Abstract:In this paper, the effects of operating applied voltage modes on the corona discharge morphology and NO removal characteristics from air stream are experimentally investigated. By applying a DC superimposed high frequency AC voltage, a uniform streamer corona can be generated, which is also less sensitive to electrodes mis-arrangements. Hermstein glow can be transferred to streamer by applying a DC superimposed AC power supply if the peak to peak voltage is larger than 1.0 kV at the voltage change rate of 0.2 kV//spl mu/s. A significant amount of NO removal is observed under streamer corona. While for Hermstein glow the removal is negligible.

Abstract:For nozzle-to-plate electrodes with a gap distance of 43mm, onset streamer occurs with a length of about 1.0-1.5cm when the applied voltage is increased to above the onset voltage Vc. Depending on gaseous compositions, onset streamer may become full streamer to cross the electrodes gap or transfer to the Hermstein glow with increasing the applied voltage. After streamer (peak current_??_60mA) bridging the gap, a long duration Townsend like glow discharge may be also formed, which may lead the spark breakdown. Bridging electrodes gap by streamer does not necessarily lead to spark breakdown. However, spark breakdown occurs only after streamer bridging the gap and a streamer channel, or Townsend like glow discharge, is formed between the nozzle and the plate. Moreover, spark breakdown occurs after a significant increase of the repetition rate of the self-sustained streamers. Depending on the average glow current, the time delay from streamer bridging the electrodes gap to spark breakdown ranges from 0.5 μs to 25 μs within test conditions. With regard to the attachment stability inside streamer channel, a simplified criterion for streamer-glow-spark transition is also discussed in this paper. Theoretical estimations of the time delay are in good agreement with the experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, the NO-to-NO 2 conversion in various gaseous mixtures is experimentally investigated. Streamer coronas are produced with a dc-superimposed high-frequency ac power supply (10–60 kHz). According to NO x removal experiments in N 2 +NO x and N 2 +O 2 +NO x gaseous mixtures, it is supposed that the reverse reaction NO 2 +O→NO+O 2 may not only limit NO 2 production in N 2 +NO x mixtures, but also increase the energy cost for NO removal. Oxygen could significantly suppress reduction reactions and enhance oxidation processes. The reduction reactions, such as N+NO→N 2 +O, induce negligible NO removal provided the O 2 concentration is larger than 3.6%. With adding H 2 O into the reactor, the produced NO 2 per unit removed NO can be significantly reduced due to NO 2 oxidation. NH 3 injection could also significantly decrease the produced NO 2 via NH and NH 2 - related reduction reactions. Almost 100% of NO 2 can be removed in gaseous mixtures of N 2 +O 2 +H 2 O+NO 2 with negligible NO production.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of C02 injection rate on the flow stabilized positive DC corona discharge in dry air are experimentally investigated. As an example of chemical reactions induced by different corona modes, NO removal is also studied in gaseous mixtures of N2+O2+CO2+NOx at atmospheric pressure and in room temperature. The transition between glow and streamer can be controlled by C02 on and off injection. 95% of NO can be removed under streamer corona discharge with an energy yield of about 12.5–25g(NO)/kWh. However, for glow corona discharge, the NO removal is negligible.

Abstract:This paper discusses some critical issues when developing industrial corona plasma systems. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, the power conditions for streamer corona plasma generation can be basically divided into two groups, namely ultra-short and high-frequency oscillation DC/AC sources. Today, single- and multiple-switch circuit topologies become available to scale the ultra-short pulsed-power system up. DC/AC sources are being introduced into the market. With regard to processing conditions and costs of the power sources, this paper presents their advantages and drawbacks. In order to develop very large scale plasma systems, a new energization technique to integrate the power source and the reactor has been developed for energization of multiple reactors. Today, various options are available for industrial plasma applications, and the data available would be sufficient enough to carry out commercial-scale designs for both odour emission control and exhaust gas cleaning.

Abstract:Gas cleaning techniques using non-thermal plasma are slowly introduced into industry nowadays. Here we present a novel power modulator for the efficient generation of large volume corona plasma. No expensive high-voltage components are required. Switching is done at an intermediate voltage level of 1 kV with standard thyristors. Detailed investigations on the modulator and a wire-plate corona reactor will be presented. In a systematic way, modulator parameters have been varied. Also reactor parameters, as the number of electrodes and the electrode-plate distance have been varied systematically. The yield of O-radicals was determined from the measured ozone concentrations at the exhaust of the reactor.

