Abstract:Environmentally friendly separation materials are essential for separating emulsified oil-water mixtures. The nylon membrane has been facilely converted into highly hydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic via a simple one-step co-deposition of polydopamine and chitosan-tripolyphosphate (CS-TPP) nanoparticles, wherein the CS-TPP particles were prepared by the ion gel method. The modified membrane exhibited excellent antifouling performance with the underwater oil contact Angle (UOCA) at 179.6 degrees. The prepared environmental CS-TPP@PDA@nylon membrane was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XPS. The membrane could separate various oil-in-water emulsions in a wide range of average particle sizes (50.9-1832.0 nm). In addition, the CS-TPP@PDA@nylon membrane demonstrated high permeation flux (221.0-1770.5 L m(-2) h(-1)) and good regeneration ability. The flux could still maintain more than 89% even after fifteen cycles. The degradable modification materials and simple preparation process would highlight the potential of modified membranes in large-scale production and green oily wastewater treatment.
Microfluidic Preparation of Chitosan Microspheres with Enhanced Adsorption Performance of Copper(Ii)

Abstract:This article presents facile microfluidic methods to prepare different chitosan microspheres by combining chemical crosslinking and solvent extraction. And the enhancement of Cu(II) adsorption kinetics and capacity was realized. The effects of solidifying time, initial concentration of Cu(II) and initial pH on adsorption performance were systematically studied. The adsorption isotherms can be fitted with Langmuir equation. The adsorption capacity was about 50mg/g, which is similar to that in references. To enhance the adsorption kinetics, porous chitosan microspheres were prepared by using poly(ethylene glycol) to form the pores. Many tiny pores were closely arranged on the surface, which resulted in accelerating the adsorption of Cu(II). And the adsorption time to reach equilibrium was reduced from 100h to 20h. To enhance the adsorption capacity, chitosan was crosslinked with another biocompatible polymer, poly(acrylic acid), and the blending microspheres were prepared with a two-step solidifying method. By adjusting the content of acrylic acid, the adsorption capacity could be increased to 66.3mg/g. Finally, porous chitosan-poly(acrylic acid) composite microspheres were prepared by combining the above methods. Adsorption reached equilibrium after about 25h and the adsorption capacity is about 72mg/g. Both the adsorption kinetics and capacity of the composite microspheres were enhanced.
Chitosan/Silica Nanocomposite Preparation from Shrimp Shell and Its Adsorption Performance for Methylene Blue

Abstract:In this study, novel chitosan/silica composites with different mass ratios were prepared by in-situ hydrolysis using chitosan (from shrimp shell) as a carrier, triblock copolymer (P123) as the structure-directing agent, and ethyl orthosilicate as a silicon source. These nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques, including the FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM and N2 adsorption–desorption. The results indicated that the morphology and properties of composites changed with the introduction of silica. When the CS/TEOS mass ratio was 0.0775, the CS−2/SiO2 composite displayed a coral-like three-dimensional porous structure with specific surface area of 640.37 m2/g and average pore size of 1.869 nm. The adsorption properties for methylene blue (MB) were investigated as well and the CS−2/SiO2 showed better adsorption performance. The removal rate for MB reached 94.01% with absorbents dosage of 6 g/L, initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH value of 7, temperature of 35 °C, and adsorption time of 40 min. The adsorption process well fitted the Langmuir isothermal model and quasi-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB was 13.966 mg/g based on Langmuir fitting. The surface functional groups of the composites can play an important role in the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of CS−2/SiO2 on MB involved electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and functional group complexation. In addition, the prepared chitosan/silica composites showed good reusability at six cycles, making them a promising material in the application of removing dyeing wastewater.
Co-adsorption and selective-adsorption of heavy metals and dyes from aqueous solution by bio-based humus/chitosan hydrogels

