Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and efficient femtosecond laser operating at ~950 nm by directly frequency-doubling of a mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser. The laser is based on a highly compact architecture, with a dispersion-managed oscillator together with only one-step frequency conversion. The output pulse width is ~270 fs, with a repetition rate of 22.1 MHz and a pulse energy of 12.9 nJ. It is believed that the greatly simplified setup makes the current laser well suited for two-photon microscopy and other biomedical and clinical applications.

Abstract:A high energy all-fiber format nanosecond thulium-doped fiber laser at 2050 nm with a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration is presented in this paper. The seed oscillator is a linearly polarized gain-switched fiber laser pumped by a 1550 nm fiber laser. The output pulse of the seed has a polarization extinction ratio (PER) better than 16 dB with a maximal output power of 470 mW. After two-stage double- cladding fiber amplifiers, the average power at 40 kHz was boosted up to 40.5 W. The output pulse has a maximum pulse energy of 1 mJ with a pulse width of 100 ns, which corresponds to a peak power of 10 kW. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest single pulse energy ever reported for a nanosecond thulium-doped all-fiber MOPA system at 2050 nm.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method to achieve pulsed operation of thulium-doped fiber lasers at 1.7 mu m. In our design, the thulium-doped fiber laser cavity was embedded within the cavity of an erbium/ytterbium-codoped fiber laser operating at 1.5 mu m. The thulium-doped fiber in the erbium/ytterbium-codoped fiber laser cavity served as a saturable absorber, forcing the 1.5 mu m laser to operate in a passively Q-switched scheme. The 1.7 mu m thulium-doped fiber laser was in- turn pumped by the Q-switched 1.5 mu m laser and was gain-switched. This resulted in the pulse duration of 1.7 mu m emission was much shorter than that of 1.5 mu m emission. 1.02 W average output power at 1720 nm was obtained for 10 W of pump power at 976 nm. The pulse repetition frequency, pulse energy and pulse duration were 134 kHz, 7.6 mu J and 102 ns, respectively.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate direct generation of 51 nJ, 284-fs ultrashort pulses in an all-fiber cavity-optimized erbium-doped laser with a low repetition rate of 2.68 MHz. The conversion efficiency of the laser is about 10%. The laser is mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation. Such high energy and ultrashort duration benefits from using large output ratio (90%), elongating the cavity length, dispersion management, and bidirectional high-power pumping in the laser. Further decreasing the net dispersion of the laser by using a dispersion-compensated fiber can reduce the pulse duration to 160 fs. In addition, variation of spectral width due to an invisible filter in the laser is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Fiber lasers with wavelengths longer than 1.4 μm arouse great attentions due to their eye-safe atmospheric applications. In recent years, high peak power and high pulse energy thulium-doped fiber lasers (TDFLs) at 1.9-2.1 μm are useful for many scientific and technical applications, such as remote sensing, material processing, bio-medical treatment and nonlinear frequency conversion. In particular, compact fiber lasers with high beam quality at 2050 nm are highly desirable in remote sensing benefited from their low transmission loss in the atmosphere. And also, fiber lasers at 2050 nm are ideal pump sources for ZnGeP2 crystal based optical parameter oscillators with emitting wavelengths located at 3-5 μm middle infrared region [1]. A single frequency, linearly polarized master oscillator power amplifier emitting 110 ns, 1 kW peak power pulses at 2050 nm was reported in 2014 [2]. However, the output pulse energy was limited by the nonlinear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering.

Abstract:We report on the generation of high-energy noiselike pulse in a passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber ring laser based on the nonlinear polarization evolution technique. A newly developed heavily thulium-doped germanate glass fiber was used as the gain medium. By properly rotating the polarization controllers, the 17.3 nJ noiselike pulse with 60.2 nm spectral bandwidth was obtained at the fundamental pulse repetition frequency of 6.37 MHz. Correspondingly, the maximum average output power was 110 mW. The direct output of high-energy noiselike pulse from the thulium-doped fiber laser provides a good candidate of pulse source for some important applications such as the supercontinuum generation at mid-infrared wavelength range and optical metrology. Abstract:We report a compact ultrafast thulium-doped all-fiber laser delivering 65-fs pulses through nonlinear compression in a dispersion and nonlinearity managed fiber chain. The laser outputs 560-mW, 3.2-nJ pulses with a very broad bandwidth >160 nm at the central wavelength of 1980 nm. Numerical simulation investigates and verifies the formation and evolution of the ultrafast pulse.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultralong cavity, all-fiber, all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser that is passively mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Without any discrete dispersion-compensation components or conventional spectral filters, the SESAM works together with the strongly chirped pulse and the nonlinearity induced spectrum broadening to perform a filtering-equivalent function, thus stabilizing the mode locking. The laser generates 4.3 nJ stable mode-locked pulses with a 397 kHz fundamental repetition rate at a 1068 nm central wavelength.

Abstract:A compact 51.6-W, 26-μJ all-fiber integrated Yb-doped femtosecond laser source with pulse durations of 692 fs despite ∼18π nonlinear phase shift accumulation in the main amplifier is demonstrated by using fiber quasi-rectangular pulse pre-shaping. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experiment. Due to the advantages of an all-fiber spliced structure and a minimal pulse stretching ratio (from 26.3 ps to ∼70 ps), just a small size of gratings and a short separation distance between the two gratings in the compressor is required. Therefore, the laser source is exceedingly compact, robust, cost-effective, and easy to assemble. This technique is anticipated to accelerate the use of fiber femtosecond lasers in industrial applications.

