Abstract:Increased energy consumption stimulates the development of various energy types. As a result, the storage of these different types of energy becomes a key issue. Supercapacitors, as one important energy storage device, have gained much attention and owned a wide range of applications by taking advantages of micro-size, lightweight, high power density and long cycle life. From this perspective, numerous studies, especially on electrode materials, have been reported and great progress in the advancement in both the fundamental and applied fields of supercapacitor has been achieved. Herein, a review of recent progress in carbon materials for supercapacitor electrodes is presented. First, the two mechanisms of supercapacitors are briefly introduced. Then, research on carbon-based material electrodes for supercapacitor in recent years is summarized, including different dimensional carbon-based materials and biomass-derived carbon materials. The characteristics and fabrication methods of these materials and their performance as capacitor electrodes are discussed. On the basis of these materials, many supercapacitor devices have been developed. Therefore, in the third part, the supercapacitor devices based on these carbon materials are summarized. A brief overview of two types of conventional supercapacitor according to the charge storage mechanism is compiled, including their development process, the merits or withdraws, and the principle of expanding the potential range. Additionally, another fast-developed capacitor, hybrid ion capacitors as a good compromise between battery and supercapacitor are also discussed. Finally, the future aspects and challenges on the carbon-based materials as supercapacitor electrodes are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Supercapacitor has gained significant attention due to its fast charging/discharging speed, high power density and long-term cycling stability in contrast to traditional batteries. In this review, state-of-the-art achievements on supercapacitor electrode based on carbon materials is summarized. In all-carbon composite materials part, various carbon materials including graphene, carbon nanotube, carbon foam and carbon cloth are composited to fabricate larger specific surface area and higher electrical conductivity electrodes. However, obstacles of low power density as well as low cycling life still remain to be addressed. In metal-oxide composites part, carbon nanotube, graphene, carbon fiber fabric and hollow carbon nanofibers combine with MnO 2 respectively, which significantly address drawbacks of all-carbon material electrodes. Additionally, TiO 2 is incorporated into graphene electrode to overcome the low mechanical flexibility of graphene. In organic active compounds part, conducting polymers are employed to combinate with carbon materials to fabricate high specific capacitance, long-term thermal stability and outstanding electroconductivity flexible textile supercapacitors. In each part, innovation, fabrication process and performance of the resulting composites are demonstrated. Finally, future directions that could enhance the performance of supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are currently attracting intensive attention because they can provide energy density by orders of magnitude higher than dielectric capacitors, greater power density, and longer cycling ability than batteries. The main challenge for supercapacitors is to develop them with high energy density that is close to that of a current rechargeable battery, while maintaining their inherent characteristics of high power and long cycling life. Consequently, much research has been devoted to enhance the performance of supercapacitors by either maximizing the specific capacitance and/or increasing the cell voltage. The latest advances in the exploration and development of new supercapacitor systems and related electrode materials are highlighted. Also, the prospects and challenges in practical application are analyzed, aiming to give deep insights into the material science and electrochemical fields.

Abstract:Carbon materials with large specific surface areas, high durability, and unique internal structure have made them as a research hotspot in energy storage. Biomass, the only renewable carbon source, is abundant, cost effective and high in carbon content, which have been familiarly used in the production of high-performance carbon materials on an industrial scale. Many studies have shown that biomass-derived carbon materials (bio-carbons) have received increasing attention for their greater ability in mitigating environmental problems and promoting sustainable energy storage applications. The present review has overviewed the current progress in the application of bio-carbons as electrodes for supercapacitors. Biomass source and preparation process of bio-carbons were significantly expounded. The influence of heteroatom doping, specific surface area, and pore structure on bio-carbons' electrochemical properties (e.g., specific capacitance, cycle life) have been discussed. Finally, the promising future developments, needed directions and present challenges of bio-carbons in the field of supercapacitors are summarized, providing helpful inspiration for the future development and for efficient utilization of bio-carbons.

