Abstract:Carbon nanotube spaced graphene aerogels have been prepared by a hydrothermal method and used for supercapacitor applications. The specific surface area and specific capacitance can be controlled by tuning the amount of added carbon nanotubes. The as-prepared composite aerogels retain the advantage of aerogel structure in providing macropores to ensure electrodes fast wetted by the electrolyte ions and also possess additional mesopores created by the carbon nanotube spacers for more ion adsorption. Benefited from that, the composite aerogels exhibit significantly enhanced supercapacitor properties in both aqueous and ionic liquid electrolyte. Compared with graphene aerogels, the composite aerogels show a 37% larger specific capacitance of 245.5 F g(-1) at a current density of 2.5 A g(-1) and high rate capability of 197.0 F g(-1) at a high current density of 80 A g(-1) in aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the composite aerogels deliver a 33% larger specific capacitance of 183.3 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and a high energy density of 80 Wh kg(-1) when using an ionic liquid (EMIMBF4) as the electrolyte. Abstract:As a newly developed material, carbon gels have been receiving considerable attention due to their multifunctional properties. Herein, we present a facile, green, and template-free route toward sponge-like carbonaceous hydrogels and aerogels by using crude biomass, watermelon as the carbon source. The obtained three-dimensional (3D) flexible carbonaceous gels are made of both carbonaceous nanofibers and nanospheres. The porous carbonaceous gels (CGs) are highly chemically active and show excellent mechanical flexibility which enable them to be a good scaffold for the synthesis of 3D composite materials. We synthesized the carbonaceous gel-based composite materials by incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the networks of the carbonaceous gels. The Fe3O4/CGs composites further transform into magnetite carbon aerogels (MCAs) by calcination. The MCAs keep the porous structure of the original CGs, which allows the sustained and stable transport of both electrolyte ions and electrons to the electrode surface, leading to excellent electrochemical performance. The MCAs exhibit an excellent capacitance of 333.1 F.g(-1) a current density of 1 A.g(-1) within a potential window of -1.0 to 0 V in 6 M KOH solution. Meanwhile, the MCAs also show outstanding cycling stability with 96% of the capacitance retention after 1000 cycles of charge/discharge. These findings open up the use of low-cost elastic carbon gels for the synthesis of other 3D composite materials and show the possibility for the application in energy storage.
Carbon Hydrangeas with Typical Ionic Liquid Matched Pores for Advanced Supercapacitors

Abstract:Pore-ion size matching between carbon electrodes and electrolytes is crucial for superior energy storage. However, it remains a great challenge to engineer carbons with perfectly compatible pore dimension for desired electrolytes. Herein we design a simple synthetic route to obtain carbon hydrangeas integrated with unique geometry, high surface areas, N/O doping, and more importantly, well-developed pore structure. The narrow primary subnanopores of 0.80 nm are exactly matched the cation sizes (EMIM+, 0.76 nm) of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIMTFSI) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) ionic liquid electrolytes. Besides, the secondary pores of 0.50 nm are size-exclusively accessible for small BF4- anions (0.48 nm) but exclude larger TFSI- (0.79 nm), giving enhanced ion diffusion/adsorption kinetics. The solid-state supercapacitor based on EMIMBF4 gel electrolyte achieves an ultrahigh specific energy of 101.2 Wh kg(-1) (29.2% enhancement against the use of EMIMTFSI), superior to the most values of recently reported carbon-based supercapacitors. This study opens new horizons to develop functionalized carbons with perfectly ion-comparable pore architecture, moving toward advanced energy storage systems. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Supramolecular hydrogels are assembled through non‐covalent bonds and dynamic covalent bonds. The excellent properties of supramolecular hydrogels, such as conductivity, extensibility, compressibility and elasticity, self‐healing, frost resistance, adhesion and flexibility, making them strong candidates for flexible supercapacitors. This paper reviews the representative progress of electrodes, electrolytes, and supercapacitors based on supramolecular hydrogels and discuss the opportunities and challenges. Supercapacitors (SCs) are studied and used in various fields due to their high power density, fast charging/discharging rate, as well as long cycle life. Compared to other traditional electrode and electrolyte materials, supramolecular hydrogels have great advantages in the application of SCs due to their excellent properties. Unlike covalent bonds, supramolecular systems are assembled through dynamic reversible bonds, including host–guest interactions, ion interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, coordination interactions, etc. The resulting supramolecular hydrogels show some special functions, such as stretching, compression, adhesion, self‐healing, stimulus responsiveness, etc., making them strong candidates for the next generation of energy storage devices. This paper reviews the representative progress of electrodes, electrolytes, and SCs based on supramolecular hydrogels. Besides, the properties of supramolecular hydrogels, such as conductivity, extensibility, compressibility and elasticity, self‐healing, frost resistance, adhesion, and flexibility, are also reviewed to highlight the key role of excellent properties of hydrogel materials in SCs. In addition, this article also discusses the challenges faced by current technologies, hoping to continue promoting future research in this field.

