Abstract:The control over the size and location of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is achieved in one step through a cooperative in situ metal precursor incorporation and on-site moderate reduction process, which is operated by a temperature control program. The choice of operation temperatures is based on the MOF assembly temperature (T-1), and an elevated temperature (T-2) to elicit the reducibility of DMF solvent to fabricate MNPs. Such a rational design could effectively introduce metal precursors into the pores of MOFs and on-site moderately reduce the embedded metal ions to generate tiny MNPs by the penetrated DMF, which could not be achieved by a quick heating process. The proposed methodology has been successfully applied to the one-step fabrication of ultrafine Pd NPs selectively encapsulated inside the pores of UiO-67 without any external reducing agents. The obtained Pd-in-UiO-67 shows superior catalytic activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of styrene even at room temperature and atmospheric pressure of H-2.

Abstract:Surfactant-free tiny Pt clusters were successfully encapsulated within MOFs with controllable size and spatial distribution by a novel kinetically modulated one-step strategy. Our synthesis relies on the rational manipulation of the reduction rate of Pt ions and/or the growth rate of MOFs by using H-2 as assistant reducing agent and/or acetic acid as MOF-formation modulator. The as-prepared Pt@MOF core-shell composites exhibited exceedingly high activity and excellent selectivity in the oxidation of alcohols as a result of the ultrafine clean Pt clusters, as well as interesting molecular-sieving effects derived from the outer platinum-free MOF shell.

Abstract:While metal nanoparticles (NPs) have shown great promising applications as heterogeneous catalysts, their agglomeration caused by thermodynamic instability is detrimental to the catalytic performance. To tackle this hurdle, we successfully prepared a functional and stable porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF), PCN-224-RT, as a host for encapsulating metal nanoparticles by direct stirring at room temperature. As a result, Pt@PCN-224-RT composites with well-dispersed Pt NPs can be constructed by introducing pre-synthesized Pt NPs into the precursor solution of PCN-224-RT. Of note, the rapid and simple stirring method in this work is more in line with the requirements of environmental friendly and industrialization compared with traditional solvothermal methods.

Abstract:Fabrication and modification of few-atom metal clusters and even single atoms in the pores of porous materials for catalysis are highly desired from an atom-efficiency aspect but remain a great challenge. Herein, we propose a facile and efficient strategy for the encapsulation of C-N-decorated Pd sub-nanoclusters (MSNCs)/single atoms (SAs) into MOFs by the confined thermolysis of Pd-based metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) in MOF pores. The obtained hybrids contained both Pd MSNCs (∼0.8 nm) and Pd SAs, which were stabilized by the in situ formed C-N fragments and the confinement effect of MOF pores. Benefiting from the highly exposed Pd atoms and synergistic effect between Pd and C-N fragments, these catalysts exhibited extremely high catalytic activity and stability in various important chemical processes, making them comparable to the most active Pd-based catalysts reported in the literature even under milder reaction conditions. Considering the high tunability of MOPs, this proposed strategy might provide a new toolbox for enriching the family of decorated MSNC/SA catalysts.

Abstract:A novel synthesis strategy is developed to encapsulate palladium precursors through ligand design prior to MOF assembly, achieving uniformly distributed palladium NPs inside the cavities of MOFs. This strategy can avoid the different diffusion resistance between external and internal surfaces, and thus allow metal precursors to be easily deposited into the pores and evenly distributed within MOF networks. The embedded Pd NPs exhibited excellent shape-selectivity in olefin hydrogenation, as well as high catalytic efficiencies in aerobic oxidation of alcohols and reduction of nitrobenzene, showing significantly enhanced catalytic activity and stability as compared to those synthesized using a traditional impregnation method. The superior catalytic activity and stability came from the synergetic effects of nano-confinement and electron-donation offered by the MOF framework.

