Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab is presented. In the designed photonic crystal, the TE polarization is negatively refracted, while the TM polarization is positively refracted. The photonic crystal is composed of silicon pillars in a triangular lattice. The whole device is very compact (20x20 mu m(2)), and is compatible with the planar integration. The measurement results show that the extinction ratio is similar to 15dB from 1530 to 1610nm.

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:A compact and ultrabroadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) utilizing a hybrid plasmonic Y-branch (HPYB) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The HPYB consists of a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a horizontal HPW formed by silicon (Si) and silver (Ag) strip waveguides sandwiched with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, in which the vertical and horizontal hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) are excited by the input transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The HPMs are split into different ports and coupled back to TE and TM modes to implement the polarization splitting function. A simplified and compact HPYB is robust for the HPMs' generation. The structure is wavelength insensitive since the HPMs' excitation is weakly correlated to the optical wavelengths. The simulation results show that the HPYB-based PBS has a compact footprint of $5 \times 1.8\ \mu\text{m}^2$ and an ultralarge working bandwidth of 285 nm, with the polarization crosstalk <; -10 dB and the worst-case TE (TM) mode insertion loss of -1.53 (-2.35) dB. The device also exhibits a large fabrication tolerance of 210-nm variation (from -100 to 110 nm) to the waveguide width for both polarizations.

Abstract:To overcome disadvantages of low transmission efficiency and high dependence on the incident angle for the transmitting type polarization beam splitter (PBS), a highly efficient PBS based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab is proposed, which consists of a honeycomb lattice of GaAs cylinders in air. The PBS has a normal refraction for TE polarization and a negative refraction for the other polarization (TM polarization) so that it can separate these two polarization beams totally in space. Anti-reflection layers (ARLs) at the surfaces of the photonic crystal slab are introduced and relevant parameters are optimized to improve the transmission efficiency. Two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation results show that, in a wide angle range (about 20°), in a normalized circular frequency range of ω =0.20~0.23 × 2πc/a, the transmission intensity can reach over 98% for both TE and TM polarization.

Abstract:A novel polarisation beam splitter (PBS) with a high extinction ratio in a broad band has been proposed and realised by cascading a bent directional coupler and a low-loss transverse-magnetic (TM)-pass polariser based on a subwavelength grating. The realised PBS has a footprint as small as 3 x 22.5 mu m, a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB) and a low excess loss (similar to 1 dB) are obtained over a broad band of similar to 60 nm for both transverse-electric and TM polarisations.

Abstract:Negatively and positively refractive behaviors are achieved in a two-dimensional photonic crystal of pillar type for TE and TM polarizations, respectively, at the same frequency. The photonic crystal is formed by a triangular lattice of silicon pillars of finite height on a silicon substrate. A polarization beam splitter based on such a photonic-crystal slab is demonstrated. Measurements at near infrared wavelengths indicate that two beams of different polarizations can be split with an extinction ratio of over 10dB in a wide wavelength range.

Abstract:We propose a two-dimensional photonic crystal based polarization beam splitter. The central idea of this polarization beam splitter relies on negative refraction of one polarization and conventional refraction of the other, leading to a spatial separation of two orthogonal polarizations. Finite-difference time-domain simulations are carried out in order to demonstrate our proposed idea. Our results indicate that this polarization beam splitter possesses a large separate angle for two orthogonal polarizations and can be made ultracompact.

Abstract:Modern-day optical systems are evolving towards miniaturization and integration, leading to higher performance demands for polarizing beam splitters (PBSs). A simple-structure and high-performance PBS based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) with As 2 S 3 layer is proposed. The finite element method (FEM) and classical coupled-mode theory (CMT) are utilized to investigate the performance of this PBS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PBS can achieve a minimum length of 2.65 mm, a minimum extinction ratio of −64 dB, an operating bandwidth of 420 nm, and a minimum insertion loss of 0.03 dB when the optimal parameters include cladding hole diameter of 1.0 μm, central hole diameter of 2.0 μm, lattice spacing of 2.0 μm, and As 2 S 3 ring layer thickness of 50 nm. Moreover, it also possesses a high birefringence of 3.58 × 10 −3 and a negative dispersion of −30 ps/km/nm at 1.55 μm. It is believed that the proposed PBS holds great potential to become a critical device in optical multiplexing technologies.

