Abstract:The pursuit of efficient and sustainable energy storage solutions has fueled significant interest in the development of advanced materials for supercapacitors. Among these, two-dimensional (2D) materials undoubtingly have emerged as promising candidates due to their unique structural and electrochemical properties. To address the inherent challenges such as restacking, limited ion-accessibility, limited scalability, stability under operational conditions, and the intricate balance between surface area and conductivity that hinder the practical application of 2D materials, this article delves into innovative approaches and emerging strategies and prospects that aim to enhance their performance and durability. A systematic exploration of synthesis methods, structural characteristics, and electrochemical performance as supercapacitor electrodes of key 2D materials, including graphene, MXenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), black phosphorous and phosphorene and their composites has been discussed. The discussion will extend to recent breakthroughs and innovations, shedding light on how researchers are leveraging the unique properties of 2D materials to overcome existing challenges in supercapacitor technology. Beyond mere documentation, this review seeks to inspire future research directions, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of energy storage technologies towards a more sustainable and efficient future.

Abstract:Increased energy consumption stimulates the development of various energy types. As a result, the storage of these different types of energy becomes a key issue. Supercapacitors, as one important energy storage device, have gained much attention and owned a wide range of applications by taking advantages of micro-size, lightweight, high power density and long cycle life. From this perspective, numerous studies, especially on electrode materials, have been reported and great progress in the advancement in both the fundamental and applied fields of supercapacitor has been achieved. Herein, a review of recent progress in carbon materials for supercapacitor electrodes is presented. First, the two mechanisms of supercapacitors are briefly introduced. Then, research on carbon-based material electrodes for supercapacitor in recent years is summarized, including different dimensional carbon-based materials and biomass-derived carbon materials. The characteristics and fabrication methods of these materials and their performance as capacitor electrodes are discussed. On the basis of these materials, many supercapacitor devices have been developed. Therefore, in the third part, the supercapacitor devices based on these carbon materials are summarized. A brief overview of two types of conventional supercapacitor according to the charge storage mechanism is compiled, including their development process, the merits or withdraws, and the principle of expanding the potential range. Additionally, another fast-developed capacitor, hybrid ion capacitors as a good compromise between battery and supercapacitor are also discussed. Finally, the future aspects and challenges on the carbon-based materials as supercapacitor electrodes are proposed.

Abstract:Over the last decade, considerable attention has been focused on 2D materials such as metal oxide, and hydroxides, graphitic carbon nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXene, and hexagonal boron nitride are primarily after graphene exploration. In recent times, several new 2D materials, including phosphorene, antimonene, germanene, silicene, and siloxene, have been identified as possessing unique and desirable traits of significant mechanical resilience, significant surface area to volume ratio, and excellent electrical conductivity. As a result of these characteristics, these novel 2D materials are excellent candidates intended for utilization in supercapacitors. The review highlights the potential of phosphorene, silicene, germanene, and siloxene as energy storage materials, focusing on their suitability as supercapacitor electrodes. The novel 2D materials are synthesized using various techniques, with limited success reported for synthesizing freestanding sheets. Although theoretical research aimed at improving their supercapacitive nature is advancing, practical evidence remains minimal. However, there is great optimism that the optimization of syntheses techniques will lead to the practical application of these novel materials for effective energy storage in the future.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors, as one of most promising emerging energy storage devices, are of great interest owing to their high power density with great mechanical compliance, making them very suitable as power back-ups for future stretchable electronics. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, including the quasi-2D graphene and inorganic graphene-like materials (IGMs), have been greatly explored to providing huge potential for the development of flexible supercapacitors with higher electrochemical performance. This review article is devoted to recent progresses in engineering 2D nanomaterials for flexible supercapacitors, which survey the evolution of electrode materials, recent developments in 2D nanomaterials and their hybrid nanostructures with regulated electrical properties, and the new planar configurations of flexible supercapacitors. Furthermore, a brief discussion on future directions, challenges and opportunities in this fascinating area is also provided.