Abstract:A robust nanocasting approach is demonstrated to synthesize encapsulated nanoparticles in metal oxides. First, colloidal nanoparticles are encapsulated in a porous polymer matrix. Then, metal oxide precursor is infiltrated, and materials are calcined to form a porous metal oxide network. Various combinations of nanoparticles encapsulated in metal oxide materials can be synthesized, and their surface area and porosity can be tuned using this method. Encapsulation of metal nanoparticles within oxide materials has been shown as an effective strategy to improve activity, selectivity, and stability in several catalytic applications. Several approaches have been proposed to encapsulate nanoparticles, such as forming core‐shell structures, growing ordered structures (zeolites or metal‐organic frameworks) on nanoparticles, or directly depositing support materials on nanoparticles. Here, a general nanocasting method is demonstrated that can produce diverse encapsulated metal@oxide structures with different compositions (Pt, Pd, Rh) and multiple types of oxides (Al2O3, Al2O3‐CeO2, ZrO2, ZnZrOx, In2O3, Mn2O3, TiO2) while controlling the size and dispersion of nanoparticles and the porous structure of the oxide. Metal@polymer structures are first prepared, and then the oxide precursor is infiltrated into such structures and the resulting material is calcined to form the metal@oxide structures. Most Pt@oxides catalysts show similar catalytic activity, demonstrating the availability of surface Pt sites in the encapsulated structures. However, the Pt@Mn2O3 sample showed much higher CO oxidation activity, while also being stable under aging conditions. This work demonstrated a robust nanocasting method to synthesize metal@oxide structures, which can be utilized in catalysis to finely tune metal‐oxide interfaces.

A One-Pot Strategy for Anchoring Single Pt Atoms in MOFs with Diverse Coordination Environments

Abstract:It is challenging to precisely control and identify the coordination environment of single-atom active sites due to non-uniform substrate surfaces. This complicates the task of bridging experimental and theoretical investigations. Here, using a one-pot method, we immobilized single Pt(0) atoms within various terephthalic acid-based metal-organic frameworks, thereby constructing well-defined active sites with varied organic coordination environments. In the isoreticular metal-organic framework UiO-6-X (-X = -H, -NH2, -Br and -I), influenced by the functional groups, the resulting Pt1 sites exhibited distinct catalytic activities for hydrogenation and sintering resistance. Mechanistic studies reveal that this is related to alteration of the electronic state of Pt centres and the adsorption behaviour of intermediates on the Pt sites. Pt1@UiO-66-Br gave the highest activity and excellent thermal stability, with no metal agglomeration in H2 up to 300 degrees C. Our work introduces a strategy for the precise environmental modification of isolated metal atoms for better catalytic performance. Preventing the co-existence of single-atom active sites with differing coordination environments is challenging. Here the coordination environment of single Pt(0) atoms is precisely controlled within terephthalic acid-based metal-organic frameworks, resulting in distinct catalytic activities and sintering resistance.

Abstract:Controllable integration of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is of significant importance in many applications owing to their unique properties. In situ efficient synthesis of metal NPs with different structures into MOFs is a great challenge. Herein, we report the nanostructures of octahedron and flower Pt-Cu frame@HKUST-1, which is successfully synthesized under a microwave irradiation method in only 30 min. In this study, Pt-Cu alloys, serving as the self template, are synthesized first, followed by the HKUST-1 shell growing in situ via the consumption of Cu-0. As multifunctional catalysts, the core shell structures exhibit excellent performance for the hydrogenation of 1-hexene. Notably, octahedron Pt-Cu frame@HKUST-1 displays high turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) of 1004 and 200811 h(-1), respectively. Thanks to the protective effect of HKUST-1, the octahedron Pt-Cu frame@HKUST-1 can be recycled for at least four runs without serious loss of activity and obvious aggregation of Pt-Cu alloys. Furthermore, the size selective catalysis is also well-demonstrated by choosing 1-hexene, cis-cyclooctene, and styrene as substrates.

