Abstract:Core and conal emission beams of radio pulsars have been identified observationally (Rankin 1983,1993; Lyne and Manchester 1988), In the inner gap model (Ruderman and Sutherland 1975, hereafter RS75), the gap continually breaks down (sparking) by forming electron-positron pairs on a time scale of a few microseconds (RS75). This makes a large amplitude low frequency wave to be produced and which would be scattered by relativistic particles moving out from the gap. Under this assumption, Qiao (1988a,1992) presented an Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) model for both core and conal emissions. This paper presented a development of the model. Retardation and aberration effects due to different radiation components emitted from different heights are considered. The luminosity of pulsar radio emission via the ICS process is discussed. Coherent emission by bunches of particles is adopted and which is adequate to explain pulsar radiation. The theoretical results are in agreement with observations very well.

Abstract:We review our high-time-resolution radio observations of the Crab pulsar and compare our data to a variety of models for the emission physics. The Main Pulse and the Low-Frequency Interpulse come from regions somewhere in the high-altitude emission zones (caustics) that also produce pulsed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Although no emission model can fully explain these two components, the most likely models suggest they arise from a combination of beam-driven instabilities, coherent charge bunching and strong electromagnetic turbulence. Because the radio power fluctuates on a wide range of timescales, we know the emission zones are patchy and dynamic. It is tempting to invoke unsteady pair creation in high-altitude gaps as source of the variability, but current pair cascade models cannot explain the densities required by any of the likely models. It is harder to account for the mysterious High-Frequency Interpulse. We understand neither its origin within the magnetosphere nor the striking emission bands in its dynamic spectrum. The most promising models are based on analogies with solar zebra bands, but they require unusual plasma structures which are not part of our standard picture of the magnetosphere. We argue that radio observations can reveal much about the upper magnetosphere, but work is required before the models can address all of the data.

Abstract:The inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model of the pulsars are reviewed,including the inner gap structure involving the ICS process in the polar cap region,the basic idea of the ICS model for pulsar radio emission,an interpretation of the various observational data in terms of the ICS model,such as the radio emission beams (especially the core and the two conal components),the polarization position angle jumps,and the sense reversing of the circular polarizations.It is shown that the ICS model is a successful model in understanding the magnetospheric structures and the radiation mechanisms of pulsars.

Abstract:We present a phase-dependent analysis of the polarized emission from the Crab pulsar based on three sets of observations by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We found that a phenomenological model involving a simple linear transformation of the Stokes parameters adequately describes the IXPE data. This model enables us to establish, for the first time, a connection between the polarization properties of the Crab pulsar in the optical and soft X-ray bands, suggesting a common underlying emission mechanism across these bands. In particular, the phase-dependent polarization degree in X-rays for pure pulsar emission shows similar features but is reduced by a factor $\approx (0.46-0.56)$ compared to the optical band, implying an energy-dependent polarized emission. In addition, using this model, we study the polarization angle swing in X-rays and identify a potentially variable phase-shift at the interpulse relative to the optical band, alongside a phase-shift marginally consistent with zero persisting at the main pulse. While the variability presents a new challenge for theoretical interpretation, our findings suggest that the emission mechanism for the main pulse is likely located far from the neutron star surface, perhaps near or beyond the light cylinder, rather than operating in the inner magnetosphere where vacuum birefringence is expected to be at work. Ignoring the phase-shifts would result in identical phase-dependent polarization angles between the optical and X-ray bands for pure pulsar emission.

