Abstract:A liquid core waveguide as a refractometer is proposed. Microtunnels were created in standard optical fiber using tightly focused femtoscond laser inscription and chemical etching. A 1.2(h)x125(d) x500(l) mum micro-slot engraved along a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was used to construct liquid core waveguide by filling the slot with index matching oils. The device was used to measure refractive index and sensitivity up to 10- 6/pm was obtained.

Abstract:We fabricate fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in microfibers (MFs) using focused ion beam milling technique. By periodically etching 100 nm-depth grooves on the surface of silica MFs with diameters less than 2 μm, evident grating features with transmission dip up to 15 dB are obtained. Because of the high-index contrast of the gratings structure, the length of the microfiber Bragg grating (MFBG) can be reduced to 500 μm level. Using a 518 μm-length 1.8 μm-diameter MFBG, we also demonstrate sensitivity up to 660 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) for refractive index (RI) sensing. The highly compact MFBGs demonstrated here may serve as low-dimensional building blocks for miniaturized photonic components and devices.

Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:We present a fiber-optic sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) whose core has an offset to that of the lead-in fiber from splicing for simultaneous refractive index (RI) and temperature measurement. Due to the core offset, the core mode in the lead-in fiber is coupled to both the core mode and the cladding modes of the sensing fiber with the FBG. Then the two oppositely propagating code modes, the cladding modes, and the core modes are coupled by the FBG at particular wavelengths determined by the effective indices of the modes and the FBG structure, resulting in two peaks in the FBG reflection spectrum. The peak wavelength corresponding to the core-cladding mode coupling is sensitive to both RI and temperature, while the peak wavelength corresponding to the core-core mode coupling is only sensitive to temperature. Utilizing the difference of two reflection peaks of these coupling modes, both RI and temperature can be detected simultaneously. We fabricate and characterize a sensor. The preliminary experimental results show that it can detect the refractive index in a range of 1.33 to 1.4421, with a temperature sensitivity of 10 pm/degrees C. (C) The Authors. Abstract:In this work, a microchanneled chirped fiber Bragg grating (MCFBG) is proposed and fabricated through the femtosecond laser-assisted chemical etching. The microchannel ( $\sim$550 $\mu$ m) gives access to the external index liquid, thus inducing refractive index (RI) sensitivity to the structure. In the experiment, the transmission bands induced by the reduced effective index in the microchannel region were used to sense the surrounding RI and temperature changes. The experimental results show good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The proposed MCFBG offers enhanced RI sensitivity without degrading the robustness of the device showing good application potential as bio-chemical sensors.

Abstract:We combine fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology with a wet chemical etch-erosion procedure and demonstrate two types of refractive index sensors using single-mode optical fibers. The first index sensor device is an etch-eroded single FBG with a radius of 3μm, which is used to measure the indices of four different liquids. The second index sensor device is an etch-eroded fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FFPI) with a radius of ∼1.5μm and is used to measure the refractive indices of isopropyl alcohol solutions of different concentrations. Due to its narrower resonance spectral feature, the FFPI sensor has a higher sensitivity than the FBG sensor and can detect an index variation of 1.4×10−5. Since we can measure the reflection signal, these two types of sensors can be fabricated at the end of a fiber and used as point sensors.

Abstract:In order to measure depth of liquid with high refractive index which is greater than that of the fiber cladding, a power-type liquid-level sensor based on reflective long-period fiber grating (RLPFG) is designed and implemented. A mode-transition model for RLPFG between guided mode and leaky mode is established, and spectral and power characteristics under different liquid level are theoretically analyzed. For the liquid level measurement of glycerol, a sensing sensitivity of 0.772 dB/mm is obtained, and its linear correlation coefficient is 0.9959. Then the influence of temperature on the sensor is analyzed. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results acquired by the above model. Compared with the phase method and the transmission power method, this method is simpler and more practical through detecting the reflected power. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A refractive index sensor based on the thinned and microstructure fiber Bragg grating (ThMs-FBG) was proposed and realized as a chemical sensing. The numerical simulation for the reflectance spectrum of the ThMs-FBG was calculated and the phase shift down-peak could be observed from the reflectance spectrum. Many factors influencing the reflectance spectrum were considered in detail for simulation, including the etched depth, length, and position. The sandwich-solution etching method was utilized to realize the microstructure of the ThMs-FBG, and the photographs of the microstructure were obtained. Experimental results demonstrated that the reflectance spectrum, phase shift down-peak wavelength, and reflected optical intensity of the ThMs-FBG all depended on the surrounding refractive index. However, only the down-peak wavelength of the ThMs-FBG changed with the surrounding temperature. Under the condition that the length and cladding diameter of the ThMs-FBG microstructure were 800 and 14 mum, respectively, and the position of the microstructure of the ThMs-FBG is in the middle of grating region, the refractive index sensitivity of the ThMs-FBG was 0.79 nm/refractive index unit with the wide range of 1.33-1.457 and a high resolution of 1.2 x 10(-3). The temperature sensitivity was 0.0103 nm/ degrees C, which was approximately equal to that of common FBG.

