Abstract:In this article, longitudinal wave (P-wave) band structures of functionally graded viscoelastic phononic crystals (PnCs) with exponential distribution properties are analytically investigated via an exact method. Differing from the laminated model, displacement and stress vectors of normal incident P-wave are obtained exactly by utilizing a stress-transform technique and the state space method. According to the continuous condition and Bloch theory, the eigenvalue equation of band structure is derived by applying transfer matrix method. The storage modulus is considered to be frequency-dependent while the loss modulus is neglected for the consideration of components viscoelasticity. Dispersion curves, obtained from the calculation of eigenvalue equation, are validated by the results of exist laminated model and transmission spectra which are also present to reveal the propagation characteristic of normal incident P-wave. Numerical examples indicate that band width and center frequencies of band gaps can be effectively altered by changing magnitude of exponential function, ratio between initial modulus and final modulus. Other new band gaps are opened as well as wider band width are achieved with the increase of gradient index & kcy;. The exact analytical solution presented in this paper can be the benchmark for those approximation solutions.

Abstract:A new beam structure with periodically attached multioscillators is proposed based on the idea of locally resonant (LR) phononic crystals (PCs) to reduce flexural vibrations in the frequency-multiplication ranges. Wave band structures of the new beam are derived by using the transfer matrix method. The multiple band gaps in the beam are then verified by the frequency response function (FRF), which is calculated through the finite element method. In addition, simplified models are proposed, which contribute to the calculation of the edge frequencies of the band gaps and enhance the understanding of the LR mechanism of PCs. The accuracy of the simplified models is proven by comparing them with the results derived from the analytical model under different beam structure parameters. The results suggest that lower frequencies and ranges of frequency multiplications can be achieved in the band gaps which are obtained from the new beam structure with multioscillators in a unit cell. Therefore, the ideas presented in this paper have the potential to be used in developing new devices with frequency-multiplication characteristics for vibration isolation or noise control in aerospace and civil structures.
Defect Mode-Induced Unidirectional Flexural Wave Transmission Using Prismatic Beams with Concentrated Gradient Masses

Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.
Flexural Fatigue Study of Glubam Beams

Abstract:Three simply supported glue laminated bamboo (glubam), lengthened from bamboo veneer plate with glued and pressed techniques during the process of manufacture, under static experiments compare to three of fatigue experiments to analyze the fatigue damage on the stiffness and strength of bamboo elements followed by modal analysis in method of the integrated modal parameter estimator LMS PloyMax. The main outcomes of the experiments were: (1) fatigue experiment reduced the bearing capacity of glubam beams approximately by 10% due to the weakness of finger-joint and fatigued gluing; (2) when the upper value of cyclic load not surpassed its design value, there were no distinct reduction on the stiffness of specimens comparing to the static group that proved the applicability and validity of the fatigue design value; (3) Excellent flexibility of bamboo contributed to the fine stability of glubam beams in aspect of dynamic response during the fatigue loading. This paper provides an attempting experimental research as the fundamental work and reference for deeper results in the future.

Abstract:The band-gap properties of non-uniform periodic beams are analyzed using numerical and experimental methods. The flexural wave equations are established based on the Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. The beams with periodically variable cross sections are investigated. The transfer matrix method is used to explore the dynamic behaviors of the periodic beams, that is, the natural frequencies of the finite periodic beams with different cross-section ratios between the adjacent sub-cells and the band-gaps of the infinite periodic beams based on the Bloch theory. The validity and accuracy of the band-gaps acquired by the present method are verified by comparing the results with those obtained from the finite element method and the vibration experiments. The effects of the different lengths of adjacent sub-cells on the band-gap properties are then investigated. The research results and conclusions should be useful in the study of vibration control applications.

Abstract:Band gaps appear in the frequency spectra of periodic materials and structures. In this work we examine flexural wave propagation in beams and investigate the effects of the various types and properties of periodicity on the frequency band structure, especially the location and width of band gaps. We consider periodicities involving the repeated spatial variation of material, geometry, boundary and/or suspended mass along the span of a beam. In our formulation, we implement Bloch’s theorem for elastic wave propagation and utilize Timoshenko beam theory for the kinematical description of the underlying flexural motion. For the calculation of the frequency band structure we use the transfer matrix method, derived here in generalized form to enable separate or combined consideration of the different types of periodicity. Our results provide band-gap maps as a function of the type and properties of periodicity, and as a prime focus we identify and mathematically characterize the condition for the transition between Bragg scattering and local resonance, each being a unique wave propagation mechanism, and show the effects of this transition on the lowest band gap. The analysis presented can be extended to multi-dimensional phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials.

