Abstract:Multiple ion-doped lithium manganese oxides LiCr x Ni x Mn 2-2x O 4-z F z (0 < x ≤ 0.25, z = 0.05, 0.1) with a spinel structure and space group Fd 3 m were prepared by using the co-precipitation procedure carried out in water–alcohol solvent using adipic acid as the chelating agent. The electrochemical measurements indicated that the charge/discharge capacities of the samples prepared at 600 °C are higher than that of the treatment at 800 °C or microwave heating. The capacitance-voltage (CV) curves of LiCr x Ni x Mn 2-2x O 4-z F z (0 < x ≤ 0.25, z = 0.05, 0.1) showed that when x ≤ 0.1, the samples had two reduction–oxidation peaks at 4.0 to 4.2-V region, whereas when x > 0.1, the samples had only one reduction–oxidation peak at 4.0- to 4.2-V region in CV measurements and could offer more stable voltage plateau in a 4-V region and also had stable electrical conductivity after 20 cycles. Another reduction–oxidation peak appeared in 4.6-4.8-V region (Ni 2+ –Ni 4+ reduction–oxidation peaks); this suggests that the LiCr x Ni x Mn 2-2x O 4-z F z (0.1 < x ≤ 0.25, z = 0.05, 0.1) cathode material could offer 4.6 to 4.8-V charge/discharge plateaus, and its specific capacity increases with increasing Ni 2+ . The impedance measurements of the cell proved that the F − anion doped can not only prevent Mn 3+ from disproportion but also can prevent the passivation film from forming and can help keep stable the cell’s electrical properties. The LiCr 0.05 Ni 0.05 Mn 1.9 O 3.9 F 0.1 sintered at 600 °C shows the best cycle performance and the largest capacity in all prepared samples; its first discharge capacity is 120 mAh/g, and the discharge capacity loses only 1.78

Abstract:Aluminum doped LiNiO2 cathode materials are synthesized by using Raney nickel as the starting material. The structure and composition are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with elemental mapping. The lithium deficiency is analyzed by Rieveld refinement. The initial capacity and retention of capacity are correlated to the lithium deficiency of the resulting cathode material. Using strong oxidant of Li2O2 in the synthesis results in materials with improved electrochemical cyclability. The improvement is related to the diminishing of lithium deficiency in strong oxidizing synthesis conditions. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Olivine-structured LiMnPO4 is one of the cathode materials with great application prospects for lithium-ion batteries in that it possesses the characteristics of abundant raw materials, low price, stable structure, high energy density, and good cycling stability. In this paper, the electronic structure of LiMn1-x-yFexNiyPO4 (x = 0, y = 0; x = 1/4, y = 1/4) system is calculated by using MS (Material Studio) software. The calculated results show that the band gap width of LiMn1/2Fe1/4Ni1/4PO4/C system is 0.105 eV, which has a great change compared with LiMnPO4. Thus, it is speculated that the Fe–Ni co-doped LiMnPO4 material has better electrochemical performance. The LiMn1-x-yFexNiyPO4 (x = 0, y = 0; x = 1/4, y = 1/4) composite materials were synthesized by co-precipitation method, and the optimum synthesis conditions also was explored. The electrochemical test indicates that the LiMn1/2Fe1/4Ni1/4PO4/C cathode material has excellent electrochemical properties, and its initial charge–discharge capacity is 143.8 mAh/g, which is significantly higher than that of LiMnPO4 material. The discharge capacity of this sample remains at about 152 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.05 C rate, showing good cyclic stability. The results of theoretical calculation and experimental test confirm each other, so as to prepare the LiMn1/2Fe1/4Ni1/4PO4/C materials with excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode materials were synthesized by using the co-precipitated metal carbonate as precursor.Structural and electrochemical properties were characterized by XRD,SEM,differential chronopotentiometry and galvanostatic cycling,and effect of F-doping on structural and electrochemical properties of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 was also investigated.SEM results showed that LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 powders are spherical particles.Fluorine doped materials composed of irregular particles.In the voltage range of 2.5-4.4 V,the LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode material has an initial discharge specific capacity of 162 mAh·g-1,and capacity retention rate is 93.2% up to 50 cycles.Appropriate F-doping can dramatically enhance the cycle performance of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode materials.After 50 charge-discharge cycles,the samples with z = 0.1 F-doing has 98.1% capacity retention rate.