Abstract:The article reviews the recent advances of supercapacitors (SCs) made from various carbon nanomaterials, including activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other porous carbons, with the emphases on material preparation methods, structural features, and electrochemical properties and final SC performance. Supercapacitors (SCs), an important kind of electrochemical energy storage device, are featured with high power density, rapid charging and discharging, and ultralong cycling lifespan and have been widely applied in multiscenario energy storage and output systems, such as portable consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and reservoir setups for green and sustainable energy resources. Among their components, electrode materials are of primary importance in dictating their performances. Owing to good electric conductivity, achievably large specific surface area, low cost, chemical stability, and easy loading with other electrochemically active species, various carbon nanomaterials, including activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other porous carbons, are promising electrode materials in the fabrication of high‐performance SCs. In fact, the past decade has witnessed enormous efforts in the development of high‐performance carbon‐based SC electrode materials and great progresses achieved in the field. In this review, recent advances on these carbon‐based SCs are summarized through a number of selected representative works. In each one, the unique preparation method, structural features, and their correlations to electrochemical properties and final SC performance are presented and discussed. At the end of the review, the challenges and future developing prospects are briefly outlined.

Abstract:Wide-potential supercapacitor systems are highly anticipated to put aside the low-energy roadblock caused by the finite electrolysis voltage (1.23 V). However, poor electrolyte kinetics within the popular activated carbon electrodes usually downgrades the inherent high-power supply and long-cycle tolerance. To address this issue, multimodal porous carbon nanostructures are fabricated by the spontaneous cross-coupling between tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (network joint) and four aromatic amines (chain motif) with varying bond dissociation energies, followed by temperature-programmed alkali thermolysis. The representative electrode with a broad ion-accessible platform (2539 m(2) g(-1)) stands out by virtue of substantial electrosorption spaces (<1 nm micropores) and multi-level pore highways nested in open macroporous voids, enabling an instant ion-transport kinetics response (0.40 Omega s(-0.5)) and remarkable rate capability (80.4% capacitance retention up to 20 A g(-1)) in the H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, a LiOTf/NaOTf hybrid water-in-salt electrolyte is developed here to shift the water-splitting potential, wherein double Li+/Na+ cations can weaken strong Coulombic interactions for low migration barrier and dense interface accumulation. Consequently, the upgraded symmetric device using such concentrated aqueous medium, displays a boosted energy capacity of 39.2 Wh kg(-1)@550 W kg(-1), an extraordinary power response of 22 kW kg(-1) under high-energy delivery up to 28.2 Wh kg(-1), and a durable service lifespan (85.5% energy retention over 10 000 successive cycles). This inspiring work provides structural insights for designing carbon electrodes adaptive to safe, wide-potential but kinetically sluggish electrolytes, realizing comprehensive energy-power improvements in supercapacitors.

Abstract:As one of the promising energy storage and conversion systems, supercapacitors (SCs) are highly favored owing to their high power density and good service life. Among all the key components of supercapacitor devices, the design and investigation of electrode materials play an essential role in determining the whole electrochemical charge storage performance. Recently, nanocarbon-based materials (e.g., graphene, carbon dots, graphene quantum dots, etc.) have been widely used as SC electrode materials because of their good physical structure and chemical properties, providing a new route to further improve the energy density and life span of SCs. Here, we review the latest progress of nanocarbon-based materials (including nanocarbon and nanocarbon-based composite materials) as electrode materials in SCs application. The recent progress of carbon dots, graphene, carbon nanotubes, and other nanocarbon materials electrodes is summarized, while the capacitance and energy density of the above nanocarbon electrodes still need to be improved. Then, the preparation and performance of nanocarbon-based composite electrodes comprising transition metal oxides, conductive polymer, and metal–organic framework derived porous carbon are reviewed. Finally, we outline major challenges and propose some ideas on building better nanocarbon-based SC electrodes.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Porous carbon materials have demonstrated exceptional performance in various energy and environment-related applications. Recently, research on supercapacitors has been steadily increasing, and porous carbon materials have emerged as the most significant electrode material for supercapacitors. Nonetheless, the high cost and potential for environmental pollution associated with the preparation process of porous carbon materials remain significant issues. This paper presents an overview of common methods for preparing porous carbon materials, including the carbon-activation method, hard-templating method, soft-templating method, sacrificial-templating method, and self-templating method. Additionally, we also review several emerging methods for the preparation of porous carbon materials, such as copolymer pyrolysis, carbohydrate self-activation, and laser scribing. We then categorise