Abstract:Free vibration of orthotropic functionally graded beams, whose material properties can vary arbitrarily along the thickness direction, is investigated based on the two-dimensional theory of elasticity. A hybrid state-space/differential quadrature method is employed along with an approximate laminate model, which allows us to obtain the semi-analytical solution easily. With the introduction of continuity conditions at each fictitious interface and boundary conditions at the top and bottom surfaces, the frequency equation for an inhomogeneous beam is derived. A completely exact solution of an FGM beam with material constants varying in exponential way through the thickness is also presented, which serves a benchmark to verify the present method. Numerical results are performed and discussed.

Abstract:Vibration response and band gap characteristics of the functionally graded frame structures are investigated based on the first-order shear deformation theory. The material properties of functionally graded material rods vary continuously in thickness direction according to a power law. Spectral stiffness matrix of the periodic functionally graded material frame structure in the global coordinate system is derived in detail. Consequently, the vibration band gap properties of the functionally graded material frame structure can be calculated and analyzed by using the spectral element method. The calculation accuracy for dynamic responses of the functionally graded material frame structure is validated by the finite element method. The results demonstrate that the wider band gaps in the low and medium frequency ranges can be achieved for the functionally graded frame structures comparing with the homogeneous ones. Moreover, the frequency windows and ranges for the band gaps of the functionally graded material frame structure can be effectively adjusted through designing the gradient indexes for the functionally graded material rods, which provide a novel idea for vibration suppression of frame structures.

Abstract:A novel functionally graded (FG) sandwich metastructure beam is proposed for broadband vibration reduction based on the band gaps of Bragg scattering and local resonance. The coupling band gap performance of FG sandwich metastructure beam is used to improve vibration reduction in the low and medium frequency ranges. An analytical model for vibration transmission and band structure of the FG sandwich metastructure beam is developed. The calculation accuracy of present analytical model is verified by using finite element method (FEM). Theoretical results demonstrate that the hybrid band gap in the low and medium frequency ranges will be generated by coupling the Bragg scattering and locally resonant band gaps, and the bandwidth and location of the hybrid band gap can be enhanced and tuned by adjusting the MFC piezoelectric shunting circuit parameters. It also shows that the starting and stopping frequencies of the hybrid band gap can be flexibly designed by the height ratio and constituent gradient of FG sandwich beam. The results in the study provide a new approach to the design of broadband vibration reduction for the composite sandwich structures.

Abstract:A novel functionally graded (FG) polymer-based nanocomposite reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets is proposed based on a new distribution law, which is constructed by the error function and contains a gradient index. The variation of the gradient index can result in a continuous variation of the weight fraction of graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs), which forms a sandwich structure with graded mechanical properties. The modified Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model is used to evaluate the effective Young's modulus of the novel functionally graded graphene nanoplatelets reinforced composites (FG-GPLRCs). The bending and elastic vibration behaviors of the novel nanocomposite beams are investigated. An improved third order shear deformation theory (TSDT), which is proven to have a higher accuracy, is implemented to derive the governing equations related to the bending and vibrations. The Chebyshev-Ritz method is applied to describe various boundary conditions of the beams. The bending displacement, stress state, and vibration frequency of the proposed FG polymer-based nanocomposite beams under uniformly distributed loads are provided in detail. The numerical results show that the proposed distributions of GPL nanofillers can lead to a more effective pattern of improving the mechanical properties of GPL-reinforced composites than the common ones.