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered structure cathode materials are arousing significant attention in the next-generation commercial lithium ion batteries owing to their high capacity and energy density. However, the poor rate performance and inferior cycle stability stand in the way of its large-scale applications. In this study, we pioneer a novel cation/anion (sodium/fluorine) co-doping approach to address the above issues for lithium rich Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 cathode. Consequently, the cation/anion co-doped cathode material could keep the advantages of both cation (sodium) and anion (fluorine), which can significantly enhance the stability by suppressing the phase transformation from layered to spinel structure and rate performance through decreasing resistance of Li diffusion and the electrons migration. The co-doped Li1.12Na0.08Ni0.2Mn0.6O1.95F0.05 exhibits an excellent cycling stability (100% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C) and a superior rate performance (167 mAh g−1 at 5 C). The mechanism of the dramatic improvement is also systematic investigated for the first time. Furthermore, we also believe that the cation/anion co-doping approach could be employed to improve the performance of other classes of layered cathode materials.
Fe Doped Li1.2Mn0.6-x/2Ni0.2-x/2FexO2 (x≤0.1) As Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A series of Li1.2Mn0.6-x/2Ni0.2-x/2FexO2 (x=0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.10) cathode materials has been prepared by a modified Pechini process. The structure and morphology of the obtained materials have been examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The electrochemical properties of Li1.2Mn0.6-x/2Ni0.2-x/2FexO2 have been characterized systematically and Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 exhibits the best cyclic stability and high-rate capability. The Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 electrode delivers a large reversible discharge capacity of 261.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1C-rate with a high capacity retention rate of 90.9% after 80 cycles. Meanwhile it displays obviously improved rate capability with the capacity of 187.3 mAh g−1 at the 1C-rate and stable cycling performance of 165 mAh g−1 after 150 cycles. The effects of a small amount of Fe doping are explored through ex-situ XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), differential capacity vs. voltage (dQ/dV) plots and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show stable layered structure and well-crystallized particle surface for Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 electrode in contrast with spinel nanodonmains distribution and amorphous surface region for Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 electrode upon cycling, which account for the outstanding electrochemical performance of Fe doped Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 cathode material.

Abstract:The Mn-doped LiFePO4/C cathode materials are prepared by high-temperature solid-phase process. The obtained products have ball-like morphologies with uniform carbon coating. As cathode for lithium-ion battery, the as-prepared LiMn0.02Fe0.98PO4/C composite exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, which delivers a discharge capacity of 154.7 mAh/g at 0.1 C. Significantly, a capacity of 100.4 mAh/g (1 C) at 0 oC can be obtained for LiMn0.02Fe0.98PO4/C cell, which is higher than that of LiFePO4/C cell (78.7 mAh/g) at same testing condition. After 100 cycles, the discharge capacity was 140 mAh·g-1 and the capacity retention rate was 98.6 %. LiMn0.02Fe0.98PO4/C composite was able to provide a discharge specific capacity of 88.2 mAh·g-1 even at high rates of 10 C, indicating its excellent rate capability and cycling stability.The improved performance of Mn doped LiFePO4/C is due to the embedding and stripping ability of Li+ in LiFePO4 lattice is improved. This study can provide directions for improving the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4 materials.

