Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous interest because of their rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from the initial PCE of 3.8% for the first prototype to the certified PCE of 25.2% in 2019. However, the inherent chemical instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halides influenced by moisture, heat and ultraviolet light is still a critical issue for them to meet application-specific requirements owing to the weak-bonded organic components in the hybrid crystal structure. The use of all-inorganic perovskites CsPbI3-xBrx (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) as light-harvesters by completely substituting organic species with inorganic Cs+ ions has been recently regarded as a promising solar conversion technology. Since the initial efficiency of 2.9% achieved in 2015, the highest PCE record for inorganic PSCs has risen to 18.4% through structure optimization, compositional engineering, interfacial engineering, solvent control and surface passivation, etc. This article is dedicated to providing an up-to-date review on the development of inorganic PSCs tailored by various inorganic perovskite materials with gradually changed optical properties and stability, as well as the film-making methods and interfacial engineering technologies. Their limited efficiencies in theory and recombination mechanisms are also predicted with a detailed balance model. Finally, we focused on the state-of-the-art strategies for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and identified new challenges and outlooks for future studies in this field.
High Performance Inverted RbCsFAPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells Based on Interface Engineering and Defects Passivation.

Abstract:Lead halide‐based perovskites solar cells (PSCs) are intriguing candidates for photovoltaic technology due to their high efficiency, low cost, and simple fabrication processes. Currently, PSCs with efficiencies of >25% are mainly based on methylammonium (MA)‐free and bromide (Br) free, formamide lead iodide (FAPbI3)‐based perovskites, because MA is thermally unstable due to its volatile nature and Br incorporation will induce blue shift in the absorption spectrum. Therefore, MA‐free, Br‐free formamidine‐based perovskites are drawing huge research attention in recent years. The hole transporting layer (HTL) is crucial in fabricating highly efficient and stable inverted p‐i‐n structured PSCs by enhancing charge extraction, lowering interfacial recombination, and altering band alignment, etc. Here, this work employs a NiOx/PTAA bi‐layer HTL combined with GuHCl (guanidinium hydrochloride) additive engineering and PEAI (phenylethylammonium iodide) passivation strategy to optimize the charge carrier dynamics and tune defects chemistry in the MA‐free, Br‐free RbCsFAPbI3‐based perovskite absorber, which boosts the device efficiency up to 22.78%. Additionally, the device retains 95% of its initial performance under continuous 1 sun equivalent LED light illumination at 45 °C for up to 500 h.
High-performance inverted polymer solar cells: Device characterization, optical modeling, and hole-transporting modifications

Abstract:Although high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) have already been demonstrated in conventional structure polymer solar cells (PSCs), the development of high performance inverted structure polymer solar cells is still lagging behind despite their demonstrated superior stability and feasibility for roll-to-roll processing. To address this challenge, a detailed study of solution-processed, inverted-structure PSCs based on the blends of a low bandgap polymer, poly(indacenodithiophene-co-phananthrene-quinoxaline) (PIDT-PhanQ) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layer is carried out. Comprehensive characterization and optical modeling of the resulting devices is performed to understand the effect of device geometry on photovoltaic performance. Excellent device performance can be achieved by optimizing the optical field distribution and spatial profiles of excitons generation within the active layer in different device configurations. In the inverted structure, because the peak of the excitons generation is located farther away from the electron-collecting electrode, a higher blending ratio of fullerene is required to provide higher electron mobility in the BHJ for achieving good device performance.
Photoconductive Charge Transfer Complexes as Charge Transport Layers for High Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Photoconductive charge transfer complexes made of p‐type polymers and n‐type PCBM are employed as charge transport as well as power conversion layers to improve the efficiency and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells. Charge transport layers (CTLs) are critical for achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, the p‐type bulk heterojunction (p‐BHJ, i.e., PCBM doped PTAA) and n‐type BHJ (n‐BHJ, i.e., PBDTTT‐C‐T doped PCBM) charge transfer complexes are employed as hole and electron transport layers, respectively, to fabricate inverted PSCs. The photo‐induced charge transfer between p‐type and n‐type organic semiconductors in the BHJ layers provides extra photoconductivity for enhanced charge transport and quasi‐Fermi level splitting, hence enhancing the fill factor and open‐circuit voltage of PSCs. The p‐BHJ layer helps to improve the crystallinity and light absorption of perovskite, whilst the n‐BHJ layer provides extra light absorption and charge generation to boost the short‐circuit current. The combination of p‐BHJ and n‐BHJ CTLs in Cs0.05(FA0.92MA0.08)0.95Pb (I0.92Br0.08)3 based inverted PSCs synergistically enhances the PCE from 18.3% to 22.6% with superior operational and thermal stabilities, and showing a negligible dependence on the thickness of these BHJ CTLs. Density functional theory simulations show that the formation energy of BHJ complex is critical in determining the doping effect and the ultimate performance enhancement of PSCs.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">It is imperative to improve the quality of light absorber and reduce the charge‐carrier recombination for efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a synergistic regulation strategy that combines the tailoring of crystallinity and construction of multilayer cascade charge transport layers (CTLs) for inverted CsPbI2Br solar cells is presented. The film quality of CsPbI2Br is well tuned via F− doping. In addition, gradient energy alignment between perovskite and CTLs, i.e., NiOx/Zn:CuGaO2/perovskite and perovskite/TiO2/PC61BM/ZnO, favors the charge transfer and depresses carrier recombination. Noticeably, the TiO2 interlayer with deep valence band maximum effectively blocks the hole back‐transfer from perovskite to PC61BM. These unique characteristics of the novel structured CsPbI2Br device give a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.10% along with good thermal and operational stability. Moreover, the graded CTLs can be expanded to methylammonium‐free hybrid perovskite device (Eg = ≈1.76 eV) by delivering a PCE of 18.12%, showing great promise in tandem solar cells for use as top cell. </section>

