Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:The poor extinction ratio and polarization cross talk of a general polarizing beam splitter (PBS) promote us to propose a high-precision polarizing beam splitting system,which consists of a PBS and polarizers.The additional polarizers are insert into reflection channel and transmission channel of the PBS,and the transmission axis direction of polarizer is adjusted,which can minimize the polarization cross talk.Both the theoretical calculation and numerical simulation demonstrate that this polarizing beam splitting system can achieve polarization splitting with higher accuracy.The experimental results show that when the intensity ratio of incident light is-47.5 dB,the polarizing beam splitting error caused by a general PBS is 57.3％,while it is 14.3％ after adding polarizer.When the intensity ratio of incident light is 47.8 dB,the polarizing beam splitting error caused by a general PBS is 15.5％,while it is 8.6 ％ after adding polarizer.The proposed polarizing beam splitter system is simple and practical,which can be employed in many polarized optical systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:An efficient polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on an optofluidic ring resonator (OFRR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The PBS relies on the large effective refractive index difference between transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization states, since the silica-microcapillary-based OFRR possesses a slab-like geometry configuration in the cross section through which the circulating light travels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first OFRR-based PBS. In our work, the maximum polarization splitting ratio of up to 30 dB is achieved. Besides, water and ethanol are pumped into the core of the silica microcapillary respectively, and the maximum wavelength tuning range of 7.02 nm is realized when ethanol flows through the core, verifing the tuning principle of the PBS effectively. With such a good performance and simple scheme, this OFRR-based PBS is promising for applications such as tunable optical filters, demultiplexers, and routers.

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:A novel polarisation beam splitter (PBS) with a high extinction ratio in a broad band has been proposed and realised by cascading a bent directional coupler and a low-loss transverse-magnetic (TM)-pass polariser based on a subwavelength grating. The realised PBS has a footprint as small as 3 x 22.5 mu m, a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB) and a low excess loss (similar to 1 dB) are obtained over a broad band of similar to 60 nm for both transverse-electric and TM polarisations.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:A compact and ultrabroadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) utilizing a hybrid plasmonic Y-branch (HPYB) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The HPYB consists of a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a horizontal HPW formed by silicon (Si) and silver (Ag) strip waveguides sandwiched with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, in which the vertical and horizontal hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) are excited by the input transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The HPMs are split into different ports and coupled back to TE and TM modes to implement the polarization splitting function. A simplified and compact HPYB is robust for the HPMs' generation. The structure is wavelength insensitive since the HPMs' excitation is weakly correlated to the optical wavelengths. The simulation results show that the HPYB-based PBS has a compact footprint of $5 \times 1.8\ \mu\text{m}^2$ and an ultralarge working bandwidth of 285 nm, with the polarization crosstalk <; -10 dB and the worst-case TE (TM) mode insertion loss of -1.53 (-2.35) dB. The device also exhibits a large fabrication tolerance of 210-nm variation (from -100 to 110 nm) to the waveguide width for both polarizations.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.

Abstract:Silicon photonic polarization beam splitter (PBS) is a crucial component for on-chip polarization management. PBSs typically function based on wavelength-dependent mechanisms such as evanescent coupling and modal interference. As a result, constructing a PBS with a broad bandwidth, low insertion loss, and high extinction ratio remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel method for achieving a PBS that is almost independent of the wavelength, which involves engineering the modal birefringence of subwavelength grating waveguides and utilizing reciprocal mode transitions. An input taper is embedded in polarization-selective metamaterials (PSMs), which are made up of two sets of subwavelength gratings arranged in different directions. As the width of the input taper decreases, the waveguide mode is no longer supported and transits into a single-mode-like (SML) component guided in the SWG waveguide. By exploiting the principle that a mode will preferentially evolve into the mode with the closest effective refractive index, polarization beam splitting is achieved during the transition of waveguide modes into SML components guided in SWGs with different arrangement directions. Results show that the proposed PBS achieves a high extinction ratio of more than 23 dB throughout a bandwidth of 600 nm (1.2-1.8 mu m) for both polarizations. For TE/TM polarization, the bandwidth to achieve an insertion loss of lower than 0.41/1 dB is as large as 600 nm (1.2-1.8 mu m)/530 nm (1.23-1.76 mu m). As far as we know, this is the PBS with the most superior broadband performance proposed till now.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter based on metasurface-assisted silicon nitride Y-junction for mid-infrared wavelengths is proposed and numerically investigated. By properly selecting the structural parameters using the finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm, the input fundamental transverse-magnetic (TM0) and transverse-electric (TE0) modes can be converted and separated from each other with high efficiency. Simulation results exhibit that the conversion efficiencies for TM0-to-TE1 polarization and TE0-to-TM0 polarization are respectively 97.4% and 97.6%. At the mid-infrared wavelength of 2. 5μm, the polarization extinction ratios of the designed PBS with the input TM0 and TE0 modes are 27.45 and 27.61 dB. The corresponding insertion losses are 0.21 and 0.31 dB. Within a bandwidth from 2. 45μm to 2.55μm, the polarization extinction ratio is greater than 19.48 dB and the insertion loss is less than 1.41 dB.

