Abstract:We study transport properties of Fibonacci semiconductor superlattices in a uniform magnetic field (B) applied along the growth direction. Complicated magnetoresistance oscillations which do not vary periodically in 1/B are found. A field-dependent metal-insulator transition is predicted, and it is shown that the magnetoresistance increases with increasing order of the periodic approximant. Also, we show that at low enough temperature the longitudinal magnetoresistance of a high-order periodic approximant of the quasiperiodic superlattice can be distinguished from that of a low-order periodic approximant.
Structural Characterization of Three-Component Fibonacci Ta/Al Multilayer Films.

Abstract:A new class of quasiperiodic superlattice structures called three-component Fibonacci structures has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. These structures with the characteristic irrational intervals A, B, and C can be produced by the substitution rule A --> AC, C --> B, and B--> A. The projection method is applied to deal with the pattern and index of their diffraction spectrum. The analytical results are compared with the experimental one from three-component Fibonacci Ta/Al superlattices. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical calculations using the model for compositionally modulated multilayers. Some possible applications of these structures are discussed.

Abstract:1-D quasiperiodic (Fibonacci) Cu/Ti metallic superlattices have been prepared in a dual magnetron sputter deposition system. X-ray scattering measurements of these samples are presented. The x-ray diffraction peaks at low angles can be indexed by the projection method from the high-dimensional periodic structure. In the high angle region, there is one broad peak, which indicates that the samples are amorphous.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of a family of generalized Fibonacci lattices associated with the sequences which are given by the inflation rule (A, B)→(ABn,A) withn>1. Analytical and numerical analyses reveal the existence of a state transition phenomenon, i.e. a transition from the local density of states with a smooth behavior in some energy regions to another one without any smooth part.

Abstract:A new type of Fibonacci optical superlattice is analysed. Its electro-optic effect is studied. The phase-matching concept is proposed for the first time for the Fibonacci optical superlattice. The transmission spectrum is non-self-similar owing to the dispersive effect of the refractive index. An extinction phenomenon exists provided that the thicknesses of the domains are properly selected.

Abstract:The plasmon properties of generalized Fibonacci type I and type II semiconductor superlattices are studied by a dynamical-map method. It is shown that the plasmon spectra are Cantor-set-like, i.e. the spectra are self-similar and the gaps in the spectra are densely distributed.

Abstract:AbstractA global cut‐and‐project method is developed. By this technique, the construction is discussed of aperiodic lattices including both, generalized Fibonacci lattices and octagonal, decagonal, and dodecagonal quasilattices. Diffraction patterns with 8‐, 10‐, and 12‐fold symmetries are simulated, which agree well with the experimental results. A modulation is introduced to explain the two alternating sets of periodic layers along the 10‐fold axis in the diffraction pattern of decagonal quasicrystal.

Abstract:The linear response theory is used to obtain the transfer matrix of the induced potential in a semiconductor superlattice system, in which the sub-band structure is taken into account. Using the transfer matrix to the Fibonacci superlattice, the authors calculate the spectrum of the intra-sub-band and inter-sub-band collective excitations in such a system. The scaling properties of the spectrum are analysed.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical characterization of superlattices generated by the production rule Sj = mSj-1 + Sj-2 with the initial conditions S1 = A and S2 = AnB have been studied theoretically. For each m and n, the real space structure is quite different. However superlattices with the same m but different n have the same reciprocal space structure, thus forming an `isotope' family. The result shows the promising applications of these superlattices in nonlinear optical frequency conversion.

Abstract:We investigate the renormalization group of the generalized Fibonacci lattices associated with the aperiodic sequences as constructed by the inflation rule: {A,B} --> {A(n)B(m),A}, in which m and n are positive integers. The derived renormalization group consists of 2n(n+m-1)+1 basic renormalization-group transformations. By suitable combinations of these basic transformations, local Green's function and local density of states at any sites can be calculated for electrons on the generalized Fibonacci lattices. The off-diagonal model is employed, and the local electronic densities of states at several sites are numerically calculated for some generalized Fibonacci lattices.
Superconductivity in the Fibonacci Chain

Abstract:Superconductivity was recently reported in several quasicrystalline systems. These are materials which are structurally ordered, but since they are not translationally invariant, the usual BCS theory does not apply. At the present time, the underlying mechanism and the properties of the superconducting phase are insufficiently understood. To gain a better understanding of quasiperiodic superconductors, we consider the attractive Hubbard model on the Fibonacci chain, and examine its low-temperature superconducting phase in detail using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field approach. We obtain superconducting solutions as a function of the parameters controlling the physical properties of the system: the strength of the Hubbard attraction $U$, the chemical potential $\mu$, and the strength of the modulation of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, $w$. We find that there is a bulk transition at a critical temperature that obeys a power law in $U$. The local superconducting order parameter is self-similar both in real and perpendicular space. The local densities of states vary from site to site, however, the width of the superconducting gap is the same on all sites. The interplay between the Hubbard attraction and the intrinsic gaps of the Fibonacci chain results in a complex zero-temperature $\mu$-$U$ phase diagram with insulating domes surrounded by superconducting regions. Finally, we show that tuning $w$ from weak to strong quasicrystalline modulation gives rise to qualitatively different thermodynamic behaviors as could be observed by measuring the specific heat.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of the generalized Fibonacci lattices generated by the inflation rule (A, B) --> (AB(n), A) with n > 1. A unified real-space renormalization-group scheme is presented for calculating the exact local Green's function at any given site. Analysis suggests that there are extended states in these lattices. Furthermore, the appearance of the extended states and the smoothness of the local density of states depends on the system parameters, implying that these exists a state transition phenomenon similar to that of the incommensurate Harper's model.