Abstract:This paper discusses the global chemical kinetics of corona plasma-induced chemical reactions for pollution control. If there are no significant radical termination reactions, the pollution removal linearly depends on the corona energy density and/or the energy yield is a constant. If linear radical termination reactions play a dominant role, the removal rate shows experimental functions in terms of the corona energy density. If the radical concentration is significantly affected by nonlinear termination reactions, the removal rate depends on the square root of the corona energy density. These characteristics are also discussed with examples of VOC s and NO x removal and multiple processing. Moreover, this paper also discusses how to match a corona plasma reactor with a voltage pulse generator in order to increase the total energy efficiency. For a given corona reactor, a minimum peak voltage is found for matching a voltage pulse generator. Optimized relationship between the voltage rise time, the output impedance of a voltage pulse generator, and the stray capacitance of a corona reactor is presented. As an example, the paper discusses a 5.0-kW hybrid corona nonthermal plasma system for NO x removal from exhaust gases.

Abstract:Tar (heavy hydrocarbon or Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH)) removal from biomass derived fuel gas is one of the biggest obstacles in its utilization for power generation. We have investigated pulsed corona as a method for tar removal. Our previous experimental results indicated an energy consumption of 200–250J/L at an optimum gas temperature of 400°C. One of the challenges in scaling up a process based on pulsed corona is the availability of high power pulsed power sources. To overcome this, a newer method of streamer corona generation by an alternative “DC/AC” power source is investigated. Energy consumption for tar removal process is used as a basis for comparing the two methods for its chemical efficiency. Results indicate the pulsed corona system and DC/AC system to have similar efficiency.

Abstract:This paper discusses some critical issues of developing industrial streamer corona plasma systems for gas cleaning. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, two energization methods, namely hybrid-pulsed power source (HPPS) and DC-superimposed, high-frequency AC oscillation (DC/AC), were developed for industrial applications. As an example, a result of an industrial investigation on odor emission abatement is presented. The data available is sufficient enough for the commercial-scale design of a corona plasma system for DeNO(x), DeSO(2), deodorization and dust removal. We foresee that by retrofitting available ESPs, plasma-based gas-cleaning systems will be applied in the near future to simultaneously remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles.

Abstract:Very important physical and chemical features of corona plasmas are electrons, ions and radicals generation. It is foreseen that the next generation gas cleaning system - called zero emission system, to remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles simultaneously, can be developed based on ions and radicals generated by corona plasmas. Potential applications are flue gas cleaning, odour control, inactivation of micro-organisms, wastewater cleaning, synthesis gas cleaning, methane reforming, hydrogen production from fossil fuels, material surface treatment, and nano-particle generation. There are two critical issues to be overcome for large-scale industrial applications. The first one is the capacity and the cost of repetitive pulsed power techniques, and the second is the total energy consumption. This paper discusses the most relevant fundamental investigations and system developments for pollution control and sustainable development.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art of power conditions for streamer–corona plasma applications. It also discusses some critical issues when developing industrial systems. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, the power conditions can be divided into two groups—namely, hybrid pulsed-power system (HPPS) and DC/AC. Today, single- and multiple-switch circuit topologies have become available to scaleup the HPPS system. DC/AC sources are being introduced into the market. Over the past 20 years, pulsed corona plasma system was expected to be integrated together with electrostatic precipitator for a simultaneous removal of dusts, SO2, NOx, and heavy metals from exhaust gases. The data available would be sufficient enough for commercial-scale design for either odor-emission control or exhaust-gas cleaning. By retrofitting available electrostatic precipitation (ESP), a plasma-based gas cleaning system to simultaneously remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles will be applied in the near future.

