Abstract:Polycrystalline Ni samples of three purities (99.967%, 99.5% and 99.7%) have been deformed at room temperature by high pressure torsion to an ultra-high strain of epsilon(nu M)=100. The deformation microstructure, strength and the thermal behavior have been examined. It is observed that the three samples at this strain are characterized by nanostructures consisting of a high fraction of high angle boundaries around 70%. The thermal stability was evaluated through the recrystallization temperature corresponding to 50% softening during isochronal annealing. The strength and thenual stability show a typical trade-off relationship, i.e. strengthening at an expense of thermal stability. The addition of a small amount of Fe (0.4%) and Ti (0.14%) into Ni substantially reduced the saturation boundary spacing from 117 nm to 82 nm and 42 nm respectively, and in turn the saturation strength was enhanced to 1166 MPa and 1666 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the trade-off relationship between strength and stability was broken. This study points to the possibility of fabricating strong and stable nanostructured metals by light alloying.
