Abstract:Software-defined radio (SDR), one of solutions to realize multi-mode terminal for mobile communication standards, has attracted intensive studies. A wideband wireless receiver is designed in a 40-nm CMOS process for SDR, which can cover the frequency range from 100MHz to 2GHz. The wideband RF front-end includes a low noise amplifier (LNA), a mixer, intermediate frequency amplifier (IF AMP) and a variable gain amplifier (VGA). The focal point of the design lies in the wideband LNA. The wideband inductorless LNA with 1.1-V supply is a two-stage amplifier that can operates from 100MHz to 2GHz. The noise figure (NF) of the LNA is 2.2-2.4 dB while it can achieve gains of 24-12 dB and 0- -12 dB when working under the active mode and passive mode, respectively. The whole system provides a NF of 3.2-3.5 dB with 5.02mw power consumption.

Abstract:A New S-band small volume,low power consumption,high receiver sensitivity and high dynamic range micro-transponder is designed and implemented for pico-satellite.The transponder is based on software defined radio,and uses digital integer-N phase locked loop chips for frequency synthesizer.The whole architecture has advantages of modulability,flexibility and simplicity.Implemented on a 16.5 cm×10 cm printed circuit board,the transponder was tested with the performances of 4.5 W power consumption,26 dBm transmit power,-136 dBm receiver sensitivity under the condition of 1 kHz loop bandwidth,and more than 80 dB receiver dynamic range.The transponder satisfies the requirements of pico-satellite with the altitude less than 1 000 km.

Abstract:In this paper, key design considerations in self-demodulators at millimeter wave range for short-range software-defined transceivers are presented. Oscillator-less demodulators are used to achieve a wide operating range with low power consumption. The proposed demodulator, featured with a new single-input differential- output low noise amplifier and implemented in 0.18-mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology, is able to demodulate Gb/s data signal with a minimum sensitivity of -43 dBm from a carrier frequency of 40-60 GHz, while consuming 12 mW from a 1.5 V supply.

Abstract:A photonic radiofrequency (RF) receiver utilizing a phase modulator (PM) and a tunable single sideband (SSB) optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this scheme, the RF signal to be detected is modulated on the PM in one optical path, while a local oscillation (LO) signal is optically generated by the SSB OEO in the other optical path. After combining two paths of optical signals via an optical coupler, an immediate frequency (IF) signal is obtained by photonic RF downconversion in a photodetector (PD). Through scanning the LO signal and monitoring the IF signal simultaneously, the input unknown RF signal can be detected. In the experiment, the RF tones with the operating frequency from 8.1 to 12.1 GHz are successfully detected. The minimum detectable RF power at 10.1 GHz is −84.6 dBm, and the spurious free dynamic range of the photonic RF receiver measured is about 73.8 dB/Hz2/3.
Design of a Software-Defined Transceiver with High Flexibility for Sensing Applications

Abstract:This paper proposed a design of software-defined transceiver: A low-power digital baseband processor (DBP) was designed and fabricated in $40 nm$ CMOS process. The modulator and channel coding parameters of the DBP can be re-configured while the proposed design is used in different scenarios. A design flow of software-defined transceivers based on a COTS (Commercial Off-the-Shelf) radio platform was proposed. A programmable transceiver paired with the DBP was proposed and implemented on this platform, enabling the ability to interface with different higher layer protocols. Simulation results show that the DBP consumes $92.8 \mu W$ power in a work load of 840 kbps, and the programmable transceiver can achieve a bit error rate of $10^{-4}$ at the signal to noise ratio of 15 dB. The proposed transceiver has been verified in the bench test.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and demonstrate a silicon-based integrated photonic-assisted emitter. It consists of an aperiodically distributed traveling wave photodetector (TWPD), a compact Yagi antenna and a bias circuitry network. The measured radiated power of this emitter is above -20 dBm from 31 GHz to 38 GHz. Furthermore, a wireless data transmission at 3/5/8 Gbps is demonstrated.

