Abstract:Size- and shape-based separation is an effective complementary process to prepare well-defined materials for fundamental studies and applications. However, the separation of nanoparticles polydisperse in both shape and size remains a great challenge. A mixture of gold nanospheres and nanoplates with a wide standard deviation (SD) (21% for the former and 30% for the latter) were synthesized in the same batch using sun-dried Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract. Size-separation of Au nanoparticles was achieved via density gradient centrifugation and the subsequent shape separation was achieved via agarose gel electrophoresis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that, monodispersed nanospheres (SD: 4–5%) and nanoplates (SD: 6–7%) were obtained separately after the two-step separation below.

Abstract:Gold nanobipyramids (NBPs) have attracted intensive attentions because they exhibit more advantageous plasmonic properties than comparable gold nanorods. However, unlike that short gold nanorods can be synthesized routinely in a high yield (around 99% of the total particles), current syntheses of gold NBPs generally receive a low yield (around 30% of the total particles) and co-produce spherical impurities difficult to separate. Thus an effective purification route of gold NBPs is desirable for optimizing their performances. In this study, we demonstrated that the spherical nanoparticles with smaller inter-particle contact area can be separated from the NBPs that undergo gradual precipitation by electrolyte-induced electrostatic screening. During this procedure, no special surface-functionalization of the NBPs was needed. As a result of this simple separation strategy, NBPs at a level of purity to above 90% is achieved in a single purification round. In particularly, the precipitates of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped NBPs can be easily converted into colloidal state due to the strong steric constraint of CTA+ bilayer, facilitating further investigations.

Abstract:Combining the advantages of information encoding and function realization, DNA-conjugated nanomaterials have attracted great attention recently. As a typical anisotropic material, gold nano-triangle is of great value due to the sharp vertices. However, the yield of nano-triange is not high through current wet synthesis. In order to solve this problem, we propose a new strategy of shape selective separation of gold nano-triangles with the assist of thiol-DNA. The attachment of DNA to the surface of gold nanoparticles, on one hand, can stabilize the nanoparticles by shielding the direct contact between gold nanoparticles and solution environment. On the other hand, according to the particle shape, size and the surface charge density, gold nanoparticles have different mobilities in the electric field. As a result, gold nanoparticles can be separated by gel electrophoresis. The DNA-assist purification method gives a yield of above 80% of gold nano-triangles, which is also universal for the separation of nano-triangles with different sizes. More importantly, the surface-modified DNA can simultaneously separate and encode gold nano-triangles. By rational designing the DNA sequence, nano-triangles can be assembled on DNA origami and higher-order structures can be constructed.
A Cleaning Method with Centrifugation for Removing Surfactants from Gold Nanoparticles and Its Mechanism

