Abstract:Alloy-type antimony (Sb) and conversion-type molybdenum (Mo) anodes have attracted extensive attention in the application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity. In this study, Sb2MoO6 nanowires are prepared via a hydrothermal method and assessed their thermal behavior upon heat treatment, observing an intriguing transformation from nanowire to Sb2O3/MoOx nanosheets. To enhance structure stability, the Sb2MoO6 nanowires are successfully coated with a polyphosphazene layer (referred to as PZS@Sb2MoO6), which not only preserved the nanowires form but also yielded N/S co-doped carbon-coated SbPO4/MoOx (NS-C@SbPO4/MoOx) nanowires following annealing in an inert environment. This composite benefits from the stable PO4 3- anion that serve as a buffer against volume expansion and form a Li3PO4 matrix during cycling, both of which substantially bolster ion transport and cycle endurance. Doping with heteroatoms introduces numerous oxygen vacancies, augmenting the number of electrochemically active sites, and carbon integration considerably enhances the electronic conductivity of the electrode and alleviates the volume-change-induced electrode pulverization. Employed as anode materials in LIBs, the NS-C@SbPO4/MoOx electrode exhibits remarkable cycling performance (449.8 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 over 700 cycles) along with superior rate capability (394.2 mA h g-1 at 2000 mA g-1).

Abstract:Among the various nanostructures, porous materials with controlled pore structures have been widely used for designing transition metal-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, because they provide good access to electrolyte and can effectively accommodate stress arising from volume changes. In particular, ternary transition metal oxide materials containing nanovoids, arranged with high degree of periodicity, are ideal for enhancing lithium-ion storage capability. In this study, we provide a method using spray pyrolysis for the synthesis of mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon, in which three-dimensionally ordered 40 nm-sized mesopores are interconnected. During the synthesis, polystyrene nanobeads are used as a sacrificial template and are readily eliminated via thermal decomposition. Increased concentrations of polystyrene nanobeads enables the formation of open channels throughout the microspheres. When employed as a lithium-ion battery anode, the mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon exhibit high reversible capacity, good cycling stability, and excellent rate performance. After 1000 cycles, the microspheres deliver a discharge capacity of 693 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1.0 A g-1.
Controlled Synthesis of Ultrafine β-Mo2C Nanoparticles Encapsulated in N-Doped Porous Carbon for Boosting Lithium Storage Kinetics

Abstract:Rational construction of anode material architecture to afford excellent cycling stability, fast rate capacity, and large specific capacity is essential to promote further development of lithium-ion batteries in commercial applications. In this work, we propose a facile strategy to anchor ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles in N-doped porous carbon skeleton (β-Mo2C@NC) using a scalable salt-template method. The well-defined and abundant hierarchical porous structure of β-Mo2C@NC can not only significantly enhance the electron/ion transfer but also markedly increase the specific surface area to effectively expose the electrochemically accessible active sites. Besides, the N-doped carbon matrix can turn the d-orbital electrons of the Mo to boost the electron transportation as well as distribute active sites to buffer the volume change of Mo2C and provide conductive pathways during discharge/charge cycles. As a result, the as-prepared β-Mo2C@NC displays excellent lithium storage performance in terms of 1701.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles and a large capacity of 816.47 mA h g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 after 500 cycles. The above results distinctly demonstrate that the β-Mo2C@NC composite has potential application as anode materials in high-performance energy storage devices.
Preparation of Carbon Coated Moo2 Nanobelts and Their High Performance As Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Carbon coated MoO2 nanobelts were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method followed by calcination under inert atmosphere, using alpha-MoO3 nanobelts as the precursor and self-template, ethanol as the reducer and glucose as the carbon source. Under the protection of polysaccharide resulting from glucose polycondensation, the 1-D morphology can be well retained during the reduction and carbonization processes. Tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the carbon coated MoO2 nanobelts exhibit a reversible capacity of 769.3 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) in the first cycle, and retain 80.2% of the capacity after 30 cycles. When the current density increases, this material shows high rate capability and good cycling performance.