Abstract:Photonic radio frequency (RF) switches are promising to replace conventional electronic RF switches in modern RF communication systems owing to their high switching speed and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, existing photonic RF switches are generally based on fre-quency or polarization filtering. Thus, they require more light sources and filters to increase the number of switch-ing channels, consequently limiting scalability. We propose a silicon-integrated photonic RF switch based on optical switching. RF signals are first modulated into the optical domain and switched through phase control of the phase shifters in the optical switch. Switching is not related to the frequency or polarization of the optical carriers, thus reducing the number of light sources required. Experimen-tal results demonstrate 10-GHz switching of two RF signals with frequencies of 20 GHz and 30 GHz. The proposed pho-tonic RF switch can be further expanded to form a large switch matrix, possibly contributing to the development of large-scale RF communication systems. & COPY; 2023 Optica Pub-lishing Group

Abstract:In this paper, a low power wideband receiver for Software-Defined Radio (SDR) is presented. In SDR design, the receiver should be able to receive signals over a broad-bandwidth so that a variety of different communication standards can be covered. In the proposed design, a 0.1-6 GHz analog front-end for SDR is demonstrated. Implemented in a standard 40nm CMOS technology, the proposed receiver is realized without inductors and able to work between 0.1-6 GHz while consuming less than 4.55mA current from a single 1.1-V supply voltage.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast terahertz (THz) photonic wireless communication link in the 350 GHz band with up to 100 Gbit/s data rate, with an emphasis on extending its wireless reach. By combining the techniques of using a cutting-edge narrow-band uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) as the THz photo-mixing emitter, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we successfully transmit 25 GBaud/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals (overall 100 Gbit/s data rate) over a 350 GHz wireless link with an extended distance of 2 m. This achievement pushes the accessibility of ultrafast 100 Gbit/s wireless communication beyond the state-of-the-art, and makes 100 Gbit/s ultrafast THz wireless communication systems promising for future smart high speed wireless access services.

Abstract:This article presents a re-configurable hybrid millimeter-wave (mm-wave) software-defined radio (SDR) receiver that integrates silicon photonics (SiPhs) and complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) chips. The SDR system leverages a programmable photonic integrated circuit (PIC) with high- $Q$ filters, enabling versatile channel selection, image rejection, and jammer rejection capabilities over a tunable frequency range of 30–45 GHz and a bandwidth of 3–5 GHz. It is also capable of autonomously detecting and simultaneously rejecting up to four out-of-band (OOB) blockers, providing $>$ 80-dB rejection for two blockers (45 dB from the bandpass filter (BPF) and $>$ 35 dB from the notch filter) and $>$ 65 dB for four blockers (the notch filter provides $>$ 20 dB) for blockers as close as 1.25 GHz to the desired signal to enhance SDR robustness in crowded spectral environments. Moreover, signal downconversion and compensation for photonics-based losses yield an in-band spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 50 dB over 5-GHz bandwidth (BW) and an error vector magnitude (EVM) measurement of $-$ 30 dB when processing a 100-MSymbol/s 64-QAM signal under the influence of two $-$ 10-dBm OOB blockers at 5-and 10-GHz offsets. Based on the agreement between simulation and measurement results, this article discusses link optimization and provides a recommendation for improvements in SFDR.

Abstract:This paper proposes the concept of a comprehensive photonic-assisted cognitive radio regulatory system based on a multi-node acquisition network and reports the implementation of the architecture. Characterizing the wide frequency operation range with the extended spatial coverage, the demonstration is performed by the photonic transceiver front-end equipped with the spectrum sensing network founded on cascaded multiple photonic integrated chips. That enables the joint characteristic cognition of various signal parameters and information, providing the capability for radar and communication applications in the same hardware. Experimental results show that the presented system can not only identify the parameters of various external interferences for X/K-band radar and adjust the operating frequency band in time to avoid disturbance but also monitor the usage of communication spectrum resources and achieve the dynamic access of new service in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication. Besides, the system employing the integrated chips exhibits comparable performance by contrast with commercial devices as an alternative to cascaded chips, whether for radar interference avoidance or adaptive allocation of communication spectrum resources. The reported configuration promotes innovative development of combination in present photonic modules and integrated components, representing a crucial step towards the complexity reduction of versatile cognitive applications.

