Abstract:Porous nanocomposite materials combine the advantages of a polymer matrix in forming a stable framework and the nanofillers that provide high surface area. Here, we use carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as nanofillers to fabricate chitosan beads with controlled porous structure. We synthesized spherical chitosan–CNT composite beads via freeze casting by dropping a mixed solution into liquid nitrogen, and the resulting highly porous composite beads contain radially oriented channels with hybrid chitosan–CNT channel walls. In particular, we observed localized regions of small CNT agglomerates embedded within the chitosan matrix at a lower CNT loading (40 wt%), and predominately exposed CNTs distributed throughout the channel walls at a higher loading (80 wt%). Owing to the hierarchical open‐porous structure and mesopores provided by exposed CNTs, these composite beads showed much higher adsorption capacity (43.6 mg g−1 within 2 h) to bilirubin than CNT‐free chitosan beads. Our nanocomposite beads with tunable pore wall structure have potential applications in environmental and biomedical areas such as efficient adsorption materials.
Highly Porous Core–Shell Structured Graphene-Chitosan Beads

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) sheets have been assembled into various three-dimensional porous structures and composites, with potential applications in energy and environmental areas. Here, we show the combination of GO and chitosan (CTS) into inorganic–organic heterocomposites as ∼3 mm diameter core–shell beads with controlled microstructure. The spherical GO-CTS beads, made by a two-step freeze-casting method, consist of a GO core wrapped by a CTS shell with abrupt interface; both parts have high porosities (94–96%) and mesopores volume (0.246 cm3/g) yet with different pore morphologies. Incorporation of a GO core into the CTS beads significantly improved the methyl orange adsorption capacity (353 mg/g at 318 K) compared with pure CTS beads. Key factors such as the pH value, adsorbent dosage, concentration, time, and temperature have been studied in detail, whereas adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies reveal a Langmuir model following the pseudo-second order.
Effect of Beading Parameters on Cross-Linked Chitosan Adsorptive Properties

Abstract:Among countless applications, chitosan has the potential to be an effective and cheap adsorbent for pollutant removal in (waste) water. In form of beads, it also exhibits good mechanical and fluid dynamic properties that are suitable for utilization in large-scale adsorption processes (e.g. as column packing). The present study investigates the beading process to prepare chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads by phase inversion method. Beading parameters (i.e. chitosan amount, acid concentration, non-solvent agent concentration, and temperature) are optimized to obtain an appropriate adsorbent structure to uptake large organic molecules (reactive red 2, a dye, is utilized as model pollutant). Chitosan beads present remarkably enhanced adsorption capacity, mainly thanks to increased specific surface area and porosity. The addition of a cross-linker (diepoxyoctane) further improves pollutant removal. The adsorption process is well-fitted by the Freundlich model, suggesting a multilayer adsorption. The kinetic study also substantiates the complexity of the adsorption mechanism on bead surface, which, however, is satisfactorily predicted by a simple fractal kinetic model. Finally, it is proved that chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads can be recycled (by washing with NaOH solution) at least 5 times before sensible performance loss.
Tailoring the Adsorption and Antibacterial Bifunctions of Newly Constructed Porous Alginate–Chitosan–Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Gel Beads

Abstract:Organic dye molecules and pathogenic microorganisms exist widely in printing and dyeing wastewater, causing persisting concerns about water environment safety. Herein, newly developed alginate–chitosan–graphene oxide nanosheets gel beads with both exceptional adsorption and antibacterial functions are reported. NaHCO 3 is selected as porogen and Ag + is used as antibacterial enhancer. The adsorption properties of the beads fit well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo‐second‐order model, suggesting a monolayer behavior of the adsorption and their reaction rate is controlled by chemisorption. The theoretical liminal value of the adsorption of methylene blue by the beads reaches 847.46 mg g −1 . After five adsorption–desorption cycles, the beads retain almost intact adsorption activity, and the sterilization rates of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus remain at 99.99%. The results give insight into developing new processing routes for constructing gel beads for versatile applications.
Engineering Porosity-Tuned Chitosan Beads: Balancing Porosity, Kinetics, and Mechanical Integrity

