Abstract:Suffering from a relatively low energy density, carbon-based supercapacitors are restricted in the practical applications for green energy. However, heteroatom-doped hierarchically porous carbon materials (HPCs) can deliver prominent electrochemical performance as an electrode material. Herein, we report a simple two-step method for the synthesis of oxide-doped HPC with an ultra-high specific surface area of 3043.3 m² g−1. In a three-electrode system, the specific capacitance of the oxide-doped HPC is as high as 375 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Also, an aqueous symmetric supercapacitor (AS) assembled with the oxide-doped HPC achieves a high specific capacitance of 353 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and excellent rate performance of 84.9% capacitance retention with current density up to10 A g−1. Most importantly, the energy density of the AS in the 3 M KOH solution can reach up to 17.7 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 600 W kg−1. In 1 M Na2SO4 solution, the specific capacitance of the AS shows no decay after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1. These results reveal that the as-prepared oxide-doped HPC has great potential as an electrode material to realize remarkable electrochemical performance in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Construction of hierarchically porous carbon electrode materials is considered as an efficient strategy for improving the performance of supercapacitors. Nevertheless, how to precisely control the pore structure for preferable improvement the capacitance performance and fabricate in a cost-efficient way is still a scientific challenge. In this paper, an industrial by-product of coal tar pitch is used as precursor to prepare interconnected hierarchically porous carbons, with another domestic waste of eggshell as a pore-forming template and an inner-activator, combined with KOH in-situ activation. The as-prepared porous carbons exhibit large specific surface area ( S BET , 1398–2103 cm 2 g −1 ), well-developed interconnected hierarchically architecture, and excellent electrochemical performance. Among them, the optimal TS-PCE-4 based symmetric supercapacitor possesses a high capacitance of 238 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 with an excellent rate capability, exhibits long cycle stability with capacitance retention of 95.85 % after 10,000 cycles, and delivers energy densities of 8.27–5.47 Wh kg −1 at power density in the range of 125–4925 W kg −1 in 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. This work offers a facile and low-cost route to construct interconnected hierarchically porous carbons for energy storage devices.

Zhu, and co-workers demonstrate a 3D hierarchically porous carbon by introducing a polyurethane sponge to template graphene oxide into a 3D interconnected structure while KOH activation generates abundant micropores in its backbone. As described on page 5222, a supercapacitor assembled with this carbon material achieves a high energy density of 89 W h kg(-1) (64 W h L(-1) ) and outstanding power density due to its shortened ion transport distance in three dimensions.

Abstract:Supercapacitors, with high energy density, rapid charge–discharge capabilities, and long cycling ability, have gained favor among many researchers. However, the universality of high-performance carbon-based electrodes is often constrained by their complex fabrication methods. In this study, the common industrial materials, zinc gluconate and ammonium chloride, are uniformly mixed and subjected to a one-step carbonization strategy to prepare three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon materials with high specific surface area and suitable nitrogen doping. The results show that a specific capacitance of 221 F g−1 is achieved at a current density of 1 A g−1. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor achieves a high energy density of 17 Wh kg−1, and after 50,000 cycles at a current density of 50 A g−1, it retains 82% of its initial capacitance. Moreover, the operating voltage window of the symmetrical device can be easily expanded to 2.5 V when using Et4NBF4 as the electrolyte, resulting in a maximum energy density of up to 153 Wh kg−1, and retaining 85.03% of the initial specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. This method, using common industrial materials as raw materials, provides ideas for the simple preparation of high-performance carbon materials and also provides a promising method for the large-scale production of highly porous carbons.

Abstract:Summary Natural polyelectrolyte complex has designable structure, unique advantages of composite and strong intermolecular or intramolecular force without chemical cross‐linking agents, showing the advantages of good biodegradability and low toxicity. This work reports an application research of natural polyelectrolyte in energy storage device. A multi‐doped hierarchically porous carbon is fabricated from polyelectrolyte of sodium lignosulfonate and chitosan and used as electrode material of supercapacitor. The material characterization reveals its large specific surface area of 1768 m2 g−1, pore volume of 0.94 cm3 g−1 with optimum 3D porous structure, and high heteroatom (oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur) concentration. Benefit from these, the electrodes it made exhibit 354 F g−1 specific capacitance at 1 A g−1 current density, outstanding rate retention of 82.9% at a testing environment of 20 A g−1, and 97.8% capacitance retention in 3 M KOH electrolyte after 10 000 cycles. Using this material, all‐solid symmetric supercapacitor devices show 30.11 Wh kg−1 energy density at 520.88 W kg−1 power density and retains 20.90 Wh kg−1 at 1.03 kW kg−1. These remarkable electrochemical performances prove the promising porous carbon in this work as electrode material with excellent performance for supercapacitors.