Abstract:An eco-friendly adsorbent was prepared by reverse suspension crosslinking method to remove multiple pollutants from aqueous solution. Both raw materials, derived from humus (HS) and chitosan (CS), are biodegradable and low-cost natural biopolymers. After combining HS with CS, the adsorption capacity was significantly improved due to compensation effects between the two components. HS/CS exhibited the features of amphoteric adsorption through pH adjustment, enabling it to adsorb not only anionic pollutants (Methyl Orange (MO) and Cr(VI)), but also cationic ones (Methylene Blue (MB) and Pb(II)). The adsorption capacities were approximately 242 mg/g, 69 mg/g, 188 mg/g and 57 mg/g for MO, Cr(VI), MB and Pb(II), respectively. HS/CS showed a slight preference for MO in MO/Cr(VI) co-adsorption system, whereas strong selectivity for MB over Pb(II) in MB/Pb(II) system under acidic condition (pH<3.0). This selective behavior would allow for potential applications in separating MB/Pb(II) effluents and selectively recycling Pb(II) in acidic environment. The isothermal and kinetic adsorption behaviors followed Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the interaction between metal ions and adsorbents was primarily attributed to chelation and electrostatic adsorption, owing to nitric and oxygenic functional groups. Whereas, the adsorption mechanisms for dyes were involved in electrostatic attraction, H-bond and π-π bond, due to available hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen atoms and aromatic groups on the surface of adsorbent and adsorbates. The adsorbent could be efficiently regenerated and retained over 90% of its adsorption capacity after five cycles, which has a potential for practical applications in water treatment.
Enhancing Wastewater Depollution: Sustainable Biosorption Using Chemically Modified Chitosan Derivatives for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals and Dyes

Abstract:Driven by concerns over polluted industrial wastewater, particularly heavy metals and dyes, this study explores biosorption using chemically cross-link chitosan derivatives as a sustainable and cost-effective depollution method. Chitosan cross-linking employs either water-soluble polymers and agents like glutaraldehyde or copolymerization of hydrophilic monomers with a cross-linker. Chemical cross-linking of polymers has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the wet-strength properties of materials. The chitosan thus extracted, as powder or gel, was used to adsorb heavy metals (lead (Pb2+) and copper (Cu2+)) and dyes (methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV)). Extensive analysis of the physicochemical properties of both the powder and hydrogel adsorbents was conducted using a range of analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). To gain a comprehensive understanding of the sorption process, the effect of contact time, pH, concentration, and temperature was investigated. The adsorption capacity of chitosan powder for Cu(II), Pb(II), methylene blue (MB), and crystal violet (CV) was subsequently determined as follows: 99, 75, 98, and 80%, respectively. In addition, the adsorption capacity of chitosan hydrogel for Cu(II), Pb(II), MB, and CV was as follows: 85, 95, 85, and 98%, respectively. The experimental data obtained were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The isotherm study revealed that the adsorption equilibrium is well fitted to the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.998), and the sorption capacity of both chitosan powder and hydrogel was found to be exceptionally high (approximately 98%) with the adsorbent favoring multilayer adsorption. Besides, Dubinin has given an indication that the sorption process was dominated by Van der Waals physical forces at all studied temperatures.

Acid-resistant chitosan/graphene oxide adsorbent for Cu2+ removal: The role of mixed cross-linking and amino-functionalized

Abstract:Copper ions in wastewater pose a significant threat to human and ecological safety. Therefore, preparing macroscopic adsorbents with reusable and high adsorption performance is paramount. This paper used graphene oxide as the adsorbent and chitosan as the thickener. Additionally, a silane coupling agent was employed to enhance the acid resistance of chitosan, and amino-modification of graphene oxide was performed. Macroscopic adsorbents with high adsorption capacity were fabricated using 3D printing technology. The results show that all five proportions of inks exhibit good printability. Dissolution experiments revealed that all materials maintained structural integrity after 180 days across pH values. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation of the materials. Adsorption experiments showed that the best performing material ratio was 8 wt% graphene oxide and 7 wt% chitosan. Adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred via monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process was attributed to strong electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, and nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional group coordination. Cycling experiments showed that the material retained good adsorption performance after 6 cycles, suggesting its potential for practical heavy metal treatment applications.
Ring-like structured chitosan-metal hydrogel: Mass production, formation mechanism and applications.

Abstract:To improve the solid/liquid separation of chitosan adsorbents as well as the adsorption ability, chitosan was molded in several shapes. However, the ring-like structures of chitosan which have relatively larger surface area and higher chemical accessibility, but low-pressure drops than their plate-like counterparts has not been reported. In this study, we put forward a novel concept to fabricate a kind of highly efficient ring-like structured chitosan hydrogel through a sulfate ionic crosslinking method, its mass production and formation mechanism has been fully proposed. The ring-like chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel exhibits the outstanding performance with AR73 removal rate of 98.53% and Cr(VI) removal rate of 90.53%, respectively. The adsorption of AR73 is well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, which indicates chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel ring possesses a considerable adsorption capacity of 205.2mg/g. In addition, chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel ring could efficiently adsorb both AR73 and Cr(VI) simultaneously (96.9% and 85.9%, respectively). Overall, this work provides a facile method to prepare ring-like structured chitosan-metal hydrogel, which can be mass-produced as multifunctional materials for practical application.