Abstract:Molybdenum oxide (MoO2) is a promising anode material for use in lithium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity (838 mAh g(-1)). However, rapid capacity decay seriously restricts its practical application. In this work, MoO2 nanobelts were coated in situ with a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon layer to construct a MoO2@C composite through a facile solvothermal method combined with an annealing treatment to generate high performance lithium-ion battery anodes. Such a composite has a novel core-shell structure with MoO2 nanobelts as the core and an MOF-derived carbon layer as the shell. The MOF-derived carbon layer, which is composed of numerous N-doping carbon nanoparticles immersed with cobalt monoxide (CoO) nanoparticles, is quite thin, with a thickness of similar to 7-8 nm, and it possesses many pores. When evaluated as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the MoO2@C electrode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, including a high specific capacity of 1049 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) for the 50th cycle, superior rate capability of 710 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) (68% retention of the capacity at 0.1 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability of 787.7 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 300 cycles (96% capacity retention). These results are mainly attributed to the multifunctionality of the MOF-derived carbon layer, which realizes an effective synergistic effect of high conductivity, enhanced reaction kinetics, stable microstructure and extra capacity contribution from the CoO component. Therefore, this work expands the application of MOFs and provides a promising method for developing an MoO2 anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:N-doped mesoporous carbon-capped MoO2 nanobelts (designated as MoO2@NC) were synthesized and applied to lithium-ion storage. Owing to the stable core-shell structural framework and conductive mesoporous carbon matrix, the as-prepared MoO2@NC shows a high specific capacity of around 700 mAhg(-1) at a current of 0.5 Ag-1, excellent cycling stability up to 100 cycles, and superior rate performance. The N-doped mesoporous carbon can greatly improve the conductivity and provide uninhibited conducting pathways for fast charge transfer and transport. Moreover, the core-shell structure improved the structural integrity, leading to a high stability during the cycling process. All of these merits make the MoO2@NC to be a suitable and promising material for lithium ion battery.

Abstract:Molybdenum dioxide has aroused a wide concern as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and high density. However, it still faces the problems of large volume changes and low electronic conductivities, which limits its practical application. Herein, necklace-like N-doped carbon nanofibers encapsulating MoO 2 nanospheres (MoO 2 @NCNFs) with Mo–C bonding have been designed to address these issues. The rational design carbon coating structure can not only enhance the electron transfer, but also markedly strengthen structural stability. As expected, the as-prepared electrode showed superior lithium storage capacity, including a high specific capacity of 1120 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , and good rate performance of 502 mAh·g −1 at 4.0 A·g −1 and a prolonged cycling stability of 490 mAh·g −1 capacity retention over 3000 cycles at 4.0 A·g −1 .

Abstract:Mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres with an average diameter of approximately 480 nm have been synthesized by a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted solvothermal method followed by thermal annealing. MnCo2O4 nanospheres consist of many nanoparticles having sizes in range of 20-50 nm, the specific area of the sample being 24.4 m(2) g(-1). When used as the anode material for lithium ion batteries, the mesoporous MnCO2O4 nanospheres show not only an excellent cycling stability, but also an outstanding rate capability. More specially, the discharge capacities of 749.1 and 629.6 mA h g(-1) can be retained at current densities of 200 and 400 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles, respectively. In addition, the average discharge capacities of 1013.8, 827.1, 770.6, 733.3, 697.3, 651.4 and 522.4 mA h g(-1) could be observed at current densities of 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 2000 mA g(-1), respectively. The improved cycling stability and rate capability can be ascribed to two unique structural features of mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres: namely, the mesoporous nature of electrode materials which can help to reduce the volume variation during repeated lithiation/delithiation processes, and the nanostructure which can provide a shortened Li+ transmission path. The current synthesis approach can be easily spread to prepare other binary metal oxides, including Co-free anode materials.

Abstract:A facile one-pot hydrothermal method has been developed for the preparation of carbon-coated MoO2 nanocrystals. The annealed MoO2-C nanocomposite consists of interconnected MoO2@C nanocrystals. When evaluated for lithium storage capabilities, these MoO2@C nanocrystals exhibit high specific capacities (similar to 640 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) and similar to 57.5 mA h g(-1) at 400 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. In view of the excellent lithium storage properties and the ease in large-scale preparation, the as-synthesized MoO2-C nanocomposite might be used as promising anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
Synergistic effect of molybdenum dioxide wrapped nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes in binder-free anodes for enhanced lithium storage properties

Abstract:Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) is regarded as a potential anode for lithium-ion batteries due to its highly theoretical specific capacity. However, its further application in lithium-ion battery is largely limited by insufficient practical discharge capacity and cyclic performance. Here, MoO2 nanoparticles are in-situ grown on three-dimensional nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) on nickel foam substrate homogeneously using a simple electro-deposition method. The unique structural features are favorable for lithium ions insertion and extraction and charge transfer dynamics at electrode/electrolyte interface. As a proof of concept, the as-synthesized nanocomposites have been employed as anode for lithium-ion battery, exhibiting a reversible and significantly improved discharge capacity of ~ 517 mA h g-1 at the current density of 150 mA g-1 as well as superior cycle and rate performance. The first-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate a reduced energy barrier of lithium ions diffusion, improved lithium storage behavior, reduced structure collapse, and significantly enhanced charge transfer kinetics in MoO2/NCNTs nanocomposites with respect to MoO2 powder. The excellent performance makes as-prepared MoO2/NCNTs nanocomposites promising binder-free anode for high performance lithium-ion batteries. This work also provides important theoretical insights for other state-of-the-art batteries design.