Abstract:This paper presents a modified variational method for the dynamic analysis of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPM) deep curved beams with porosity (FGPP beam) resting on an arbitrary number of discrete elastic foundations (EFs). The material properties including the electrical and porous property are assumed to continuously vary in the thickness direction. A modified principle is developed to impose the continuity constrains on the internal and boundaries of the beam in both mechanical and electric field, which allows any linearly independent, complete basis functions to achieve satisfactory solutions. The shear, inertial and curvature effects of the moderately thick deep curved beams are also introduced in the energy functionals. The superior convergence, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are validated by comparing the proposed results with those available in literature. Series of numerical examples are presented for the free and transient vibration of the FGPP beams with different material properties. The influences of the power-law index, porosity, applied electric voltage and the EFs on the natural frequencies and transient dynamic responses of the FGPP beams are examined. Especially, the combined effects of porosity properties with other material properties on the dynamic characteristics of the FGPP beams are firstly presented, which are of significance for optimal design of corresponding smart structures.

Abstract:The introduction of microstructurally tunable materials endorses functionally graded (FG) beams with distinctly inspiring functionalities and mechanical properties. In order to facilitate the multiscale design of FG beams and evaluations of corresponding mechanical behavior, analytical solutions are developed in the present research on the static, dynamic and buckling responses of FG beams reinforced with graphene platelets, porosity or origami inclusions, etc. To facilitate the analytical derivation as well as numerical extension, this paper establishes a theoretical framework, firstly formulating the principle of virtual work and reciprocal theorem of work for the FG beams, and then deriving and proving the principles of minimum potential and complementary energies, the former of which is used for the establishment of the variational principles for the static bending, free vibration and buckling phenomenon in the present work. Following the proposed variational principles and considering Timoshenko beam theory, the strong-form partial differential governing equations as well as the corresponding boundary conditions can be obtained for static bending, free vibration and buckling responses of FG beams. The Ritz method is finally employed to obtain the explicit expressions of transverse bending and rotation as well as the frequencies and critical loads for FG beams with different boundary conditions. What's more, it should be noted that the FG of the beams is achieved through tailoring micromechanical parameters, such as volume fraction and distribution of reinforcement, which are usually unevenly distributed. The mechanical responses of FG beams are also predicted through micromechanics approaches, such as Halpin-Tsai expression. Conventional GPL distributions as well as graphene origami (GOri) distributions with negative Poisson's ratios (NPR) are also presented to validate the analytical derivation and solutions. Finally, the proposed solutions are employed to investigate the effect of the microstructural parameters on the effective behavior of FG beams.

Abstract:A new model for producing band gaps for flexural elastic wave propagation in a periodic microbeam structure is developed using an extended transfer matrix method and a non-classical Bernoulli–Euler beam model that incorporates the strain gradient, couple stress and velocity gradient effects. The band gaps predicted by the new model depend on the three microstructure-dependent material parameters of each constituent material, the beam thickness, the unit cell length and the volume fraction. A parametric study is conducted to quantitatively illustrate these factors. The numerical results reveal that the first band gap frequency range increases with the increases of the three microstructure-dependent material parameters, respectively. In addition, the band gap size predicted by the current model is always larger than that predicted by the classical model, and the difference is large for very thin beams. Furthermore, both the unit cell length and volume fraction have significant effects on the band gap.

Abstract:In this paper, a multiscale model is developed for the mass functionally graded (FG) beam-fluid system to investigate its static and dynamic responses based on 3D printed porous beam free vibration tests, which are determined by two aspects. At the microstructural level, the gradient variation is realized by arbitrary distribution of matrix pores, and the effective moduli under specific distribution are obtained using the micromechanics homogenization theory. In the meantime, at the structural level, the mechanical responses of FG porous beams subjected to mass loading are considered in a static fluid environment. Then, the explicit expressions of local finite-element (FE) expressions corresponding to the static and dynamic responses are given in the appendices. The present results are validated against numerical and experimental results from the literature and mechanical tests of 3D printed structures, with good agreement generally obtained, giving credence to the present model. On this basis, a comprehensive parametric study is carried out, with a particular focus on the effects of boundary conditions, fluid density, and slenderness ratio on the bending and vibration of FG beams with several different gradations.