Abstract:Chitosan has received widespread attention as an adsorbent for pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potentials. Chitosan has abundant hydroxyl and amino groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, it has defects such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability, and low mechanical strength, which limit the application of chitosan in wastewater treatment. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to improve its performance via crosslinking and graft modification. The porosity and specific surface area of chitosan in powder form are not ideal, therefore, physical modification has been attempted to generate chitosan nanoparticles and hydrogel. Chitosan has also been integrated with other materials (e.g. graphene, zeolite) resulting in composite materials with improved adsorption performance. This review mainly focuses on reports about the application of chitosan and its derivatives to remove different heavy metals. The preparation strategy, adsorption mechanism, and factors affecting the adsorption performance of adsorbents for each type of heavy metal are discussed in detail. Recent reports on important organic pollutants (dyes and phenol) removal by chitosan and its derivatives are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Chitosan is a promising adsorbent for removing a wide range of pollutants from wastewater. However, its practical application is hindered by instability in acidic environments, which significantly impairs its adsorption capacity and limits its utilization in water purification. While cross-linking can enhance the acid stability of chitosan, current solvent-based methods are often costly and environmentally unfriendly. In this study, a solvent-free mechanochemical process was developed using high-energy ball milling to cross-link chitosan with various polyanionic linkers, including dextran sulfate (DS), poly[4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid] (PSSM), and tripolyphosphate (TPP). The mechanochemically cross-linked (MCCL) chitosan products exhibited superior adsorption capacity and stability in acidic solutions compared to pristine chitosan. Chitosan cross-linked with DS (Cht-DS) showed the highest Reactive Red 2 (RR2) adsorption capacity, reaching 1559 mg·g−1 at pH 3, followed by Cht-PSSM (1352 mg·g−1) and Cht-TPP (1074 mg·g−1). The stability of MCCL chitosan was visually confirmed by the negligible mass loss of Cht-DS and Cht-PSSM tablets in pH 3 solution, unlike the complete dissolution of the pristine chitosan tablet. The MCCL significantly increased the microhardness of chitosan, with the order Cht-DS > Cht-PSSM > Cht-TPP, consistent with the RR2 adsorption capacity. When tested on simulated rinsing wastewater from chromium electroplating, Cht-DS effectively removed Cr(VI) (98.75% removal) and three per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (87.40–95.87% removal), following pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This study demonstrates the potential of the cost-effective and scalable MCCL approach to produce chitosan-based adsorbents with enhanced stability, mechanical strength, and adsorption performance for treating highly acidic industrial wastewater containing a mixture of toxic pollutants.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid global industrialization worsens the contamination of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems on the earth. In this study, the green, ultrafine cellulose-based porous nanofibrous membranes for efficient heavy metal removal through incorporation of chitosan by the conventional and core-shell electrospinning ways were firstly obtained. The relations among parameters of electrospun solution, micro-morphology and porosity for nanofibers, the variation of chemical active sites and adsorption performance of biocomposite nanofibrous membranes for conventional and core-shell electrospinning as well as the adsorption effect factors of copper ions including initial concentration, pH of solution and interaction time were comprehensively investigated. The results show that the average diameter for conventional and core-shell ultrafine nanofibers at 50% chitosan and 30% chitosan loading can achieve 56.22 nm and 37.28 nm, respectively. The core-shell cellulose acetate/chitosan (CA/CS) biocomposite nanofibrous membranes induced the surface aggregation of copper ions to impede the further adsorption. The more uniform distribution for chemical adsorption sites can be obtained by the conventional single-nozzle electrospinning than by the core-shell one, which promotes the adsorption performance of copper ions and decreases the surface shrinkage of nanofibrous membranes during adsorption. The 30% CS conventional nanofibrous membranes at the pH=5 aqueous solution showed the optimum adsorption capacity of copper ions (86.4 mg/g). The smart combination of renewable biomass with effective chemical adsorptive sites, the electrospinning technology with interwoven porous structure and the adsorption method with low cost and facile operation shows a promising prospect for water treatment.
Effect of Crosslinking on the Properties of Membrane Formulated from Quaternized Chitosan