Abstract:A high-performance silicon-based polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally by using an improved structure with cascaded bent directional couplers. The measured extinction ratio (ER) is >35dB and the excess losses (EL) is <0.35dB around the central wavelength for both polarizations. The present PBS has a compact footprint of similar to 6.9 x 20 mu m(2). The measured bandwidths for an ER of >20dB, >25dB and >30dB are similar to 135nm, similar to 95nm and similar to 70nm, respectively, while the measured EL is <1dB and <0.5dB in a bandwidth of similar to 140nm and similar to 85nm, respectively. The fabrication tolerance of the core-width variation is as large as +/- 40nm, which makes the fabrication very easy. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose a design of a highly litter (polarization beam splitter [PBS]) based on an indefinite medium. Due to the strong anisotropy, the splitting angle in the indefinite medium is controlled by the orientation angle and can reach to 90° which is much larger than that in a birefringence crystal (BC). Based on this property, a thin indefinite medium film can dramatically enlarge the walk-off distance between two light paths, making the PBS much more efficient and tunable. With the indefinite medium, this design may also inspire and prompt the improvement of the BC optical devices, such as an interferometer system.

Abstract:A novel compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a silicon nitride-silica-silicon horizontal slot waveguide is numerically proposed, to the best of our knowledge. In the slot waveguide, the transverse electric (TE) mode propagates through the silicon layer, while the transverse magnetic (TM) mode is confined in the slot region. By utilizing an asymmetric directional coupler (DC) and bent directional coupler (bent DC) consisting of a slot waveguide and a thin silicon waveguide, PBSs with 14.6 μm (DC) and 5.2 μm (bent DC) coupling regions are obtained. Without cascading other structures, the DC PBS shows a low insertion loss (IL) of 0.4 (0.2) dB and high extinction ratio (ER) of 31.56 (24.61) dB for a TE (TM) port around 1.55 μm, while the IL and ER of the bent DC PBS are 0.4 (0.15) dB and 35.83 (21.74) dB, respectively. The proposed PBSs also have a good fabrication tolerance and broad bandwidth (>40 nm) for an ER of >20 dB.

Abstract:A silicon-based polarizing beam splitter (PBS) working at the 2 μm wavelength band is proposed and demonstrated experimentally by using a bent directional coupler assisted with a nano-slot waveguide. The nano-slot width is chosen as 180 nm so that the present PBS can be fabricated with MPW foundries. In theory, the designed PBS has extinction ratios (ERs) of >15 dB and >30 dB for TM- and TE- polarizations in the wavelength range of 1825-2020 nm, respectively. For the fabricated PBS, the excess losses (ELs) are low (∼0.5 dB) while the measured results show the ERs are >15 dB and >20 dB for TM- and TE-polarizations in the wavelength band of 1860-1980 nm.
Compact and High-Performance Silicon-on-insulator Polarization Beam Splitter Based on Microring Resonator

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated numerically by utilizing the full vectorial mode-matching (FVMM) theory and the coupled mode theory (CMT), which are introduced in the aspects of the width of waveguide, the height of waveguide, the radius of microring, and coupling coefficient, etc. Simultaneously, the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method, a powerful and accurate method for finite size structure, is chosen to simulate and design this PBS. When TE and TM polarized light at 1.55 mu m are launched into the input port simultaneously, the resonator will drop TM polarized light to the drop port and transmit TE polarized light to the through port. In this way, two orthogonal polarization states are split and transferred to different output ports. The extinction ratio in the order of 10dB is achieved initially based on our recent work. The initial experimental results are also given, which includes three microring resonator with the radius of 15 mu m, 10 mu m, and 5 mu m, respectively. The proposed PBS structure could be utilized to develop ultracompact optical polarization modulating device for large-scale photonic integration and optical information processing.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) with low excess loss (EL) and a high extinction ratio (ER) is proposed and demonstrated for the case with 340 nm thick silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Here the PBS is realized by using cascaded adiabatic dual-core tapers, which consist of a strip core and a subwavelength-grating core. For the designed PBS, which has a 33.6 µm long mode-evolution region, the ELs are ${ \lt }{0.3}\;{\rm dB}$<0.3dB, and the ERs are ${ \gt }{20}\;{\rm dB}$>20dB for both TE and TM polarizations in an ultra-broad bandwidth of ${ \gt }{270}\;{\rm nm}$>270nm (1400-1670 nm) in theory. For the fabricated PBS, the measured bandwidths for achieving ERs of ${\sim}{20}$∼20 and ${\sim}{25}\;{\rm dB}$∼25dB are 240 and 220 nm, while the 1 dB bandwidth is as large as 230 nm, which are the largest bandwidths reported to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization beam splitter (PBS) with excellent performance in terms of ultrahigh extinction ratio and ultralow insertion loss. The PBS consists of two dual-stage etched asymmetrical directional couplers, which are cascaded by a bend waveguide to form a folded structure. In the PBS, the fundamental transverse magnetic ( ) mode is efficiently cross-coupled to the cross-port, while the fundamental transverse electric ( ) mode outputs at the through-port. Thanks to the cascaded structure and dual-stage etching, a silicon-on-insulator-based PBS with ultrahigh extinction ratio and ultralow insertion loss is achieved. The measurement results reveal an extinction ratio beyond 25 dB and an insertion loss less than 0.7 dB within a wide bandwidth of 175 nm for the and modes.
