Abstract:The electrochemical properties of alpha-MoO3 nanorods, which were synthesized via a solution-based method and following calcination, have been reported as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries. Detailed lithium-insertion process of the material has been conducted by means of cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic method, and impedance technique, and superior features associated with the nanostructures have been observed. The alpha-MoO3 nanorods exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 271.8 mAh/g under a current density of 0.1 mA/cm2 in the range 1.0 approximately 3.0 V, which nearly approached the theoretical capacity 280 mAh/g. Comparison of the structural and electrochemical characteristics with those of bulk alpha-MoO3 suggests the enhanced electrochemical performance might be related to the rodlike structure and increased edge and corner effects.

Abstract:Metal oxides hold the promise of high-capacity anodes for Li-ion batteries. Lithiation of binary metal oxides proceeds with two typical mechanisms: insertion and conversion. We characterize the two-step lithiation behavior of α-MoO3, namely, Li intercalation in the layered α-MoO3 leads to the formation of crystalline Li2MoO3 in the early stage of lithiation, and further Li insertion coverts LixMoO3 to metallic Mo and amorphous Li2O. The intercalation process is thermodynamically more favorable and is accompanied with a minor volumetric change, while the conversion reaction is kinetically slow and induces large deformation. Furthermore, instead of showing significant Li-embrittlement as seen in typical oxides, α-MoO3 remains defects free despite the nearly 100% repetitive volumetric change during lithiation cycles. The reaction mechanism, structural evolution, and mechanical behaviors are unveiled through coordinated in-situ transmission electron microcopy experiments on α-MoO3 nanobelts and first-principles computational studies. The results provide fundamental perspectives in the course of developing reliable high-capacity electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Uniform α-MoO3 nanobelts were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal process at 180°C for 20 h of the acidic solutions with different pH values of 0–0.75, adjusted using HCl (conc.). XRD and SEM results revealed that the pH of the precursor solutions played an important role in the phase, impurities, and morphology of the products. At the pH=0, the perfect α-MoO3 nanobelts with a few tens of microns long were synthesized. By the TEM characterization, orthorhombic MoO3 has a distinctive layered structure along the [010] direction, consisting of distorted MoO6 octahedrons connected by common corners along the [100] direction and common edges along the [001] direction. The electrochemical measurement showed that the α-MoO3 nanobelts have high specific charge capacity.

Abstract:alpha-MoO3-In2O3 core-shell nanorods were prepared by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. As the anode of lithium-ion batteries, their reversible capacity was up to 1304 mA h g(-1) at 0.2 C rate ( 5 hours per half cycle) and maintains 1114 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles. At a rate of 0.3 C, 0.5 C, 1 C and 2 C, the discharge capacities after 50 cycles were maintained at 938, 791, 599 and 443 mA h g(-1), respectively. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between alpha-MoO3 and In2O3, one-dimensional core-shell nanostructures, short paths for lithium diffusion and interface spaces.

Abstract:Flexible single crystalline alpha-MoO3 nanobelts with widths of 200-500 nm, lengths of 5-10 mu m, and thicknesses of similar to 50 nm have been prepared by a facile hydrothermal treatment method. When fabricated as the cathode for lithium ion batteries, the as-synthesized alpha-MoO3 nanobelts exhibit excellent rate capability, large capacity, and good cycling stability. An initial discharge capacity of 176 mAh/g can be obtained at 5000 mA/g, retaining a capacity of 115 mAh/g after 50 cycles. The superior high-rate capability can be attributed to the increased conductivity of the electrode during cycling and the nanobelts morphology. The excellent performance makes the alpha-MoO3 nanobelts a promising cathode material for rechargeable lithium ion batteries in the application of electronic vehicles and hybrid electronic vehicles.

Abstract:Uniform α-MoO3 nanorods are synthesized with controlled aspect ratios through a fast hydrothermal route. The control over the aspect ratio of these as-prepared nanorods is realized by applying different reaction times of 2−20 h. Specifically, the nanorods prepared with a reaction time of 2 h are, on average, much shorter in length and slightly smaller in width compared with those obtained with a longer reaction time of 20 h. The products are thoroughly characterized by FESEM/TEM/XRD/BET techniques. The electrochemical properties of the samples are analyzed using cyclic voltammetry and charge−discharge cycling. These studies reveal that the as-prepared nanorods with a smaller aspect ratio exhibit a higher initial discharge capacity, a lower irreversible loss, and better rate behavior at different charge−discharge rates. Abstract:Hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorods were fabricated via a facile and controllable approach using MOFs (Fe-MIL-88A) as both precursors and sacrificial templates. It has been found that Fe(OH)(3), which is formed on the surface of MOFs after treatment with NaOH solution, plays a significant role in maintaining its morphology during calcination. The interior of well-defined hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorod structures is assembled by interconnected nanoparticles to form a porous structure. As anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorods exhibit long-term cycling stability (1219 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) and ultrahigh rate capability. The high electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique structure and morphology of the hollow porous nanorods.

Abstract:α-MoO3 nanobelts were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammogram (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge testing techniques were employed to evaluate electrochemical behaviors of α-MoO3 materials. Results showed that α-MoO3 nanobelts with about 80 nm in diameter and 5–12 μm in length were grown in the orthorhombic system. Electrochemical characterisation confirmed that in lithium ion insertion/extraction process, the first intercalation of lithium ion in α-MoO3 at about 2.8 V was irreversible, corresponding to Li x MoO3 (0 < x ≤ 0.25) and the parent MoO3 materials coexisting, the second lithium ion inter-calation was reversible at the potential range of 2.2–2.4 V followed by Li x MoO3 (0.25 < x ≤ 0.5), and below 1.0 V the mechanism of lithium ion storage changed from lithium ion intercalation reaction into lithium alloying reaction. The α-MoO3 nanobelts showed better electrochemical performance, 319 mA h g−1 initial discharge capacity, around 52% capacity retention after 20 cycles than that of α-MoO3 bulk.

