Abstract:A compact wavelength-division (de)multiplexer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally to achieve doubled channel number and halved channel spacing by utilizing a bidirectional arrayed-waveguide grating integrated with an Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical interleaver. As an example, an 18-channel wavelength-division (de)multiplexer with a channel spacing of 200 GHz is designed and fabricated. The measured excess loss is about 8 dB and the channel crosstalk is -15 ~ -18 dB. The footprint of this fabricated (de)multiplexer is about 520 μm × 190 μm.

Abstract:Based on the concepts of the 2-dimension diffraction grating and the planar waveguide array,a novel optical multiplexer/demultiplexer (Mux/Demux) employing the 2-dimension arrayed-waveguide grating is proposed.Since the direction of the diffraction route is determined by the vectorial combination of the dispersion values in two directions,the 2-dimension wavelength demultiplexing can be realized by properly controlling the values of the free spectral ranges.Then the input and output accessing ports of the Mux/Demux can be set in 2 diemnsions,with which the capability to design high-channel-count optical Muxs/Demuxs is improved.The properties and the possible applications of this Mux/Demux are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) optical wavelength demultiplexing is demonstrated by employing multilevel arrayed waveguides as a 2D diffraction grating, named the 2D arrayed waveguide grating (2D-AWG). Since the monochromatic lightwave is diffracted by the 2D-AWG to a series of periodic spots with 2D diffraction orders in both x and y directions while the dispersion direction is never parallel to the x or y direction, we can obtain 2D wavelength demultiplexing exploiting diffraction orders of either the x or y direction. One of the two dispersion components is designed much larger than the other, and the correspondent spatial free spectral range component is set properly to ensure high diffraction efficiency. The input and output ports can also be designed based on the multilevel lightwave circuit (MLC), and their level planes can be tuned parallel to that of the MLC-based 2D-AWG, which makes it feasible to integrate the 2D-AWG with the input port and/or the output port. It provides a promising way to realize large-scale and high-density optical multiplexers/demultiplexers. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:We design a hybrid free-space wavelength-division multiplexers (MUX) that favor integration of matured high performance grating-based MUX and planar waveguide devices. By optimizing the component interfaces, we pursuit a divide-and-conquer method in the proposed hybrid integration. Meanwhile, a novel 6-channel coarse MUX based on layered diffractive optics is successfully designed. These two methods combined are promising in integrating multiple optical functions with cost-effective mass production.

Abstract:We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/lnP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically integrated Rowland circle grating. The design incorporated ten wavelength channels at 1.55 mu m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm. The total on-chip loss was about 10 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels was as low as -25 dB. It was shown that low-loss etched turning mirrors can reduce the total on-chip loss by about 4 dB compared to traditional 90 degrees curved multimode waveguides. By replacing standard hat grating facets with retro-reflecting V-shaped facets in the echelle grating, the loss was further reduced by 4 dB, Polarization independent operation within a passband of 0.5 nm was achieved by using multimode output waveguide, The potential sources producing the crosstalk have been analyzed and fabrication modifications for further improvement are suggested.

Abstract:A 32-channel wavelength division multiplexer with 100 GHz spacing is designed and fabricated by interleaving two silicon arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs). It has a parallel structure consisting of two silicon 16-channel AWGs with 200 GHz spacing and a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with 200 GHz free spectral range. The 16 channels of one silicon AWG are interleaved with those of the other AWG in spectrum, but with an identical spacing of 200 GHz. For the composed wavelength division multiplexer, the experiment results reveal 32 wavelength channels in C-band, a wavelength spacing of 100 GHz, and a channel crosstalk lower than –15 dB.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate an optical demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator material employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG). We substitute the bent waveguide array in the traditional AWG configuration by adopting the structure of the turning-mirror-integrated straight waveguides. Description of the design procedure is provided. The crosstalk of the fabricated 1/spl times/4 AWG is better than -23.1 dB. The typical on-chip insertion loss is about -8 dB and the output nonuniformity is less than 0.4 dB. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is about 0.068 nm.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer is demonstrated, which is successfully designed and fabricated. A wavelength channel spacing was 1.6nm, a crosstalk of less than -20dB and the insertion loss was 7-12dB around 1.55mum. The polarization-dependent wavelength shift was very small without special compensation methods.

Abstract:An optical wavelength demultiplexer with the etched diffraction grating (EDG) on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material is demonstrated. Fabricated by the wet-anisotropic-etching method, 90° turning mirrors are used to bend waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16×2.5 mm 2 . The crosstalk is below −16 dB. The on-chip loss is about 9.97 dB, which is composed of about 8.72 dB excess loss and 1.25 dB diffraction loss. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is below 0.13 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.35 dB. The sources of the crosstalk and loss are discussed in details, and the related measures to improve the performance are also presented.

Abstract:A silicon-based four-channel coarse wavelength- division multiplexing (CWDM) (de)multiplexer working in the O-band is proposed and realized. The present on-chip four-channel CWDM (de)multiplexer is composed of four cascaded optical filters with flat-top spectral responses, which are realized by combining a multimode waveguide grating (MWG) and a two-channel mode (de)multiplexer. For the realized flat-top CWDM (de)multiplexer with a ~18-nm channel-spacing, the measured 1-dB bandwidth is as large as 15 nm, which is ~75% of the channel spacing. The thermal sensitivity is also reduced from ~85 pm/°C to 46 pm/°C by introducing the compensation provided by an SU-8 upper-cladding with a negative thermo-optic coefficient.

Abstract:Optical demultiplexers employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) are demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator material. Abstract:A high‐performance silicon arrayed‐waveguide grating (AWG) with 1.6‐nm channel spacing is proposed and realized for dense wavelength‐division (de)multiplexing systems. For the present AWG, the arrayed waveguides are broadened uniformly to be far beyond the singlemode regime, so that random phase errors and propagation loss are minimized even without any additional requirement for the fabrication process. Particularly, Euler‐bends are introduced for the arrayed waveguides to shrink the device footprint and suppress undesired high‐order modes excitation. A silicon arrayed‐waveguide grating (AWG) with 1.6‐nm channel spacing is proposed and realized with high performances for dense wavelength‐division (de)multiplexing systems. For the present AWG, the arrayed waveguides are broadened uniformly to be far beyond the singlemode regime, so that random phase errors and propagation loss are minimized even without any additional requirement for the fabrication process. Particularly, Euler‐bends are introduced for the arrayed waveguides to shrink the device footprint and suppress any excitation of higher‐order modes. As an example, a 16 × 16 AWG (de)multiplexer is realized with a compact footprint of 600 × 800 μm2 by using single‐etched 220‐nm‐thick silicon photonic waveguides. When using the fabricated AWG to demultiplex the channels launched from the central input port, the excess loss and the adjacent‐channel crosstalk of the central output port are ≈2.2 and ≈−31.7 dB, respectively. Such an AWG is one of the best among silicon implementations.

Abstract:Leveraging the physical dimensions of an optical carrier (e.g., wavelength, mode, or polarization) allows significant scaling of the transmission capacity for optical communications. Here we propose a scheme for implementing on-chip silicon (de)multiplexers with simultaneous wavelength-, mode-, and polarization-division (de)multiplexing capability. The device is constructed by using cascaded subwavelength grating (SWG)-based contra-directional couplers. To verify the feasibility of the proposed structure, we perform a proof-of-concept experiment of an 8-channel (de)multiplexer with two wavelengths, two modes, and two polarizations. The insertion losses are lower than 6.6 dB and the crosstalk values are below 18.7 dB at around 1540 nm and 1550 nm for all the eight channels. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America.