Abstract:The development of cobalt-free P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes is hampered by poor electrochemical performance, resulting from structural instability during high-voltage cycling. Herein, Li+ and F− ions are introduced simultaneously via a simple sol–gel method. The F not only enters the lattice but forms chemically stable NaF on the surface. The modified electrode delivered significantly better electrochemical performance than the pristine one, including much-enhanced capacity retention (64% vs. 36%, 100 cycles) at 0.5 C and a four-time higher capacity output at 10 C. The ex situ XRD and in situ Raman analysis revealed cyclability enhancement mechanisms in terms of inhibiting the P2–O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering. The conductivity measurements (based on AC impedance and DC polarization) and GITT analysis proved, on both bulk material and electrode levels, that Na+ conduction and, thus, rate performance is notably promoted by doping. The individual contribution of Li and F to the overall performance improvement was also discussed. Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-metal battery was successfully demonstrated with the modified cathode. The above results verify that Li+/F− incorporation can enable enhancements in both cyclability and rate capability of the P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes and are expected to provide a new perspective for the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for progressive sodium-ion batteries.

Electrochemical Performance of Li-rich Cathode Material, 0.3li2mno3–0.7limn1/3ni1/3co1/3o2 Microspheres with F-doping

Abstract:Layered F-doped cathode materials 0.3Li2MnO3–0.7LiMn1/3Ni1/3Co1/3O2−xFx (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) microspheres made up of nanosized primary grains were prepared through co-precipitation method. The sample of x = 0.02 demonstrates a large discharge capacity of 226 mAh·g−1 over 100 cycles at 0.1C and excellent rate performance with discharge capacity of 96 mAh·g−1 at 5.0C and room temperature. Particularly, this material shows much enhanced electrochemical performances even at high temperature of 55 °C. It delivers a quite high discharge capacity of 233.7 mAh·g−1 at 1.0C with capacity retention as high as 97.9% after 100 cycles. The results demonstrate that the fluorine incorporation stabilizes the cathode structure and maintains stable interfacial resistances.

Abstract:For advanced lithium-ion batteries, LiNixCoyMnzO2 (x + y + z = 1) (NCM) cathode materials containing a high nickel content have been attractive because of their high capacity. However, to solve severe problems such as cation mixing, oxygen evolution, and transition metal dissolution in LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathodes, in this study, F-doped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCMF) was synthesized by solid-state reaction of a NCM and ammonium fluoride, followed by heating process. From X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the oxygen in NCM can be replaced by F− ions to produce the F-doped NCM structure. The substitution of oxygen with F− ions may produce relatively strong bonds between the transition metal and F and increase the c lattice parameter of the structure. The NCMF cathode exhibits better electrochemical performance and stability in half- and full-cell tests compared to the NCM cathode.

Abstract:Co-free cathode materials are gradually attracted wide attention due to the low budget and environmental friendliness, but their application is still prevented by the poor rate performance and cyclic stability. Herein, the Co-free lithium-rich cathode materials (Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2, LRNMO) with a nano-micron combined morphology is prepared by a simple oxalate co-precipitation route and further modified by an anion doping strategy. It has been found that the F- anion doping can increase the content of Mn4+ in LRNMO, reduce the influence of the Jahn-Teller effect, and further impede the transition from layered phase to spinel phase. As a result, the as-obtained Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2-xFx (x = 0.04, named as F4-LRNMO) shows an optimal electrochemical performance, for instance, high discharge capacity (243 mAh g(-1)) with a satisfactory initial coulombic efficiency of 84.37% at 0.1C. Meanwhile, the F4-LRNMO sample also can display high capacity retention of 92.2% after 200 cycles at 1C, and a remarkably high discharge capacity of 151 mAh g(-1) with capacity retention of 95.4% after 100 cycles even at high rate of 5C. In consequence, this work can not only ameliorate the defects of poor stability and low initial coulomb efficiency, but also offer a meaningful exploration for the development of Co-free lithium-rich cathode materials with high capacity and high performance-price ratio.