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted perovskite solar cells (i-PSCs) is lower than that of the normal structures. The low efficiency is mainly ascribed to the inferior properties of commonly used [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) electron transport layers (ETLs) such as complexity in achieving high-quality films, low electron mobility, imperfect energy level for electron extraction, and large electron capture region. Herein, the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) ETLs composed of PCBM and polymers are developed. The electron mobility of the BHJ film is enhanced by more than three times compared with PCBM, leading to efficient electron extraction. The electron capture region of the BHJ film decreases to 1.20 x 10(-18) from 3.70 x 10(-17) cm(-3) for PCBM due to increased relative permittivity, which reduces the trap-assistant recombination at the interface. Meanwhile, the devices with BHJ exhibit good stability regardless of illumination and dark storage conditions owing to the more hydrophobic BHJ films and full coverage of perovskite surface, which effectively prevent the moisture permeation into the perovskite devices. It is believed that this breakthrough provides a suitable approach to improve the efficiency and stability of i-PSCs.
Multifunctional Hybrid Interfacial Layers for High‐Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Challenges remain hindering the performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly for the nonstable interface between lead halide perovskite and charge extraction metal oxide layer. Herein, we report a simple yet scalable interfacial strategy to facilitate the assemble of high‐performance inverted PSCs and scale‐up modules. The hybrid interfacial layer containing self‐assembly triphenylamine and conjugated poly(arylamine) simultaneously improves the chemical stability, charge extraction and energy level alignment of hole‐selective interface, meanwhile promoting perovskite crystallization. Consequently, the correspondent inverted PSCs and modules achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.5% and 20.7% (aperture area of 19.4 cm2), respectively. The PSCs maintained over 80% of its initial efficiency under one‐sun equivalent illumination of 1200 hours. This strategy is also effective to perovskite with various bandgaps, demonstrating the highest PCE of 19.6% for the 1.76‐eV bandgap PSCs. Abstract:All‐inorganic perovskites have attracted substantial interest due to their outstanding thermal stability. However, the device performance is still inferior to the typical organic–inorganic counterparts because of the unsatisfying phase stability and defects of the inorganic perovskite films. Herein, a multistrategy to optimize CsPbI 2 Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on dopant‐free poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) by applying thienylmethylamine acetate additive to enhance the α phase stability and passivate the bulk defects of CsPbI 2 Br perovskite is successfully demonstrated, followed by implementing BTCIC‐4Cl interlayer at CsPbI 2 Br/P3HT interface, which can coordinate with both perovskite and P3HT to suppress the surface defects and promote the hole transport. Benefitting from these, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.3% is achieved, and the unencapsulated optimized device can retain 97% of the initial PCE after aging under N 2 atmosphere at 85 °C for 530 h. This work opens up a new era of multistrategy for improving performance and stability of CsPbI 2 Br PSCs based on dopant‐free hole transport layer.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PVSCs), as a competing technology with traditional inorganic solar cells, have now realized a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.1%. In PVSCs, interfacial carrier recombination is one of the dominant energy-loss mechanisms, which also results in the simultaneous loss of potential efficiency. In this work, for planar inverted PVSCs, the carrier recombination is dominated by the dopant concentration in the p-doped hole transport layers (HTLs), since the F4-TCNQ dopant induces more charge traps and electronic transmission channels, thus leading to a decrease in open-circuit voltages (VOC ). This issue is efficiently overcome by inserting a thin insulating polymer layer (poly(methyl methacrylate) or polystyrene) as a passivation layer with an appropriate thickness, which allows for increases in the VOC without significantly sacrificing the fill factor. It is believed that the passivation layer attributes to the passivation of interfacial recombination and the suppression of current leakage at the perovskite/HTL interface. By manipulating this interfacial passivation technique, a high PCE of 20.3% is achieved without hysteresis. Consequently, this versatile interfacial passivation methodology is highly useful for further improving the performance of planar inverted PVSCs.

