Abstract:The 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the phosphidation of corresponding 80%Ni/Al2O3 with triphenylphosphine in liquid phase and compared with the 60%Ni2P/Al2O3 for hydrotreating reactions. Both the 60%Ni2P/Al2O3 and 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 in comparison exhibited the small and uniform Ni2P particles (6.3 and 8.4 nm, respectively), high CO uptakes (305 and 345 mu mol/g, respectively) and thus high activities for the hydrotreating reactions. After the hydrotreating reactions, the small and uniform Ni2P particles were remained, although the CO uptakes on the used 60%Ni2P/Al2O3 and 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 were greatly decreased (to 68 and 95 mu mol/g, respectively) due to the incorporation of S into the Ni2P surfaces. The 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 was found to be significantly more active than the 60%Ni2P/Al2O3 due to that the 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 possessed more, and more active Ni2P sites than the 60%Ni2P/Al2O3, probably due to the less S incorporated in the 80%Ni2P/Al2O3 than in the 60%Ni2P/Al2O3 during the hydrotreating reactions. Effect of Zr on Catalytic Performance of Unsupported Ni(Zr)Mo and Ni(Zr)W Sulfide Catalysts for Quinoline Hydrodenitrogenation

Abstract:To increase the dispersion of active species and full utilization of active metals are of great importance for hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) performance of unsupported hydrotreating catalysts. Herein, a series of unsupported Ni(Zr)MoS and Ni(Zr)WS catalysts were prepared from Ni(Zr) layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursors. The Zr species remarkably promote the dispersion and reducibility of NiMo and NiW composite species. Also, the total HDN rate constants are increased from 2.42 h(-1) to 9.18 h(-1) for Ni(Zr)MoS and from 5.68 h(-1) to 23.0 h(-1) for Ni(Zr)WS, and exhibit a maximum at a Zr/Ni atomic ratio of about 0.04. The HDN selectivities indicate that the Zr species increase the number of superficial active sites without affecting their structure. The present work shows that the crystallinity of LDH precursors is crucial to the structure of unsupported sulfide catalysts, and a suitable amount of Zr could be a dispersive promoter to increase the HDN activity.

Abstract:The catalytic activity, hydrothermal aging resistance, and sulfur tolerance of a Pd-Pt-based methane oxidation catalyst were evaluated in a fixed fluidized bed reactor containing simulated lean-burn natural gas vehicle exhaust gases. Zirconium-doped Pd-Pt/Al2O3 (Pd-Pt/ZrxAl(1-x)O(3+x)/2) was found to significantly improve the catalytic activity, hydrothermal aging resistance, and sulfur tolerance. Zr-modified alumina supports were prepared by co-precipitation with molar ratios of Zr to Al of 0: 1, 0.25 : 0.75, 0.5: 0.5, 0.75 : 0.25, and 1: 0. The Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts containing 1.5% (w, mass fraction) Pd and 0.3% (w) Pt supported on the above-modified composite supports were prepared by the co-impregnating method. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), O-2 temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the crystallinity of the samples, dispersion of the active component, number of Pd2+ species, and electron density around Pd2+ species increase after addition of ZrO2 to Al2O3 supports. Compared with the activity results of Pd-Pt/Al2O3 and Pd-Pt/ZrO2 catalysts after different pretreatment conditions, the performance of the catalyst is greatly enhanced by adding ZrO2. in the Al2O3 supports, and Pd-Pt/Zr0.5Al0.5O1.75 shows the best catalytic activity, strongest hydrothermal aging resistance, and highest sulfur tolerance among the investigated catalysts.