Abstract:In this work, a polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on surface plasmonic resonance is proposed and realized in a designed photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The PCF consists of two kinds of air holes with different diameters. Two solid silica cores near the center of the PCF are established by removing the cladding air holes. A gold film is plated at the external surface of the central air hole of the PCF to excite the surface plasmonic resonance. In order to minimize the length and improve the operation bandwidth of the PBS, the influences of the transversal structural parameters of the PCF are investigated in the context of both X and Y polarization beams. It was found that a 123.6-μm-long PBS with an operation bandwidth of 314 nm could be realized after the global optimization of five structural parameters. The proposed PBS may have potential applications in micro-/nano-optical systems for sensing and communications.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and realized for silicon photonic integrated circuits with a 340-nm-thick silicon core layer by introducing an asymmetric directional coupler (ADC), which consists of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire and a subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguide. The SWG is introduced to provide an optical waveguide which has much higher birefringence than a regular 340-nm-thick SOI nanowire, so that it is possible to make the phase-matching condition satisfied for TE polarization only in the present design when the waveguide dimensions are optimized. Meanwhile, there is a significant phase mismatching for TM polarization automatically. In this way, the present ADC enables strong polarization selectivity to realize a PBS that separates TE and TM polarizations to the cross and through ports, respectively. The realized PBS has a length of similar to 2 mu m for the coupling region. For the fabricated PBS, the extinction ratio (ER) is 15-30 dB and the excess loss is 0.2-2.6 dB for TE polarization while the ER is 20-27 dB and the excess loss is 0.3-2.8 dB for TM polarization when operating in the wavelength range of 1520-1580 nm. Abstract:This paper presents a novel pentagonal structure dual-core photonic crystal fiber polarizing beam splitter (PS-DC-PCF PBS) filled with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in the central hole. Unlike previous designs with symmetric arrangements, the upper and lower halves of the structure have different air hole arrangements. The upper half consists of air holes arranged in a regular quadrilateral pattern, while the lower half features a regular hexagonal arrangement of air holes. By filling the central hole with birefringent liquid crystal, the birefringence of the structure is enhanced, reducing the coupling lengths along the x polarization and y polarization directions. The polarization properties, coupling characteristics, and the influence of different structural parameters on the extinction ratio of the polarizing beam splitter are analyzed using the full-vector finite element method. Simulation results demonstrate that the designed PS-DC-PCF PBS achieves a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of 72.94 dB with a splitting length of only 61.9 μm and a wide operating bandwidth of 423 nm (1.324–1.747 μm), covering most of the O, E, S, C, L, and U communication bands. It exhibits not only ultra-short splitting lengths and ultra-wide splitting bandwidth but also good manufacturing tolerances and anti-interference capabilities. The designed PS-DC-PCF PBS could provide crucial device support for future all-optical communication systems and has potential applications in fiber optic communication or fiber laser systems.

Abstract:Many devices based on silicon and other photonic integrated circuit platforms exhibit significant polarization dependence. Polarization beam splitter (PBS) is a device that split optical signals into transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Among various PBSs, asymmetric directional couplers are widely used due to their fine performance, but their working bandwidth is limited due to wavelength changes that can lead to deviations in effective refractive index and coupling strength. We propose a PBS, which uses metamaterial anisotropy to replace structural asymmetry and break the bandwidth bottleneck. It achieves good performance in the wavelength range of 258 nm, where the extinction ratio of the TM polarization is greater than 24 dB and that of the TE polarization is greater than 26 dB. It covers the E, S, C, L, and U bands, and the coupling area is as small as 7.25×2.625 μm, with a total device footprint of 15.65×6.125 μm.

Abstract:A novel compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a silicon nitride-silica-silicon horizontal slot waveguide is numerically proposed, to the best of our knowledge. In the slot waveguide, the transverse electric (TE) mode propagates through the silicon layer, while the transverse magnetic (TM) mode is confined in the slot region. By utilizing an asymmetric directional coupler (DC) and bent directional coupler (bent DC) consisting of a slot waveguide and a thin silicon waveguide, PBSs with 14.6 μm (DC) and 5.2 μm (bent DC) coupling regions are obtained. Without cascading other structures, the DC PBS shows a low insertion loss (IL) of 0.4 (0.2) dB and high extinction ratio (ER) of 31.56 (24.61) dB for a TE (TM) port around 1.55 μm, while the IL and ER of the bent DC PBS are 0.4 (0.15) dB and 35.83 (21.74) dB, respectively. The proposed PBSs also have a good fabrication tolerance and broad bandwidth (>40 nm) for an ER of >20 dB.

Abstract:For the polarization multiplexing requirements in all-optical networks, this work presents a compact all-fiber polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and an elliptical gold layer. Numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) demonstrates that the mode modulation effect of the central gold layer effectively reduces the dimensions of the proposed PBS. By determining reasonable structural parameters of the proposed PCF, the coupling length ratio (CLR) between X- and Y-polarized super-modes can approach 2, achieving a minimal device length of 0.122 mm. The PBS exhibits a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of - 65 dB at 1.55 μm, with an operating bandwidth spanning 100 nm (1.5-1.6 μm) and a stable insertion loss (IL) of ~ 1.5 dB at 1.55 μm. Furthermore, the manufacture feasibility and performance verification scheme are also investigated. It is widely anticipated that the designed PBS will play a crucial role in the ongoing development process of miniaturization and integration of photonic devices.

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated numerically by utilizing the full vectorial mode-matching (FVMM) theory and the coupled mode theory (CMT), which are introduced in the aspects of the width of waveguide, the height of waveguide, the radius of microring, and coupling coefficient, etc. Simultaneously, the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method, a powerful and accurate method for finite size structure, is chosen to simulate and design this PBS. When TE and TM polarized light at 1.55 mu m are launched into the input port simultaneously, the resonator will drop TM polarized light to the drop port and transmit TE polarized light to the through port. In this way, two orthogonal polarization states are split and transferred to different output ports. The extinction ratio in the order of 10dB is achieved initially based on our recent work. The initial experimental results are also given, which includes three microring resonator with the radius of 15 mu m, 10 mu m, and 5 mu m, respectively. The proposed PBS structure could be utilized to develop ultracompact optical polarization modulating device for large-scale photonic integration and optical information processing.

Abstract:Due to different boundary continuity conditions, electromagnetic waves with transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric polarizations respond differently when they encounter dielectric interfaces. Based on this mechanism, we propose a self-collimating polarization beam splitter (PBS) constructed on a polarization-insensitive self-collimation photonic crystal. The splitting is realized on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), through which the two polarizations can be separated by 90 with low cross talk. Both polarizations are self-collimated to eliminate the diffraction loss during the propagation. Furthermore, the out-of-plane scattering loss is suppressed since the PBS is operated in the first band. The wavelength bandwidth of the MZI-based PBS reaches about 100 nm at 1550 nm. Finally, the influences of interfaces on the performance of the PBS are discussed. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