Abstract:Planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with perovskite and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) heterojunction have attracted much interest because they can be fabricated by a low-temperature process and exhibit high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Various compositional engineering and interface engineering approaches have been applied to produce high-performance PSC devices. In this study, we found that high-quality lead halide crystal precursor has a significant effect on the perovskite film quality and it could enhance perovskite film light absorption, reduce crystal defects, and suppress charge recombination, resulting in enhanced device performance (from 8.9 to 15.0% for CH3NH3PbI3 and from 14.2 to 18.0% for MA0.7FA0.3PbI3-x Cl x ). Moreover, electron and hole interlayer free devices were achieved by using high-quality PbI2 crystals and the devices exhibited a high PCE of 13.6 and 10.4% for glass and flexible substrates, respectively. This is important for simplifying the perovskite solar cell fabrication process without complex interface engineering involved, especially for printed PSCs.
Efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells enabled by homogenized PCBM with enhanced electron transport

Abstract:Fullerene derivatives are extensively employed in inverted perovskite solar cells due to their excellent electron extraction capabilities. However, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) agglomerates easily in solution and exhibits a relatively low ionization barrier, increasing charge recombination losses and charge accumulation in the interface. Here, tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMDS) is introduced into the PCBM solution to induce the formation of reducing sulfur radicals through UV light irradiation, allowing for n doping of the PCBM material. The resulting modified PCBM layer exhibits enhanced conductivity and electron mobility, significantly suppressing charge recombination. As a result, the resulting devices incorporating TMDS achieve a champion efficiency of 26.10% (certified 25.39%) and 24.06% at a larger area (1.0 cm2) with negligible hysteresis. More importantly, the optimized devices retain 95% and 90% of their initial efficiency after 1090 h under damp heat testing (85 °C and 85% relative humidity) and after 1271 h under maximum power point-tracking conditions, respectively.
Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells With Efficient Mixed-Fullerene Derivative Charge Extraction Layers

Abstract:The short-circuit current density of inverted perovskite solar cells is unsatisfactory due to the intrinsic relatively low electron mobility and electrical conductivity of PC61BM. To solve this problem, a solution-processed mixed-fullerene derivative electron transporting material by mixing PC61BM with C-60 was developed to improve charge extraction capacity in fully low temperature processed devices. Incorporation of C-60 into the PC61BM layer improves the mobility from 2.15x10(-3) to 4.71x10(-3) cm(2)V(-1)s(-1) and the conductivity of electron transporting layers, thus enhancing the interfacial electron extraction capacity and reducing the electron transfer resistance. As a result, the average power conversion efficiency increases from 12.80% to 15.47% by 21% due to the significant increases in the average short-circuit current density from 19.26 to 22.08 mA.cm(-2) by 15%. Meanwhile, the optimal efficiency of 16.44% with rigid substrates and 12.93% with flexible substrates are obtained with almost no hysteresis. This work provides a novel and simple method to greatly improve the short-circuit current density and hence the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells.
Reconfiguration of interfacial energy band structure for high-performance inverted structure perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Abstract Charged defects at the surface of the organic–inorganic perovskite active layer are detrimental to solar cells due to exacerbated charge carrier recombination. Here we show that charged surface defects can be benign after passivation and further exploited for reconfiguration of interfacial energy band structure. Based on the electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged ions, Lewis-acid-featured fullerene skeleton after iodide ionization (PCBB-3N-3I) not only efficiently passivates positively charged surface defects but also assembles on top of the perovskite active layer with preferred orientation. Consequently, PCBB-3N-3I with a strong molecular electric dipole forms a dipole interlayer to reconfigure interfacial energy band structure, leading to enhanced built-in potential and charge collection. As a result, inverted structure planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells exhibit the promising power conversion efficiency of 21.1% and robust ambient stability. This work opens up a new window to boost perovskite solar cells via rational exploitation of charged defects beyond passivation.