porous carbons based on their pore sizes and the presence or absence of heteroatom doping. Finally, we provide an overview of recent applications of porous carbon materials as electrodes for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitor is a promising energy storage device, so a lot of researches have focused on the design and control of carbon materials. In recent years, carbon materials have achieved rapid developments in the field of supercapacitors. A variety of synthetic strategies are emerging, which greatly enriches the synthesis technology and makes it possible to fabricate carbon materials with complex structures. This review focuses on the recent design and control of carbon materials for supercapacitors. Here, the different dimensions of carbon materials are discussed and analyzed to understand their advantages and disadvantages in morphologies. And various synthesis methods were developed to overcome these shortcomings of carbon materials to achieve a breakthrough in performances. These synthetic methods are systematically classified, and each one is illustrated with representative examples. To obtain high-performance electrode materials in supercapacitors, the relationships between the synthesis methods, the structures of carbon material and the electrochemical performances were discussed in depth to accurately control morphologies of carbon materials. Current emerging challenges are summarized, and some directions are proposed to solve it to improve the performances of supercapacitors in the future.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have been regarded as promising and reliable energy storage devices attributed to their high power density, outstanding rate capability and ultralong lifespan, etc. Nonetheless, their practical applicability is still hampered by the unsatisfactory energy density and significant efforts have been undertaken to boost the energy density. As a new and revolutionary derivative member of the carbon family, carbon dots (CDs) stand out in the aspects of electrical conductivity, smaller size, abundant and tunable surface groups, facile fabrication, thus endowing them with great potential in supercapacitors. This review presents the properties of CDs favoring capacitive behavior, and then summarize the advances of CDs's applications in supercapacitors as an electrode material and modifier (including hybrid with carbon, conducting polymers, metal compounds, etc.). The corresponding theoretical calculations are outlined. Finally, the current challenges and prospects for CDs in supercapacitors are proposed to provide perspectives for further development of CDs-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:Abstract Due to their rapid power delivery, fast charging, and long cycle life, supercapacitors have become an important energy storage technology recently. However, to meet the continuously increasing demands in the fields of portable electronics, transportation, and future robotic technologies, supercapacitors with higher energy densities without sacrificing high power densities and cycle stabilities are still challenged. Transition metal compounds (TMCs) possessing high theoretical capacitance are always used as electrode materials to improve the energy densities of supercapacitors. However, the power densities and cycle lives of such TMCs-based electrodes are still inferior due to their low intrinsic conductivity and large volume expansion during the charge/discharge process, which greatly impede their large-scale applications. Most recently, the ideal integrating of TMCs and conductive carbon skeletons is considered as an effective solution to solve the above challenges. Herein, we summarize the recent developments of TMCs/carbon hybrid electrodes which exhibit both high energy/power densities from the aspects of structural design strategies, including conductive carbon skeleton, interface engineering, and electronic structure. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are also highlighted so as to provide strategies for the high energy/power TMCs/carbon-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have gained significant attention owing to their exceptional performance in terms of energy density and power density, making them suitable for various applications, such as mobile devices, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage systems. This review focuses on recent advancements in the utilization of 0-dimensional to 3-dimensional carbon network materials as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor devices. This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the potential of carbon-based materials in enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The combination of these materials with other cutting-edge materials, such as Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Black Phosphorus (BP), and perovskite nanoarchitectures, has been extensively studied to achieve a wide operating potential window. The combination of these materials synchronizes their different charge-storage mechanisms to attain practical and realistic applications. The findings of this review indicate that hybrid composite electrodes with 3D structures exhibit the best potential in terms of overall electrochemical performance. However, this field faces several challenges and promising research directions. This study aimed to highlight these challenges and provide insights into the potential of carbon-based materials in supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Due to the global warming and energy depletion issues, developing sustainable and renewable energy resources has become a critical concern among researchers. The constantly growing demand for energy has urged researchers to develop highly improved energy storage devices. In relation to relevant energy storage systems, supercapacitor technology has drawn burgeoning interest in