Abstract:Aimed at the problem of whether existing relational database management system(RDBMS) based applications can be integrated to semantic layer or not, the completeness of relation query to semantic query transforming was researched. Based on an Ontology auto learning approach from relational databases, several functions were abstracted to reflect the mappings between relation tables and Ontology classes, as well as relation attributes and Ontology properties. The basic SPARQL algebra expression for relation was established with those mapping functions. Then SPARQL algebras were used to simulate the five basic relational algebra operations: selection, projection, union, difference and Cartesian product, and five corresponding algorithms were proposed. The result showed that the SPARQL algebras can express the five basic relational algebras or the more complex relational algebra expressions composed by them under that ontology learning approach, so the SPARQL is relational completeness, and supports the system migration to semantic layer.

This is a useful and practical skill, but it gives limited insight into how queries are processed by relational database engines. In contrast, relational algebra is a commonly used internal representation of queries by database engines, but can be challenging for students to grasp. We developed a tool we call Relational Playground for database students to explore the connection between relational algebra and SQL.

Abstract:SQL query is a difficult topic for many students in undergraduate database courses. As instructors, we often face such student questions as how to approach or where to start on writing SQL queries. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to the problem. Our method adopts the divide-and-conquer paradigm, a familiar problem-solving skill to computer science students. It analyzes a given query requirement and looks for clues to decompose the requirement into actionable steps. Templates are also used to construct commonly used complex query types. Our experience of teaching this method has shown that it is effective in helping students learn SQL.

Abstract:A range of data insight analytical tasks involves analyzing a large set of tables of different schemas, possibly induced by various groupings, to find salient patterns. This paper presents Multi-Relational Algebra, an extension of the classic Relational Algebra, to facilitate such transformations and their compositions. Multi-Relational Algebra has two main characteristics: (1) Information Unit. The information unit is a slice $(r, X)$, where $r$ is a (region) tuple, and $X$ is a (feature) table. Specifically, a slice can encompass multiple columns, which surpasses the information unit of "a single tuple" or "a group of tuples of one column" in the classic relational algebra, (2) Schema Flexibility. Slices can have varying schemas, not constrained to a single schema. This flexibility further expands the expressive power of the algebra. Through various examples, we show that multi-relational algebra can effortlessly express many complex analytic problems, some of which are beyond the scope of traditional relational analytics. We have implemented and deployed a service for multi-relational analytics. Due to a unified logical design, we are able to conduct systematic optimization for a variety of seemingly different tasks. Our service has garnered interest from numerous internal teams who have developed data-insight applications using it, and serves millions of operators daily.

Abstract:Relational algebra is the theoretical basis of database design and queries. This paper extends our efforts on fuzzy relational algebraic operations under the so-called extended possibility-based data representation framework. With a more general setting of the division operator (/spl divide/'), a complete set of fuzzy algebraic operators {/spl cup/, /spl times/, -, /spl sigma/, /spl Pi/} is obtained, which can be proven and used to formulate other operators such as /spl cap/, /spl divide/', and others. Like in the classical database model, this is important and desirable for designing fuzzy query languages.

Abstract:From algebraic geometry perspective database relations are succinctly defined as Finite Varieties. After establishing basic framework, we give analytic proof of Heath theorem from Database Dependency theory. Next, we leverage Algebra/Geometry dictionary and focus on algebraic counterparts of finite varieties, polynomial ideals. It is well known that intersection and sum of ideals are lattice operations. We generalize this fact to ideals from different rings, therefore establishing that algebra of ideals is Relational Lattice. The final stop is casting the framework into Linear Algebra, and traversing to Quantum Theory.

Abstract:Proving the equivalence between SQL queries is a fundamental problem in database research. Existing solvers model queries using algebraic representations and convert such representations into first-order logic formulas so that query equivalence can be verified by solving a satisfiability problem. The main challenge lies in "unbounded summations", which appear commonly in a query's algebraic representation in order to model common SQL features, such as projection and aggregate functions. Unfortunately, existing solvers handle unbounded summations in an ad-hoc manner based on heuristics or syntax comparison, which severely limits the set of queries that can be supported. This paper develops a new SQL equivalence prover called SQLSolver, which can handle unbounded summations in a principled way. Our key insight is to use the theory of LIA^*, which extends linear integer arithmetic formulas with unbounded sums and provides algorithms to translate a LIA^* formula to a LIA formula that can be decided using existing SMT solvers. We augment the basic LIA^* theory to handle several complex scenarios (such as nested unbounded summations) that arise from modeling real-world queries. We evaluate SQLSolver with 359 equivalent query pairs derived from the SQL rewrite rules in Calcite and Spark SQL. SQLSolver successfully proves 346 pairs of them, which significantly outperforms existing provers.

