Abstract:In this paper, the effect of microstructure on backwall echo attenuation and fluctuation are systematically studied for a variety of focal conditions. A fine-grained powered-Nickel block serves as a calibration standard, and a focused transducer is used. The dependence on focal condition of the backwall spectra in the calibration block is shown to be in good agreement with the predictions of a simple beam model. The deduced attenuation in well-behavior materials (fused quartz and rolled aluminum plate) is found to be relatively insensitive to the focusing conditions. A much greater sensitivity to the focusing condition is seen for a Ti-17 billet specimen, particular when the elongated macrograins are aligned parallel to the beam propagation direction. Results are compared with those of an earlier study that used flat-bottom-holes as reflectors.