Abstract:The Crab pulsar is a quite young, famous pulsar that radiates multi-wavelength pulsed photons. The latest detection of GeV and TeV pulsed emission with an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio, supplied by the powerful telescopes Fermi, MAGIC, and VERITAS, challenges the current popular pulsar models, and can be a valuable discriminator to justify the pulsar high-energy-emission models. Our work is divided into two steps. First, taking reasonable parameters (the magnetic inclination angle alpha = 45 degrees and the view angle zeta = 63 degrees), we use the latest high-energy data to calculate radio, X-ray, gamma-ray, and TeV light curves from a geometric view to obtain crucial information on emission locations. Second, we calculate the phase-averaged spectrum and phase-resolved spectra for the Crab pulsar and take a theoretical justification from a physical view for the emission properties as found in the first step. It is found that a Gaussian emissivity distribution with the peak emission near the null charge surface in the so-called annular gap (AG) region gives the best modeled light curves. The pulsed radio, X-ray, gamma-ray, and TeV emission are mainly generated from the emission of primary particles or secondary particles with different emission mechanisms in the nearly similar region of the AG located in the only magnetic pole, which leads to the nearly "phase-aligned" multi-wavelength light curves. The emission of peak 1 and peak 2 originates from the AG region near the null charge surface, while the emission of the bridge primarily originates from the core gap (CG) region. The charged particles cannot co-rotate with the pulsar and escape from the magnetosphere, which determines the original flowing primary particles. The acceleration electric field and potential in the AG and CG are huge enough and are in the several tens of neutron star radii. Thus, the primary particles are accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies and produce numerous secondary particles (pairs) in the inner regions of the AG and CG. We emphasize that there are mainly two types of pairs: one is curvature-radiation induced (CR-induced) and the other is inverse-Compton-scattering induced (ICS-induced). The phase-averaged spectrum and phase-resolved spectra from soft X-ray to TeV bands are produced by four components: synchrotron radiation from CR- and ICS-induced pairs dominates the X-ray band to soft gamma-ray band (100 eV to 10 MeV); curvature radiation and synchrotron radiation from the primary particles mainly contribute to the gamma-ray band (10 MeV to similar to 20 GeV); ICS from the pairs significantly contributes to the TeV gamma-ray band (similar to 20-400 GeV). The multi-wavelength pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar can be well modeled with the AG and CG model. To distinguish our single magnetic pole model from two-pole models, the convincing values of the magnetic inclination angle and the viewing angle will play a key role.

Abstract:The shapes of pulse profiles, especially their variations with respect to observing frequencies, are very important to understand emission mechanisms of pulsars. However, no previous attempt has been made to interpret their complicated phenomenology. In this paper, we present theoretical simulations for the integrated pulse profiles and their frequency evolution within the framework of the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model proposed by Qiao (1988) and Qiao & Lin (1998). Using the phase positions of the pulse components predicted by the "beam-frequency figure" of the ICS model, we present Gaussian fits to the multi-frequency pulse profiles for some pulsars. It is shown that the model can reproduce various types of the frequency evolution behaviors of pulse profiles observed.

In this paper the effort for a joint model is presented. The inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and a second acceleration process near the null charge surface are involved to account for the radio and the gama-ray emission, respectively. Abstract:A coherent inverse Compton scattering (ICS) mechanism is used to get polarization properties of radio emission of pulsars. It is found that particles moving along a ring with radius theta' = 1/(root 3 gamma) simultaneously contribute via coherent ICS. The circular polarization can be easily gotten as well as linear polarization at the same time. Our theory releases the upper limit of Lorentz factor gamma less than or equal to 20 put by curvature radiation, and gamma may take several thousands in ICS. Furthermore, subpulse position angles do take diverse values, while mean position angle is associated with the projection of magnetic field lines. So it is natural to get commonly-seen S-shaped swing of mean position angles. Finally we present a simulation for position angle rotation, linear polarization, circular polarization of PSR1508+55, which means that the coherent ICS may be responsible for radio emission.
Pulse Profiles, Spectra and Polarization Characteristics of Non-Thermal Emissions from the Crab-Like Pulsars

Abstract:We discuss non-thermal emission mechanism of the Crab-like pulsars with both a two-dimensional electrodynamical study and a three-dimensional model. We investigate the emission process in the outer gap accelerator. In the two-dimensional electrodynamical study, we solve the Poisson equation of the accelerating electric field in the outer gap and the equation of motion of the primary particles with the synchrotron and the curvature radiation process and the pair-creation process. We show a solved gap structure which produces a consistent gamma-ray spectrum with EGRET observation. Based on the two-dimensional model, we conduct a three-dimensional emission model to calculate the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton processes of the secondary pairs produced outside the outer gap. We calculate the pulse profiles, the phase-resolved spectra and the polarization characteristics in optical to $\gamma$-ray bands to compare the observation of the Crab pulsar and PSR B0540-69. For the Crab pulsar, we find that the outer gap geometry extending from near the stellar surface to near the light cylinder produces a complex morphology change of the pulse profiles as a function of the photon energy. This predicted morphology change is quite similar with that of the observations. The calculated phase-resolved spectra are consistent with the data through optical to the $\gamma$-ray bands. We demonstrate that the 10$\sim$20 % of the polarization degree in the optical emissions from the Crab pulsar and the Vela pulsar are explained by the synchrotron emissions with the particle gyration motion.

Abstract:The radiation of pulsars have been observed for many years. A few pulsars are discovered to have both radio and gamma-ray emission. Many models on pulsar radiation have been developed, but so far we are still lacking an elaborate model which can explain the emission from radio to gamma-rays in detail. In this paper we present a joint model for radio and gamma-ray emission, in which both the dominate emission mechanisms are inverse Compton scattering. The pulse profiles at radio and gamma-ray bands are reproduced for the Crab-like, Vela-like and Geminga-like pulsars, in good agreement with observations.