Abstract:Zirconia supported on alumina was prepared and characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and pulse reaction. 0.2% Pd/ZrO2/Al2O3 catalyst were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation of supports with aqueous solution of Pd(NO3)2. The effects of support properties on catalytic activity for methane combustion and CO oxidation were investigated. The results show that ZrO2 is highly dispersed on the surface of Al2O3 up to 10wt.% ZrO2, beyond this value tetragonal ZrO2 is formed. The presence of a small amount of ZrO2 can increase the surface area, pore volume and acidity of support. CO–TPD results show that the increase of CO adsorption capacity and the activation of CO bond after the presence of ZrO2 lead to the increase of catalytic activity of Pd catalyst for CO oxidation. CO pulse reaction results indicate that the lattice oxygen of support can be activated at lower temperature following the presence of ZrO2, but it does not accelerate the activity of 0.2% Pd/ZrO2/Al2O3 for methane combustion. 0.2% Pd/ZrO2/Al2O3 dried at 120°C shows highest activity for CH4 combustion, and the activity can be further enhanced following the repeat run. The increase of treatment temperature and pre-reduction can decrease the activity of catalyst for CH4 combustion.

Abstract:Ni2P/Al2O3, Ni2P/MgAlO and Ni2P/MgO catalysts were prepared by the phosphidation of corresponding Ni/Al2O3, Ni/MgAlO and Ni/MgO with triphenylphosphine in liquid phase and compared with the previously reported Ni2P/SiO2 catalyst. It was found that the Ni2P/Al2O3 and Ni2P/MgAlO prepared by the pre-reduction at 723 K followed by the phosphidation at 443 K exhibited the high activities for the hydrotreating reactions. The two catalysts possessed small and homogeneously distributed Ni2P particles (6.5 and 8.3 nm, respectively) with high CO uptakes (305 and 269 mu mol/g, respectively). After the hydrotreating reactions, the Ni2P phase in the catalysts remained and the sizes of Ni2P particles increased a little to 6.9 and 9.2 nm, respectively. However, the CO uptakes on the used Ni2P/Al2O3 and Ni2P/MgAlO catalysts were greatly decreased to 68 and 74 mu mol/g, respectively, owing to the incorporation of S into the Ni2P surfaces. According to the CO uptakes on the used catalysts, it was found that the TOF values of hydrodesulphurization of dibenzothiophene on the Ni2P/Al2O3, Ni2P/MgAlO and Ni2P/SiO2 were similar, indicating that these supports did not affect the HDS activity, while the TOF values of hydrogenation of tetralin to decalin were significantly higher on Ni2P/MgAlO than on Ni2P/SiO2, indicating that Ni2P/MgAlO might be better than Ni2P/SiO2 for the hydrotreating reactions. Abstract:ZrO2 was prepared via the hydrothermal method and used as the support of nickel catalysts in the partial oxidation of methane to syngas. The hydrothermal conditions (such as hydrothermal temperature, hydrothermal time, and the concentration of NaOH used) necessary for ZrO2 preparation were investigated and optimized. The physicochemical properties of ZrO2 supports and Ni/ZrO2 catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that low hydrothermal temperatures, short hydrothermal time, and low concentrations of NaOH benefited the formation of tetragonal ZrO2. Elevating the hydrothermal temperature (from 160 degrees C to 200 degrees C), prolonging the hydrothermal time (from 6 h to 48 h), or increasing the concentration of NaOH (from 5 wt % to 40 wt %) would lead to the disappearance of tetragonal ZrO2 and an increase in the degree of monoclinic ZrO2 crystallization. The Ni/ZrO2 catalysts with ZrO2 prepared with high NaOH concentration or with ZrO2 prepared at long hydrothermal times possessed excellent catalytic activities and resistance to carbon formation. Whereas the Ni/ZrO2 catalysts with ZrO2 prepared with low NaOH concentration or with ZrO2 prepared at short hydrothermal time deactivated soon because of carbon deposition.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of CO oxidation on Pd/Al2O3 catalysts doped with ZrO2 was examined in different atomspheres. The interaction of Zr-Al, the effect of property of the desorption-renewal of oxygen species on the catalysts was investigated by XRD TPR and TPD-MS techniques. The results showed that suitable amount of ZrO2 would promote the desorption and renewal of oxygen species on catalysts. Thus, it increased the activities of CO oxidation and the reaction between H-2 and O-2 on the catalysts. The catalyst doped with ZrO2 showed the best reactivity.