Abstract:We developed an effective cleaning method based on a centrifugal effect to remove the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) from the surfaces of noble metallic such as 50 nm gold nano-octahedrons. The cleaned surface can be obtained by choosing the proper centrifugal speed and times under the appropriate temperature and humidity conditions. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are conducted to systematically investigate the adsorbed CTAB layer structure on gold nano-octahedrons surface. The results indicate that CTAB molecules bind to gold surface via their long hydrophobic tail and form a (sub) monolayer on the gold surface, and the bromide ions chemisorbed at the gold surface are desorbed. The dilution effect of water can act on the transformation of CTAB on gold surface during the cleaning procedure. Additionally, a localized solution flow is induced by the polarization of the electrical double layer gold nanoparticle with high speed in a centrifugal field. Mass transfer around the gold nanoparticle is occurring, and thus to be the influences on the surface cleaning of gold nanoparticles. We also performed the cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies in 0.5 mol/L sulfuric acid solution and alkaline solution contained with 0.1 mol/L NaOH + 1.0 m mol/L Pb(NO3)2, used the gold nano-octahedrons film as electrode. The results suggest that, after the cleaning procedures with centrifugation, the surface of gold nano-octahedrons can be purified enough to be used for electrochemical studies instead of traditional gold (111) facets.
Highly Pure Gold Nanotriangles with almost 100% Yield for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Gold nanotriangle (Au NT), a unique anisotropic-shaped plasmonic nanostructure with distinctive optical, electrical, and catalytic characteristics, has been utilized in a variety of high-technological applications. However, the basic and practical applications of Au NTs are often hindered by size and yield (less than 60%) and engineering a facile and manageable approach to acquire Au NTs with high yields is still challenging. Herein, a simple and rapid seed-mediated method to prepare high-purity Au NTs (up to 97.4%) is proposed by precisely controlling the reaction kinetics. Importantly, there are two key factors to achieve high-yield Au NTs (70%) during the two-growth synthesis: (1) the high concentration of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) that can provide a greater binding force on the ⟨111⟩ facet of Au seed and (2) the selective adsorption of potassium iodide (KI) on the ⟨111⟩ facet. Additionally, Au NTs with a wide range of sizes from 58 to 137 nm with a high uniformity can be tailored by a small window parameter regulation. Additionally, it is found that the addition of optimized salts can induce the rapid precipitation of Au NTs to form self-assembled microfibers and the efficient purification of Au NTs with a yield of about 97.4%. Furthermore, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation shows that anisotropic electromagnetic field enhancements and hot spot excitation modes can be generated in different assembling models of Au NTs. Finally, we construct macroscopic two-dimensional (2D) ordered monolayer films of Au NTs through volatilizing self-assembly. As a proof of concept, the ordered Au NT arrays exhibit both high surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensitivity and detecting stability compared to random assembling structures and Au NPs. Therefore, we believe that our proposed rapid synthesis and high-yield purification approach of Au NTs would pave a way to prepare designed nanomaterials for a variety of basic and high-technological practical applications.

Abstract:Development of simple processes to fractionate synthetic mixtures of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into individual species is crucial to many applications. Existing methods for single-chirality SWCNT purification are cumbersome, often requiring multiple steps and different conditions for different species. Here, we report a method to achieve total fractionation of a synthetic SWCNT mixture by countercurrent chromatography, resulting in purification of many single-chirality SWCNT species in a single run. This method is based on a tunable partition of sodium deoxycholate dispersed SWCNTs in a polyethylene glycol/dextran aqueous two-phase system. By running the mobile phase with 0.02% of sodium deoxycholate and a gradient of sodium dodecyl sulfate from 0.1% to 0.7% (w/w), we observe clear diameter-dependent elution, with ∼ 90% total recovery. Among all the fractions collected, a number of them are enriched in single-chirality (9,4), (7,5), (7,6), (8,3), (6,5) species, while most of the remaining ones contain no more than 2-3 major species. We also observe strong (n,m)-dependent elution peak width due to the enantiomer-resolved partition. These results demonstrate countercurrent chromatography (CCC) as an effective way to obtain high purity (n, m) species, and suggest the potential of CCC as an analytical tool for chirality distribution mapping of synthetic SWCNT mixtures.