Abstract:Heavy metals are easily absorbed by living things because of their high-water solubility. Adsorption is a popular separation technique that is used to remove heavy metals from water since it is inexpensive, widely available, and ecologically benign. Chitosan's structure includes hydroxyl and amino groups, which make it a popular adsorbent for heavy metals. In this study, quaternization was used to change chitosan and improve its adsorption capacity. As the quaternizing agent, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TMAB) was employed. After blending the quaternized chitosan with polyvinyl alcohol and polysulfone, a membrane was created, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used to crosslink it. Tetraethyl orthosilicate loadings of 1, 2, and 4 weight percent were added to the membrane formulation as a crosslinker. The surface morphology and surface charge of the prepared membranes were then described. Antifouling analysis and water permeation were used to test the performances. According to the results, membrane M4 with 4 weight percent TEOS exhibited the best characteristics, especially in terms of surface charge and surface morphology with strong antifouling capabilities. Furthermore, it has the highest water flux attributed to good surface hydrophilicity. The developed membranes may find application in the heavy metal removal phase of water treatment.
Engineering Porosity-Tuned Chitosan Beads: Balancing Porosity, Kinetics, and Mechanical Integrity

Abstract:Chitosan, a cationic natural polysaccharide derived from the deacetylation of chitin, is known for its solubility in diluted acidic solutions, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. This study introduces three innovative methods to prepare porous chitosan microsphere particles, which are crucial for enhancing their efficiency in water remediation and medical applications. The methods, solvent extraction, surfactant extraction, and substance decomposition, involve the integration and subsequent extraction or decomposition of materials during the synthesis process, eliminating the need for additional steps. We used state-of-the-art characterization techniques to analyze and evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the particles, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and especially three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scanning. The CT scans were used to visualize and measure the porosity of different particle types, ranging from 68.4% to 39.3%. This detailed study extended to evaluate the mechanical properties of the particles under compressive forces in wet and dry conditions, highlighting the influence of porosity on their mechanical integrity and compression pressure behavior. In addition, we explored the adsorptive properties of these chitosan particles, using methylene blue as a model pollutant because of its toxicity, underscoring the significance of porosity in enhancing their pollutant removal efficiency. This study opens the window for developing environmentally sustainable polymer particles and highlights the pivotal role of porosity in optimizing the material’s efficacy for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) aerogels were prepared through sol-gel combining with freeze drying technology. The effects of CMCS concentration on the gelation time, volume shrinkage, density, porosity, compressive strength and hygroscopicity were investigated. Meanwhile, the CMCS aerogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then the CMCS aerogel was hydrophobic, modified through cold plasma modification technology, and oil absorbency of hydrophobic modified CMCS (HMCMCS) aerogel was researched. The results showed that the CMCS aerogel had the lowest density of 0.022 g/cm3, the maximum porosity of 95.34%, the highest compressive strength reached 1.74 MPa and a three-dimensional (3D) network heterogeneous porous structures in the inner areas. After hydrophobic modification, the water contact angle of 2% for HMCMCS aerogel with 20 min under 60 W reached 117 °. Besides, the HMCMCS aerogel represented excellent oil adsorbing property and outstanding recyclability, for the oil adsorption rate was up to 31.6 g/g and stable in multiple cycles.