Abstract:A hierarchical porous carbon nanorods (HPCRs) with highly interconnected three-dimensional conductivity networks derived from metal-organic frameworks have been successfully synthesized via a simple carbonization method. The resultant HPCRs shows an stable porous structure with abundant micro/mesopore on two-dimensional squared shape carbon nanosheets and also between the closely cross-linked carbon sheets. The electrochemical measurements reveal that the HPCRs materials as electrodes for supercapacitor deliver a high specific capacitance of 274 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) with an enhanced rate capability in basic media. Moreover, a considerable energy density of 6.77 W h kg(-1) at power density of 100 W kg(-1) are exhibited for solid-state symmetric supercapacitor. The assembled symmetric supercapacitor also works well under 0 and - 20 degrees C with a remarkable temperature endurance. The large-scale production of unique hierarchical porous carbon nanorods with high efficiency, low cost and one-step synthesis method will be effective electrode materials in energy storage applications.

Abstract:The hierarchically porous carbon/polyaniline electrodes derived from the nonmetallic part of waste printed circuit board have been synthesized by a convenient carbonization and activation method. A detailed analysis of the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performances of as-prepared composites is presented. As expected, the balanced specific surface area and porous structure manifest their remarkable electrochemical performances. Apparently, the multiple synergistic effects are crucial to simultaneously achieving high capacity and significantly increased stability. As a result, the electrodes display exceptional rate capability, superior cyclic stability, and high specific capacitance (520.0 F/g at 1 A/g). Furthermore, the asymmetrical device possesses an improved energy density of 9.3 Wh/kg with a power density of 62.4 W/kg in H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, a potential mechanism contributing to the superior performance of hierarchically porous carbon/polyaniline composites has been studied in detail. Noteworthy, this study provides a feasible strategy for recycling waste printed circuit boards. Importantly, this approach will provide a path toward the rational synthesis and design of electrode materials for supercapacitors that take both high-performance and cost-effective into account.

Abstract:Enhancing the energy storage capacity of carbon electrodes is a key challenge to developing high-performance supercapacitors. In this study, we design an oxygen-enriched hierarchical nanoporous carbon electrode using laser fabrication and subsequent electrochemical activation, which demonstrates superior energy storage capacity. The carbon electrode is first obtained through the carbonization of phenolic resin under instantaneous high temperature induced by laser, resulting in multiple ion transport channels and a specific capacitance of 64.17 mF cm–2 at the current density of 0.2 mA cm–2. To further improve the performance, electrochemical activation is successfully conducted, leading to a 12.1-fold increase of the specific capacitance of the carbon electrodes. It is found that O–CO-containing functional groups formed during the activation process significantly contribute to the high capacitance enhancement. In a 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, the activated hierarchical nanoporous carbon electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 778.3 mF cm–2 under the same test conditions. Additionally, the abundant porous structure and excellent reversibility of redox reaction of the oxygen-containing functional groups enable the assembled supercapacitor to obtain a specific capacitance of 45.3 mF cm–2 at the current density of 0.4 mA cm–2 and maintain a capacitance retention rate of 93.6% after 10,000 charge–discharge tests. This study presents a strategy to prepare carbon electrode materials with both high performance and excellent stability.

Abstract:Carbon-based supercapacitors have attracted considerable academic and practical interest due to their advantages of low cost, high power density, and superior durability. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of hierarchical porous carbon sheets (HPCSs) featuring a high specific surface area (2788 m2 g-1), derived from pyrrole through a combination of MgO template carbonization and KOH activation. The hierarchical pores with the co-existence of micropores and mesopores were obtained in the HPCSs. Benefiting from the high surface area, well-balanced pore size distribution as well as high conductivity, the prepared HPCSs exhibited a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 226.4 F g-1 at a scan rate of 1 mV s-1 in the electrolyte of 1 M H2SO4 in the two-electrode configuration. Moreover, the excellent electrochemical long-cycle stability has been demonstrated by 10 000 cycles of rapid charging-discharging at 10 A g-1 with a capacitance retention of 97.3%. The electrochemical performance clearly indicates the promising potential of using HPCSs as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors, as one of the most promising energy storage devices, have high power density but low energy density. An appropriate collocation of porous carbon electrodes and ionic liquid electrolytes can improve notably the performance of supercapacitors. Herein, we report a pre-assembly strategy to prepare three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) as the electrode materials for supercapacitors. Three long-chain hydrophilic polymers polyacrylamide (PAM)/gelatin/F127 in water form 3D frameworks by pre-assembly and further form a hydrogel. Then the hydrogel is freeze-dried, carbonized, and etched to form 3D hierarchical porous carbons. The effects of pore volume, pore size, and ratio of mesopores to micropores on the performance of ionic liquid-based supercapacitors are investigated. The porous structure of the prepared HPCs can well match EMIMBF4. Therefore, HPCs as electrode materials for supercapacitors exhibit an excellent specific capacity of 216.5 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and the as-assembled symmetric supercapacitor delivers a superior energy density of 108.6 W h kg-1 at a power density of 961.1 W kg-1. Meanwhile, the symmetric supercapacitor maintains 84.4% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 cycles at 3 A g-1. This work provides a guide for developing new porous carbon materials for supercapacitors with a high energy density.