Curing the vulnerable heterointerface via organic-inorganic hybrid hole transporting bilayers for efficient inverted perovskite solar cells

Abstract:To promote the practices of perovskite photovoltaics, it requires to develop efficient perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) standing long-time operation under the adverse environments. Herein, we demonstrate that the tailor-made conjugated polymers as conductive adhesives stabilized the originally redox-reactive heterointerface between perovskite and metal oxide, facilitating the access of efficient and stable inverted PVSCs. It was revealed that bithiophene and phenyl alternating conjugated polymers with partial glycol chains atop of the metal oxide layer has resulted in effective organic-inorganic hybrid hole transporting bilayers, which allow maintaining efficient hole extraction and transport, meanwhile preventing halide migration to directly contact with the nickel oxide (NiOx) layer. As a result, the corresponding inverted PVSCs with the organic-inorganic hole transporting bilayers have achieved an excellent power conversion efficiency of 23.22%, outperforming 20.65% of bare NiOx-based devices. Moreover, the encapsulated PVSCs with organic-inorganic bilayers exhibited the excellent photostability with 91% of the initial efficiency after 1000-h one-sun equivalent illumination in ambient conditions. Overall, this work provides new insights into stabilizing the vulnerable heterointerface for perovskite solar cells.

Design of multifunctional near-infrared organic heterojunction and double hole transport layer to improve efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Currently, the high-efficiency lead organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can only utilize a relatively small fraction of sunlight (300–800 nm) due to the limited tunability of optical bandgap, which is the key factor limiting the further improvement of the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs. Here, we report a method to blend the narrow band gap non-fullerene acceptor molecule Y18 and the wide band gap donor molecule PM6 to form a multifunctional bulk organic heterojunction active layer. To avoid the loss of voltage and fill factor caused by the compromised hole transport layer (HTL), we introduce the single-walled carbon nanotubes as a buffer layer to fabricate a double HTL. The champion device displays a PCE improvement from 20.05% to 22.82% with a relative increase of 13.81%. After a deep examination of the mechanism, organic heterojunction provides the multifunctional roles as follows: (1) providing additional harvesting to the near-infrared light ranging of 800–950 nm; (2) passivating the perovskite surface and grain boundary to reduce the defect density; (3) promoting hole extraction from perovskite to HTLs by forming cascade energy levels. Moreover, the stability of PSCs is considerably enhanced because the introduction of organic heterojunction and buffer layer design isolated the natural degradation, which enhances the tolerance towards water and oxygen. Finally, a module group is fabricated by connecting two series modules in parallel, which is served as a power source to light the diode screen. This work demonstrates a buffer layer design for fabricating organic heterojunction-perovskite integrated solar cells to expand the near-infrared response, which provides a novel approach for designing integrated solar cells in the future.

