Abstract:A γ-AlH3/MgCl2 nano-composite, without or with Zn and Zr doping, was synthesized by solid state reaction milling using MgH2 and AlCl3 as reagents. The hydrogen desorption behaviour of the nano-composite was investigated by temperature programmed de-hydriding (TPD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests, and the microstructure evolution due to de-hydriding was characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM respectively. For de-hydriding by heating from 40 to 320 °C, a three-stage featured TPD curve was observed, with the maximum hydrogen desorption capacity excluding the MgCl2 in the composite achieving about 9.71 wt% when the temperature was raised to 240 °C and then remaining unchanged for the subsequent heating process to 320 °C. DSC and XRD tests revealed that three individual events, i.e., the transformation of γ-AlH3 to α-AlH3 phase, the direct decomposition of γ-AlH3 phase, and the subsequent decomposition of the α-AlH3 phase, take place during the de-hydriding process of the γ-AlH3/MgCl2 nano-composite. By doping the nano-composite with elements Zn and Zr, an improvement in the de-hydriding kinetics was observed. According to the calculation based on the fitting of de-hydriding kinetics data, it was found that the addition of Zn and Zr can reduce the activation energy for the de-hydriding reaction. Also, both the de-hydriding mechanism and the role that Zn and Zr play in the de-hydriding process were interpreted based on TEM observations.

Abstract:This paper investigates the catalytic effect of MnZr metallic coupling on hydrogenation of magnesium. It is found that MnZr coupling greatly increased the hydrogenation kinetics, especially at low temperatures. The system can absorb 5wt% hydrogen within 30 minutes at 150 degrees C. The effect of milling time on the microstructures and hydrogenation properties has also been investigated.

Abstract:The influence of trace Zr content on the microstructure and property of solidified structure of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys prepared under supergravity was investigated. The results show that compared with the alloy without Zr addition, the grain refinement degree of the top and the center of the alloy is small and the grain size of the bottom of the alloy greatly changes after adding 0.05％, 0.10％ and 0.15％ Zr respectively. With the increase of Zr content, the grain of the bottom of the alloy is refined firstly and then coarsens, and the eutectic phase at the grain boundary coarsens. When the Zr content is 0.05％, the grain refinement effect is the best. Zr can improve the hardness of the alloy solidified under supergravity.

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of trace zirconium on morphology of primary MgZn 2 in solidification microstructure of Zn-6Al-3Mg alloy using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results demonstrate that MgZn 2 exhibits a single crystal structure. The erosion of the liquid phase on MgZn 2 contributes to the formation of a secondary Al/MgZn 2 structure. Furthermore, the increase of zirconium content accelerates the erosion of MgZn 2 . When the zirconium content is at 0.09 wt%, the secondary Al/MgZn 2 structure reaches its stability limit. These findings open up new perspectives for further research on Zn-Al-Mg alloys.

Abstract:The reaction pathway as well as the mechanism of the solid state reaction between MgH2 and AlCl3 has been a mystery so far. Based on SEM, TEM and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analyses, an amorphous intermediate (AlH6)(n) was preferentially formed and recrystallized as a gamma phase at the final stage of the reaction. As a novel finding, this research provides a deep insight into the process and mechanism of this mechanically activated reaction.

Abstract:Effects of Zr addition on the microstructure, mechanical and electrochemical properties of Al-Mn-Si-Zn alloy were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations reveal that, in as-annealled state, the precipitates in the Zr-containing alloy are finer and more dispersive than those in the Zr-free alloy. Whereas, in simulated brazing state, a weaker precipitation is found in the Zr-containing alloy. Tensile testing results indicate that, with Zr additon, comprehensive mechanical properties of the as-annealed alloys could be significantly improved but weakened for the simulated brazing alloy. Electrochemical testing results reveal that, with Zr addition, the corrosion resistance of the as-annealed alloy decreases. However, after the simulated brazing treatment, such a negative effect of Zr element on the corrosion behavior of the alloy could be negligible.

Abstract:The effects of TiB2 and Zr on the microstructure, aging response and mechanical properties of hot-extruded Al–Zn–Mg–Cu based materials were investigated and compared by multi-scale microstructure characterization techniques. The results showed that proper addition of TiB2 particles could refine grain size during solidification, promote dynamic recrystallization during extrusion, and inhibit grain growth during solution treatment. Meanwhile, Zr addition had minor influence on the grain refinement during solidification, but could effectively suppress recrystallization and grain growth compared with the Zr-free alloy. Furthermore, the TiB2 addition could simultaneously enhance the aging kinetics and peak-aged hardness of the materials. Comparatively, Zr addition could also improve the peak-aged hardness with minor effect on the aging kinetics of the materials. Finally, the quench sensitivity, elastic modulus and tensile properties of the materials were compared and studied. Specifically, the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties, and the strengthening mechanisms were discussed in detail.