Abstract:We present dxo, a relational system for algebra and differentiation, written in miniKanren. dxo operates over math expressions, represented as s-expressions. dxo supports addition, multiplication, exponentiation, variables (represented as tagged symbols), and natural numbers (represented as little-endian binary lists). We show the full code for dxo, and describe in detail the four main relations that compose dxo. We present example problems dxo can solve by combining the main relations. Our differentiation relation, do, can differentiate polynomials, and by running backwards, can also integrate. Similarly, our simplification relation, simpo, can simplify expressions that include addition, multiplication, exponentiation, variables, and natural numbers, and by running backwards, can complicate any expression in simplified form. Our evaluation relation, evalo, takes the same types of expressions as simpo, along with an environment associating variables with natural numbers. By evaluating the expression with respect to the environment, evalo can produce a natural number; by running backwards, evalo can generate expressions (or the associated environments) that evaluate to a given value. reordero also takes the same types of expressions as simpo, and relates reordered expressions.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing need for integrating legacy relational databases with semantic web ontologies, however, experience in building such applications has revealed a gap between semantic web languages and relational data model. We present a formal mapping system to bridge the gap and study the problem of reasoning and query answering using view underlying the mapping system. Particularly, we consider a special mapping called “constraint mapping” between database integrity constraints and OWL axioms. We then propose an approach to incorporating these OWL axioms and description logic reasoning into query rewriting using views to enable the algorithm to answer more types of queries. The approach has been used to develop a pilot data integration application for neuroscience community.

Abstract:The position we advocate in this paper is that relational algebra can provide a unified language for both representing and computing with statistical-relational objects, much as linear algebra does for traditional single-table machine learning. Relational algebra is implemented in the Structured Query Language (SQL), which is the basis of relational database management systems. To support our position, we have developed the FACTORBASE system, which uses SQL as a high-level scripting language for statistical-relational learning of a graphical model structure. The design philosophy of FACTORBASE is to manage statistical models as first-class citizens inside a database. Our implementation shows how our SQL constructs in FACTORBASE facilitate fast, modular, and reliable program development. Empirical evidence from six benchmark databases indicates that leveraging database system capabilities achieves scalable model structure learning.

Abstract:Structured Query Language (SQL) remains the standard language used in Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) and has found applications in healthcare (patient registries), businesses (inventories, trend analysis), military, education, etc. Although SQL statements are English-like, the process of writing SQL queries is often problematic for nontechnical end-users in the industry. Similarly, formulating and comprehending written queries can be confusing, especially for undergraduate students. One of the pivotal reasons given for these difficulties lies with the simple syntax of SQL, which is often misleading and hard to understand. An ideal solution is to present these two audiences: undergraduate students and nontechnical end-users with learning and practice tools. These tools are mostly electronic and can be used to aid their understanding, as well as enable them to write correct SQL queries. This work proposes a new approach aimed at understanding and writing correct SQL queries using principles from Formal Language and Automata Theory. We present algorithms based on: regular expressions for the recognition of simple query constructs, context-free grammars for the recognition of nested queries, and a jumping finite automaton for the synthesis of SQL queries from natural language descriptions. As proof of concept, these algorithms were further implemented into interactive software tools aimed at improving SQL comprehension. Evaluation of these tools showed that the majority of participants agreed that the tools were intuitive and aided their understanding of SQL queries. These tools should, therefore, find applications in aiding SQL comprehension at higher learning institutions and assist in the writing of correct queries in data-centered industries.

Abstract:How to handle division in systems that compute with logical formulas involving what would otherwise be polynomial constraints over the real numbers is a surprisingly difficult question. This paper argues that existing approaches from both the computer algebra and computational logic communities are unsatisfactory for systems that consider the satisfiability of formulas with quantifiers or that perform quantifier elimination. To address this, we propose the notion of the fair-satisfiability of a formula, use it to characterize formulas with divisions that are well-defined, meaning that they adequately guard divisions against division by zero, and provide a translation algorithm that converts a formula with divisions into a purely polynomial formula that is satisfiable if and only if the original formula is fair-satisfiable. This provides a semantics for division with some nice properties, which we describe and prove in the paper.