Abstract:Multiwavelength observation is an effective way to test and constrain theoretical models of pulsars. X-ray observations reveal that the light curve of the Crab pulsar has two sharp peaks, with a phase separation of similar to 0.4 spin periods between its first peak (P1) and second peak (P2). Using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) of China, we studied eight-wavelength (from 11 keV to 250 keV) X-ray light curves of the Crab pulsar and found that the phase separation has no significant trend with the energy, while the total intensity ratios of the P2 and bridge emission components to the P1 component have a significant increasing trend with increasing energy. We used three-dimensional magnetospheric models for the core gap (CG) and annular gap (AG) to simulate the eight-wavelength X-ray light curves. It was found that the P1, P2 and bridge emission components at each band can be well reproduced by the two models and that the P1 and P2 emissions could be generated in the AG region, whereas the bridge emission could be generated in the CG region.

Abstract:Abstract We analyze the energy dependence of the X-ray pulse profile and the phase-resolved spectra (PRS) of the Crab pulsar using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). We parameterize the pulse profiles and quantify the evolution of these parameters in the broad energy band of 0.4–250 keV. A log-parabola function is used to fit the PRS in 2–250 keV, and the curvature of the spectrum, i.e., the evolution of the photon index with energy, as represented by the parameter β of the log-parabola model, also changes with phase. The relation of β and phase has two turning points slightly later than those of the pulse intensity profile, where the values of β are the lowest, suggesting that the energy-loss rate of the particles is the lowest in the corresponding regions. A three-segment broken-power-law model is also used to fit those PRS. The differences between the hard spectral index and the soft ones have a distribution similar to that of β , confirming the fitting results of the log-parabola model, while the broken energies are generally higher in the region bridging the two pulses. We find anticorrelations between the spectral indices and the curvature of the log-parabola model fitting and a similar anticorrelation between the spectral indices and broken energies of the broken-power-law model fitting, suggesting a scenario where the highest-energy particles are produced in regions where radiation energy loss is strongest.

Abstract:The Crab pulsar has striking radio emission properties, with the two dominant pulse components—the main pulse and the interpulse—consisting entirely of giant pulses. The emission is scattered in both the Crab Nebula and the interstellar medium, causing multipath propagation and thus scintillation. We study the scintillation of the Crab's giant pulses using phased Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data at 1668 MHz. We find that giant pulse spectra correlate at only ~2%, much lower than the one-third correlation expected from a randomized signal imparted with the same impulse response function. In addition, we find that the main pulse and the interpulse appear to scintillate differently; the 2D cross-correlation of scintillation between the interpulse and main pulse has a lower amplitude and is wider in time and frequency delay than the 2D autocorrelation of the main pulses. These lines of evidence suggest that the giant pulse emission regions are extended, and that the main pulse and interpulse arise in physically distinct regions that are resolved by the scattering screen. Assuming the scattering takes place in the nebular filaments, the emission regions are of order a light-cylinder radius, as projected on the sky. With further very long baseline interferometry and multifrequency data, it may be possible to measure the distance to the scattering screens, the size of giant pulse emission regions, and the physical separation between the pulse components.
Damage Spreading at the Corner Filling Transition in the two-dimensional Ising Model

Abstract:The propagation of damage on the square Ising lattice with a corner geometry is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that, just at $T=T_f (h)$ (critical temperature of the filling transition) the damage initially propagates along the interface of the competing domains, according to a power law given by $D(t) \propto t^{\eta}$. The value obtained for the dynamic exponent ($\eta^{*} = 0.89(1)$) is in agreement with that corresponding to the wetting transition in the slit geometry (Abraham Model) given by $\eta^{WT} = 0.91(1)$. However, for later times the propagation crosses to a new regime such as $\eta^{**} = 0.40 \pm 0.02$, which is due to the propagation of the damage into the bulk of the magnetic domains. This result can be understood due to the constraints imposed to the propagation of damage by the corner geometry of the system that cause healing at the corners where the interface is attached.

Implications of the X-Ray Properties of Pulsar Nebulae

Abstract:A plausible model for the Crab Nebula is one in which a particle dominated, highly relativistic wind from the pulsar passes through a shock front in which the particles attain a power law energy distribution. The electrons and positrons lose energy radiating synchrotron emission. Here, a one zone version of the model is developed and applied to observations of X-ray pulsar nebulae. Efficient conversion of pulsar spin-down power to X-ray luminosity is expected if the observed electrons are in the synchrotron cooling regime and their energy spectrum is similar to that in the Crab Nebula. In this case, the relation between X-ray luminosity and pulsar spin-down power depends only weakly on the model parameters. The dependence is stronger for a steeper particle spectrum, as appears to be present in N157B, and the efficiency of X-ray production can be lower. If the electrons are not in the cooling regime, the X-ray luminosity can be low, as appears to be the case for the compact nebula around the Vela pulsar. Slow cooling is likely to be caused by a sub-equipartition magnetic field in the radiating region. Observations can place constraints on the uncertain physics of relativistic MHD shocks. The model is related to those developed for gamma-ray burst afterglows.