Abstract:Negatively charged liposomes accomplished both functions as a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of gold nanotriangles (GNTs). Liposomes are based on a mixture of phospholipids phosphatidylcholine/phosphoglycerol, and they were used as a template phase to perform the GNTs. The method was evaluated under different conditions such as temperature, reaction time, phosphoglycerol chain length, and precursor concentration. Isotropic and anisotropic gold nanoparticles are formed simultaneously during the synthesis. Therefore, by combining centrifugation and depletion flocculation strategies, the sample was concentrated in terms of GNTs from 15% crude to 80% by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). As a result, a green colored dispersion was obtained containing highly purified, well-defined, negatively charged GNTs, where the edge length of most particles is centered in the range of 60-80 nm with an average thickness of 7.8 +/- 0.1 nm. By this purification process, it was possible to highly increase the yield in terms of GNTs. Other surfactants [cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Tween 20, and dodecyldimethylammonium bromide] were evaluated during the purification stage, and both CTAB and CTAC show similar results to those obtained by using SDS. These GNTs are potential candidates for future applications in molecular imaging, photothermal therapy, drug delivery, biosensing, and photodynamic therapy.
A Simple Method to Self-Assemble Two-dimensional and Three-dimensional Superlattices of Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:Citrate-capped gold nanoparticles with narrow diameter distribution were prepared by the reduction of chloroauric acid with borohydride. After the gold nanoparticles were transferred to toluene solution through ligand conformation change, close-packed two-dimensional nanocrystal lattices were obtained on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) copper grids by evaporating approximately 10 µL of concentrated particle dispersion. The formation of the thiolate gold nanoparticles was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and FTIR spectra. The 2D Fourier transform power spectra of the monolayer confirmed the supperlattices’ hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, long-range-ordered bilayer superlattices, of which the nanoparticles in the top layer piled on the ones in the bottom layer, could also be observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:The rapidly developing miniaturization in numerous fields require low-demanding but robust methods of nanomaterial production. Colloidal synthesis provides great flexibility in product material, size, and shape. Gold nanoparticle synthesis has been thoroughly studied, however, recent reports on mechanistic insights of crystal formation have been hindered by the numerous procedures and parameter optimization works. With every new study, scientists fill another blank space on the map of understanding anisotropic growth and find out the critical parameters. In the current work, we highlight the choice importance for surfactant supplier in achieving the gold nanotriangle formation. We systematically study the variation in the shape yield when utilizing five batches of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) from varied suppliers. Using analytical techniques, we search for deviations causing such variation, e.g. different impurity content. We found only a marginal effect of iodine contamination on the studied system, excluding this factor as decisive in contrast to what was proposed earlier in the literature, and leaving the high dependency of the yield to originate from yet unknown reagent characteristics. A deeper understanding of these factors would provide highly effective protocols lowering the reagent consumption and increasing the accessibility of nanomaterials manufactured in a sustainable manner.

On-demand shape and size purification of nanoparticle based on surface area

Abstract:In order to overcome the serious deficiencies of the traditional aqueous centrifugation method in on-demand purification of metal nanoparticles, we have theoretically and experimentally developed a simple purification method based on the nanoparticles' surface area discrepancy, which can separate particles with the same mass but different shapes. As an example, we apply this method to obtain on demand homogeneous Au triangular nanoplates, and tune the plasmon modes of Au nanoplates into resonance with the emission of quantum dots to achieve fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between them. Moreover, due to their high homogeneity, the purified Au triangular nanoplates exhibit an excellent sensitivity to refractive index, as high as 963 nm RIU(-1) (approaching the theoretical value of 982 nm RIU(-1)), which leads to high gauging accuracy, up to 80 ppb and 1.0 U, for sensing bovine serum albumin and DNA polymerase in solution, respectively. Our work introduces a facile, effective strategy for the separation of nanoparticles, which could obtain building blocks with scalable uniform nanosize, providing a path to precise control of metal nanoparticle's plasmon modes and efficient fabrication of nanodevices.

Abstract:We describe a surfactant-promoted reductive route for the shape-controlled synthesis of gold nanostructures by hydrothermal treatment of chloroauric acid in the presence of the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) without using reducing agent. The results show that the cationic surfactant CTAB provides the dual function of promoting AuIII reduction to Au0 and size- and shape-controlled synthesis of the gold nanocrystals. More importantly, the benefit of the present work stems from the first report on the controlled synthesis of gold nanostructures by hydrothermal treatment of chloroauric acid in the presence of the surfactant CTAB without using reducing agent. Abstract:Alternate pumping chromatography is applied to obtain atomically precise glutathione-stabilized gold nanoclusters in high purity from synthesized mixtures. On the basis of anion exchange chromatography, the feasibility of isolating a single cluster, Au10GSH10, as well as two different clusters simultaneously (Au25GSH18 and Au29GSH20) is demonstrated. In addition, Au18GSH14, which is present only in trace amounts, is successfully enriched. A simple design procedure is proposed that allows using columns with different retention behavior. Successful experiments with large injection amounts confirm the potential of the concept for preparative-scale productions of high-quality nanoparticulate products.