Abstract:MXene is a type of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide and nitride, and its promising energy storage materials highlight its characteristics of high density, high metal-like conductivity, tunable terminals, and charge storage mechanisms known as pseudo-alternative capacitance. MXenes are a class of 2D materials synthesized by chemical etching of the A element in MAX phases. Since they were first discovered more than 10 years ago, the number of distinct MXenes has grown substantially to include numerous MnXn−1 (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5), solid solutions (ordered and disordered), and vacancy solids. To date, MXenes used in energy storage system applications have been broadly synthesized, and this paper summarizes the current developments, successes, and challenges of using MXenes in supercapacitors. This paper also reports the synthesis approaches, various compositional issues, material and electrode topology, chemistry, and hybridization of MXene with other active materials. The present study also summarizes MXene’s electrochemical properties, applicability in pliant-structured electrodes, and energy storage capabilities when using aqueous/non-aqueous electrolytes. Finally, we conclude by discussing how to reshape the face of the latest MXene and what to consider when designing the next generation of MXene-based capacitors and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have been regarded as promising and reliable energy storage devices attributed to their high power density, outstanding rate capability and ultralong lifespan, etc. Nonetheless, their practical applicability is still hampered by the unsatisfactory energy density and significant efforts have been undertaken to boost the energy density. As a new and revolutionary derivative member of the carbon family, carbon dots (CDs) stand out in the aspects of electrical conductivity, smaller size, abundant and tunable surface groups, facile fabrication, thus endowing them with great potential in supercapacitors. This review presents the properties of CDs favoring capacitive behavior, and then summarize the advances of CDs's applications in supercapacitors as an electrode material and modifier (including hybrid with carbon, conducting polymers, metal compounds, etc.). The corresponding theoretical calculations are outlined. Finally, the current challenges and prospects for CDs in supercapacitors are proposed to provide perspectives for further development of CDs-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors, with ultrahigh power density, superior rate capability, long-term cyclability, and exceptional safety, are regarded as one highly competitive candidate of electrochemical energy storage devices, filling the gap between batteries and conventional capacitors. Despite of tremendous effort, elaborated screening of high-performance electrode materials, e.g., graphene, is still intensively required. In this review, we describe the most recent progress in the research and development of graphene-based materials for high-performance and new-concept supercapacitors for the targeted applications in next-generation and smart electronics. First, the design and fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors, including electrical double layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors and hybrid supercapacitors, were summarized in term of the charge storage mechanism. Second, new-concept supercapacitors with multiple functionalities of high-voltage, fiber-shape, microscale and shape-diversity in order to fulfill the requirements of future electronics are reviewed. Accordingly, special emphasis is given to the structure-dependent-performance effects of pores, hybridization, dimensionalities of graphene-based materials on performance of supercapacitors, and tremendous potential of graphene-based planar micro-supercapacitors for the direct seamlessly integration with versatile micro-electronics. Finally, perspectives and challenges of graphene-based supercapacitors are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are currently attracting intensive attention because they can provide energy density by orders of magnitude higher than dielectric capacitors, greater power density, and longer cycling ability than batteries. The main challenge for supercapacitors is to develop them with high energy density that is close to that of a current rechargeable battery, while maintaining their inherent characteristics of high power and long cycling life. Consequently, much research has been devoted to enhance the performance of supercapacitors by either maximizing the specific capacitance and/or increasing the cell voltage. The latest advances in the exploration and development of new supercapacitor systems and related electrode materials are highlighted. Also, the prospects and challenges in practical application are analyzed, aiming to give deep insights into the material science and electrochemical fields.