Abstract:The present paper deals with the recent progresses in super carbon nanotubes, fractal super tubes, fractal super fibres and multifractal super fibres. The concept and main ideas about super carbon nanotubes are recalled first. The marvellous properties of the super carbon nanotubes are reviewed. Then, the super carbon nanotube is further extended to fractal super carbon nanotube and fractal super tube, and the necessary conditions for forming a fractal super tube are summarised. To explain the paradox in the fractal dimension of fractal super tubes, fractal super fibres are constructed. To depict the multifractal-like geometries of biological fibres, the multifractal super fibres are designed from the hybrid of various single fractal super fibres.

Abstract:We were the first to report the realization of quasiperiodic amorphous semiconductor superlattices composed of alternating layers of a-Si:H and a-SiNx:H to form a Fibonacci sequence in which the ratio of incommensurate periods is equal to the golden mean, τ = (1+√5)/2. In the present work new results of low-angle X-ray diffraction with Lf = τLa+Lb = 148Å are in good agreement with a numerical calculation using the formula km,n = 2πLf−1(m+nτ). The effect of the quasiperiodicity on folded-zone longitudinal acoustic phonons is observed by Raman scattering. The folded-phonon frequencies calculated from an elastic continuum model are consistent with the observed doublet-peak frequencies.

Abstract:Quasi-periodic (Fibonacci sequence) Ta-Al multilayer films were fabricated by magnetron sputtering, and studied by electron and X-ray diffraction. Eleven orders of electron diffraction satellite spots were obtained. Their positions and intensities were in good agreement with the data from X-ray diffraction, and both were in excellent agreement with the theoretical positions predicted by the projection method, k = 2-pi-D-1(n + m-tau). Transmission electron microscope studies of the thin film cross-sections showed the well-formed layered structures of Fibonacci sequence Ta-Al superlattices. The films have textures with Ta [110] and Al [111] in the growth direction, and coherent stacking in the quasi-periodic multilayers.

Abstract:Using the extended real-space renormalizaation-group approach, we study the local electr-onic properties of a class of one-dimensional quasicrystals (the generalized Fibonacci chains) in the framework of tight-binding model. These quasiperiodic systems are termed the An chains, which are associated with the sequences generated by the inflation rule (A, B)→(AnB, A). We introduce 2n2+1 transformations for calculating the local electronic Green's function and the local electronic density of state at any site in any one of An chains for the diagonal, offdiago-nal and combined models. It is shown that this approach is effective and the local electronic density of states is critical, just as that of Fibonacci quasicrystal.
Enhancement of Superconductivity in the Fibonacci Chain

Abstract:We study the interplay between quasi-periodic disorder and superconductivity in a 1D tight-binding model with the quasi-periodic modulation of on-site energies that follow the Fibonacci rule and all the eigenstates are multifractal. As a signature of multifractality, we observe the power-law dependence of the correlation between different single-particle eigenstates as a function of their energy difference. By computing numerically the superconducting transition temperature, we find the distribution of critical temperatures, analyze their statistics and estimate the mean value and variance of critical temperatures for various regimes of the attractive coupling strength and quasi-periodic disorder. We find an enhancement of the critical temperature as compared to the analytical results that are based on strong assumptions of absence of correlations and self-averaging of multiple characteristics of the system, which are not justified for the Fibonacci chain. For the very weak coupling regime, we observe a crossover where the self-averaging of the critical temperature breaks down completely and a strong sample-to-sample fluctuations emerge.

End superconductivity and three critical temperatures in Fibonacci quasicrystals

Abstract:Recently, the superconducting properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals have attracted considerable attention. By numerically solving the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a Fibonacci chain under superconducting proximity, we find that the system exhibits universal end superconductivity, where the pair potential at the chain ends can persist at higher temperatures compared to the bulk critical temperature ($T_{cb}$) of the condensate in the chain center. Furthermore, our study reveals two distinct critical temperatures at the left end ($T_{cL}$) and right end ($T_{cR}$), governing the superconducting condensate at the chain ends. This complex behavior arises from the competition between topological bound states and critical states, characteristic of quasicrystals. Due to the geometric configuration of Fibonacci chain approximants, $T_{cL}$ and $T_{cb}$ are independent of the Fibonacci sequence number $n$, while $T_{cR}$ significantly depends on the parity of $n$. With the chosen parameters, the maximal enhancement of $T_{cR}$ occurs for even $n$, reaching up to $50\%$ relative to $T_{cb}$, while $T_{cL}$ can increase by up to $23\%$. Our study sheds light on the phenomenon of end superconductivity in Fibonacci quasicrystals, pointing to alternative pathways for discovering materials with higher superconducting critical temperatures.

Abstract:Correlating nanoscale building blocks with mesoscale superlattices, mimicking metal alloys, a rational engineering strategy becomes critical to generate designed periodicity with emergent properties. For molecule-based superlattices, nevertheless, nonrigid molecular features and multistep self-assembly make the molecule-to-superlattice correlation less straightforward. In addition, single component systems possess intrinsically limited volume asymmetry of self-assembled spherical motifs (also known as "mesoatoms"), further hampering novel superlattices' emergence. In the current work, we demonstrate that properly designed molecular systems could generate a spectrum of unconventional superlattices. Four categories of giant molecules are presented. We systematically explore the lattice-forming principles in unary and binary systems, unveiling how molecular stoichiometry, topology, and size differences impact the mesoatoms and further toward their superlattices. The presence of novel superlattices helps to correlate with Frank-Kasper phases previously discovered in soft matter. We envision the present work offers new insights about how complex superlattices could be rationally fabricated by scalable-preparation and easy-to-process materials.