Abstract:In this work, a series of ZrO2-supported Cu, Ni and bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in the in situ hydrogenation and decarboxylation of oleic acid using methanol as a hydrogen donor. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was a Cu-Ni alloy that was highly dispersed on mixed m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. The bimetallic Cu-Ni/ZrO2 nanostructures not only exhibited better catalytic activity for the conversion of oleic acid compared to monometallic Cu/ZrO2 and Ni/ZrO2 catalysts but also demonstrated good reuse performance. The formation of the Cu-Ni alloy facilitated the decarboxylation reaction and inhibited the cracking reaction, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The good stability of Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was primarily due to the good hydrothermal stability of the ZrO2 support.
Effect of Oxide Support Surface Area on Hydrogenation Activity: Pt/Ni Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on Low and High Surface Area Al2o3 and Zro2

Abstract:Catalyst characterization and batch reactor studies have been performed to better understand the effects of oxide support and support surface area on low-temperature 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation over supported PtNi bimetallic catalysts. The supports studied in this work are: α-Al2O3 (10–16m2/g), γ-Al2O3 (80–120m2/g), low surface area ZrO2 (20–30m2/g), and high surface area ZrO2 (100–200m2/g). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) were used to characterize the particle size and the extent of Pt–Ni bimetallic bond formation, respectively. The bimetallic catalysts supported on the two low surface area supports show larger metal nanoparticles; however, these catalysts also display greater extent of bimetallic bond formation, as characterized by the Pt LIII-edge EXAFS. After normalizing the hydrogenation rate constants for the two alumina-supported catalysts by the CO uptake values, the two rate constants appear very similar, suggesting that the bimetallic nanoparticles have similar structures on the alumina supports. In contrast, normalizing the hydrogenation rate constants for the two zirconia catalysts reveals that the catalyst supported on the high surface area zirconia is approximately twenty times less active, suggesting a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between the metal nanoparticles and the high surface area zirconia support.
Effect of Zn/Al Ratio of Ni/Zno-Al2o3 Catalysts on the Catalytic Deoxygenation of Oleic Acid into Alkane

Abstract:Ni-based catalysts supported on Zn-Al composite oxides have been prepared for the catalytic deoxygenation of oleic acid into diesel-ranged alkanes, and the effects of the Zn/Al ratio on the physico-chemical properties of the supports and the deoxygenation activity of the final catalyst were investigated in detail. The results showed that higher Zn/Al ratios led to lower specific surface area of the supports and weakening of the interaction between Ni species and supports thereby improving the reducibility of Ni species. However, higher Zn/Al ratios may limit the dispersion of Ni species, leading to a decrease in the exposure of metallic Ni. Because the conversion and deoxygenation of the reactants mainly depended on the hydrogenation capability of the catalysts which was controlled by the amount of exposed metallic Ni, the catalyst with a Zn/Al ratio of 2/1 showed the highest hydrogenation rate and alkane yield. Further decreasing the Zn/Al ratio led to strong metal-support interaction, making the Ni species difficult to reduce, which may also inhibit the formation of alkane products. In addition, the change in Zn/Al ratio affected intermediate type, which could affect the yield of alkane products. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Effect of Zirconium modified Y zeolite via in situ synthesis and its regulation on the formation of excellent NiW catalyst for ultra-deep hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-DMDBT

Abstract:Alternative support materials, such as Y zeolite, have been introduced to overcome the challenges associated with industrial alumina-supported hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts. However, to improve catalytic activity while avoiding excessive hydrocarbon cracking, the properties of Y zeolite, including acidity, should be modulated. Herein, Zr-modified Y zeolite was prepared via in-situ synthesis, and the corresponding NiW catalyst was obtained by impregnating hybrid zeolite-alumina supports with metal precursors. The catalytic performance was tested using 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) as an HDS probe. The position of the Zr species in the zeolites depended on the modification methods. The ZrHY zeolite prepared by impregnation mainly formed non-framework ZrO2 on the surface of zeolite, whereas the HZrY zeolite via in-situ synthesis exhibited Zr species dispersed in the zeolitic framework. Zr species in the zeolitic framework not only enhanced the acidities of the zeolite and hybrid-support (HZrY-Al2O3), but also regulated the interaction of active metals and hybrid support, which significantly enhancing the catalytic activity of the catalyst. Among the four investigated catalysts, the turnover frequency (TOF) and reaction rate constant (k) of 4,6-DMDBT HDS over NiW/HZrYA catalyst were higher efficient than those of other catalysts, and their isomerization selectivity was improved, reducing hydrogen consumption. This enhanced efficiency was attributed to the NiW/HZrYA catalyst having more suitable acid sites, a greater degree of active metals sulfidation, more NiWS phase, superior isomerization performance, and a higher matching degree between hydrogenation and hydrolysis activity. These findings are great meaning for design the ultra-deep low hydrogen consumption HDS catalysts.