Abstract:Abstract Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials are excellent supercapacitor electrode candidates with intriguing physical and chemical properties. As a typical three-dimensional printing technique, direct ink writing (DIW) provides a new platform to bridge the gap between 2D materials and advanced supercapacitor electrodes. In the current review, recent progresses in DIW of 2D materials for supercapacitor applications are systematically presented, in which basic DIW processes, key scientific/technical points and corresponding strategies are highlighted. Ink fabrication and optimization based on 2D materials are discussed for supercapacitors, and recent advances in DIW of a variety of 2D material (including graphene, transition metal carbides and/or nitride (MXene), transition metal dichalcogenide and others)-based supercapacitor electrodes are offered. Furthermore, conclusions along with a brief discussion on challenges and opportunities of DIW-manufactured 2D materials are also provided for future supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have attracted increasing attention as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). In this review, basic knowledge and information of 2D TMD‐based SCs are introduced, recent advances in strategies focusing on doping, structure, composition, phase, configuration, electrolyte to improve their supercapacitor performance are summarized and future perspectives are proposed. Recently, the development of new materials and devices has become the main research focus in the field of energy. Supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted significant attention due to their high power density, fast charge/discharge rate, and excellent cycling stability. With a lamellar structure, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) emerge as electrode materials for SCs. Although many 2D TMDs with excellent energy storage capability have been reported, further optimization of electrode materials and devices is still needed for competitive electrochemical performance. Previous reviews have focused on the performance of 2D TMDs as electrode materials in SCs, especially on their modification. Herein, the effects of element doping, morphology, structure and phase, composite, hybrid configuration, and electrolyte are emphatically discussed on the overall performance of 2D TMDs‐based SCs from the perspective of device optimization. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of 2D TMDs‐based SCs in the field are highlighted, and personal perspectives on methods and ideas for high‐performance energy storage devices are provided.

Abstract:The ongoing research on the development of promising electrode materials for supercapacitors seeks to further enhance their energy density values and overall performance, thus enabling them to be utilised in a variety of electronic applications. Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) is a promising candidate to be explored as an electrode material in supercapacitors. This article is an initiative to perform a review focusing on the recent advancements in the development of WS 2 and its nanostructured composites for supercapacitor applications. The review provides an overview of the synthesis methods used to create WS 2 nanostructures, their structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties, and their potential future storage capabilities. Additionally, the article discusses the impact of substrate and electrolyte on the electrochemical performance of WS 2 -based nanostructures while employed in the supercapacitor application.

Abstract:Researchers in several sectors, including those developing energy storage systems with electrodes for supercapacitors and batteries, are fascinated by MXenes, a new class of 2D materials . Increased usage of MXene and its composites in supercapacitors has been attributed to its astonishing mechanical, electrical, optical, and electrochemical characteristics. In this article, we review and discuss recent advancements and trends in experimental studies on MXene and its composites for use in supercapacitor applications. First, we discuss several preparation methods for obtaining high-quality MXene and its composites with transition metal sulfides/oxides and bimetal sulfides/oxides. Then, we review a few critical issues that hamper the use of MXene in supercapacitor applications. These include the current drawbacks and challenges related to flexibility, internal diffusion resistance, and material oxidation of MXene-based supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Due to the global warming and energy depletion issues, developing sustainable and renewable energy resources has become a critical concern among researchers. The constantly growing demand for energy has urged researchers to develop highly improved energy storage devices. In relation to relevant energy storage systems, supercapacitor technology has drawn burgeoning interest in recent years owing to its environmentally safe and cost effective advantages. Especially, its high power density (>10 kW/kg), fast charge/discharge characteristics, and excellent cycle stability are highly beneficial in storing renewable energy. Currently, the rapid development of portable electronic devices and the expanding renewable energy systems have paved the way for energy storage systems to play an important role in human society. Many significant breakthroughs for the next-generation supercapacitors have been achieved in terms of material synthesis, device innovations, and multifunctional device designs. Therefore, this paper summarizes the latest progress on new materials and novel device assemblies. First, to fully assess the effect of device assembly on supercapacitor performance, five types of supercapacitor structures and their assembly principles are discussed