Abstract:The article reviews the recent advances of supercapacitors (SCs) made from various carbon nanomaterials, including activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other porous carbons, with the emphases on material preparation methods, structural features, and electrochemical properties and final SC performance. Supercapacitors (SCs), an important kind of electrochemical energy storage device, are featured with high power density, rapid charging and discharging, and ultralong cycling lifespan and have been widely applied in multiscenario energy storage and output systems, such as portable consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and reservoir setups for green and sustainable energy resources. Among their components, electrode materials are of primary importance in dictating their performances. Owing to good electric conductivity, achievably large specific surface area, low cost, chemical stability, and easy loading with other electrochemically active species, various carbon nanomaterials, including activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other porous carbons, are promising electrode materials in the fabrication of high‐performance SCs. In fact, the past decade has witnessed enormous efforts in the development of high‐performance carbon‐based SC electrode materials and great progresses achieved in the field. In this review, recent advances on these carbon‐based SCs are summarized through a number of selected representative works. In each one, the unique preparation method, structural features, and their correlations to electrochemical properties and final SC performance are presented and discussed. At the end of the review, the challenges and future developing prospects are briefly outlined.

Abstract:Increased energy consumption stimulates the development of various energy types. As a result, the storage of these different types of energy becomes a key issue. Supercapacitors, as one important energy storage device, have gained much attention and owned a wide range of applications by taking advantages of micro-size, lightweight, high power density and long cycle life. From this perspective, numerous studies, especially on electrode materials, have been reported and great progress in the advancement in both the fundamental and applied fields of supercapacitor has been achieved. Herein, a review of recent progress in carbon materials for supercapacitor electrodes is presented. First, the two mechanisms of supercapacitors are briefly introduced. Then, research on carbon-based material electrodes for supercapacitor in recent years is summarized, including different dimensional carbon-based materials and biomass-derived carbon materials. The characteristics and fabrication methods of these materials and their performance as capacitor electrodes are discussed. On the basis of these materials, many supercapacitor devices have been developed. Therefore, in the third part, the supercapacitor devices based on these carbon materials are summarized. A brief overview of two types of conventional supercapacitor according to the charge storage mechanism is compiled, including their development process, the merits or withdraws, and the principle of expanding the potential range. Additionally, another fast-developed capacitor, hybrid ion capacitors as a good compromise between battery and supercapacitor are also discussed. Finally, the future aspects and challenges on the carbon-based materials as supercapacitor electrodes are proposed.