Abstract:The effects of the addition of the transition metal chloride CrCl3 on the hydriding and dehydriding behavior of Mg–3 wt.% Ni hydrogen storage material were investigated. The characteristics of the ball-milled nanocomposite Mg–3 wt.% Ni–1CrCl3 such as hydriding capacity in the ball-milling process and the kinetics of hydriding/dehydriding were examined. The hydrogen absorption capacity of the composite is greatly increased in the ball-milling process under hydrogen pressure (0.5 MPa). The absorption rate of the composite is fast and the hydrogen storage capacity is more than that of the sample without CrCl3.

Abstract:The magnetron sputtering technique was employed to prepare Zr-alloyed Cu thin films with Zr addition ranging from 0 to 7.0 at.%. Microstructure evolution with Zr doping was characterized by using the transmission electron microscope and atom probe tomography. Plastic deformation characteristics (hardness, strain rate sensitivity and activation volume) of the Cu-Zr alloyed films were examined by using nanoindentation testing. Significant Zr doping effects on the microstructure were clearly uncovered that (i) the Zr segregated at grain boundaries and tuned the grain boundary structure. With increasing the Zr addition, CuZr amorphous particles at grain boundaries (3.0 at.% Zr) and even three dimensional CuZr amorphous grain boundary network (7.0 at.% Zr) were formed; (ii) the grains (size and morphology) and nanotwins were notably influenced by the Zr doping. In particular, the nanotwin thickness was reduced from similar to 25 nm in the pure Cu film down to 5 nm in the Cu-Zr alloyed films. Accompanied with the microstructure evolution, the Cu-Zr thin films displayed hardness and strain rate sensitivity highly sensitive to the Zr doping, i.e., hardness increasing while strain rate sensitivity decreasing with raising the Zr addition. The strengthening and deformation mechanisms were discussed in terms of the microstructure-property relationship. Three regimes were divided within the studied Zr doping range: grain/nanotwin boundary-dominated strengthening mechanism in the regime I of pure Cu film, dislocation nucleation-controlled nanotwin softening mechanism in the regime II of Zr addition <= 3.0 at.%, and intergranular amorphous layer-mediated strengthening mechanism in the regime III of Zr addition up to 7.0 at.%. In addition, the reduction in strain rate sensitivity with Zr doping was quantitatively described by adopting a model that involves the thermally activated partials depinning mechanism based on the effective dislocation segment length. Abstract:The effect of adding different Al contents on the fluidity of Zn-3Mg alloy was investigated. The experimental results show that the addition of 1-4 wt% Al improves the fluidity of the alloy, while higher Al content decreases the fluidity of the alloy. The fluidity of Zn-3Mg-4Al is the best with a 24% improvement over the base alloy. By studying the structure evolution, macroscopic segregation, and melting behavior of Zn-3MgxAl, the Zn-3Mg-xAl fluidity change law and melt flow stopping mechanism were analyzed and discussed.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:The effects of Zr addition on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of extruded Al-Cu-Li-Mn alloy were investigated during heat treatment processing. The recrystallization and grain growth were profoundly inhibited in solid solution-treated (SST) Al-Cu-Li-Mn-Zr alloy (Zr-containing), and massive substructures were retained, which were attributed to the higher Zener pinning pressure provided by Al 3 Zr dispersoids. But, complete recrystallization and considerable grain growth occurred in SST Al-Cu-Li-Mn alloy (Zr-free). Besides, the deformation textures containing Brass and S components were predominant in Zr-containing alloy, which contributed to a higher average Talyor factor ( M ) value. The higher strength behavior in SST Zr-containing alloy mainly originated from the extra Al 3 Zr dispersoids apart from the higher M value and dislocation density. The higher dislocation density and Al 3 Zr dispersoids in Zr-containing alloy promoted the precipitation of T1 phases and narrowed the width of precipitate-free zones (PFZs). Compared with Zr-free alloy, the enhanced combination of good strength and ductility shown in T6-aged Zr-containing alloy was mostly due to the higher T1 phase density and M value, higher dislocation density, and extra Al 3 Zr dispersoids.

Abstract:The composite system Mg–ZrFe1.4Cr0.6 was synthesized by mechanical grinding of Mg mixed with various amounts of ZrFe1.4Cr0.6. The hydrogenation performance of Mg in the composite system was markedly enhanced, especially for Mg-40wt.%ZrFe1.4Cr0.6. SEM, TEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the composite. The full exploitation of the catalytic function of ZrFe1.4Cr0.6 and the nanostructure of Mg were found to be the main reasons for the markedly improved hydriding kinetics of the composite.
Nanostructure Characteristics of Al3Sc1-xZrx Nanoparticles and Their Effects on Mechanical Property and SCC Behavior of Al-Zn-Mg Alloys