Abstract:The Ni2P/MgAlO catalysts with different MgO/Al2O3 ratios were prepared by the phosphidation of corresponding Ni/MgAlO catalysts with triphenylphosphine in liquid phase. It was found that the MgO/Al2O3 ratio affected the Ni2P/MgAlO catalysts significantly. The Ni2P/MgAlO catalyst with the MgO/Al2O3 ratio of 3 (w/w) exhibited the highly dispersed Ni2P particles (∼9nm) with the highest CO uptake (344µmol/g) and thus the highest activities for the hydrotreating reactions. However, based on the CO uptakes on the used catalysts, the TOF values for the hydrodesulphurization of dibenzothiophene as well as those for the hydrogenation of tetralin on all the Ni2P/MgAlO catalysts were respectively similar, indicating that the MgO/Al2O3 ratio did not affect the intrinsic activities of Ni2P supported on the MgAlO support for the hydrotreating reactions.
Hydrotreating of diesel fuel over in-situ nickel modified Y zeolite supported Ni-Mo-S catalyst

Abstract:In order to further improve the hydrogenation performance of the existing hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts and explore the structure-activity relationship of the catalysts, a series of Ni modified Y zeolites were successfully synthesized by in-situ synthesis method, and the corresponding NiMo catalysts supported on Ni modified Y zeolites and γ-Al2O3 were prepared for diesel fuel hydrotreating. The effect of Ni modification on the properties of the synthesized xNiY zeolites and the corresponding NiMo/AxNiY catalysts were determined by the characterization techniques such as XRD, ICP-AES, N2 physical adsorption-desorption, SEM, UV-Vis DRS, Py-FTIR, HRTEM and XPS. The results show the in-situ modification method can achieve a favorable composite effect of Ni species and the Y zeolites and Ni modification can affect the physical-chemical properties of the synthesized Y zeolites and the NiMo/AxNiY catalysts in varying degrees. Although Ni modification led to a slight decrease in the specific surface areas and pore volumes of the Y zeolites, it can promote the particle uniformity and improve the number of acid sites of the Y zeolites, which are beneficial to the adsorption of sulfide molecules. Moreover, the incorporation of Ni into Y zeolites can also effectively improve the number of acid sites of the prepared NiMo/AxNiY catalysts and improve the stacking number of MoS2 slabs, and enhance the Mo species dispersion, which promote the adsorption and hydrogenation performances of the reactants on the catalysts. Hence, the catalysts containing Ni modified Y zeolites exhibited higher hydrotreating activity compared with the catalyst containing unmodified Y zeolites. Among the four investigated catalysts, the NiMo/A3NiY was found to be the most favorable for the purpose of preparing highly active hydrotreating catalysts for diesel fuels.

Abstract:Pt-Ni bimetallic catalysts and the corresponding monometallic Pt catalysts supported on γ-Al2 O3 were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by X-ray diffraction,H2-chemisorption and BET.Their activities for methylcyclohexane dehydrogenation were investigated in a fixed bed reactor.The results showed that the Pt-Ni bimetallic catalyst significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution and catalytic stability compared with Pt monometallic catalyst.H2-chemisorption revealed that the adding of Ni increased the dispersion of Pt,while TEM showed that a larger particle size of Pt.Combined the two characterization results, we concluded that the adding of Ni leaded a new Pt-Ni system which increased the binding energy of the bimetallic surface,and this finally increased the activity and stability of catalyst.The results offered a new way to develop high efficiency dehydrogenation catalyst.