Abstract:A facile one-pot hydrothermal method has been developed for the preparation of carbon-coated MoO2 nanocrystals. The annealed MoO2-C nanocomposite consists of interconnected MoO2@C nanocrystals. When evaluated for lithium storage capabilities, these MoO2@C nanocrystals exhibit high specific capacities (similar to 640 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) and similar to 57.5 mA h g(-1) at 400 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. In view of the excellent lithium storage properties and the ease in large-scale preparation, the as-synthesized MoO2-C nanocomposite might be used as promising anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:alpha-MoO3@MnO2 core-shell nanorods are synthesized via a facile two-step method. The electrochemical measurement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) shows that prepared alpha-MoO3@MnO2 core-shell nanorods as the anode exhibit high discharge capacity, high rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. The reversible capacity of alpha-MoO3@MnO2 core-shell nanorods is 1475 mAh/g at 0.1 C rate (10 hours per charging cycle) and retains at 1127 mAh/g after 50 cycles, much higher than that of pure alpha-MoO3 and MnO2. Even at high current rate of 6 C, the reversible capacity of alpha-MoO3@MnO2 core-shell nanorods is 394 mAh/g and retains at 286 mAh/g after 50 cycles. Our results indicate that alpha-MoO3@MnO2 core-shell nanocomposites have enormous potential for application in lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In our pursuit of high-performance lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes, we developed a hybrid electrospun membrane consisting of MoO 3 nanorods (MoO 3 NRs) integrated with carbon nanofibers (CNFs), termed MoO 3 @CNFs. Serving as an anode, this membrane boasts several advantages. Firstly, it capitalizes on the novel structure of MoO 3 @CNFs, enabling rapid ion/electron transport pathways. Secondly, due to the carbon skeleton, MoO 3 is protected from coming into direct contact with the electrolyte. Thirdly, the consistent internal structure of MoO 3 @CNFs enhances conductivity. Experimental findings reveal that the anode with a relatively low MoO 3 content, specifically 33%MoO 3 @CNFs (comprising 33%MoO 3 NRs), achieves a reversible specific capacity of 657 mAh g −1 after 140 cycles at a low current density of 0.2 A g −1 , demonstrating superior high-rate electrochemical kinetics and extended cycling life. Kinetic analysis indicates contributions from surface capacitance processes and diffusion-controlled insertion. Our approach not only facilitates the acquisition of various one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure composites but also propels novel research in ultrafast rechargeable lithium-ion battery electrode materials.

Abstract:A rationally assembled three-dimensional graphene framework coupled with interconnected molybdenum/tungsten oxide nanosheets (MoO3/WO3-GF) has been developed via a one-step template-free strategy. With the unique nanostructure, the obtained anode material not only exhibits a high reversible capacity of about 1000 mA h g-1, approaching the theoretical capacity of MoO3 and WO3 materials, but also shows excellent rate capability and cycling performance with negligible capacity attenuation after a long-time test. These features make it a promising candidate material for high-performance commercial lithium-ion batteries in the future.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) AMoO(4)center dot nH(2)O (A = Ni, Co) nanorods have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The effect of different synthetic conditions on the morphologies of the Final products was systematically investigated. The size of the nanorods can be easily controlled by adding ethanol in the synthetic solution. For the first time, the self-assembled growth of oriented NiMoO4 center dot nH(2)O nanorod arrays on Ti-foil substrates was achieved. The thermal dehydration and phase transformation processes of AMoO(4)center dot nH(2)O nanorods were thoroughly investigated by TG-DTA and time-resolved synchrotron XRD. As-prepared hydrate nanorods can be further converted to corresponding AMoO(4) nanorods by annealing at 300-600 degrees C for 1 h without significant alteration of 1 D morphology. Electrochemical lithinum storage capabilities of dehydrated AMoO(4) nanorods have been investigated. The results Suggest their potential use as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:In this work, single-crystalline alpha-FeOOH nanorods with a length of 400-700 nm and a diameter of 20-80 nm were successfully synthesized via a facile template-free hydrothermal method. Single-crystalline mesoporous alpha-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanorods could be obtained from these a-FeOOH precursors after calcining at 350 degrees C in air and 500 degrees C in nitrogen, respectively. The as-prepared single-crystalline mesoporous alpha-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanorods exhibited a large specific surface area and porosity, effectively enhancing the electrochemical reaction area and accommodate the strain during the charge-discharge cycling process.

Abstract:Constructing 3D hierarchical architecture consisting of 2D hybrid nanosheets is very critical to achieve uppermost and stable electrochemical performance for both lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a simple synthesis of uniform 3D microspheres assembled from carbon nanosheets with the incorporated MoO 2 nanoclusters is demonstrated. The MoO 2 nanoclusters can be readily converted into the molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) nanocrystals by using high temperature treatment. Such assembling architecture is highly particular for preventing Mo‐based ultrasmall nanoparticles from coalescing or oxidizing and endowing them with rapid electron transfer. Consequently, the MoO 2 /C hybrids as LIB anode materials deliver a specific capacity of 625 mA h g −1 at 1600 mA g −1 even after 1000 cycles, which is among the best reported values for MoO 2 ‐based electrode materials. Moreover, the Mo 2 C/C hybrids also exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with small overpotential and robust durability in both acid and alkaline media. The present work highlights the importance of designing 3D structure and controlling ultrasmall Mo‐based nanoparticles for enhancing electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.