Abstract:The composite cathode materials consisting of spinel-structure Li1.05Ni0.1Mn1.9O3.98F0.02 and nano-sized solid electrolyte Li–La–Ti–O (LLTO) coating were synthesized by the molten salt method and sol–gel coating process. Our results showed that Ni–F co-doping, recrystallization and LLTO coating can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of spinel LiMn2O4 cathode materials at elevated temperature and large rates. The doping and recrystallization can improve the stability of spinel grain structure and solid electrolyte LLTO coating can effectively suppresses HF-induced Mn2+ dissolution and maintains the structural integrity during cycling. At room temperature and low rates, the doping and recrystallization play dominant roles, at elevated temperature and large rates, the protective role of solid electrolyte coating is prominent.

Abstract:A series of the mixed transition metal compounds, Li[(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)1–x-yAlxBy]O2-zFz (x = 0, 0.02, y = 0, 0.02, z = 0, 0.02), were synthesized via coprecipitation followed by a high-temperature heat-treatment. XRD patterns revealed that this material has a typical α-NaFeO2 type layered structure with R3-m space group. Rietveld refinement explained that cation mixing within the Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O2 could be absolutely diminished by Al-doping. Al, B and F doped compounds showed both improved physical and electrochemical properties, high tap-density, and delivered a reversible capacity of 190 mAh/g with excellent capacity retention even when the electrodes were cycled between 3.0 and 4.7 V.

Abstract:Lithium and nickel co-doped LiMn2-2xLixNixO4 cathode materials (x= 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1) were synthesized by a high temperature solid-state reaction route. The microstructures and morphologies of the samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and field emitted scanning electronic microscopy. The bond lengths of the MnO6 octahedrons and the electrochemical performances in both room temperature and elevated temperature (55 degrees C) were characterized and discussed in comparison with LiMn2O4 spinel. The result reveals that LiMn2-2xLixNixO4 samples have a good reversibility. It is suggested that the co-doping of lithium and nickel in LiMn2O4-based compounds could stabilize the spinel structure and improve the capacity retention of the cathode materials.
F-doped O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 as high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:The F-doped O3-type NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2−xFx (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 002 and noted as NFM-F0, NFM-F0.005, NFM-F0.01, NFM-F0.02, respectively, united as NFM-Fs) cathode materials were investigated systematically. The rate performance and capacity retention of the O3-type cathode materials are significantly improved as a function of specific F-doping levels. Optimum performance is achieved in the NFM-F0.01 material having a capacity of ~110 mA h g−1 at a current density of 150 mA g−1 after 70 cycles. The results indicate that the binding energy of oxygen changes as a result of F-doping, and in addition, F-doping results in changes to the stoichiometry ofMn3+/Mn4+, which stabilizes the O3-type layered structure, thus allowing cycling performance to be improved. However, NFM-F0.02, having a higher F-doping level, retains a high capacity retention, although a slight loss is observed. The results suggest there is an optimum F-doping level for the NFM-F system to deliver enhanced cycling performance.

Abstract:In present study LiMn 2 O4- x F x were prepared by the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM ) were employed to detect the microstructure of the reaction products. It were found perfect crystal particles were obtained, and its’ size were uniform in 1∼2 μ m. The specific capacity and cycleability were measured basing on battery program control test system. The results shown the substitution of F for O increased the specific capacity of the material at the cost of the cycleability due to more Mn 3+ and less Mn 4+ existed in the material. The exist of Mn 3+ would reduce cycleability of cathode material due to the Jahn-Teller effect which were caused by the deformation of the crystal structure.
Band-Gap Engineering of FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O Nanosphere via Ni Doping as a High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode

Abstract:Iron-based fluorides, a kind of intercalation–conversion cathode material, are considered as one of the most promising candidate cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and cheap cost. Nevertheless, poor electrical conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics upon cycling impede their practical application. Herein, Ni-doped FeF3·0.33H2O has been put forward and fabricated by a simple solvothermal method to overcome the above deficiency. The impact of Ni doping on the physical and electrochemical performances has been studied by first-principles calculations combined with comprehensive physicochemical characterizations. The results reveal that appropriate substitution of Fe sites by Ni can result in F vacancies without changing the intrinsic crystal structure, but it not only reduces the band gap and improves its intrinsic conductivity but also broadens the ion channel, thus facilitating the rapid transport of ions and electrons to acquire excellent electrochemical properties. Compared with the bare FeF3·0.33H2O, the appropriate amount (8%) of Ni2+ doping exhibits higher reversible capacity, longer cyclic stability, and better rate capability. It presents a 412 mAh g–1 initial discharge capacity and remains 264 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 0.25 C (1 C = 200 mA g–1) within a range of 1.5–4.5 V. Additionally, at 2.0 C, it still delivers a high discharge capacity of 248 mAh g–1. Abstract:Elemental doping for substituting lithium or oxygen sites has become a simple and effective technique to improve the electrochemical performance of layered cathode materials. Compared with single-element doping, this work presents an unprecedented contribution to the study of the effect of Na+/F− co-doping on the structure and electrochemical performance of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2. The co-doped Li1-zNazNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2-zFz (z = 0.025) and pristine LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials were synthesized via the sol–gel method using EDTA as a chelating agent. Structural analyses, carried out by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealed that the Na+ and F− dopants were successfully incorporated into the Li and O sites, respectively. The co-doping resulted in larger Li-slab spacing, a lower degree of cation mixing, and the stabilization of the surface structure, which substantially enhanced the cycling stability and rate capability of the cathode material. The Na/F co-doped LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 electrode delivered an initial specific capacity of 142 mAh g−1 at a 1C rate (178 mAh g−1 at 0.1C), and it maintained 50% of its initial capacity after 1000 charge–discharge cycles at a 1C rate.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered materials Li[NixCoyMnzAl1-x-y-z]O2 (x > 0.8) are regarded as the competitive cathode for practical applications in lithium-ion batteries owing to the large discharging capacity. Nevertheless, the strong oxidation activity, the poor structure, and the thermal stability at the electrode-electrolyte interface would lead to much trouble, for example, inferior electrochemical properties and acute safety issues. To ameliorate the above problems, this work reports a strategy for the double modification of F- doping and LiNbO3 covering in LiNi0.88Co0.06Mn0.03Al0.03O2 cathode via using high-temperature calcining and ball-milling technology. As a result, the cathodes after F- doping and LiNbO3 covering not only demonstrate a more stabilized crystal structure and particle interface but also reduce the release of high-activity oxygen species to ameliorate the thermal runaway. The electrochemical tests show that the LiNbO3-F--modified cathode displays a superior rate capability of 159.3 mAh g-1 at 10.0 C and has the predominant capability retention of 92.1% in the 200th cycle at 25 °C, much superior than those (125.4 mAh g-1 and 84.0%) of bare cathode. Thus, the F- doped and LiNbO3-coated Ni-rich oxides could be a promising cathode to realize the high capacity and a stabilized interface.
A nanocomposite of Li 2 MnO 3 coated by FePO 4 as cathode material for lithium ion batteries

Abstract:A core-shell nanocomposite of Li2MnO3 is synthesized by coating FePO4 nanoparticles on the surface of our prepared Li2MnO3 nanoplate. This core-shell structured nanocomposite can eliminate the large irreversible capacity for the Li-rich materials. The FePO4 on the surface of Li2MnO3 can also serve as a host for Li ions that deintercalate from Li2MnO3 during the initial charging process and the initial Coulomb efficiency can be 100%. The composite as the cathode material for lithium ion batteries exhibits an attractive reversible capacity of 180 mAh g−1. Its cycling performance is also stable without any evident capacity fading, even when cycling in the high voltage range of 2.0–4.8 V vs. Li+/Li. This nanocomposite is free of Co- and Ni, different from other Li-rich Li2MnO3 based cathode materials, and shows great attraction for applications of low cost cathode materials for lithium ion batteries.