Chemical coupling of manganese-cobalt oxide and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes for enhanced lithium storage

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials are extensively utilized to optimize the electrochemical performance of the transition metal oxides as anode for lithium-ion batteries. However, the in-depth mechanism of the synergistic effect and the interfacial interaction between transition metal oxides and conductive carbon material has not been elucidated clearly. Herein, by using the oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (oMWCNTs), an advanced MnO2/(Co, Mn)(Co, Mn)2O4/oMWCNTs (MO/CMO/oMWCNTs) nanocomposite with abundant metal-oxygen-carbon (Me-OC) bonds as linkage bridge is fabricated for the first time. The strong covalent bonds interactions can simultaneously enhance the intrinsic sluggish kinetics and structural stability of MO/CMO/oMWCNTs nanocomposite. Meanwhile, the mixed transition metal oxides featuring mix valence state can significantly promote the electrode material activity. Consequently, the newly prepared MO/CMO/oMWCNTs electrode displays superior long-term durability with the capacity of 897 mAh g-1 over 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1 and ultrafast charging/discharging capability of 673 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1. Detailed electrochemical kinetic analysis reveals that over 70% of the energy storage of MO/CMO/oMWCNTs electrode is dominated by the pseudocapacitive behavior. This work demonstrates an easily scalable approach for constructing high-performance transition metal oxides/carbon electrode materials through interfacial regulation.
Multi-core Yolk-Shell Like Mesoporous Double Carbon-Coated Silicon Nanoparticles As Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Various techniques have been developed to mitigate the volume expansion of silicon-based materials and improve their conductivity in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we have synthesized a novel cobalt and nitrogen co-doped double carbon coated silicon/carbon/metal-organic framework (MOF) multi-core yolk-shell like mesoporous materials through sol-gel and MOF self-template methods. The structure and morphology of the sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The results show that the prepared composite is made up of multiple phenolic resin-based carbon-coated silicon embedded in MOF-derived carbon framework. The composite exhibits excellent lithium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 1107 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) after 100 cycles and cycling stability capacity of 852 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) over 300 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to double carbon coated multi-core yolk-shell mesoporous structure in conjunction with cobalt and nitrogen co-doping, which can improve electrical conductivity and the cycle performance of silicon. Moreover, as the electrolyte blocking layer, the double-layer carbon coating is beneficial to the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase films, and empty space inside the MOF-derived carbon multi-core yolk-shell structure can effectively mitigate the volume change of silicon during the lithiation/delithiation process.

Abstract:MoO2 is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries, however, the lithiation of bulk MoO2 is usually limited to addition-type reaction at room temperature, and the conversion reaction is hindered because of the sluggish kinetics. Herein, a nanocomposite of MoO2 embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (MoO2/NC) is synthesized through the in situ thermolysis of an organic molybdenum complex MoO2(acac)(phen) (acac = acetylacetone, phen = 1,10-Phenanthroline). Owing to the fact that [MoO2]2+ can be strongly chelated by phen, the molybdenum source in the MoO2(acac)(phen) precursor is highly dispersed, leading to the formation of ultra-small MoO2 nanoparticles in the nanocomposite, which can facilitate the conversion reaction. Moreover, the NC matrix can guarantee a high electrical conductivity and effectively accommodate the volume changes triggered by the conversion reaction. Consequently, the MoO2/NC nanocomposite exhibits outstanding electrochemical properties, including large reversible capacity of 950 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, high-rate capability of 605 mA h g-1 at 2A g-1, and excellent cycling stability over 500 cycles as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Molybdenum nitride/N-doped carbon nanospheres (MoN/N-C) are synthesized by hydrothermal method followed by ammonia annealing. The as-prepared MoN/N-C nanospheres manifest considerable electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction in nonaqueous electrolytes because of its nanostructure and the synergetic effect between MoN and N-C. Furthermore, the MoN/N-C nanospheres are explored as cathode catalyst for Li-O-2 batteries with tetra-(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether as the electrolyte. The assembled batteries deliver alleviated overpotentials and improved battery lifespan, and their excellent performances should be attributed to the unique hierarchical structure and high fraction of surface active sites of cathode catalyst.