in detail, including the three-electrode (also known as semi-battery) device, two-electrode supercapacitor, flexible solid-state supercapacitor, fiber supercapacitor, and planar (micro-) supercapacitor. Among them, the three-electrode system and the two-electrode device are still the most widely used types at present. The three-electrode cell is suitable for characterizing electrode materials or investigating the electrochemical storage processes. The structure of a two-electrode system is closer to an actual supercapacitor. Other specially designed cells, which are fabricated with the aim of meeting the requirements of flexible and lightweight energy sources, have also been proposed in recent years. The results indicate that the structural innovative design could provide a fascinating way to enhance the energy density of devices while also holding huge potential to enhance the compatibility between supercapacitor component and various portable or wearable electronic devices. A careful interpretation and rigorous scrutiny of the electrochemical characteristics of every supercapacitor is also conducted in this work. Moreover, the design principles for enhancing the supercapacitor performance are highlighted through a comprehensive analysis of the literature. The main challenges in the structural innovations for enhancing the electrochemical performance are analyzed. The solutions to overcome these challenges are proposed. Second, supercapacitors still suffer from a lower energy density compared with Li-ion batteries. Among various efforts to build high-performance supercapacitors in recent years, major improvements have been made in electrode materials with rational designs. This review article also examines the latest methodologies and performance evaluation metrics for several emerging electrode materials in terms of their improved electrochemical properties, including carbon materials, binary transition metal oxides (NiCo2O4, Ni3V2O8, and Co3V2O8, among others), transition metal chalcogenides/selenide/phosphide positive electrodes, and VN, Fe2O3 negative electrode materials. This paper also highlights the electrode material design principle, which is the fundamental understanding of the relationships between structural design, structural properties and components of electrode materials and their electrochemical performances. Moreover, we also summarized the latest contributions and progress in multifunctional supercapacitors, which include the transparent flexible supercapacitor, self-healable supercapacitor, piezoelectric supercapacitors, self-charging supercapacitors, and so on. Several methods to realize the abilities of transparent, folded, wearable, self-healable, and even self-chargeable supercapacitors with almost no performance degradation are discussed. This paper also analyzes the compatibility of a multifunctional supercapacitor with industrial manufacturing, and offers a paradigm for developing portable and wearable energy storage devices and systems. Furthermore, the operating principles, system design/engineering, and the rational optimization of the multifunctional supercapacitors are also analyzed in this review. Finally, the major challenges faced by next-generation supercapacitors, along with the future research prospects, are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Abstract Supercapacitor has gained significant attention due to its fast charging/discharging speed, high power density and long-term cycling stability in contrast to traditional batteries. In this review, state-of-the-art achievements on supercapacitor electrode based on carbon materials is summarized. In all-carbon composite materials part, various carbon materials including graphene, carbon nanotube, carbon foam and carbon cloth are composited to fabricate larger specific surface area and higher electrical conductivity electrodes. However, obstacles of low power density as well as low cycling life still remain to be addressed. In metal-oxide composites part, carbon nanotube, graphene, carbon fiber fabric and hollow carbon nanofibers combine with MnO 2 respectively, which significantly address drawbacks of all-carbon material electrodes. Additionally, TiO 2 is incorporated into graphene electrode to overcome the low mechanical flexibility of graphene. In organic active compounds part, conducting polymers are employed to combinate with carbon materials to fabricate high specific capacitance, long-term thermal stability and outstanding electroconductivity flexible textile supercapacitors. In each part, innovation, fabrication process and performance of the resulting composites are demonstrated. Finally, future directions that could enhance the performance of supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) graphene/quasi-two-dimensional inorganic materials have been widely explored for construction of energyrelated applications. Catering for rapid development of portable electronic devices, energy storage devices with ultra-thin and high flexibility are urgently needed. Very recently, planar supercapacitor with novel configurations has been rapidly developed as important energy storage devices. In this regard, the assembled thin film of 2D graphene and quasi-2D graphene analogues acted as the vital role for the planar configurations as well as the enhanced performances in the construction of planar energy storage device. This review summarized the construction concept of flexible supercapacitors in all-solid-state based on 2D graphene and quasi-2D graphene analogues. We also surveyed how to select quasi-2D graphene analogues with high electrochemical properties, and even how to use the synergic advantages of hybrid structure for further performance enhancement of planar supercapacitors. Recent progresses and possible future applications on planar supercapacitors were also reviewed and outlooked.