Abstract:This work unveils a design approach for developing carbon aerogels (CAs) from nanocellulose, enhanced by anion modification for supercapacitors. It highlights how anion choice impacts aerogel properties and electrochemical performance, with findings showing specific anions improve surface area and pore distribution, thereby influencing optimal electrolyte selection. Additionally, it introduces innovative electro‐assisted (EA) wetting technique for optimal energy storage. In the pursuit of developing advanced carbon aerogel (CA) supercapacitors, a rational design approach is introduced that utilizes often overlooked conjugated anions to modulate the properties of CAs. Ionic cross‐linking of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogels ensures the preservation of structural integrity even after carbonization. Interestingly, anion selection not only influences the cross‐linking and carbonization processes but also significantly modulates the electrochemical performance of the resulting CAs. This is found to be vital in optimizing the overall supercapacitor performance. Electro‐assisted (EA) wetting of the electrodes procures an adaptive and progressive performance enhancement, heralding the advent of sustainable supercapacitors crafted from earth‐abundant materials.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based hydrogels have attracted great interest for applying in supercapcacitors electrodes, owing to their intriguing properties that combine the structural interconnectivities and the outstanding properties of graphene. However, the pristine graphene hydrogel can not satisfy the high-performance demands, especial in high specific capacitance. Consequently, novel graphene-based composite hydrogels with increased electrochemical properties have been developed. In this mini review, a brief summary of recent progress in the research of the three-dimensional graphene-based composite hydrogel for flexible supercapacitors electrodes materials is presented. The latest progress in the graphene-based composite hydrogel consisting of graphene/metal, graphene/polymer, and atoms doped graphene is discussed. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges in graphene-based composite hydrogel for supercapacitor electrodes are also expressed.

Abstract:Carbon aerogel was prepared by the polycondensation of resorcinol (R) with formaldehyde (F), and sodium carbonate was added as a catalyst (C). Physical properties of carbon aerogel were characterized by infrared spectrometer (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is found that carbon aerogel is an amorphous material with a pearly network structure, and it consists of one or two diffuse X-ray peaks. The results of cyclic voltammetry indicated that the specific capacitance of a carbon aerogel electrode in 6M KOH electrolyte was approximately 110.06Fg−1. Through the galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement, it was found that the electrode is stable in KOH electrolyte, the maximum capacitance of the supercapacitor with carbon aerogel as the electrode active material was 28Fg−1. Besides, the supercapacitor has long cycle life. Thus, it was thought that the carbon aerogel is an excellent electrode material for a supercapcitor.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) usually exist in the form of powder, which is not conducive to electrical conductivity and difficult to be molded, especially into aerogel, tremendously limiting its application in supercapacitors. In this work, the robust cobalt phthalocyanine-based COF/chitosan (CoPc-COF/CS) aerogels were successfully prepared by freeze drying the water solution of CoPc-COF and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp, crosslinker) in chitosan (CS). The CoPc-COF/CS aerogels not only have good mechanical strength and compressibility but also maintain the COF original crystallinity and functionalities. Notably, the porous network structure of CoPc-COF/CS aerogels provides rich active surfaces and short ion diffusion paths. Meanwhile, the rich nitrogen groups on the surface of aerogel and CoN4 centers improve their specific capacitance in the three-electrode system. The obtained CoPc-COF/CS aerogel exhibits excellent capacitive performance (556 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) in the three-electrode system. Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor (CoPc-COF/CS aerogel//AC ASC) assembled using CoPc-COF/CS aerogel and activated carbon (AC) electrodes exhibited a high energy density of 31.9 Wh kg−1 at 750 W kg−1 and good cycle stability (87.5 % after 5000 cycles). The capacitive performances of CoPc-COF/CS aerogel promising for practical applications in supercapacitors.