Abstract:The Nanostructure characteristics of Al3Sc1-xZrx nanoparticles and their effects on the mechanical properties and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of Al-Zn-Mg alloys were investigated by 3D atom probe analyses, high-angle annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy methods, electron back scattered diffraction techniques, electrochemical measurements, slow strain rate tests and quantitative calculations. The results show that adding small amounts of scandium (0.10 percent by weight) and zirconium into Al-Zn-Mg extrusion bars can precipitate Al3Sc1-xZrx nanoparticles with a number density of (7.80 ± 3.83) × 1021 per cubic meter. Those particles, with a low lattice misfit with matrix (1.14 ± 0.03 percent) and stable core-shell L12-nanostructure in aged Al-Zn-Mg alloys, can increase the yield strength by 161 ± 7 MPa via strong Orowan strengthening (the theoretical calculated value is 159 MPa) and weak Hall-Petch strengthening (the theoretical calculated value is 6 MPa). Moreover, Al3Sc1-xZrx nanoparticles can change the fracture mechanism of alloys in 3.5% NaCl solution from intergranular cracks to transgranular failure, and decrease the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries from 87% to 31%, thus reducing the microchemistry differences around the grain boundaries and anodic dissolution kinetics, and improving intergranular SCC resistance and ductility. This study offers a new approach to the simultaneous improvement in mechanical property and corrosion performance of high strength alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical proprieties of AlCoCrFeNiZrx high-entropy alloy at different Zrcontent was studied through XRD, SEM, DSC and room temperature compression experiment test etc. Results show that: with the increase of Zr content, BCC phase relative increase, Laves phase relative decrease. Thermal analysis show that alloys spinodal decomposition phase transition point at about 1152 degrees C. In a certain range, with Zr content increasing their yield strength is increased. However, with Zr content increasing their fracture strength is decreased. Alloys are typical quasi cleavage fracture.

Abstract:Effect of Sc and Zr addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of as‐cast Al–Li–Cu alloys are investigated. The results show that, a significant grain refinement can be caused by Sc and Zr. The coarse dendritic microstructure is transformed into equiaxed grains after adding Sc and Zr. The refinement can be attributed to the primary particles, Al3(Sc,Zr), of which the orientation is close to that of α‐Al matrix. The primary particles prevent the unsuitable diffusion and act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for α‐Al in the process of solidification. The model for the multi‐layer structure evolution of primary particle is established. Moreover, the mechanical properties of as‐cast Al–Li–Cu–Sc–Zr alloy are affected markedly because of the addition of Sc and Zr. The solid solution strengthening and Hall–Petch strengthening are primary strengthening mechanisms, YS = ΔσHPS + Δσsss + 104 (MPa).
Nanocrystalline Mg and Mg Alloy Powders by Hydriding-Dehydriding Processing

Abstract:The process of mechanically assisted hydriding and subsequent thermal dehydriding was proposed to produce nanocrystalline Mg and Mg alloy powders using pure Mg and Mg-5.5%Zn-0.6%Zr (mass fraction) (ZK60 Mg) alloy as the starting materal. The hydriding was achieved by room-temperature reaction milling in hydrogen. The dehydriding was carried out by vacuum annealing of the as-milled powders. The microstructure and morphology of both the as-milled and subsequently dehydrided powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results show that, by reaction milling in hydrogen, both Mg and ZK60 Mg alloy can be fully hydrided to form nanocrystalline MgH2 with an average grain size of 10 nm. After subsequent thermal dehydriding at 300 °C, the MgH2 can be turned into Mg again, and the newly formed Mg grains are nanocrystallines, with an average grain size of 25 nm.

Abstract:The addition of trace mirco alloying element to aluminum alloys is one of those effective means to improve the synthesis properties of the aluminum alloys.Effect of minor addition of Zirconium on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-12Mg alloy were investigated.The results show that the optimal effect is obtained with 0.2wt% Zr addition in the alloy.The grain distributes uniformly.Part of dendrite of the cast structure becomes fine isometric crystal.The size is about 40μm.The tensile strength and percentage elongation increase by 19% and 46% respectively.

Abstract:The effects of adding the alloy element Sc to Al alloys on strengthening, recrystallization and modification of the grain microstructure have been investigated. The combination of Sc and Zr alloying not only produces a remarkable synergistic effect of inhibition of recrystallization and refinement of grain size but also substantially reduce the amount of high-cost additional Sc. In this work, the microstructures and corrosion behavior of a new type of Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-Zr alloy with Sc/Zr ratio of 1/2 were investigated.The experimental results showed that the Sc and Zr additions to Al-Cu-Mg alloy could strongly inhibit recrystallization, refine grain size, impede the segregation of Cu element along the grain boundary and increase the spacing of grain boundary precipitates. In addition, adding Sc and Zr to Al-Cu-Mg alloy effectively restricts the corrosion mechanism conversion associated with Al2 Cu Mg particles, which resulted in the change of the cross-section morphology of inter-granular corrosion from an undercutting to an elliptical shape. The susceptibility to inter-granular corrosion was significantly decreased with increasing Sc and Zr additions to the Al-Cu-Mg alloy. The relationships between microstructures evolution and inter-granular corrosion mechanism of Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys were also discussed.