Abstract:A novel approach is reported to synthesize carbon foams with designable hierarchical porous structures for energy storage. The obtained carbons have an interconnected macroporous channel structure with narrow mesopores (3-5 nm in diameter) embedded throughout the carbon walls, providing low-resistance pathways for ion transportation to internal carbon surfaces. The obtained carbon electrodes can offer a capacitance up to 270 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) and especially an excellent high-rate performance with 222 F g(-1) as the current density increases to 10 A g(-1). Additionally, the electrodes exhibit a long cycling life at a high current density up to 10 A g(-1).
Biowaste-Derived Hierarchical Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Ultrahigh Power Density Supercapacitors

Abstract:Low-cost activated carbons with high capacitive properties remain desirable for supercapacitor applications. Herein, a three-dimensional scaffolding framework of porous carbon nanosheets (PCNSs) has been produced from a typical biowaste, namely, ground cherry calyces, the specific composition and natural structures of which have contributed to the PCNSs having a very large specific surface area of 1612 m(2) g(-1), a hierarchical pore size distribution, a turbostratic carbon structure with a high degree graphitization, and about 10% oxygen and nitrogen heteroatoms. A high specific capacitance of 350 Fg(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) has been achieved in a two-electrode system with 6m KOH; this value is among the highest specific capacitance of biomass-derived carbon materials. More inspiringly, a high energy density of 22.8 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 198.8 W kg(-1) can be obtained with 1m aqueous solution of Li2SO4, and an ultrahigh energy density of 81.4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 446.3W kg(-1) is realized with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate electrolyte.
High-Performance Supercapacitors Based on Graphene/Activated Carbon Hybrid Electrodes Prepared Via Dry Processing

Abstract:Graphene has a high specific surface area and high electrical conductivity, and its addition to activated carbon electrodes should theoretically significantly improve the energy storage performance of supercapacitors. Unfortunately, such an ideal outcome is seldom verified in practical commercial supercapacitor design and production. In this paper, the oxygen-containing functional groups in graphene/activated carbon hybrids, which are prone to induce side reactions, are removed in the material synthesis stage by a special process design, and electrodes with high densities and low internal resistances are prepared by a dry process. On this basis, a carbon-coated aluminum foil collector with a full tab structure is designed and assembled with graphene/activated carbon hybrid electrodes to form a commercial supercapacitor in cylindrical configuration. The experimental tests confirmed that such supercapacitors have high capacity density, power density, low internal resistance (about 0.06 mΩ), good high-current charging/discharging characteristics, and a long lifetime, with more than 80% capacity retention after 10 W cycles.
Hierarchically Porous Carbon Derived from an Aqueous Curable Composition for Supercapacitors

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbon with micropores, mesopores, macropores and high specific surface area for supercapacitors is fabricated from an aqueous curable composition by curing and subsequent carbonization, followed by KOH activation under N-2 atmosphere. With the manipulation of KOH activation to the peculiar morphology developed during carbonization, the external specific surface area grows from 208 to 1151 m(2) g(-1), while the specific surface area of micropores stays at around 1100 m(2) g(-1), leading to the micro/external specific surface area ratio decreases from 5.36 to 0.94. Prepared with KOH/carbon weight ratio at 2.0, the porous carbon with total specific surface area of 1590 m(2) g(-1) and moderate micro/external specific surface area ratio of about 2.0, exhibits intriguing electrochemical performance in 1 M H2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, such as superior specific capacitance (274 F g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (161 F g(-1) remained at 20 A g(-1)) and outstanding cycling stability (no capacitance loss over 5000 cycles). Novel scalable freezing-pore-forming strategy for constructing hierarchically porous carbon materials for supercapacitors