Abstract:Chirality separation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is key to enabling applications in single photon sources, optoelectronic devices and bioimaging, and it generally requires multiple separation steps to obtain single chirality species with the desired purity. In this work, we report the use of a novel sodium hyodeoxycholate (SHC) surfactant for separation of single-chirality SWCNTs. The results demonstrated that chirality-selective adsorption and desorption of SWCNTs on a gel column can be achieved readily by modulating the concentrations of the SHC-based mixed surfactants. Through an optimized one-step procedure, single-chirality (6,5) SWCNTs were successfully separated, and the chirality purity was estimated to be 97% by using a spectroscopic approach, exceeding most reported purities for traditional surfactant-based one- or multiple-step separations. Due to the ultrahigh chirality resolution of the present method, the (6,5) SWCNTs can also be effectively separated from different SWCNT materials with various diameter or chirality distributions, even from materials containing very few (6,5) SWCNTs. The high-purity chirality separation demonstrated in this work lays an important foundation for the industrial production and applications of single-chirality SWCNTs.

Abstract:With the rapidly growing applications, efficient purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has become one of the key problems. This paper proposes Freon-CO2-assisted purification of SWCNTs, where CO2 can oxidize the graphitized carbon layer to expose iron (Fe) impurities, while the chlorine from Freon can react with the Fe impurities to form low-boiling-point metal chlorides that can be eliminated in a gas stream. After an acid washing with a very small amount of hydrochloric acid, the last remaining metal impurities are removed and highly pure SWCNTs are produced. Compared with traditional strong-acid-oxidation purification or high-temperature-vacuum purification, this method can maintain the structure and length of the SWCNTs. Raman spectra show that an I G/I D ratio of more than 100 can be obtained. This purification method can maintain the microstructure and excellent properties of SWCNTs and provide a solution for the preparation of high-quality SWCNTs to exert their properties.

Abstract:Although gel chromatography has demonstrated excellent structural separation ability with semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), structural separation of metallic SWCNTs remains a challenge due to their weak interactions with dextran-based gel media. In this work, we report a cholate derivative, sodium hyodeoxycholate (SHC), and apply it to the separation of metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs. The results demonstrate that the adsorbability of metallic SWCNTs coated by SHC and SDS surfactants on dextran-based gel can be dynamically enhanced through the addition of NaOH, and the difference in the adsorption order between metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs remains sufficiently large for their separation. In the absence of SHC, the separation efficiency and purity of metallic SWCNTs are dramatically reduced. On the basis of SHC-based mixed surfactants, diameter-controllable separation is achieved for both metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs ranging in diameter from 1.2 to 1.8 nm. The high-purity metallic SWCNTs obtained exhibit lower baseline absorption and a higher Raman radial breathing mode to G-band intensity ratio compared with that obtained by the conventional method, which is contributed by the effective removal of amorphous carbon and nanotube bundles. This work provides an effective strategy for single chirality and enantiomeric separation of metallic SWCNTs.

Abstract:A facile while flexible approach to size-controllable high-purity colloidal gold nanoplates has been presented. By adjusting the quantity of seeds and I-through a seed-mediated, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr)-assisted synthetic system, the edge length of the gold nanoplates can be adjusted from 140 to 30 nm without changing their thickness or crystal structure. By simply increasing the ion concentration of the reaction solution, the as-prepared gold nanoplates can be deposited due to the different electrostatic aggregation effects between nanoplates and spherical nanoparticles. Effective storage methods to keep the structural and optical stability of these gold nanoplates are also proposed.

This strategy is based on chiral angle discriminated adsorption of soluble condensed benzenoid aromatic molecules on SWCNTs, which induce different dispersibility of SWCNTs in various organic solvents. The proposed tandem extraction strategy involves two extraction steps, in which the first step extracts metallic SWCNTs with large chiral angles and the subsequent step enriches large chiral angle semiconducting SWCNTs. This separation strategy is tested on a series of condensed benzenoid aromatic molecules. Both experimental and theoretical results show that the separation efficiency is strongly dependent on the molecular morphology, i.e. higher aspect ratio gives better separation results. The separation efficiency is also dependent on the SWCNT diameter and the solvent properties. This tandem extraction strategy may also be applied to other available noncovalent separation reagents to improve their separation efficiency.

Abstract:Purification and length separation of oxidatively shortened single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were achieved by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) without assistant reagents for dispersion. Almost all the carbonaceous impurities, such as carbonaceous particles, graphene fragments, can be removed from the oxidatively shortened SWNTs materials. The short carbon nanotubes were separated into fractions according to nanotube lengths, and the length distribution of each fraction was relatively narrow.