Abstract:A refractive index (RI) sensor based on micro-nano fiber (MN-fiber) with chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) Fabry–Perot cavity (FP-cavity) for a microfluidic chip has been proposed. A single-mode fiber is drawn by hydrogen flame heading come into MN-fiber. Two CFBGs are written into this MN-fiber by the ultraviolet (UV) laser mask exposure method. One is at the tapered region, another is at the micro-nano region. Then a micro-nano fiber with chirped fiber Bragg grating (MN-CFBGs) FP-cavity sensor is formed. The Bragg reflection wavelengths of two CFBGs are 1620 nm, 3-dB bandwidth are above 50 nm. The reflectance of two CFBGs are 70% and 99%, respectively. The effects of reflectivity and bandwidth of the CFBGs FP-cavity, diameter and length of MN-fiber with this sensor’s optical properties are analysed is and discussed. This sensor is embedded in a microfluidic chip and the MN-fiber region is immersion microfluid in different channels. The experimental results show that refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is –986 nm/refractive index unit (RIU), and the signal of the sensor has little noise. The CFBG-FP sensor not only has high sensitivity and lager measurement range, but also high contrast resonance signal and stability.

Abstract:A compact microfluidic refractive index sensor fabricated by drilling hole in the middle section of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is reported herein. The laser-drilled hole provides a microfluidic channel for the aqueous sample to pass through while at the same time permits coupling of the interrogating light to detect the target analyte. The reported sensor takes advantage of the fact that a small phase shift in the central region of the grating will result in a very sharp peak in the FBG stop-band. The phase shift can be related to a range of possible perturbations inside the microfluidic channel, including passage of cells, beads and a shift in the concentration of certain fluidic component. The amount of wavelength shift of the peak in the FBG stop-band represents the change in the refractive index inside the microfluidic channel. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. The reported microfluidic phase shift FGB sensor could be a good candidate for portable flow cytometry applications.

Abstract:Liquid refractive index sensor with three-cascaded microchannels in single-mode fiber was fabricated by femtosecond laser-induced water breakdown. When the liquid is filled in three microchannels across the fiber core, the transmission spectrum of the sensor shows interference peaks. The refractive index of liquid can be sensed accurately based on both the wavelength shift and loss change of interference peaks. The refractive index sensitivities of wavelength shift and loss change reach to as high as −2,406.1 nm/RIU and −156.8 dB/RIU, respectively. The sensor is insensitive to the refractive index change of liquid caused by environmental temperature. It can be used for liquid refractive index sensing with high sensitivity, especially for water pollution monitoring.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating based refractometers have attracted great attention for various applications, but they usually suffer from the cross sensitivity to temperature in practice. Here, we demonstrate a temperature-insensitive refractive index sensor based on a short-line long-period fiber grating (SL-LPFG). It is fabricated by using femtosecond laser to periodically inscribe short lines in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) with a small duty cycle of 0.3, and resonates to a cladding mode with a high diffraction order. This high-order-resonance SL-LPFG responds to ambient refractive index with the sensitivities of 175.84 nm/RIU and 367.63 nm/RIU in the ranges of 1.3381 to 1.3763 and 1.3763 to 1.4008, respectively. Meanwhile, it presents a temperature sensitivity as low as 4.0 pm/°C, which is almost one percent of the temperature sensitivity of the similar period LPFG fabricated by UV exposure method. It's significant for LPFG-based refractometers in normal SMFs to minimize thermal interference without the assistance of an additional sensing unit and matrix interrogation. Therefore, the proposed high-order-resonance SL-LPFG provides a high-performance and low-cost solution for refractive index related applications, especially in medical, chemical, and biological fields.