Among various electrode materials of supercapacitors, carbon materials with porous nanostructure are considered as the emerging and promising candidates. This feature article reviewed the recent advances in different dimensional carbon-based nanoarchitectures for supercapacitors and particularly addressed the novel synthetic strategies to improve the electrochemical performances and corresponding theoretical foundations. The state-of-the-art progress was discussed, and diverse challenges for the electrochemical properties of carbon-based materials were propounded. Abstract:Aerogels, characterized by their exceptional porosity, vast specific surface areas, minimal density, and unparalleled thermal insulation capabilities, have become a focal point of attention in the energy sector over the past decade, particularly in the realms of batteries and supercapacitors. This comprehensive review delves into aerogels and their preparation methods, while reviewing their recent applications in batteries and supercapacitors. It delves deeply into the research and development progress, as well as the application advancements of aerogel materials in separators, electrolytes, and electrodes. Furthermore, this article highlights that the research on aerogels still faces some challenges, such as steep costs, sophisticated production steps, and relatively weak overall mechanical strength. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to further strengthen the fundamental research and technological innovation of aerogel materials, and promote their industrialization process and wide application in the field of energy storage, particularly in the areas of batteries and supercapacitors.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil resources and the gradual intensification of environmental pollution, green and sustainable electrochemical devices have aroused intensive attraction. The supercapacitor, demonstrating fast charging rate, high power densities, and long cycling life, has great application prospects in high power output and backup power supply. Herein, an ultralight and robust MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel is constructed by facile directional freezing and subsequent freeze-drying. Benefiting from the strongly π-π interactions between MXene nanosheets and carbon nanotube, the assembled MXene/carbon nanotube composite aerogel exhibits abundant pore structures, superior conductivity, and good mechanical properties. The electrical conductivity of MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel is up to 1600 S m−1. The MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel can be subjected to 70% compressive strain and retain 85% initial strain over 1000 compress-release cycles. The as-prepared all-solid-state supercapacitor with MXene/carbon nanotube aerogel shows outstanding electrochemical performance (410.7 mF cm−2 at the current density of 0.8 mA cm−2). The supercapacitor is flexible and can be bent from 0 to 90° as the cyclic voltammetry curves are almost consistent. Furthermore, the LED can be lighted by four devices in series.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the wearable electronics, the flexible supercapacitor with high energy density has attracted more and more attentions. From the viewpoint of outdoor application, this research tried to impart the superhydrophobicity to the flexible supercapacitors. The polyvinyl alcohol/HNO3 hydrogel was utilized as the electrolyte, which could achieve self‐healing capability without the freezing/thawing process. Both microscale graphene and nanoscale carbon nanotubes were utilized as the electrode materials. After surface modification, the hydrophobic suspension composed of graphene and carbon nanotubes was sprayed onto the two sides of hydrogel electrolyte to construct superhydrophobic electrode. Hence, the superhydrophobicity endows the supercapacitor outstanding self‐cleaning performance. The all‐in‐one structure endows the supercapacitor improved capacitive ability, outstanding flexibility, good anti‐abrasion property, and reliable self‐healing capability. The combination of superhydrophobicity and flexible energy storage might have a broad application for the outdoor wearable electronics applications.This article is protected by copyright. The aerogels can be assembled into compressive solid‐state supercapacitors demonstrating excellent electrochemical performance and reveal good linear sensitivity as strain sensors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are widely concerned due to their advantages of fast charge and discharge speed, remarkable cycle stability, better safety and friendly environment, and the selection of electrode materials plays a crucial role in affecting the performance of supercapacitors. In this work, chitosan was used to prepare porous carbon aerogel (PCA). Subsequently, nickel‐cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) microspheres with pseudocapacitive properties were loaded on the prepared PCA in the form of nanowires. In general, highly conductive PCA skeletons with large specific surface area provided more active sites for rapid charge and ion transport and might regulate the growth of nanowires. Due to the synergistic effect of NiCo-LDH and PCA, the optimal NiCo-LDH/PCA-30 material exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1362 F g −1 (189 mAh g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 and good cycle stability (capacitance retention of 75 % after 4000 cycles) in a three-electrode system using 3 M KOH as the electrolyte, which were higher than that of pure NiCo-LDH. Moreover, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) based on NiCo-LDH/PCA-30//PCA provided an excellent energy density of 33.1 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 807.3 W kg −1 ), a maximum power density of 7998 W kg −1 and an outstanding cycle retention rate (81.1 % after 5000 cycles). Our investigation has proved that the introducing of porous carbon aerogel could improve the electrochemical performance of NiCo-LDH.