Abstract:Chitosan, a cationic natural polysaccharide derived from the deacetylation of chitin, is known for its solubility in diluted acidic solutions, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. This study introduces three innovative methods to prepare porous chitosan microsphere particles, which are crucial for enhancing their efficiency in water remediation and medical applications. The methods, solvent extraction, surfactant extraction, and substance decomposition, involve the integration and subsequent extraction or decomposition of materials during the synthesis process, eliminating the need for additional steps. We used state-of-the-art characterization techniques to analyze and evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the particles, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and especially three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scanning. The CT scans were used to visualize and measure the porosity of different particle types, ranging from 68.4% to 39.3%. This detailed study extended to evaluate the mechanical properties of the particles under compressive forces in wet and dry conditions, highlighting the influence of porosity on their mechanical integrity and compression pressure behavior. In addition, we explored the adsorptive properties of these chitosan particles, using methylene blue as a model pollutant because of its toxicity, underscoring the significance of porosity in enhancing their pollutant removal efficiency. This study opens the window for developing environmentally sustainable polymer particles and highlights the pivotal role of porosity in optimizing the material’s efficacy for a wide range of applications.

Preparation of ultra-light, highly compressible, and biodegradable chitosan porous materials for heavy metal adsorption, dye adsorption and oil-water separation

Abstract:Chitosan materials are much important in adsorption, separation and water treatment due to their hydrophilicity, biodegradability and easy functionalization. However, they were difficult to form structural materials, which limited its application in engineering. In this paper, a new type of chitosan porous materials was prepared with two-step strategy involving the freezing crosslinking of chitosan with glutaraldehyde to form cryogels, and their subsequent reduction with NaBH4 to transform CN bonds into CN bonds, resulting in remarkable improvement of mechanical property. That is, the strength remained almost unchanged after 80 % deformation. The abundant -NH2 and -OH on the surface of materials, as well as the unique pore structure from cryogels, gave relatively high adsorption capacity for metals and dyes (88.73 ± 4.25 mg·g-1 for Cu(II) and 3261.05 ± 36.10 mg·g-1 for Congo red). The surface hydrophilicity of materials made it possible for selective water permeation with over 95 % separation efficiency for oil-water mixtures. In addition, simple hydrophobic modification using bromotetradecane achieved selective oil permeation with over 96 % separation efficiency for oil-water mixtures. This study not only provides a new strategy to endow chitosan materials with excellent mechanical property, large adsorption capacity and good oil-water separation performance, but also offers environmentally friendly materials for sewage treatment applications.
Chitosan/Silica Nanocomposite Preparation from Shrimp Shell and Its Adsorption Performance for Methylene Blue

Abstract:In this study, novel chitosan/silica composites with different mass ratios were prepared by in-situ hydrolysis using chitosan (from shrimp shell) as a carrier, triblock copolymer (P123) as the structure-directing agent, and ethyl orthosilicate as a silicon source. These nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques, including the FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM and N2 adsorption–desorption. The results indicated that the morphology and properties of composites changed with the introduction of silica. When the CS/TEOS mass ratio was 0.0775, the CS−2/SiO2 composite displayed a coral-like three-dimensional porous structure with specific surface area of 640.37 m2/g and average pore size of 1.869 nm. The adsorption properties for methylene blue (MB) were investigated as well and the CS−2/SiO2 showed better adsorption performance. The removal rate for MB reached 94.01% with absorbents dosage of 6 g/L, initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH value of 7, temperature of 35 °C, and adsorption time of 40 min. The adsorption process well fitted the Langmuir isothermal model and quasi-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB was 13.966 mg/g based on Langmuir fitting. The surface functional groups of the composites can play an important role in the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of CS−2/SiO2 on MB involved electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and functional group complexation. In addition, the prepared chitosan/silica composites showed good reusability at six cycles, making them a promising material in the application of removing dyeing wastewater.
Preparation and Adsorption Ability of Polysulfone Microcapsules Containing Modified Chitosan Gel

Abstract:Chemically modified chitosan beads containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) were prepared to improve the metal ion adsorption capacity of the chitosan beads and their mechanical stability and to limit their biodegradability. The modified beads were encapsulated with the polymer material polysulfone by a novel surface coating method named the emulsion phase inversion method. The adsorption properties of the modified beads and the microstructures of the polysulfone coating layer were then analyzed. The experimental results showed that the PEI was successfully linked onto the chitosan beads. The density of the —NH2 groups in the modified beads was significantly increased, while the water content was reduced. The coating layer thickness was about 200 μm. The modified chitosan gel beads had excellent Cu(II) adsorption capacity, with a maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity 1.34 times higher than that of the unmodified beads. The results show that even with the polysulfone coating the adsorption kinetics of the modified beads is still better than those of the unmodified beads. The modifications improve the mass transfer performance of the chitosan beads as well as the bead stability.

