Abstract:A metallic glass (Nd0.625Ni0.375)85Al15 with ferromagnetism at low temperatures is presented in the following paper. The structure, thermal stability, and magnetic properties have been investigated. The result demonstrates that the amorphous alloy has a certain glass-forming ability and forms a kind of spin glass below its Curie temperature.

Abstract:Optical microscope, XRD analysis and tensile test were performed to study the influence of Ni element on the microstructure and mechanical behaviors of the magneto-shape-memory alloys Co-Ni. The experimental results show that the martensitic microstructure presents regular plates after homogenizing annealing, and the microstructure shows the lens-like morphology after hot rolling. The crystal structure of thermal martensite is determined to be hcp, with the lattice parameters being a=0.251 nm, c=0.407 nm. The crystal structure of the parent phase is determined to be fcc, with the lattice parameter being a = 0.355 nm. After the elastic deformation stage, the experimental alloys show continuous work hardening and have no obvious yield point elongation. σ0.2, E decreases and δ increases with the increase of the Ni content. The high deformation strengthening exponent of the parent phase proves that it has low stacking fault energy.
Recent Electron Microscopy Results on Micro- and Nanostructured Ni-Ti-(X) Shape Memory Alloys

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:In this study, three shape memory alloys, Mn 50 Ni 50-x Sn x ( x = 5, 7.5, and 10), were elaborated by melt spinning. The structure, microstructure, and magnetic properties of these alloys were carried out by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and physical property measurement system, respectively. The experimental results showed that the increase in Sn ratio caused a phase transformation. The structure of the martensite phase (for x = 5 and 7.5) was seen as a monoclinic 14 M structure, while the structure of the austenite phase (for x = 10) was observed as a cubic L2 1 structure. We revealed that the addition of Sn led to an almost linear decrease in martensitic transition temperatures, due to the decrease in valence electron ratio (e/a). We explored that for x = 10, the martensitic transition that occurs from the ferromagnetic austenite to weakly magnetic martensite was realized due to the strong magnetostructural coupling in this alloy. Also, it is found that there is a slight decrease in temperatures and a slight increase in the thermal hysteresis range, due to the increase in the magnetic field. While, for x = 7.5 and x = 5, they have the transitions at high temperatures above 400 and 550 K, respectively. This fact might limit these alloys in their applications. So, the present results indicate that the amount of Sn content in the MnNiSn alloys plays an important role to modify the structural and magnetic properties.

Abstract:This paper investigates the microstructure evolution in directionally solidified ferromagnetic shape memory Co37Ni34Al29 alloys by changing the solidification conditions and heat treatment process. From optical microscopy observations, the martensitic transformation temperature can be controlled by the composition of the matrix, and is especially dependent on the Al content. In addition, a preferred 〈110〉 orientation for the parent phase was obtained at the pulling rate of 25μm/s and a relatively large 130 ppm strain in the single martensite polycrystalline CoNiAl was induced by an external magnetic field up to 7kOe.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys exhibit martensite transformation (MT) and magnetic transition and thus may be actuated by thermal and magnetic fields. The working frequency of these alloys may be higher than conventional shape memory alloys, such as Ni-Ti, because the magnetic field may operate at higher frequency. This chapter focuses on some fundamental topics of these multifunctional materials, including the composition-structure relationship, the synthesis of the foams and microwires, the martensite transformation and magnetic transition characters, the properties (magneticfield-induced strain (MFIS), magnetocaloric effects (MCEs), shape memory effects, and superelastic effects), and applications. The improvement of the magnetic-field-induced strain due to the reduced constraint of twin boundary motion caused by grain boundaries in polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga foams and the size effects of the superelasticity and magnetocaloric properties in Ni-Mn-X (X = In, Sn, Sb) microwires are detailed and addressed.

Abstract:The present work proposed a rapid solidification process based on suction casting method to fabricate bulk Co–Ni–Al alloys. The main purpose is to seek a balance between functional characteristics (pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect) and mechanical properties (strength and ductility) in this system. The results revealed that two grain refinement transitions occurred in the quenched alloys with the variation of the cooling rate. Under the cooling rate of about 24–50K/s, rapidly solidified Co–Ni–Al alloys exhibited the divorced β+γ eutectic structure. It is confirmed by magnetic force microscopy observation that the γ phase surrounded by the β grains showed a strong stripe-like magnetic contrast whereas the intracrystalline β phase possessed weak magnetic anisotropy. The divorced eutectic structure weakened the hindrance of the γ phase to the reversible motion of martensitic variants of the matrix, and thus offered good shape memory recovery and pseudoelasticity. At the same time, the ductility was significantly improved owing to the presence of the γ phase distributed at the grain boundaries. It is believed that the rapidly solidified Co–Ni–Al alloys are promising smart materials for practical application.

