gain medium for efficient and high power pulsed laser generation at 2.7 mu m. The prospects for further improvement in laser performance at this wavelength are discussed.

Abstract:We report on the direct generation of the high-power optical vortices at ∼2.7 μm from an Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser end-pumped by an annular pump beam using a simple capillary fiber-based pump beam conditioning scheme. Taking advantage of the thermal gradient on the gain medium and mode matching between the pump and oscillating modes, vortex beams with a controllable topological charge order of l = 1 and l = 2 were successfully achieved. The laser yields 4.65 W of output power at an absorbed power of 19.8 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 25.9% with respect to the absorbed pump power. Adaptable beam profiles from a shallow crater-shape to quasi-top-hat intensity patterns were directly produced by actively defining the gain distribution in the ceramic, generating 4-W shallow crater-shape beams and 3.9-W quasi-top-hat beams, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 22.0% and 22.7%, respectively. Such optical vortices and tailored spatial intensity profiles in the 3-µm spectral region will enable novel applications, such as super-resolution molecular spectroscopy and material processing.

Abstract:A high-power Tm:YAG ceramic slab laser is reported. Deliberate thermal management was made to dissipate the heat effectively and release the stress in ceramics. The influence of pump wavelength on laser performance was investigated. A maximum of 52 W output power was achieved, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 27.8 % with respect to the incident pump power. As to our knowledge, this is the highest 2-μm laser output power reported in Tm:YAG ceramic lasers. This result proves that Tm:YAG laser ceramic is a promising candidate for 2-μm high-power laser applications.

Abstract:We report a high-power diode-laser (LD) side-pumped rod Tm:YAG laser of around 2 mu m. The laser was water-cooled at 8 degrees C and yielded a maximum output power of 267 W at 2.07 mu m, which is the highest output power for an all solid-state cw 2.07 mu m rod Tm:YAG laser reported as far as we know. Abstract:We report on an acousto-optic Q-switched 1645 nm Er:YAG ceramic laser resonantly pumped by using an Er,Yb fiber laser at 1532 nm. Maximum continuous wave output powers of 2.1 W and 2.4 W were obtained for 10% and 20% transmission OCs under 10.5 W of incident pump power, respectively. In Q-switched mode, the laser produced pulses with ~3.7 mJ energy and 82 ns width at 200 Hz repetition rate for 20% transmission OC under 8.6 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a peak power of ~45 kW.

Abstract:We demonstrated a 967 nm diode end-pumped Er:GSGG laser operated at 2.794 Micrometer with spectrum width 3.6 nm in the continuous wave(CW) mode. The maximum output power of 440 mW is obtained at an incident pumping power of 3.4 W, which corresponds to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 13% and slope efficiency of 13.2%. The results suggest that short cavity and efficient cooling setup for crystal are advantageous to improve laser performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate the performance of a 968-nm laser-diode (LD) side-pumped Er,Pr:YAP laser in free-running and electro-optical (EO) Q-switched modes with emission at 2.7 mu m, respectively. In the free-running mode, a maximum power of 11 W is achieved at a working frequency of 150 Hz and a pulse width of 200 mu s, corresponding to the single pulse output energy of 73.3 mJ and slope efficiency of 13.3%. In the EO Q-switching mode, a giant pulse laser is obtained with pulse energy of 20.5 mJ, pulse width of 61.4 ns, and peak power of 0.33 MW at the highest working frequency of 150 Hz, corresponding to the energy extraction efficiency of 71.4%. In addition, dual-wavelength laser at 2713 and 2732 nm and beam quality factors M-x(2) /M-y(2) of 6.62/6.66 are measured, respectively. The results indicate that a 2.7-mu m laser with a high repetition rate and high peak power can be realized through LD side-pumped and EO Q-switched Er,Pr:YAP crystal.