recent years owing to its environmentally safe and cost effective advantages. Especially, its high power density (>10 kW/kg), fast charge/discharge characteristics, and excellent cycle stability are highly beneficial in storing renewable energy. Currently, the rapid development of portable electronic devices and the expanding renewable energy systems have paved the way for energy storage systems to play an important role in human society. Many significant breakthroughs for the next-generation supercapacitors have been achieved in terms of material synthesis, device innovations, and multifunctional device designs. Therefore, this paper summarizes the latest progress on new materials and novel device assemblies. First, to fully assess the effect of device assembly on supercapacitor performance, five types of supercapacitor structures and their assembly principles are discussed in detail, including the three-electrode (also known as semi-battery) device, two-electrode supercapacitor, flexible solid-state supercapacitor, fiber supercapacitor, and planar (micro-) supercapacitor. Among them, the three-electrode system and the two-electrode device are still the most widely used types at present. The three-electrode cell is suitable for characterizing electrode materials or investigating the electrochemical storage processes. The structure of a two-electrode system is closer to an actual supercapacitor. Other specially designed cells, which are fabricated with the aim of meeting the requirements of flexible and lightweight energy sources, have also been proposed in recent years. The results indicate that the structural innovative design could provide a fascinating way to enhance the energy density of devices while also holding huge potential to enhance the compatibility between supercapacitor component and various portable or wearable electronic devices. A careful interpretation and rigorous scrutiny of the electrochemical characteristics of every supercapacitor is also conducted in this work. Moreover, the design principles for enhancing the supercapacitor performance are highlighted through a comprehensive analysis of the literature. The main challenges in the structural innovations for enhancing the electrochemical performance are analyzed. The solutions to overcome these challenges are proposed. Second, supercapacitors still suffer from a lower energy density compared with Li-ion batteries. Among various efforts to build high-performance supercapacitors in recent years, major improvements have been made in electrode materials with rational designs. This review article also examines the latest methodologies and performance evaluation metrics for several emerging electrode materials in terms of their improved electrochemical properties, including carbon materials, binary transition metal oxides (NiCo2O4, Ni3V2O8, and Co3V2O8, among others), transition metal chalcogenides/selenide/phosphide positive electrodes, and VN, Fe2O3 negative electrode materials. This paper also highlights the electrode material design principle, which is the fundamental understanding of the relationships between structural design, structural properties and components of electrode materials and their electrochemical performances. Moreover, we also summarized the latest contributions and progress in multifunctional supercapacitors, which include the transparent flexible supercapacitor, self-healable supercapacitor, piezoelectric supercapacitors, self-charging supercapacitors, and so on. Several methods to realize the abilities of transparent, folded, wearable, self-healable, and even self-chargeable supercapacitors with almost no performance degradation are discussed. This paper also analyzes the compatibility of a multifunctional supercapacitor with industrial manufacturing, and offers a paradigm for developing portable and wearable energy storage devices and systems. Furthermore, the operating principles, system design/engineering, and the rational optimization of the multifunctional supercapacitors are also analyzed in this review. Finally, the major challenges faced by next-generation supercapacitors, along with the future research prospects, are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Supercapacitors became more and more important recently in the area of energy storage and conversion. Their large power deliveries abilities, high stability and environmental friendliness characteristics draw tremendous attention in high-power applications such as public transit networks. Carbonaceous materials with unique surface and electrochemical properties were widely used in supercapacitors as electrode materials. This review focuses on the developments in supercapacitor electrodes made from carbonaceous materials recently, their working principle and evaluation parameters were summarized briefly. The preparation methods and electrochemical properties of different carbonaceous materials were compared and classified. It was found that the surface situation (e.g., porous structure, hydrophilic) of carbonaceous materials strongly affect the electrochemical performances of supercapacitor. So far, active carbons would be the most applicable carbonaceous electrode materials owing to their good chemical stability and conductivity, extensive accessibility inexpensiveness. But their energy densities still fall behind practical demands. Both theoretical calculations and experimental studies show that surface modification and doping of carbonaceous materials can not only optimize their pore size, structure, conductivity and surface properties, but also can introduce extra pseudocapacitance into these materials. Considering global environmental pollution and energy shortage problems nowadays, we sincerely suggested that future work should focus on domestic, medical and industrial wastes residues derived carbonaceous materials and scaled production process such as reactors and exhaust gas treatment.