Abstract:Diesel oxidation catalysts Pt-Pd-(y)ZrO2-(z)WO3/CeZrOx-Al2O3 with total Pt & Pd loading of only 0.68 wt.% were prepared and investigated for oxidation activity and stability of CO, C3H6, and NO. Introduction of ZrO2 greatly improved low-temperature activities and retained stability especially for CO and C3H6 oxidation after treated at 800 °C. With the optimal loading amount of 6 wt% ZrO2, 2 wt% WO3 was introduced to the system and showed higher activity. Reaction temperature for 50% CO and C3H6 conversion declined to 160 and 181 °C, and the maximal NO conversion increased to 50%. By using XRD, TEM, CO chemisorption, XPS, and H2-TPR analysis, it was found that ZrO2 could inhibit aggregation of Pt and Pd, improve metal dispersion, and increase surface-chemisorbed oxygen after high-temperature treatment, accounting for promoted performance. Also, there were more reducible oxide species in ZrO2-doped catalysts. ZrO2 could induce reduction of noble metal oxides and surface ceria by weakening Pt-O-Ce interaction, which increased the ability to dissociate H2 and spillover effect of dissociated hydrogen to ceria. Doping WO3 increased metal dispersion of fresh samples and brought more Pt0 species that were active sites for oxidation reactions. Thus, ZrO2 and WO3 could be effective additives for oxidation catalysts to synergistically improve their activities and thermal stability.

Abstract:The influences of ZrO2 on the properties of Al2O3 and performances of Pd/Al2O3 catalyst have been investigated The activities of catalysts for CO oxidation increase significantly with increasing the content of ZrO3. However, the introduction of ZrO2 can not enhance the catalytic activity for methane combustion over Pd/Al2O3. CO TPD results show that CO oxidation activity enhanced is due to the increment of the adsorptive capacity of CO and the activation of C=O bond after the introduction of ZrO2.

Abstract:Recently, the ZrO 2 -based catalysts for PDH exhibited high activity owing to the formation of oxygen vacancy and coordinatively unsaturated Zr (Zr cu ) sites. However, industrial C 3 H 8 raw gases typically contain trace amounts of oxygen at 10-1000 ppm, which can significantly decrease the PDH activity of nano-sized ZrO 2 catalyst, because that oxygen vacancy can be filled by the O 2 molecules rapidly, while the rate of lattice oxygen consumption is relatively slow. Here, highly dispersed NiO x species loading on ZrO 2 significantly increased C 3 H 6 formation rate (up to 6.6 times) and decreased the activation energy. The strong interaction between NiO x species and ZrO 2 enhances the ability of ZrO 2 to release its lattice oxygen, and increases the concentration of oxygen vacancy and unsaturated Zr-O acid-base pairs for PDH. This strategy can expand to other metal oxides interacted with ZrO 2 to eliminate the inhibiting effect of trace oxygen, such as GaO x , CoO x , CrO x , LaO x , and InO x .

Abstract:Diesel engines have been more and more widely used in heavy duty vehicles because of high efficiency and low fuel consumption compared with petrol engines. Taking ZrO2 as the additive, the influence of the mass ratio of ZrO2 to Al2O3 on catalytic performance was studied. The results show that, with an increase of ZrO2 doping, the Pt particles become smaller at first and then larger in the catalyst. The interaction between Pt and the carrier increases, and then decreases. Analysis of the activity data shows the optimized doping amount of ZrO2 is 40 wt% the complete oxidation temperatures of CO and C3H6 are reduced by 20 and 25 oC, respectively. When the ZrO2/Al2O3 mass ratio in the carrier is varied, the precious metal dispersion on the catalyst and the precious metals interaction with the carrier are different with varying levels. The smaller the Pt particle size, the stronger the interaction between precious metal and the carrier, and the performance of catalyst is improved.