Abstract:Chitosan,in particular with a format of microspheres,has been extensively employed in many applications,that is,treatment of wastewater,chromatographic support,enzyme immobilization,drug delivery,dental application,and hemostasis.In this paper,porous chitosan microspheres were prepared by oil-in-water-in-oil(O/W/O) multiple emulsion crosslinking method.The low toxic and nontoxic solvents,ethyl acetate and castor oil,were applied as a cavity generating agent and a water-insoluble dispersion medium,respectively,to replace the commonly used toxic oil phase such as petroleum ether,toluene and paraffin.The low molecular weight chitosan was obtained by the depolymerization of raw chitosan with hydroperoxide.The viscosity molecular weight(Mw) of the chitosan was investigated by using an Ubbelohde viscosimeter and calculated based on Mark Houwink equation.For preparation of the porous chitosan microspheres,ethyl acetate was first emulsified in chitosan acetic acid solution,and subsequently the emulsion was inversely dispersed in castor oil.The chitosan micro-droplets were solidified and hardened by glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent.All the preparation process was carried out at room temperature.The stirring rate of the emulsion,chitosan concentration,ethyl acetate/chitosan solution ratio,chitosan solution/castor oil ratio,and glutaraldehyde concentration were studied as effective preparation parameters on the size,size distribution and porosity of the chitosan microspheres.The chitosan microspheres were filtrated and rinsed with ethanol and water to remove the organic solvent and the surfactants.Finally,the porous chitosan microspheres were obtained by freeze-drying.The number average diameter of the optimized example of chitosan microspheres was 51.2 μm.The porous structures distributed in the chitosan microspheres were clearly observed by the SEM.

In this study, green, ultrafine cellulose-based porous nanofibrous membranes for efficient heavy metal removal were obtained by incorporating chitosan (CS) and using conventional and core–shell electrospinning ways. The relationship between the parameters of the electrospinning solution, the micro-morphology and porosity, the chemically active sites, the thermal stability, and the adsorption performance of the biocomposite nanofibrous membranes were analyzed. The adsorption effects of the copper ions, including the initial concentration, solution pH, and interaction time, were investigated. The results show that the average diameters of the conventional and core–shell ultrafine nanofibers with 50% and 30% CS loading are 56.22 nm and 37.28 nm, respectively. The core–shell cellulose acetate (CA)/CS biocomposite nanofibrous membranes showed the weaker thermal stability with a 48.2 °C lower maximum thermal decomposition temperature and induced the surface aggregation of more copper ions compared to the conventional one. A more uniform distribution of the chemical adsorption sites is obtained by conventional single-nozzle electrospinning than by core–shell electrospinning, which effectively promotes the adsorption performance of copper ions and decreases the surface shrinkage of the nanofibrous membranes during adsorption. The 30% CS conventional nanofibrous membranes at an aqueous solution pH of 5 showed the optimum adsorption capacity of copper ions (86.4 mg/g). The smart combination of renewable biomass with effective chemical adsorption sites, electrospinning technology that produces an interwoven porous structure, and an adsorption method with low cost and facile operation shows a promising prospect for water treatment.

Abstract:Waste water with heavy metal ions has been of great concern because of its increased discharge, toxic and some other bad effects on human beings or the environment. In this article, monodispersed chitosan/silica hybrid microspheres with porous structure and large specific surface area were successfully prepared by using microfluidic technology and they have advantages in mechanical property and adsorption of heavy metal ions such as Cu(II). In the optimum condition, porous chitosan/silica hybrid microspheres with 1.0 wt.% TEOS in the dispersed phase and pre-solidified for 3 h have enhanced mechanical intensity, faster adsorption kinetic and larger equilibrium adsorption amount of Cu(II) compared to the porous chitosan microspheres. The mechanical intensity and adsorption rate of the porous hybrid microspheres were 1.5 times and two times of porous chitosan microspheres, respectively. Meantime, the adsorption capacity was increased by 25%. The porous hybrid microspheres have good potentials in the applications of removing heavy metal ions from waste water. (C) 2013 The Authors. Effect of Beading Parameters on Cross-Linked Chitosan Adsorptive Properties

Abstract:Among countless applications, chitosan has the potential to be an effective and cheap adsorbent for pollutant removal in (waste) water. In form of beads, it also exhibits good mechanical and fluid dynamic properties that are suitable for utilization in large-scale adsorption processes (e.g. as column packing). The present study investigates the beading process to prepare chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads by phase inversion method. Beading parameters (i.e. chitosan amount, acid concentration, non-solvent agent concentration, and temperature) are optimized to obtain an appropriate adsorbent structure to uptake large organic molecules (reactive red 2, a dye, is utilized as model pollutant). Chitosan beads present remarkably enhanced adsorption capacity, mainly thanks to increased specific surface area and porosity. The addition of a cross-linker (diepoxyoctane) further improves pollutant removal. The adsorption process is well-fitted by the Freundlich model, suggesting a multilayer adsorption. The kinetic study also substantiates the complexity of the adsorption mechanism on bead surface, which, however, is satisfactorily predicted by a simple fractal kinetic model. Finally, it is proved that chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads can be recycled (by washing with NaOH solution) at least 5 times before sensible performance loss.
Preparation of Freeze-Dried Porous Chitosan Microspheres for the Removal of Hexavalent Chromium