Abstract:A mechanochemical synthesis approach to encapsulate atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) in reticular frameworks in a controlled manner is proposed. This method significantly broadens the range of APNC@framework composites, facilitating the on‐demand construction and regulation of component‐specific nanocomposites. The combination of atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) and reticular frameworks is promising for generating component‐specific nanocomposites with emergent properties. However, traditional liquid‐phase synthesis often hampers this potential by damaging APNCs and limiting combination diversity. Here, mechanochemical synthesis to explore the encapsulation of diverse oil‐ and water‐soluble APNCs within various reticular frameworks is employed, establishing a database of 21 unique APNC−framework combinations, including metal−organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent−organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen−bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), and multivariate MOFs. These framework coatings not only spatially immobilize APNCs but also secure their structures, preventing aggregation and degradation while enhancing stability and activity. Encapsulating Au25 in HOFs resulted in a remarkable 315‐fold increase in catalytic activity compared to Au25 homogeneous catalyst, highlighting the framework's crucial role in catalytic enhancement. The mechanochemical synthesis strategy facilitates tailored support screening, catering to specific needs, and shows promise for developing multifunctional systems, including enzyme−APNC@frameworks material for cascade reactions.

Abstract:Highly monodisperse metal-organic framework (MOF) hollow nanospheres have been rationally synthesized using monodisperse polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles as templates through a versatile step-by-step self-assembly strategy. The structure and composition of the hollow MOF-based nanostructures could be facilely tuned by choosing different framework building blocks (i.e. metal ions and polyfunctional organic ligands) and the hollow MOF shell thickness could also be easily controlled by tuning the number of growth cycles of the PS@ MOF core-shell structures.

Abstract:A series of tetra‐, hexa‐, and octa‐topic carboxylic acids‐based Zr‐MOFs are successfully constructed via the combination of reticular chemistry and in situ "one‐pot" strategy. Reticular chemistry guided structural analysis provides the molecular skeleton for target MOFs, then in situ "one‐pot" offers the approach to synthesizing these organic linkers and sequentially constructing MOFs with specific structures and properties. The establishment of reticular chemistry has significantly facilitated the development of porous materials, especially for metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). On the other hand, as an alternative approach, in situ "one‐pot" strategy has been explored as a promising approach to constructing MOFs, in which the synthesis of organic linkers and the sequential construction of MOFs are integrated into one solvothermal condition. This strategy can efficiently avoid the limitations faced in the traditional construction method, such as time‐consuming organic synthesis and multiple separation and purification. Herein, inspired by the reaction of aldehydes and o‐phenylenediamine and deep structural analysis of UiO‐68, a series of tetra‐, hexa‐, and octa‐topic carboxylic acids are synthesized using 2′,3′‐diamino‐[1,1′:4′,1′"‐terphenyl]‐4,4′"‐dicarboxylic acid and di‐, tri‐, and tetra‐topic aldehydes as precursor. Then nine multicarboxylate‐based zirconium MOFs (Zr‐MOFs) are successfully constructed via the combination of reticular chemistry and in situ "one‐pot" strategy. The resultant Zr‐MOFs can be regarded as the partial face decoration of UiO‐68. More importantly, the emission properties of resultant Zr‐MOFs can be well controlled using aldehydes with tunable electronic structures. This work provides a new path to rational design and construction of porous materials with specific structures guided by reticular chemistry and conducted using in situ "one‐pot" strategy.

Abstract:The synthesis of ultrafine, uniform, well-dispersed functional nanoparticles (NPs) under mild conditions in a controlled manner remains a great challenge. In biological systems, a well-defined biomineralization process is exploited, in which the control over NPs' size, shape and distribution is temporally and spatially regulated by a variety of biomolecules in a confined space. Inspired by this, we embedded proteins into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and explored a novel approach to synthesize metallic NPs by taking the synergy of protein-induced biomineralization process and space-confined effect of MOFs. The generation and growth of ultrafine metal NPs (Ag or Au) was induced by the entrapped lysozyme molecules and confined by the ZIF-8 pores. Due to the narrow size distribution and homogeneous spatial distribution of metal NPs, the as-synthesized NPs exhibit remarkably elevated catalytic activity. These findings demonstrate that MOFs can be loaded with specific proteins to selectively deposit inorganic NPs via biomimetic mineralization and these novel kinds of nanohybrid materials may find applications in catalysis, sensing and optics.