Abstract:Porous chitosan/saccharomycetes adsorption microspheres were successfully prepared by using silica gel as porogen. The morphology of porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, the interaction between molecules was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the crystallization property of the microspheres was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the adsorption sites of amino and hydroxyl groups had been provided by the porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres for the removal of preservatives, pigments, and other additives in food. The surface roughness of microspheres could be improved by increasing the mass ratio of saccharomycetes. The increase in silica gels could make the microsphere structure more compact. The porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres could be used as adsorbents to adsorb doxycycline in wastewater.

Preparation and Optimization of a Novel Magnetic Chitosan/Sodium Alginate Composite Gel Bead

Abstract:Using sodium alginate hydrogel as skeleton, in combination with chitosan and magnetic Fe3O4, a new type of magnetic chitosan/sodium alginate gel bead was prepared. On this basis, through the orthogonal experiment and single-factor experiment, the authors optimized the preparation conditions for composite gel bead, and determined the optimum one. The influences of many preparation impact factors on adsorption performance were examined. Results show that the optimal preparation conditions for the composite gel bead is as follows. Concentration of calcium chloride is 2.5 g/L, concentration of sodium alginate is 24 g/L, the amount of chitosan addition is 5 g/L, and the amount of magnetic liquid addition is 4.64 g/L. The optimal gel bead is a smooth, uniform, black ball with about 2 mm in diameter. By Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), synchronous thermal analysis (TGA) and other means of characterization, the adsorption mechanism is analyzed. Thermo-gravimetric analysis results show that the gel bead has good thermal stability. FTIR results prove that many active functional groups (amino group, hydroxyl group and carboxyl group) exist on the surface of gel bead. The adsorption performance test shows that adsorption ratio of 20mg MCSB on 40mL 25mg/L Cu2+ solution is 78.13%. The magnetic chitosan/sodium alginate gel bead is a novel simple-prepared and effective composite adsorbent. © 2018 Peking University.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Oil adsorption is significant for water purification and environmental protection. However, the conventional bulk sorbents face the predicament of uncontrollable motion as well as hydrophobic nature the whole body, which largely restricts their uptake capacity underwater. Hence, novel adsorbent material for high-efficient oil uptake both at the surface and under the water is urgently required. Experiments: We presented a phase-transition lysozyme coating approach to fabricate porous carbon nanotube microspheres with tailorable surface wettability areas for versatile oil adsorption. Because of the existence of magnetic nanoparticle in one hemisphere, the multi-sites coating was easily achieved by constantly changing orientations of the magnetic field. Owing to the integration of various hydrophilic functional groups in lysozyme as well as remarkable adhesion to virtually arbitrary materials, the intrinsically hydrophobic surface of the microspheres was partially modified hydrophilic on multiple sites. Findings: It was demonstrated that the unique surface wettability feature and the porous structure enabled the microspheres to adsorb multiple contaminants both floating on the water and underwater. Besides, the magnetic-responsive ability allowed for controllable collection of oil contaminants. These features, along with the reusability, make the porous carbon nanotube microspheres excellent adsorbents for water purification. CO 2021 Published by Elsevier Inc.
Copper adsorption on chitosan–cellulose hydrogel beads: behaviors and mechanisms