Abstract:Magnetic shape memory alloys have received much attention due to their intriguing physical and multifunctional properties, including magnetostrain, magnetoresistance, elastocaloric effect (eCE), and shape memory effect (SME). In order to develop improved materials, it is necessary to study the effect of microstructure on the material properties in greater depth. In this work, Mn50Ni32Sn7Co11 bulk alloys were obtained by copper mold suction casting, directional solidification, and quenching with different cooling rates. The effects of cooling rate on the microstructure and the corresponding eCE/SME were investigated. It was found that the content of γ phase (fcc structure) increased and martensitic transformation temperature decreased with decrease in the cooling rate. The solidification process of γ phase and the matrix phase was determined by studying the solid-liquid interface. Mn–Ni–Sn–Co alloys with γ phase exhibited ductile fracture behavior and better mechanical properties. The adiabatic temperature change was −2.6 K upon unloading. Moreover, shape memory behavior of as-quenched specimen was investigated by in situ digital image correlation technique in non-oriented polycrystalline materials. It was found that heterogeneous strain distribution reduced the SME. Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy for designing magnetic shape memory alloys with better ductility and multi-functional properties.

Abstract:In the Co39Ni33Al28 alloy, the ferromagnetic shape memory effect was investigated. A martensitic transformation (MT) occurred in the Co39Ni33Al28 alloy when the temperature was lower than the martensitic start transformation temperature, MS=233K. The morphologies and microstructures of the martensitic phase characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed a new 28-layered (28M) modulated martensite consisting of pinstripes and co-existing with the non-modulated martensite. Anomalies in magnetic properties and strain emerging around the MT have been briefly discussed.

Abstract:The effect of partial substitution of Cu for Ga on the microstructure, martensitic transformation and mechanical properties of Ni50Mn30Ga20-xCux alloys was investigated by optical microscope (OM), different scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the Ni50Mn30Ga20-xCux alloys exhibit thermoelastic martensitic transformation. The martensitic transformation temperatures of the Ni50Mn30Ga20-xCux sample increase remarkably with increase of Cu content, while the martensite structure of these alloys changes from 7 M to non-modulated T martensite at room temperature. In addition, the compressive strength and fracture strain of alloys are clearly enhanced with increase of Cu content, which can be attributed to the strengthening of solution. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni56Fe17Ga27-xCox(x=0, 2, 4, 6) magnetic shape memory alloys have been studied, and the influence of Co addition on gamma phase and the mechanism for increasing toughness by gamma phase were revealed. The results show that the microstructure of as-melted alloys is composed of martensite phase and gamma phase at room temperature. With increasing Co content, the volume of gamma phase increases. For the martensite phase, the saturation solubility of Fe and Co atoms is fixed. If the total content of Fe and Co atoms exceeds 16 at %, the residual atoms will exist in the form of gamma phase, which is rich in Fe and Co atoms. Besides, the saturation solubility of Fe and Co atoms in gamma phase is around 23 at %. The tensile tests show that the yielding strength and fracture strength increase with increasing Co content. The fracture mechanism of martensite phase is transcrystalline fracture, and the gamma phase is gliding fracture, it proves that the gamma phase improves the toughness of experimental alloys.

Abstract:Magnetic shape memory CoNiGa alloys hold great promise as new smart materials due to the good ductility and a wide range of martensitic transformation (MT) temperatures as well as magnetic transition points. This paper reports the results of investigations on the equilibrium phase constitution and microstructure evolution in quenched or aged CoNiGa alloys using the optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The dendritic γ phase decreases as lowering of Ga content in studied two series of samples (Co50Ni50−xGax, x=0–50 and Co100−2yNiyGay, y=15–35). Some γ′ precipitates with different morphologies were found in given alloys conducted with water quenching (WQ) at 800°C or long-time ageing at 300°C. After 800°C quenching, the γ′ phase has a rod-like shape for the Co50Ni30Ga20 alloy but shows a Widmanstätten morphology as Ga increases to 25at%, and trends to be block structure in further high Ga content alloy. In the case of 300°C aged alloys, the γ′ particles prefer to nucleate in interior of γ phase or at the interface of β–γ. We also presented an illustrative vertical section phase diagram keeping 50at% Co, and isothermal section phase diagram at 1150 and 800°C of the CoNiGa system. Based on the schematic ternary phase diagram, the composition scope which potentially holds over the magnetic pure martensite phase structure at room temperature (RT) was pointed out. It is believed that this optimized range alloys would play an important role in the functional materials design for application.

Abstract:A series of Ni25Al−xFe (x = 20–40 at.%) intermetallic compounds were prepared for mechanical property measurements by means of hardness and tensile testing. The microstructural evolution of these alloys was examined by X-ray diffraction, high temperature differential calorimetry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that two phases, γ′ and β′, exist in the alloys with low iron content, and the microstructure changes from the mixture of γ′ and β′ phases to a nearly single β′ phase when the iron content reaches 40 at.%. An increasing iron content, which substitutes for nickel in this alloy, results in an increased melting point, hardness, yield stress and ultimate stress, but a decreased elongation.