Abstract:This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of non-uniform multi-span functionally graded (FG) 3D graphene foams (3D-GFs) reinforced beams with elastic boundary conditions. It is assumed that the foams are distributed according to four porosity distributions along the thickness direction and the beams sections varies in height and width along the length with the power-law distribution. Based on Timoshenko beam theory and Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion for multi-span beams are derived and the discrete singular convolution (DSC) method is adopted to solve them numerically. The present analysis is rigorously validated through direct comparisons against the results by those available in open literatures. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to study the effects of porosity distribution, slenderness ratio, taper ratio and different combination types of multi-span beams with non-uniform sections. This study provides a new conception of multi-span beam composition, providing designers with choices of beam forms under vibration response.

Abstract:Exact solutions for bending and free vibration of functionally graded beams resting on a Winkler–Pasternak elastic foundation are presented based on the two-dimensional theory of elasticity. The beam is assumed orthotropic at any point, while material properties varying exponentially along the thickness direction. The system of governing partial differential equations is reduced to an ordinary one about the thickness coordinate by expanding the state variables into an infinite trigonometric series. The problem is finally solved using the state space method, which is validated by comparing the present results to those available in the literature. Effects of several parameters, such as gradient index, aspect ratios, and foundation parameters on mechanical behavior of FGM beams are investigated. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for future analyses of such beams.

Abstract:Phononic crystals (PCs) play an important role in the reduction of vibration within a targeted frequency range. Most research of the one-dimensional PCs focuses on the properties or applications of the flexural band gaps; however, practically, the broadband environmental excitations also induce the torsional vibration. Hence, this paper studies a two-degrees-of-freedom local resonance (2DOF-LR) phononic crystal, which can both suppress the propagation of flexural and torsion waves in the same frequency range. To improve the computational efficiency, the Timoshenko theory with a modified transfer matrix (MTM) approach is used for flexural vibration band structure analysis. Through the finite element method (FEM), the vibration attenuation characteristics of the structure within the band gaps are verified. A comprehensive study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometric and material parameters on the attenuation characteristics of the phononic crystal. Finally, a prototype of the proposed phononic crystal is fabricated for the vibration experiment. It is worth noting that a novel experimental setup using the lever principle is designed in this paper to verify the torsional band gap. The frequency ranges of the experimental vibration attenuation match well with the numerical results.

Abstract:This paper theoretically studies the propagation of flexural waves in an actively controllable locally resonant (LR) beam. It is shown that the band gaps can be simultaneously tuned by the axial force and the active electrical control actions. In some special cases, a super-wide pseudo-gap resulted from the combination of the resonance and Bragg gaps can be observed. The condition of inducing such pseudo-gap is further obtained with a closed-form expression with respect to the electrical control parameter and the axial force, which can be explored to actively control the broadband pseudo-gap by tuning these two parameters.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of flexoelectricity on the vibration responses of functionally graded porous piezoelectric sandwich nanobeam reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs). The Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and the general modified strain gradient theory are employed to formulate the constitutive equations. Different distributions of porosity and GPLs dispersion patterns are considered and the Halpin–Tsai model is used to predict Young's modulus and density of the nanobeam. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived based on the general strain gradient theory and solved by differential quadrature method. A parametric study is accomplished to investigate the effects of flexoelectricity, size-dependence, porosity coefficient, GPLs weight fraction, porosity distributions as well as GPLs dispersion patterns on the fundamental frequency of composite nanobeam. Numerical results indicate that the porosity, GPLs and flexoelectricity can effectively influence the vibration behavior of nanobeam.

Abstract:Nonlinear free vibration of microbeams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated in this paper based on the modified couple stress theory and von Kármán geometric nonlinearity. The non-classical beam model is developed within the framework of Timoshenko beam theory which contains a material length scale parameter related to the material microstructures. The material properties of FGMs are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to the power law function and are determined by Mori-Tanaka homogenization technique. The higher-order nonlinear governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using the Hamilton principle. A numerical method that makes use of the differential quadrature method together with an iterative algorithm is employed to determine the nonlinear vibration frequencies of the FGM microbeams with different boundary conditions. The influences of the length scale parameter, material property gradient index, slenderness ratio, and end supports on the nonlinear free vibration characteristics of the FGM microbeams are discussed in detail. It is found that both the linear and nonlinear frequencies increase significantly when the thickness of the FGM microbeam is comparable to the material length scale parameter.