Abstract:Novel porous chitosan microspheres were successfully produced by a freezing–lyophilization drying method in this study and were then used as adsorbents to remove a toxic iron metal, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The effects of the concentration of the chitosan solution, syringe diameter, and freezing time on the morphologies of porous chitosan microspheres were characterized. The metal ion adsorption for Cr(VI) was also studied. Results showed that freezing chitosan hydrogel beads at a temperature of −20 °C and subsequently lyophilizing the frozen structure allowed to easily obtain the porous chitosan microspheres with rough surfaces and large pores, which were more suitable for adsorption materials to remove metal ions. A chitosan solution concentration of 3% (w/v) and a syringe diameter of 500 μm allowed the porous microspheres to have a good sphericity, thinner pore walls, and small pore sizes. The adsorption capacity of porous chitosan microspheres for Cr(VI) increased with the increase in freezing time. The pH of the initial adsorption solution ranged from 3.0 to 5.0 and was beneficial to the maximum adsorption efficiency for Cr(VI). The porous chitosan microspheres prepared with 3% (w/v) chitosan solution at −20 °C for a freezing time of 72 h had a higher adsorption capacity of 945.2 mg/g for Cr(VI) than the those at 24-h and 48-h freezing times. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption process could be described by a pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption rate constant and the adsorption amount at equilibrium for the porous chitosan microspheres increased with an increase in the freezing time, and those for the porous microspheres prepared with 3% chitosan solution at −20 °C for a 72-h freezing time were 1.83 × 10−5 g mg−1 min−1 and 1070.5 mg g−1, respectively. The porous chitosan microspheres have good potential to facilitate the separation and recycling of expensive and toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:The adsorption removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution using polymer nanocomposites has attracted great interest because of their advantages from both nanomaterials and polymers. In this work, a facile and novel method has been developed for surface modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) with carboxymethyl chitosan via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. To obtain resultant CNT based chitosan nanocomposites (CNT-PDA-CS), pristine CNT were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) thin films through self polymerization of dopamine under alkaline aqueous solution. Then PDA modified CNT were further functionalized with carboxymethyl chitosan (CS) via Michael addition reaction. The successful preparation of CNT-PDA-CS nanocomposites was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. The utilization of the resultant CNT-PDA-CS for removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solution was also examined in this work. The results showed that CNT-PDA-CS exhibited obviously enhanced Cu2+ removal capability as compared with the unmodified CNT. Considered the versatility of mussel inspired chemistry, the method described in this work should be a general route for fabricating highly efficient adsorbents, which should be of great interest for environmental applications. Abstract:Chitosan is a natural biopolymer with a modifiable structure and abundant function groups, moreover, it can be processed into various shapes and sizes, making it suitable for various applications. This review analyzed and summarized the recent advances in chitosan-based materials, particularly focusing on the modification of chitosan by physical, chemical and biological methods, which provided plentiful information on the preparation, characterization and application of chitosan-based materials. In this review, various preparation and modification methods for improving chitosan performances, as well as the application of chitosan and its derivatives, were critically analyzed and summarized in detail. Chitosan-based materials can be fabricated into different shapes and sizes, such as nanofiber, nanoparticles, microspheres, membranes, and 3D printed scaffolds. In addition, chitosan can be modified through physical, chemical, and biological modifications, to obtain versatile chitosan-based materials. For physical modification, crosslinking and blending are commonly used., while chemical modification is based on chemical reactions (e.g. acylation, esterification, etherification, N-alkylation, graft copolymerization, and degradation), to prepare the corresponding derivatives (e.g. chemically cross-linked chitosan, grafted chitosan, low molecular weight chitosan, and oligo-chitosan) through crosslinking, grafting, and degradation. The biological modification is associated with various enzymes to realize the hydrolysis or grafting. With improved performances through modification, as well as various shapes and sizes, chitosan-based materials show promising applications in versatile fields, such as water treatment, food processing, pharmaceutical/biomedicine, textiles and agriculture. This review will deepen the understanding the state of the art of chitosan-based materials, including their preparation, characterization and application.