Abstract:The application of chitosan–cellulose hydrogel beads as an adsorbent for Cu adsorption from aqueous solutions was examined. Chitosan was blended with cellulose to make chitosan–cellulose hydrogel beads and the hydrogel beads were crosslinked with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE). It was found that the addition of cellulose to chitosan made the hydrogel beads materially denser and the crosslinking reaction improved the chemical stability of the chitosan–cellulose beads in solutions with pH values down to 1. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that both the chitosan–cellulose and the crosslinked chitosan–cellulose hydrogel beads had high adsorption capacities for Cu removal, with the optimum pH in the range around neutral, although the crosslinked chitosan–cellulose beads always exhibited slightly lower adsorption capacities than the non-crosslinked beads. The adsorption isotherm of the chitosan–cellulose beads can be well-fitted to the Langmuir model, but that of the crosslinked chitosan–cellulose can only be well described by the Freundlich model. Copper adsorption kinetics on both types of the beads clearly followed an initial transport-controlled adsorption phenomenon. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that Cu adsorption on the beads mainly involved the nitrogen atoms in chitosan to form surface complexes.

Abstract:The adsorption of chitosan onto highly ordered pyrolytic graphite(HOPG) surfaces and its applications have been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that chitosan topography formed on the HOPG surface significantly depends on the pH conditions and its concentration for the incubation. Under strongly acidic conditions (pH < 3.5) and at a concentration of 1 mg ml(-1), chitosan formed into uniform network structures composed of fine chains. When the solution pH was changed from 3.5 to 6.5, chitosan tends to form a thicker film. Under neutral and basic conditions, chitosan changed into spherical nanoparticles, and their sizes were increased with increasing pH. Dendritic structures have been observed when the chitosan concentration was increased up to 5 mg ml(-1). In addition, the chitosan topography can also be influenced by ionic strength and the addition of different metal ions. When 0.1 M metal ions Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Cu2+ were added into the chitosan solution at pH 3.0 for the incubation, network structures, branched chains, block structures and dense networks attached with many small particles were observed, respectively. The potential applications of these chitosan structures on HOPG have been explored. Preliminary results characterized by AFM and XPS indicated that the chitosan network formed on the HOPG surface can be used for AFM lithography, selective adsorption of gold nanoparticles and DNA molecules.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction between chitosan and surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is fundamental to prepare nanoparticles for drug delivery but also to synthesize porous functionalized materials. In this work, we first studied the self-aggregation property of chitosan and found that the microporous structure of chitosan-templated silica was dependent on the chitosan concentration and the deacetylation degree of chitosan. The interactions between chitosan and CTAB were studied by reflection–absorption infrared spectra, which illustrate that the molecular orientations of chitosan are greatly affected by adding CTAB especially at lower pH. Through measurements of the critical micelle concentration values of CTAB and characterizations of porous structures, it is indicated that micro–meso silica can be synthesized with the chitosan–CTAB hybrid, and both surface area and pore volume as well as the meso-periodity of silica can be modulated by adding CTAB in the sol–gel synthesis process at proper pH value.
Microfluidic Preparation of Chitosan Microspheres with Enhanced Adsorption Performance of Copper(Ii)

Abstract:This article presents facile microfluidic methods to prepare different chitosan microspheres by combining chemical crosslinking and solvent extraction. And the enhancement of Cu(II) adsorption kinetics and capacity was realized. The effects of solidifying time, initial concentration of Cu(II) and initial pH on adsorption performance were systematically studied. The adsorption isotherms can be fitted with Langmuir equation. The adsorption capacity was about 50mg/g, which is similar to that in references. To enhance the adsorption kinetics, porous chitosan microspheres were prepared by using poly(ethylene glycol) to form the pores. Many tiny pores were closely arranged on the surface, which resulted in accelerating the adsorption of Cu(II). And the adsorption time to reach equilibrium was reduced from 100h to 20h. To enhance the adsorption capacity, chitosan was crosslinked with another biocompatible polymer, poly(acrylic acid), and the blending microspheres were prepared with a two-step solidifying method. By adjusting the content of acrylic acid, the adsorption capacity could be increased to 66.3mg/g. Finally, porous chitosan-poly(acrylic acid) composite microspheres were prepared by combining the above methods. Adsorption reached equilibrium after about 25h and the adsorption capacity is about 72mg/g. Both the adsorption kinetics and capacity of the composite microspheres were enhanced.
Enhanced, Rapid, and Selective Adsorption Behaviors of a Porous Chitosan-Based Adsorbent