Abstract:A nanosecond fiber laser with a line cavity was developed by taking a acousto-optic Q-switch as the modulator and a single cladding Yb-doped fiber as the gain medium. Then, by optimizing the laser, a nanosecond pulse seed source was obtained. With all-fiber Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA), the nanosecond pulse was amplified by one stage and obtained pulse laser shows its average power in 10.10 W, wavelength in 1064 nm, repetition frequency in 11 kHz, impulse duration in 150 ns, single pulse power in 0.92 mJ and peak power in 6 kW. Moreover, the optical-optical conversion efficiency is 67%. The whole system involves just a one-stage amplifier, which promotes the pumping efficiency and reduces the cost.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a mode-locked thulium/holmium doped fiber laser using carbon nanotubes as the saturable absorber. Combined with dispersion management, 250 fs pulse width and 1.58 nJ energy pulses, with a bandwidth tunable from 40-62 nm, were obtained directly from the fiber oscillator. Wide spectral and high energy pulses from mode-locked thulium/holmium co-doped fiber laser are likely to be further compressed to sub 100 fs.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method to achieve pulsed operation of thulium-doped fiber lasers at 1.7 mu m. This made the pulse duration of 1.7 mu m emission much shorter than that of 1.5 mu m emission. 1.02 W average output power at 1720 nm was obtained for 10 W of pump power at 976 nm. The pulse repetition frequency, pulse energy and pulse duration were 134 kHz, 7.6 mu J and 102 ns, respectively. A rate equation model was developed to examine the power- and temporal-behavior of the laser system. The calculated pulse duration and pulse repetition frequency matched well with the experimental results. Methods of further improving the laser performance are discussed based on insights gleaned from our modeling.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a nanosecond square pulse ytterbium doped fiber laser in the 1060 nm band. The laser is based on the figure-8 structure and has a tunable pulse bandwidth from 3 ns to beyond 100 ns, showing excellent temporal tuning ability. The experimental results show that a steady square pulse can be generated when the parameters of the cavity are chosen appropriately.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact, self-starting mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE), with a fundamental repetition rate of ∼344MHz and a pulse duration of ∼160fs. The generated pulses centered at ∼1975nm have a maximum output power of ∼560mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of ∼1.63nJ. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved repetition rate represents the highest value of fundamentally NPE mode-locked fiber lasers at ∼2µm, while the average output power is also higher than the previously reported 2 µm ultrafast single-mode fiber oscillators. The timing jitter in the integrated range [5 kHz, 10 MHz] and the integrated relative intensity noise in the range [10 Hz, 10 MHz] reach ∼35fs and ∼0.009%, respectively. Our high-performance laser is an ideal candidate for various applications, including mid-infrared frequency metrology and high-speed optical sampling.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated high-energy rectangular pulses delivering from an erbium-doped fiber laser operating in ultra-large net-negative-dispersion regime. The laser oscillator emits rectangular pulses with approximately Gaussian spectral profiles, adjustable nanoseconds durations, and multi-ten nanojoule energies. The outputted pulses can be further amplified to over 2 μJ without distortion by a two-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Thus, rectangular pulses with controllable durations and energies can be achieved from the compact all-fiber fiber laser system.

Abstract:We present a single-frequency thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) with a narrow linewidth of 20 kHz. Stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) lasing operation at 1957 nm is achieved using a segment of un-pumped polarization-maintaining thulium-doped fiber (PM-TDF) as an ultra-narrow bandwidth filter. A high optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of over 60 dB is obtained and a high power of over 400 mW is achieved with a high slope-efficiency (~45.8%) thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA).

Abstract:We report a multi-wavelength mode-locked Er/Yb codoped fiber laser with square nano-second pulse output, which is constructed with a “figure-of-eight” cavity structure. A section of polarization-maintaining Er/Yb co-doped double clad fiber was used as the gain medium and pumped by a fiber pigtailed multimode laser diode working at 975 nm via a multimode fiber combiner. Several megahertz repetition rate output pulses with peak power up to 9.2 W and pulse duration around several nanoseconds were obtained.

Abstract:We report on a type of 2 mu m h-shaped pulse generation in a thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser and experimentally investigate its cavity birefringence and pump power dependences. An asymmetric nonlinear optical loop mirror is employed as an artificial saturable absorber, which incorporates similar to 52.7 mdispersion-shifted fiber and similar to 3.8 multrahigh numerical aperture fiber to enhance the nonlinearity. The h-shaped pulse shows both a polarization state ( PS) and pump power related evolutions, even when randomly weak birefringence fibers are employed. By further incorporating different lengths of high birefringence polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF), i.e., introducing different amounts of linear cavity birefringence, much larger pulse tuning ranges can be realized. In particular, when thePMFis lengthened to similar to 2.3 mthrough manipulating the PS, the achieved longest pulse duration of similar to 318.14 ns can almost cover the whole repetition period of similar to 323.96 ns, corresponding to a pulse duty circle of similar to 98.2%, the largest ever reported from a fiber laser, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:A new architecture which is based on the chirped pulse amplification scheme is proposed to increase the pulse energy of the mode-locked fiber laser. The idea was applied to a passively mode-locked laser using an ytterbium (Yb/sup 3+/)-doped double-clad silica fiber. Mode-locking was achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution associated to frequency-shifted feedback technique for self-starting. A compressor and a stretcher, based on diffraction gratings, permitted us to manage the dispersion and to reduce the pulse power in the fiber. The laser delivered chirped pulses at 1050 nm with 11.8-nJ energy at a 9.3-MHz repetition rate (110-mW average power) which were subsequently compressed to 196-fs duration.