Abstract:This paper reports an implementation of the PHY specifications of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for the frequency band 868 915 MHz on a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform. This standard is defined for low power, low data rate and low cost wireless networks. These specifications are used by the Zigbee technology for various applications such as home automation, industry monitoring or medical surveillance. Several hardware PHY 868/915 MHz band IEEE 802.15.4 transceiver implementations have been already reported on ASIC and FPG [1] [2]. SDR offers one possibility to realize a transceiver with high flexibility and reconfigurability [3]. The whole transmitter and receiver chain has been defined in software using the GNU Radio software project [4] and the USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) platform from Ettus Research [5]. Two new blocks have been added to the GNU Radio project, one for the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum and the second for the reconstruction of the packets. The experimentations have been performed in a noisy environment and the PER, BER and SNR have been computed. The obtained results are coherent with what can be expected from the theory.

Abstract:A 0.1–4 GHz software-defined radio (SDR) receiver with reconfigurable 10–100 MHz signal bandwidth is presented. The complete system design methodology, taking blocker effects into account, is provided. Fully differential Op-Amp with Miller feedback and feed-forward compensations is proposed to support wideband analog circuits with low power consumption. The stability and isolation of inverter-based trans-conductance amplifier are analyzed in details. The design approach of high linearity Tow-Thomas trans-impedance amplifier is presented to reject out-of-band blockers. To compensate for PVT variations, IIP2, frequency tuning, DC offset and IQ calibration are also integrated on-chip. The SDR receiver has been implemented in 65 nm CMOS, with 1.2/2.5 V power supply and a core chip area of 2.4 mm 2 . The receiver achieves S11 input matching below −10 dB and a NF of 3–8 dB across the 0.1–4 GHz range, and a maximum gain of 82–92 dB with a 70 dB dynamic range. Dissipated power spans from 30 to 90 mW across this entire frequency range. For LTE application with 20 MHz signal bandwidth and a LO frequency of 2.3 GHz, the receiver consumes 21 mA current.
Extreme Software Defined Radio -- GHz in Real Time

Abstract:Software defined radio is a widely accepted paradigm for design of reconfigurable modems. The continuing march of Moore's law makes real-time signal processing on general purpose processors feasible for a large set of waveforms. Data rates in the low Mbps can be processed on low-power ARM processors, and much higher data rates can be supported on large x86 processors. The advantages of all-software development (vs. FPGA/DSP/GPU) are compelling: much wider pool of talent, lower development time and cost, and easier maintenance and porting. However, very high-rate systems (above 100 Mbps) are still firmly in the domain of custom and semi-custom hardware (mostly FPGAs). In this paper we describe an architecture and testbed for an SDR that can be easily scaled to support over 3 GHz of bandwidth and data rate up to 10 Gbps. The paper covers a novel technique to parallelize typically serial algorithms for phase and symbol tracking, followed by a discussion of data distribution for a massively parallel architecture. We provide a brief description of a mixed-signal front end and conclude with measurement results. To the best of the author's knowledge, the system described in this paper is an order of magnitude faster than any prior published result.

Abstract:A fully-integrated reconfigurable dual-band (760-960 MHz and 2.4-2.5 GHz) transceiver (TRX) for short range wireless communications is presented. The TRX consists of two individually-optimized RF front-ends for each band and one shared power-scalable analog baseband. The sub-GHz receiver has achieved the maximum 75 dBc 3rd-order harmonic rejection ratio (HRR3) by inserting a Q-enhanced notch filtering RF amplifier (RFA). In 2.4 GHz band, a single-ended-to-differential RFA with gain/phase imbalance compensation is proposed in the receiver. A Sigma Delta fractional-N PLL frequency synthesizer with two switchable Class-C VCOs is employed to provide the LOs. Moreover, the integrated multi-mode PAs achieve the output P1dB (OP1dB) of 16.3 dBm and 14.1 dBm with both 25% PAE for sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, respectively. A power-control loop is proposed to detect the input signal PAPR in real-time and flexibly reconfigure the PA's operation modes to enhance the back-off efficiency. With this proposed technique, the PAE of the sub-GHz PA is improved by x3.24 and x1.41 at 9 dB and 3 dB back-off powers, respectively, and the PAE of the 2.4 GHz PA is improved by x2.17 at 6 dB back-off power. The presented transceiver has achieved comparable or even better performance in terms of noise figure, HRR, OP1dB and power efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art.