Abstract:Supercapacitor has received considerable attention as a promising energy storage device due to its fast charging, excellent cyclic stability, and high-power density. In order to fully realize its potential to bridge the energy storage devices, there is a strong need to have a deeper understanding in the relationship between capacitance and pore sizes of the electrode materials, in particular mesopores. As a result of its high surface area and abundant accessible active site, ease of mass/charge transfer, mesoporous material has triggered immense attention as potential material for energy-related applications. Herein, special attention will be focused on the machine learning application to better understand the pore size of the electrode material and electrolyte ion in nanopores. Furthermore, the fundamental understanding of the relationship between the pore sizes and capacitance is also discussed. We also summarize the current state-of-the-art synthetic methods of mesoporous carbon, metal oxide, metal phosphide, and metal sulfides as supercapacitor electrode materials. Some pivotal scientific challenges and perspectives on the understanding of the role of mesopores in the material are highlighted and present, respectively.

Abstract:Graphene has recently attracted a wide range of research interests due to its rigorous two-dimensional structure and extraordinary electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. As a conductive agent, an activated carbon supercapacitor can obtain better performance. This paper summarizes the latest research progress, mainly from two aspects: (1) the preparation of an activated carbon base for a supercapacitor based on waste sugar solution and the relationship between pore structure and activation parameters, and (2) the application of the two-dimensional materials graphene and its composite materials in electric double-layer capacitors, graphene–polymer composite tantalum capacitors, graphene–transition metal oxide composite tantalum capacitors, and asymmetric super capacitors. The studies found that graphene and its composite materials have obvious advantages in improving the cycle efficiency, conversion rate, and energy density of supercapacitors, the overall energy efficiency of mechanical systems, and the chemical properties of nanoelectronics. Therefore, it is urgent to summarize these works in order to promote the next development. Graphene is expected to be effectively and environmentally quantified in the near future, and its application in supercapacitors will be further expanded and matured.

Abstract:The burgeoning global economy during the past decades give rise to the continuous increase in fossil fuels consumption and rapid growth of CO2 emission, which demands an urgent exploration into green and sustainable devices for energy storage and power management. Supercapacitors based on activated carbon electrodes are promising systems for highly efficient energy harvesting and power supply, but their promotion is hindered by the moderate energy density compared with batteries. Therefore, scalable conversion of CO2 into novel carbon nanostructures offers a powerful alternative to tackle both issues: mitigating the greenhouse effect caused by redundant atmospheric CO2 and providing carbon materials with enhanced electrochemical performances. In this tutorial review, the techniques, opportunities and barriers in the design and fabrication of advanced carbon materials using CO2 as feedstock as well as their impact on the energy-storage performances of supercapacitors are critically examined. In particular, the chemical aspects of various CO2 conversion reactions are highlighted to establish a detailed understanding for the science and technology involved in the microstructural evolution, surface engineering and porosity control of CO2-converted carbon nanostructures. Finally, the prospects and challenges associated with the industrialization of CO2 conversion and their practical application in supercapacitors are also discussed.

Abstract:Supercapacitors, with ultrahigh power density, superior rate capability, long-term cyclability, and exceptional safety, are regarded as one highly competitive candidate of electrochemical energy storage devices, filling the gap between batteries and conventional capacitors. Despite of tremendous effort, elaborated screening of high-performance electrode materials, e.g., graphene, is still intensively required. In this review, we describe the most recent progress in the research and development of graphene-based materials for high-performance and new-concept supercapacitors for the targeted applications in next-generation and smart electronics. First, the design and fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors, including electrical double layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors and hybrid supercapacitors, were summarized in term of the charge storage mechanism. Second, new-concept supercapacitors with multiple functionalities of high-voltage, fiber-shape, microscale and shape-diversity in order to fulfill the requirements of future electronics are reviewed. Accordingly, special emphasis is given to the structure-dependent-performance effects of pores, hybridization, dimensionalities of graphene-based materials on performance of supercapacitors, and tremendous potential of graphene-based planar micro-supercapacitors for the direct seamlessly integration with versatile micro-electronics. Finally, perspectives and challenges of graphene-based supercapacitors are briefly discussed.