Abstract:Graphene has recently attracted a wide range of research interests due to its rigorous two-dimensional structure and extraordinary electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. As a conductive agent, an activated carbon supercapacitor can obtain better performance. This paper summarizes the latest research progress, mainly from two aspects: (1) the preparation of an activated carbon base for a supercapacitor based on waste sugar solution and the relationship between pore structure and activation parameters, and (2) the application of the two-dimensional materials graphene and its composite materials in electric double-layer capacitors, graphene–polymer composite tantalum capacitors, graphene–transition metal oxide composite tantalum capacitors, and asymmetric super capacitors. The studies found that graphene and its composite materials have obvious advantages in improving the cycle efficiency, conversion rate, and energy density of supercapacitors, the overall energy efficiency of mechanical systems, and the chemical properties of nanoelectronics. Therefore, it is urgent to summarize these works in order to promote the next development. Graphene is expected to be effectively and environmentally quantified in the near future, and its application in supercapacitors will be further expanded and matured.

Abstract:The development of renewable energy conversion and storage devices, aiming at high efficiency, stable operation, environmental friendliness, and low-cost goals, provides a promising approach to resolve the global energy crisis. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have drawn enormous attention due to their unique layered structure and intriguing electrical characteristics, which brings the unprecedented board applications in the fields ranging from electronic, optical, optoelectronic, thermal, magnetic, quantum devices to energy storage and catalysis. Graphene-based 2D layered materials show promising applications in energy storage and conversion owing to their high specific surface area, which have been used for supercapacitor electrode materials based on the electrical double-layer capacitance model. However, graphene has a limited value of theoretical electrical double-layer capacitance when the whole surface area is fully utilized. Among several classes of 2D layered materials beyond graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal carbides, and nitrides may exhibit excellent electrochemical properties due to the distinctive features of these 2D materials, such as large specific surface area, good hydrophilic nature, highly exposed active edge sites, and ease of intercalation and modification. Therefore, careful design and construction of these 2D compounds make them become potential candidates used for electrochemical supercapacitors and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This review emphasizes the recent important advances of the 2D layered materials composed of transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal carbides, and nitrides for supercapacitors and electrocatalysts. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and perspectives in this energy field in terms of the classes of two-dimensional layered materials.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have gained significant attention owing to their exceptional performance in terms of energy density and power density, making them suitable for various applications, such as mobile devices, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage systems. This review focuses on recent advancements in the utilization of 0-dimensional to 3-dimensional carbon network materials as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor devices. This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the potential of carbon-based materials in enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The combination of these materials with other cutting-edge materials, such as Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Black Phosphorus (BP), and perovskite nanoarchitectures, has been extensively studied to achieve a wide operating potential window. The combination of these materials synchronizes their different charge-storage mechanisms to attain practical and realistic applications. The findings of this review indicate that hybrid composite electrodes with 3D structures exhibit the best potential in terms of overall electrochemical performance. However, this field faces several challenges and promising research directions. This study aimed to highlight these challenges and provide insights into the potential of carbon-based materials in supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The hybrid ion capacitor (HIC) is a hybrid electrochemical energy storage device that combines the intercalation mechanism of a lithium-ion battery anode with the double-layer mechanism of the cathode. Thus, an HIC combines the high energy density of batteries and the high power density of supercapacitors, thus bridging the gap between batteries and supercapacitors. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials (graphite, graphene, carbon nanosheets) are promising candidates for hybrid capacitors owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, including their enormous specific surface areas, abundance of active sites (surface and functional groups), and large interlayer spacing. So far, there has been no review focusing on the 2D carbon-based materials for the emerging post-lithium hybrid capacitors. This concept review considers the role of 2D carbon in hybrid capacitors and the recent progress in the application of 2D carbon materials for post-Li (Na+, K+, Zn2+) hybrid capacitors. Moreover, their challenges and trends in their future development are discussed.