Abstract:The martensitic transformation (MT) and magnetic properties have been investigated in a series of Ni50−x Fe x Mn32Al18 ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. The substitution of Fe for Ni reduces the MT temperature of Ni–Fe–Mn–Al alloys effectively, and the magnetization of the austenite was significantly enhanced in these high-doped alloys. The Fe introduction converts antiferromagnetic austenite to ferrimagnetic state, and therefore, the unique MT occurs between ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic state in these alloys. The MT temperatures decreased by about 15 K under the magnetic field of 30 kOe for x = 8 alloy. The positive value of magnetic entropy change was determined to 3.35 J/kg K around the MT in the field change of 30 kOe for x = 6 alloy. These results suggest that Ni50−x Fe x Mn32Al18 alloys would be the promising candidates for magnetic multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Influence of rare earth Y addition on the microstructure and phase transitions and mechanical properties of polycrystalline Ni50Mn29Ga21 ferromagnetic-shape memory alloy (FSMA) are investigated. It is shown that microstructure of the Ni-Mn-Ga-Y alloys consists of the matrix and the Y-rich phase. The Y-rich phase firstly disperses homogeneously in the matrix with small amounts and then tends to segregate at the grain boundaries with increasing Y substitution for Ga. The Y-rich phase is indexed to Y(Ni,Mn)(4)Ga phase with a hexagonal CaCu5 type structure. The structural transition from 5 M to 7 M, and then to non-modulated T martensite appears with the increase of Y content. The martensitic transformation temperature increases remarkably with increasing Y content, whereas the Curie temperature almost keeps unchanged. It is revealed that the appropriate addition of Y significantly enhances the yield strength and improves the ductility of the alloys. The mechanism on the influence of Y content on the improved mechanical properties and martensitic transformation temperature is also discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Improvement of Mechanical Property and Large Shape Recovery of Sintered Ni45Mn36.6In13.4Co5 Alloy

Abstract:High mechanical properties Ni45Mn36.6In13.4Co5 magnetic shape memory alloy with preferred orientation were prepared by spark plasma sintering melt-spinning ribbons piled up orderly. Sintered at 1073 K, the orientation of grains becomes random. Sintered at 873 K, part of the grains grows inhomogeneously and some of the columnar grains are fractured under relatively large compressive pressure. Mechanical properties of Ni-Mn-In-Co alloy are improved significantly by spark plasma sintering the ribbons. The compressive fracture strength and strain of the Ni45Mn36.6In13.4Co5 bulks sintered at 873 K are 1200 MPa and 14%, which are approximately two times larger than that of ingots as-cast. The improvement of mechanical property can be attributed to the textured microstructure and relatively tiny grains in sintering ingots. It must be mentioned that the alloys sintered at 873 K show almost perfect shape memory effect, about 95% compressive strains (as high as 11.4%) was recoverable during heating, and shape recovery is achieved in reverse martensitic transformation process, which predicts a relatively high magnetic field induced strain recovery in polycrystalline. Abstract:The data presented in this article is the supplementary data of Zhang et al. (2018) [1]. The Ni50Mn38Sb9Si3 alloy is annealed at 1223 K for 24 h and then quenched into ice water; while the Ni50Mn38Sb9.5Si2.5 alloy is annealed at 1173 K for 24 h and then quenched into ice water. The microstructure of the Ni50Mn38Sb9Si3 alloy indicates that a higher heat treatment temperature cannot prevent the formation of secondary phases. Furthermore, the composition of α phase is similar to the nominal composition of the alloy. On the other hand, the nominal concentration of Si atoms and heat-treatment temperature do not affect the compositions of the β and γ phases. For example, the compositions of the β and γ phases in the Ni50Mn38Sb9Si3 alloy are similar when annealed at 1223 K for 24 h and 1173 K for 24 h.

Abstract:Microstructure and crystal orientation of Ni52Fe17Ga27Co4 alloys during directional solidification under various conditions was investigated by zone melting liquid metal cooling (ZMLMC) method. At high temperature gradient and low growth velocity, the well-developed preferred orientation for coarse columnar crystals was identified to be (222) planes of L1(0) martensite. More significantly, a giant martensitic single-variant set was evident in the oriented columnar crystal. Two types of micro-twinning substructure within the martensitic lamellae, which are induced by high internal stress, were also analyzed. Abstract:Microstructure and magnetic properties were investigated in Mn50+xNi25Ga25-x ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. Some Mn-rich precipitates were observed in polycrystalline samples after being annealed at 1073 K for 24 h, and 1123 K for 24 h is required for a single martensitic phase. Abstract:The microstructure of a CoNiAl FSMA was determined by conventional transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction studies together with advanced microscopy techniques and in-situ Lorentz microscopy. 10 to 60 nm sized rod-like precipitates of hcp $\epsilon$-Co were confirmed to be present by HRTEM. The orientation relationship between the precipitates and B2 matrix is described by the Burgers orientation relationship. The crystal structure of the martensite obtained after cooling is tetragonal L10 with a (1-11) twinning plane. The magnetic domain structure was determined during an in-situ cooling experiment using the Fresnel mode of Lorentz microscopy. While transformation proceeds from B2 austenite to L10 martensite, new domains are nucleated leading to a decrease in domain width, with the magnetization lying predominantly along a single direction. It was possible to completely describe the relationship between magnetic domains and crystallographic directions in the austenite phase though complications existed for the martensite phase.