Abstract:A photonics-assisted RF transceiver with simultaneous image rejection and self-interference cancellation for full-duplex communication is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The image rejection is realized in receiver by carrier-suppressed double-sideband modulation with tunable phase and sideband filtering. The intermediate frequency (IF) signal to be transmitted is utilized as the reference signal to cancel the self-interference caused by the high-power transmitted signal. Compared to the self-interference cancellation in the RF domain, the proposed scheme realizes the self-interference cancellation in the IF domain, thereby reducing the requirement for precise delay regulation. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out with the results showing that an image rejection ratio of 27.1 dB and self-interference cancellation depth of 20.4 dB with 1 GHz bandwidth. The weak signal of interest (SOI) with 16-QAM modulation is successfully recovered by the scheme with the cancellation of image interference and self-interference. The maximum interference to SOI power ratio is measured with 20.5 dB for image interference and 18.7 dB for self-interference.

Abstract:The implementation of software‐defined radio necessitates a versatile radio frequency (RF) front‐end that can support multiple standards in different frequency bands. This article presents the state‐of‐the‐art multiband and wideband mixers in the context of different receiver architectures suitable for software‐defined radio (SDR). Wideband and multiband mixer designs reported in the literature are categorized on the basis of their circuit architecture. This study tabulates the results of mixer designs with an emphasis on noise figure (NF), conversion gain (CG), linearity, and image rejection ratio. The best parameters reported in the comparison are 68–84 dB of CG, 3.2 dB of NF, 2.5 mW of power consumption, 12.5 dBm of third‐order input intercept point, and 0.015 mm2 of area at different frequencies. The study also discusses the design challenges and techniques to overcome those issues. The article concludes with the summary and prospective developments for SDR architectures.

Wideband Fraction-N Frequency Synthesizer Design for Software-Defined Radio

Abstract:This paper presents two wideband fractional-N frequency synthesizers designed in a 0.13-μm CMOS technology for software-defined radio applications. The first synthesizer adopts a quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) with a new phase shifter scheme, which shows better phase noise performance and more stable oscillation. Combining harmonic rejection and single sideband mixing, a harmonic-rejection SSBmixer (HR-SSBmixer) is developed to suppress unwanted sidebands and spurious signals. The HRSSBmixer serves as a power-saving solution to generate the local oscillator (LO) signal for the 802.11a standard by avoiding power-hungry poly-phase filters or high-frequency LO buffers and dividers. The second synthesizer adopts a dualmode voltage-controlled oscillator (DMVCO). The DMVCO allows the synthesizer to leverage single-sideband mixing, a power efficient approach, for high-frequency LO signal generation. When compared to the QVCO approach, the DMVCO solution allows the synthesizer to provide continuous LO signals without frequency gaps. Both synthesizers support wireless standards including DVB-T, GSM, WCDMA, TDSCDMA, WLAN802.11 a/big and Bluetooth. The measurement results show that the synthesizers' frequency range, phase noise, settling time and the spur performances meet the design specifications of the standards mentioned above. The QVCO-based synthesizer occupies an active area of 1.86 mm2 and consumes 35 to 52 mW of power, while the DMVCO-based synthesizer occupies an area of 2.3 mm2 and consumes 34 to 77 mW of power.

Abstract:Software defined radio is both the popular research direction of the modern communication and the key technology of the third generation mobile communication. In this paper, the principle and the structure of software defined radio, which are more essential such as the open bus architecture, smart antenna, RF module, high-speed switcher module, high-speed DSP module, and multi-package were described. To improve the operation performance and perfect the existing software defined radio system further, the high-speed A/D switcher technology and DSP bottleneck problem were discussed in detail. Afterwards, the hardware models and the relevant solutions were clearly given. Through system simulation, the results show that the proposed software defined radio system has higher performance by the above-mentioned novel methods.