Abstract:Selenium is an essential trace element for the human body, which widely exists in nature and has indispensable applications in the field of photoelectric materials, energy materials, and medical materials. Bringing selenium into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious strategy to endow MOFs with some special properties, which strongly broaden the applications of MOFs. Redox‐active metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with switchable physicochemical properties depending on their redox state, are widely used in catalysis, selective separation, and electrochemical sensing. However, the complex fabrication process limits the applications. Herein, a post‐synthetic modification strategy is proposed to prepare redox‐active MOFs by covalent grafting organic selenium compounds. The selenium moieties can reduce metal salt to in situ generate metal nanoparticles (MNPs) without an external reducing agent, and also act as anchors to stabilize the generated MNPs. As a proof of concept, two kinds of MOFs are selected to prepare redox‐active MOFs‐Se and further fabricate MNPs@MOFs composite materials. With controllable confinement of the MNPs, the MNPs@MOFs composite show noteworthy photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Recognized as one of the important active species involved in various reactions, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) shows potential applications in chemical, biological, and environmental related fields. However, the con-trolled capture and release of 1 O 2 are still facing huge challenges due to its short lifetime and high re-activity. Herein, a framework-interpenetration tuning strategy was applied on a metal-organic framework (MOF) that aiming to improve the capture and release rate of 1 O 2 . The porosity of the MOF was remark-ably enhanced with the structural evolution from seven-fold (termed NKM-181) to six-fold interpene-tration (termed NKM-182), and the active anthracene sites became much more accessible. Such drastic process can be achieved as simple as exchanging the primitive MOF in selected solvent and occurred surprisingly as single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. Also, additionally owing to the unblocked regular channels, NKM-182 shown significantly improved 1 O 2 trapping and releasing rates compared to that of in NKM-181. This work demonstrates an unprecedented regulation of 1 O 2 capture and release process, along with achieving the highest 1 O 2 capture and release rate among reported porous materi-als. Furthermore, the obtained endoperoxides with 1 O 2 loaded (termed EPO-NKM-181 and EPO-NKM-182) can be used as a high efficiency smart material for anti-fake application (c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Chemical Society and Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

Abstract:The introduction of single or multiple heterometal atoms into metal nanoparticles is a well-known strategy for altering their structures (compositions) and properties. However, surface single nonmetal atom doping is challenging and rarely reported. For the first time, we have developed synthetic methods, realizing "surgery"-like, successive surface single nonmetal atom doping, replacement, and addition for ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (metal nanoclusters, NCs), and successfully synthesized and characterized three novel bcc metal NCs Au38I(S-Adm)19, Au38S(S-Adm)20, and Au38IS(S-Adm)19 (S-Adm: 1-adamantanethiolate). The influences of single nonmetal atom replacement and addition on the NC structure and optical properties (including absorption and photoluminescence) were carefully investigated, providing insights into the structure (composition)-property correlation. Furthermore, a bottom-up method was employed to construct a metal-organic framework (MOF) on the NC surface, which did not essentially alter the metal NC structure but led to the partial release of surface ligands and stimulated metal NC activity for catalyzing p-nitrophenol reduction. Furthermore, surface MOF construction enhanced NC stability and water solubility, providing another dimension for tunning NC catalytic activity by modifying MOF functional groups.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently known as novel precursors in nanomaterial synthesis.To understand the mechanism behind the phase transformation in atomic scale, we apply in-situ X-ray pair-distribution analysis to monitor the whole process, from distortion, destabilization, partial reduction, to the eventual nanoparticle formation and defect evolution of a series of bimetallic MOFs PCN-250.These MOFs with different trimeric node composition (Fe3, Fe2Co, and Fe2Ni) allow us to control the structure, chemistry, and defect of resulting nanoparticles.Notably, we found selective reduction of Ni from the node with defect-rich frameworks retained.This can be a new route for future MOFs crystal engineering.Figure 1.The structure of MOFs and resulting nanophases are tracked through PDF analysis.