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite CsPbI2Br has advantages of excellent thermal stability and reasonable bandgap, which make it suitable for top layer of tandem solar cells. Nevertheless, solution-processed all-inorganic perovskites generally suffer from high-density defects as well as significant tensile strain near underlayer/perovskite interface, both leading to compromised device efficiency and stability. In this work, the defect density as well as interfacial tensile strain in inverted CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) is remarkably reduced by using a bilayer underlayer composed of dopant-free 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis(N,N-dip-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9′-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) and copper phthalocyanine 3,4′,4″,4′″-tetrasulfonated acid tetrasodium salt (TS-CuPc) nanoparticles. As compared to control devices with pristine Spiro-OMeTAD, devices based on Spiro-OMeTAD/TS-CuPc exhibit remarkably improved photovoltaic performance and enhanced thermal/humidity stability due to the better perovskite crystallization, improved interfacial passivation, and hole-collection as well as efficient interfacial strain release. As a result, a champion efficiency of 14.85% can be achieved, which is approaching to the best reported for dopant-free and inverted all-inorganic PeSCs. The work thus provides an efficient strategy to simultaneously regulate the defects density and strain issue related to inorganic perovskites.

Abstract:In the increasingly rapid development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), all-inorganic PSCs, especially Br-rich all-inorganic PSCs, not only inherit the advantages of an adjustable bandgap, and excellent light absorption, but also has superior stability. To find a simple-process and low-cost way to increase perovskite performance, we try to adjust the conduction band of CsPbIBr2 with the help of dipoles induced by PEI incorporating. Furthermore, we use carbon as the negative electrode to abandon the noble metal and hole transport layer (HTL). Finally, the solar cells with the structure of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/TiO2/CsPbIBr2/Carbon are prepared. The ${V} _{textit {oc}}$ and FF of the carbon-based, HTL-free and all-inorganic PSCs with polyethyleneimine (PEI) incorporating have an obvious improvement, and the champion device can get an efficiency of 7.5% with peak ${V} _{textit {oc}}$ of 1.2 V and maximum FF of 65%, which is far beyond the one without PEI incorporating. Our work hopes to give an effective method to produce a simple, cost-effective design for PSCs.

Abstract:CsPbI3 based all inorganic perovskite solar cells with no electron transport layer structure exhibit asymmetric effects due to their unique device structure. By optimizing different device input parameters, the output performance power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the as‐designed perovskite solar cell can reach up to 18.88%, maintaining high performance while saving actual production costs. Cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) has attracted a great deal of attention as an absorption layer material for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high stability and suitable band gap (1.72 eV). In response to the problems of defect‐induced nonradiative compounding and voltage loss caused by the common perovskite layer, the common strategies of interfacial engineering, altering crystal equivalence, and other modifications involve more complex processes and higher fabrication costs. In order to simplify the process and save costs, this work has omitted the electron transport layer (ETL), while still maintaining a high power conversion efficiency (PCE). This work has simulated PSCs with CsPbI3 (electron transport layer free) and have matched Cu2O as the most suitable hole transport layer (HTL) material. By simulating and optimizing the thickness and defect density of perovskite absorption layer and the defect density of interface defect layer (IDL1, IDL2), and determining the most suitable operating temperature, the PCE of the device can reach 18.8%, which is consistent with the experimental data. The asymmetric effect of the interface defect layer obtained in this work is similar to previous research reports. This research provides an economical solution for high‐performance inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:During the past several years, methylammonium lead halide perovskites have been widely investigated as light absorbers for thin-film photovoltaic cells. Among the various device architectures, the inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells have attracted special attention for their relatively simple fabrication and high efficiencies. Although promising efficiencies have been obtained in the inverted planar geometry based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS) as the hole transport material (HTM), the hydrophilicity of the PEDOT:PSS is a critical factor for long-term stability. In this paper, a CuOx hole transport layer from a facile solution-processed method was introduced into the inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. After the optimization of the devices, a champion PCE of 17.1% was obtained with an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.99 V, a short-circuit current (J(sc)) of 23.2 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 74.4%. Furthermore, the unencapsulated device cooperating with the CuOx film exhibited superior performance in the stability test, compared to the device involving the PEDOT:PSS layer, indicating that CuOx could be a promising HTM for replacing PEDOT:PSS in inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The development of ZnO as electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is actually slow due to the poor chemical compatibility in interface between ZnO and organic-inorganic perovskite. However, this weakness of ZnO does not affect the realization of the potential in all-inorganic PSCs. In this manuscript, all-inorganic CsPbI 2 Br PS Cs based on ZnO has been successfully realized and delivered an outstanding power efficiency conversion of 14.78%. Compared to SnO 2 -based PSCs, the more suitable band alignment between ZnO ETL and perovskite offered larger built-in potential, resulting in superior electron extraction capability and effective interfacial recombination suppression.