Abstract:With regard to pollution emission control, there are two critical issues that are blocking corona plasma industrial applications. The first one is the capacity of repetitive pulse power techniques, and the second is the total energy consumption. Worldwide research and development on industrial corona plasma systems were very much dependant on individual empirical experience. Systems were not designed at an optimized operation. To the authors' knowledge, no group has tried to bridge the gap between the fundamental characteristics of corona plasma, chemical reactions, pulsed power generators and the corona plasma reactor. This paper discusses their recent work in developing industrial corona plasma systems for industrial applications. (4 pages)

Abstract:For pulsed corona plasma applications, it becomes important to develop pilot systems with large average power and high-energy conversion efficiency. Since the beginning of 2000, we have been working on an industrial corona plasma system with tasks of 10-30 kW in average power and higher than 90% of total energy conversion efficiency. The pulsed-power source should have the following specifications: rise time of 10-25 ns, pulsewidth of 50-150 ns, pulse repetition rate of up to 1000 pulses per second, peak voltage pulse of 70 kV, peak current of 3.5 kA, dc bias voltage of 10-35 kV, and energy per pulse of up to 30 J. Sixteen parallel wire cylinder reactors are used to match. the source. Gas and reactor temperatures can be controlled individually with water flow around the outside of those cylinders. The system is designed for gaseous oxidation and electrostatic dust precipitation. The system has been used for up to 17 kW in average power. This paper reports the system in detail, discusses issues related to the matching between the source and the reactor, and presents an example of industrial demonstrations on odor abatement at 1000 m(3)/h. Finally, this paper also gives a general guideline for design of corona plasma systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel type of a corona discharge plasma reactor was designed, which consists of needle-plate-combined electrodes, in which a series of needle electrodes are placed in a glass container filled with flue gas, and a plate electrode is immersed in the water. Based on this model, the removal of NO and SO2 was tested experimentally. In addition, the effect of streamer polarity on the reduction of SO2 and NO was investigated in detail. The experimental results show that the corona wind formed between the high-voltage needle electrode and the water by corona discharge enhances the cleaning efficiency of the flue gas because of the presence of water, and the cleaning efficiency will increase with the increase of applied dc voltage within a definite range. The removal efficiency of SO2 up to 98%, and about 85% of NOx removal under suitable conditions is obtained in our experiments.

Abstract:Pulsed corona discharge for NOX/SO2 destruction has been studied for many years, but how to achieve higher removal rate and energy yield of pollutants remains a critical issue. This paper studied enhancement of the energy yield of NOx removal by additive activated with corona dicharge. The experimental results demonstrate that corona radical injection can decrease the energy consumption, increase the removal rate and the energy yield of NOX removal. When ammonia and propene are injected from nozzle electrodes supplied with pulse power supply, NO and NOx removal rate can be increased by about 8% and 10% at a lower consumption compared with additives injected from the inlet of reactor.

Abstract:NOx emission (mainly NO) from industrial boilers and other sources can cause harm to public health and ecosystem. In recent years, non-thermal plasma processes including pulse corona for gaseous pollutants control have received many attentions. For pulse corona discharge, electrode configuration and pulse polarity may have influence on NOx removal through their effect on the generation of active de-NOx species. In this study, NO removal efficiencies under different electrode configurations were compared, and effect of pulse polarity on NO removal was also studied. Experimental results indicate that the highest de-NO efficiency was obtained when hybrid nozzle-wire electrode worked in the positive pulse corona regime. When propene was used as de-NO additive, NO removal rate reached 79.5%, and the corresponding energy yield was 126.4 g(NO)/kWh.

Abstract:In a streamer dominated pulse corona the energetic electrons can interact with the gas molecules and produce radicals. Emission of second positive band (SPB) of the nitrogen, which was considered to correspond to local yield of N radical, was monitored in this study for analyzing N radical effect on removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from exhaust gases. It was found that the length of high luminous region (HLR) is related to energy efficiency of NOx removal. It was also testified that total emission intensity of SPB is linearly proportional with NOx removal in NO/N2 mixture gas. Analysis of experimental data shows that the NOx removal energy efficiency is smaller when pulse width is longer. The energy efficiency also decreases with the increase of injected power and length of HLR, respectively. It was assumed that the local concentrated production of N radical in HLR is not effectively used for NO removal in the condition of low initial NOx concentration. It is concluded that the luminescence analysis provides a good method to understand NOx removal process in pulse discharge corona.