Abstract:We outline a model of the Crab Pulsar Wind Nebula with two different populations of synchrotron emitting particles, arising from two different acceleration mechanisms: (i) Component-I due to Fermi-I acceleration at the equatorial portion of the termination shock, with particle spectral index $p_I \approx 2.2$ above the injection break corresponding to $\gamma_{wind} \sigma_{wind} \sim 10^5$, peaking in the UV ($\gamma_{wind} \sim 10^2$ is the bulk Lorentz factor of the wind, $\sigma _{wind} \sim 10^3$ is wind magnetization); (ii) Component-II due to acceleration at reconnection layers in the bulk of the turbulent Nebula, with particle index $p_{II} \approx 1.6$. The model requires relatively slow but highly magnetized wind. For both components the overall cooling break is in the infra-red at $\sim 0.01$ eV, so that the Component-I is in the fast cooling regime (cooling frequency below the peak frequency). In the optical band Component-I produces emission with the cooling spectral index of $\alpha_o \approx 0.5$, softening towards the edges due to radiative losses. Above the cooling break, in the optical, UV and X-rays, Component-I mostly overwhelms Component-II. We hypothesize that acceleration at large-scale current sheets in the turbulent nebula (Component-II) extends to the synchrotron burn-off limit of $\epsilon_s \approx 100$ MeV. Thus in our model acceleration in turbulent reconnection (Component-II) can produce both hard radio spectra and occasional gamma-ray flares. This model may be applicable to a broader class of high energy astrophysical objects, like AGNe and GRB jets, where often radio electrons form a different population from the high energy electrons.
Synchrotron Self-Compton Emission from the Crab and Other Pulsars

Abstract:Results of a simulation of synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) emission from a rotation-powered pulsar are presented. The radiating particles are assumed to be both accelerated primary electrons and a spectrum of electron-positron pairs produced in cascades near the polar cap. They follow trajectories in a slot gap using 3D force-free magnetic field geometry, gaining pitch angles through resonant cyclotron absorption of radio photons, radiating and scattering synchrotron emission at high altitudes out to and beyond the light cylinder. Full angular dependence of the synchrotron photon density is simulated in the scattering and all processes are treated in the inertial observer frame. Spectra for the Crab and Vela pulsars as well as two energetic millisecond pulsars, B1821-24 and B1937+21 are simulated using this model. The simulation of the Crab pulsar radiation can reproduce both the flux level and the shape of the observed optical to hard X-ray emission assuming a pair multiplicity of $M_+ = 3 \times 10^5$, as well as the very-high-energy emission above 50 GeV detected by MAGIC and VERITAS, with both the synchrotron and SSC components reflecting the shape of the pair spectrum. Simulations of Vela, B1821$-$24 and B1937+21, for $M_+$ up to $10^5$, do not produce pair SSC emission that is detectable by current telescopes, indicating that only Crab-like pulsars produce significant SSC components. The pair synchrotron emission matches the observed X-ray spectrum of the millisecond pulsars and the predicted peak of this emission at 1 - 10 MeV would be detectable with planned Compton telescopes.

Stacked clusters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules

Abstract:Clusters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are modelled using explicit all-atom potentials using a rigid body approximation. The PAH's considered range from pyrene (C10H8) to circumcoronene (C54H18), and clusters containing between 2 and 32 molecules are investigated. In addition to the usual repulsion-dispersion interactions, electrostatic point-charge interactions are incorporated, as obtained from density functional theory calculations. The general electrostatic distribution in neutral or singly charged PAH's is reproduced well using a fluctuating charges analysis, which provides an adequate description of the multipolar distribution. Global optimization is performed using a variety of methods, including basin-hopping and parallel tempering Monte Carlo. We find evidence that stacking the PAH molecules generally yields the most stable motif. A structural transition between one-dimensional stacks and three-dimensional shapes built from mutiple stacks is observed at larger sizes, and the threshold for this transition increases with the size of the monomer. Larger aggregates seem to evolve toward the packing observed for benzene in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bulk.Difficulties" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> met in optimizing these clusters are analysed in terms of the strong anisotropy of the molecules.