Abstract:A compact RI sensor with a high sensitivity based on LPFG is designed and experimentally confirmed. The proposed sensor is realized by splicing different fibers, which gives it stable mechanical performance. The simulation results indicate that, at short lengths, a high sensitivity is achieved by optimizing the strength of the evanescent field. Consistent with the simulation results, the sensor demonstrated a high RI sensitivity (>600 nm/RIU in 1.42) and a compact size (about 2.7 mm) in the experiment. The temperature response of the sensor is 19 pm/°C at the range of 26– C. The compact size and high RI sensitivity give this LPFG a competitive advantage in various refractive index measurement engineering applications.

Abstract:Fiber optic sensors based on the Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer have been widely used because of its simple structure,small size,and high sensitivity.The refractive index of liquid can be measured by the open F-P interferometer.We can make an open F-P interferometer through mechanical cutting,femtosecond laser breakdown and some other methods.An open F-P interferometer sensor is fabricated with an open hollow capillary and two segments of single-mode fibers welded together by glass flux.Absolute measurement of refractive index of liquid can be achieved when the cross-correlation signal processing technology is used.Refractive index measurement experiments are performed for NaCl solutions with different concentrations.The measurement resolution for refractive index can reach 10-5 RIU magnitude,and the temperature sensitivity of the sensor is 39.59 nm/℃.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel refractometer based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) is proposed and experimentally investigated. The MZI is composed of 2 micro bending cores (MBCs), one of which excites the cladding modes and the other couples the modes back. This structure is formed by high-frequency CO2 laser polishing and oxyhydrogen flame heating. With the unique deformation method, the interaction between the fiber core and the external status gets enhanced, moreover, higher modes in the cladding are excited, which leads to a high refractive index (RI) sensitivity. Due to the high temperature of the oxyhydrogen flame, the core of CO2 polished fiber is modulated, furthermore, the cladding shape of MBC tends to be circular. Hence, relatively small modulating regions of 500 μm can form for interference. In the experiment, 2 transmission dips are chosen for RI measuring, which possesses the wavelength of 1530.4 nm and 1600.8 nm, respectively. The RI sensitivities of the 2 transmission dips are -271.7 nm/RIU and -333.8 nm/RIU with the RI range of 1.33-1.42. The temperature characteristic is also experimentally analyzed and the temperature sensitivities of which are 0.121 nm/℃ and 0.171 nm/℃ in the range of 34℃-154℃. By solving the matrix equation, the proposed sensor can be applied for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present a high‐sensitivity refractive‐index sensor based on etched thin‐core fiber (TCF) modal interferometer. The sensor structure is formed by splicing a TCF between two single‐mode fibers. To enhance the sensitivity, the thickness of the cladding of sensing region is reduced by hydrofluoric etching. The sensors with different diameters are investigated, and the maximum sensitivity of this new structure is 512nm/R.I.U with fiber diameters of 60 um, which is 4 times higher than that of the basic structure without etching. Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder (MZ) micro-cavity with two symmetric openings in single mode fibre (SMF) was fabricated by femtosecond laser-induced water breakdown. The micro-cavity is rightly across half of the fibre core, and the opening size of the micro-cavity is 10 mu m x 100 mu m. The micro-cavity and the remaining half of the fibre core constitute two arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The MZI with micro-cavity immerged in water shows perfect interference spectrum due to the regular shape and smooth internal surface of the micro-cavity. The insertion loss is only -8 dB and the contrast of one MZI peak reaches more than 40 dB. The MZI with micro-cavity in SMF can be used as an ultrasensitive liquid refractometer as its ultrahigh refractive index (RI) sensitivity (14296.98 nm/RIU), high RI resolution (1 x 10(-5) RIU), good linearity (99.62%) and low temperature crosstalk (0.04 nm/degrees C).

Abstract:A microstructured optical fiber (MOF) Bragg grating is presented for microfluidic sensing applications. The MOF is specially designed to be with a large amount of microholes for developing ultrasensitive sensors based on inner coating and surface effects. With the fabrication of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), such an MOF sensor has been demonstrated for monitoring the fluid flowing through microholes. Experimental results reveal that the sensitivity of the sensor depends on both the refractive-index range of measurement and the order of fiber modes.