Abstract:Adsorption is a popular water treatment technique that encounters several challenges in practical applications, such as rapidly achieved adsorption equilibrium and selective recovery. In this work, a quaternary-ammonium-salt modified chitosan adsorbent with porous structure (porous CS-CTA) was obtained conveniently by removing embedded inorganic nanoparticles from a previously well-prepared chitosan-based magnetic composite adsorbent (CS-CTA-MCM). Compared with CS-CTA-MCM and CS-CTA without porous structures, porous CS-CTA shows clearly improved and rapid adsorption of both methyl orange and chromium [Cr(VI)] from water because of its larger specific surface area. It also presents significantly enhanced selective adsorption of methyl orange over Cr(VI) in their aqueous mixture at neutral and alkaline conditions, an outcome that is ascribed to the stronger affinity of methyl orange to porous CS-CTA compared with that of Cr(VI). The porous microstructure of CS-CTA results in its higher adsorption efficiency in the removal of those two pollutants in comparison with the other adsorbents.
In-situ synthesis of MIL-100(Fe)@chitosan composite beads with hierarchical porous structure for efficient adsorption of chlortetracycline hydrochloride: Synthesis, performance and mechanisms

Abstract:The widespread use of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) inevitably poses a potential threat to human health and the biological system, and its environmental pollution and ecotoxicological effects cannot be ignored. Herein, we adopted an in-situ growth method to immobilize the powder form of MIL-100(Fe) adsorbent into low-cost chitosan (CS) matrix for the CTC removal. Metal hydroxide (or metal oxide)/CS beads from the acid-dissolved/alkali-solidified self-sphering shaping method were employed as the substrates for MIL-100(Fe) immobilization, allowing it grow uniformly and stably. Notably, this strategy not only reduced the loss in the separation and regeneration process of powdery MIL-100(Fe), but also improved the adsorption capacity of the CS. Isotherm and kinetic studies showed that the Freundlich and PSO models can describe the experimental data better, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Langmuir can reach 578.03 mg g −1 . Further, the performance of MIL-100@CS-2 composite beads was thoroughly explored by batch experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain the optimized operating conditions with the highest CTC removal rate. By combining the density functional theory (DFT) calculation with experimental analysis, the adsorption mechanisms of pore filling, hydrogen bonding , electrostatic interaction, π-π EDA interaction, and hydrophilic interaction were proposed. Abstract:Highly tailorable adsorbents are the key to addressing specialized pollution problems, such as the release of pharmaceuticals into our wastewaters. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) pose a platform with modifiable functionality and pore system, allowing pollutant-customized adsorption. Herein novel phenanthren-dione based monomers are coupled to triethynylbenzene (TEB) forming new CMPs. These are compared with two literature-known, also TEB based CMPs regarding their adsorption properties towards the model drug diclofenac. To improve the handleability and enhance the adsorption the CMPs are integrated into chitosan gel beads, enabling simple removal using a sieve. The drying process of the beads turned out to significantly influence the swelling. Vacuum-dried beads exhibited 4–8 times higher water uptake than air-dried beads. Further, it proved beneficial to use hexanoyl modified chitosan as hybrid matrix, since it shows even further improved swelling capabilities, leading to a facilitated diffusion of the diclofenac through the chitosan matrix. This resulted in a notable enhancement of the adsorption efficiency of the CMPs, while concurrently exerting control over the adsorption process through the customization of swelling properties.

Abstract:An easy and practical method is adopted to assemble mesoporous carbon particles into a macroporous chitosan membrane to form hierarchical adsorption membranes for water treatment. The membrane showed both good static and dynamic adsorption properties on model dye fuchsin, which implies its great potential for decontamination in flowing systems.

Abstract:In this paper, magnetic chitosan microspheres were prepared by the emulsification cross-linking technique, with glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent, liquid paraffin as the dispersant, and the Span-80 as emulsifier. The time of cross-linking and the ratio of Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4/chitosan were investigated. The morphology was studied by different instruments. The adsorption performance was investigated and the effects of initial concentration of methyl orange, the time of cross-linking, and the amount of adsorbent were discussed. It is found that the product has uniform morphology when the ratio of magnetic Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4/chitosan is 1 : 2 and the time of cross-linking is 5 h; At room temperature, magnetic Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4–chitosan has a good adsorption toward methyl orange when the magnetic Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4/chitosan dosage is 20 mg.