However, a dramatic volume expansion occurred during the charge/discharge process, which results in anode pulverization and thereafter a rapid capacity fading and limits its application as an anode material. Herein, we report the preparation of MoO2 nanoparticles embedded in a porous octahedral carbon matrix (denoted as MoO2@C) by using a polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (PMOF) as the precursor. This facile strategy ensures the in situ formation of a porous carbon matrix which could increase active sites to store redox ions and enhance the ionic diffusivity of the encapsulated MoO2 nanoparticles. Benefiting from such unique structures, the MoO2@C composite is capable of delivering a high reversible specific capacity of 1442 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) and 443.8 mA h g(-1) after 850 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1) as an anode material.
MOF-Derived ZnO Nanoparticles Covered by N-Doped Carbon Layers and Hybridized on Carbon Nanotubes for Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have many promising applications in energy and environmental areas such as gas separation, catalysis, supercapacitors, and batteries; the key toward those applications is controlled pyrolysis which can tailor the porous structure, improve electrical conductivity, and expose metal ions in MOFs. Here, we present a systematic study on the structural evolution of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks hybridized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the carbonization process. We show that a number of typical products can be obtained, depending on the annealing time, including (1) CNTs wrapped by relatively thick carbon layers, (2) CNTs grafted by ZnO nanoparticles which are covered by thin nitrogen-doped carbon layers, and (3) CNTs grafted by aggregated ZnO nanoparticles. We also investigated the electrochemical properties of those hybrid structures as freestanding membrane electrodes for lithium ion batteries, and the second one (CNT-supported ZnO covered by N-doped carbon) shows the best performance with a high specific capacity (850 mA h/g at a current density of 100 mA/g) and excellent cycling stability. Our results indicate that tailoring and optimizing the MOF-CNT hybrid structure is essential for developing high-performance energy storage systems.
MoC Ultrafine Nanoparticles Confined in Porous Graphitic Carbon As Extremely Stable Anode Materials for Lithium- and Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (MoC)/graphitic carbon nanocomposites are synthesized using a green and facile method. Well-crystallized MoC ultrafine nanoparticles (<5 nm diameter) are formed in situ inside the pores of a highly conductive graphitic carbon matrix. The resulting MoC/graphitic carbon nanocomposites exhibit very promising electrochemical performance when evaluated as anodes in LIBs and SIBs, because the synergistic effects of the small MoC nanoparticles provide fast and efficient transport and porous graphitic carbon can prevent continual rupturing as well as enhance conductivity. Meanwhile, this novel material has potential for broad application in rechargeable batteries, maintaining a reversible capacity of 742 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles at 200 mA g−1 for LIBs and a discharge capacity of 250 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles at 50 mA g−1 for SIBs. Furthermore, the required Mo can be recovered from wastewater, which gives this method an added environmental benefit and in return satisfy the current demand for sustainable development.
Carbon nanotube-wired and oxygen-deficient MoO3 nanobelts with enhanced lithium-storage capability

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) wired and oxygen-deficient MoO3−x/CNT structures are fabricated via a facile hydrothermal reaction followed by controlled reduction in Ar/H2. The MoO3−x/CNT, which consists of 63 mol% MoO3 and 37 mol% MoO2, exhibits a much improved Li-storage property compared with the original MoO3/CNT structure when evaluated as an anode in the 0.05–3.0 V region. It is able to retain a capacity of 421 mAh g−1 towards Li after 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1, and deliver 293 and 202 mAh g−1 at current densities of 2 and 4 A g−1, respectively. It is suggested that the formation and recovery of a metallic MoO2 phase over the conversion reaction may account for the enhanced performance.

Abstract:Traditional lithium-ion batteries that are based on layered Li intercalation electrode materials are limited by the intrinsically low theoretical capacities of both electrodes and cannot meet the increasing demand for energy. A facile route for the synthesis of a new type of composite nanofibers, namely carbon nanofibers decorated with molybdenum disulfide sheets (CNFs@MoS2), is now reported. A synergistic effect was observed for the two-component anode, triggering new electrochemical processes for lithium storage, with a persistent oxidation from Mo (or MoS2) to MoS3 in the repeated charge processes, leading to an ascending capacity upon cycling. The composite exhibits unprecedented electrochemical behavior with high specific capacity, good cycling stability, and superior high-rate capability, suggesting its potential application in high-energy lithium-ion batteries.