Abstract:Large specific surface area and hierarchically porous texture play a critical role in achieving high-performance carbon electrode materials. Scalable effective pore-forming strategies are expected for constructing porous carbon materials to date. Herein, we designed an easily scalable freezing-and-extraction-and-thermally-drying approach, using low-cost sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the raw material, to prepare CMC-derived hierarchical porous carbons (CHPC) for supercapacitors. Due to the developed pore structure formed by ice microcrystals, CHPC exhibits high specific surface area and outstanding electrochemical energy storage performance. At a current density of 1 A g−1, the specific capacitance of CHPC-1, which was prepared only employing freezing-and-extraction-and-thermally-drying method, reached up to 162.7 F g−1. The CHPC samples prepared when combined with Cu(CH3COO)2 etching or KOH activation, the specific capacitance is up to 196.4 F g−1 (CHPC-2) and 263.8 F g−1 (CHPC-3) at 1 A g−1, respectively. All samples have excellent rate performance with a capacitance retention of about 80% at 40 A g−1. The CHPC-3//CHPC-3 all-solid-state symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 5.9 Wh·kg−1 at a power density of 249.9 W kg−1. This demonstrates that our innovative freezing-and-extraction-and-thermally-drying strategy is an effective avenue for preparing high-performance porous carbon electrode materials.

Abstract:Structural optimization and doping engineering contribute to the promotion of insufficient specific capacitance and energy density for carbon-based supercapacitors. In this manuscript, heteroatom-doped hierarchical porous carbon with small mesopores (2–4 nm) is developed via a simple synthesis by carbonization and activation of an iron nitrate-induced self-assembled chitosan and sodium lignosulfonate composite aerogel . Chitosan and sodium lignosulfonate are utilized as carbon and heteroatom sources, while iron nitrate acts as the template and graphitization catalyst. With alkali activation, a heteroatom-doped hierarchical porous carbon with a high specific surface area, large proportion of small mesopores and well degree of graphitization was obtained, which is less reported in other articles. The optimal sample demonstrates a high specific capacitance (330 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), superior rate performance (270 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 ) and favorable cycling stability (95 % retention after 30,000 cycles). The corresponding symmetric supercapacitors are utilized in three different electrolytes and exhibit the maximum energy density of 40.76 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 450 W kg −1 , as well as excellent rate performance and cycling stability. This study highlights the importance of small mesopores for the performance of carbon-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:High surface area, hierarchically micro/mesoporous carbon materials with interconnected pore structures have significant potential as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor applications. Here, we present the synthesis of ultrahigh surface area hierarchically porous carbon materials, prepared by potassium carbonate (K2CO3) activation of polyacrylamide–hydroxy propyl cellulose (PAM–HPC) hydrogel at high temperatures (500–900 °C), and their energy storage performances in two- and three-electrode cell setup. The carbon material obtained by carbonization of the PAM–HPC hydrogel at 800 °C exhibits an ultrahigh surface area of 3387.2 m2 g–1 with a large pore volume of 1.963 cm3 g–1. The electrode prepared using this material demonstrated excellent supercapacitance performance in the three-electrode system, achieving a high specific capacitance of 545.5 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 current density with superior rate capability and an outstanding cycling stability of 96.3% after 5000 charge–discharge cycles. Furthermore, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor device constructed by using this material showed a high specific capacitance of 102.5 F g–1 at 0.5 A g–1. It delivers a high energy density of 17.2 W h kg–1 at the power density of 550 W kg–1, and a superior cycling stability of 94.2% after 5000 consecutive charge–discharge cycles. The electrochemical properties reported here indicate that hierarchically porous carbons obtained from PAM–HPC hydrogels are promising materials for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Carbon materials are generally preferred as anodes in supercapacitors; however, their low capacitance limits the attained energy density of supercapacitor devices with aqueous electrolytes. Here, we report a low-crystalline iron oxide hydroxide nanoparticle anode with comprehensive electrochemical performance at a wide potential window. The iron oxide hydroxide nanoparticles present capacitances of 1,066 and 716 F g−1 at mass loadings of 1.6 and 9.1 mg cm−2, respectively, a rate capability with 74.6% of capacitance retention at 30 A g−1, and cycling stability retaining 91% of capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The performance is attributed to a dominant capacitive charge-storage mechanism. An aqueous hybrid supercapacitor based on the iron oxide hydroxide anode shows stability during float voltage test for 450 h and an energy density of 104 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1.27 kW kg−1. A packaged device delivers gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of 33.14 Wh kg−1 and 17.24 Wh l−1, respectively.

Abstract:Aqueous supercapacitor shows a narrow operating voltage range because of the limitation of the water electrolysis, resulting in low energy density. In this work, a nanoporous MnO2 entangled hierarchical porous carbon skeleton (simplified to MHPC) has been successfully prepared. Aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor has been assembled by employing the MHPC as a positive electrode, a hierarchical porous carbon skeleton (HPC) as a negative electrode, and a neutral Na2SO4 aqueous solution as electrolyte. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor can be stably charged in an aqueous medium in a wide voltage range of 0-2.5 V and delivers a maximum energy density of 20.8Wh/kg at a power density of 0.25 kW/kg and 25 kW/kg at an energy density of 11.1 Wh/kg in a 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution. This strategy provides a new idea for developing high-energy supercapacitor.
