Abstract:An elliptical core tellurite microstructured optical fiber with high birefringence was demonstrated and the chromatic dispersion of the two orthogonal modes in this fiber was experimentally characterized by a white light spectral interferometric technique over a wide spectral range. A series of spectral interferograms as a function of the optical path difference were recorded in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The birefringence dependence of the wavelength in the fiber was determined by interferograms. The measured and calculated dispersion matched well within the whole spectrum range under test.

Abstract:We report multicolor upconversion emissions including the blue-violet, green, and red lights in a Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite glass photonic microwire between two silica fiber tapers. A silica fiber is tapered until its evanescent field is exposed and then angled-cleaved at the tapered center to divide the tapered fibers into two parts. A tellurite glass is melted by a gas flame to cluster into a sphere at the tip of one tapered fiber. The other angled-cleaved tapered fiber is blended into the melted tellurite glass. When the tellurite glass is melted, the two silica fiber tapers are simultaneously moving outwards to draw the tellurite glass into a microwire in between. The advantage of angled-cleaving on fiber tapers is to avoid cavity resonances in high index photonic microwire. Thus, the broadband white light can be transmitted between silica fibers and a special optical property like high intensity upconversion emission can be achieved. A cw 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser light is launched into the Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite microwire through a silica fiber taper to generate the multicolor upconversion emissions, including the blue-violet, green, and red lights, simultaneously. Abstract:We propose two mid-infrared photonic crystal fibers with an elliptical As2S3 core and a dual-cladding structure with high birefringence and high nonlinearity. The cladding filling material is silica and the core material is As2S3. The full vector finite-element method is used to study the birefringence, and nonlinear coefficient of the structure in the 3–5 μm band. The Simulation results show that the birefringence of the two structures can reach a maximum of 0.2169, and the nonlinear coefficient can reach a maximum of 3763.42 W−1/km. From these characteristics, it is concluded that the proposed structure will be ideal for mid-infrared fiber sensing, precision optics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We have investigated the dispersion and birefringence of an irregularly microstructured fiber with an elliptic silica core and irregular airholes. The polarization-dependent output power through the fiber reveals two well-defined principal-axis modes despite the irregularity of airholes. The dispersion of the fiber is measured in the range of 680 to 1000 nm using the Mach-Zehnder interferometric technique with sub-10 fs laser pulses, which yield two zero dispersion wavelengths at 683 and 740 nm for the two principal modes, respectively. The birefringence measured using the wavelength scanning method is about 0.0055 at 800 nm. It is also demonstrated that this irregularly microstructured fiber with high birefringence and short zero dispersion wavelength is useful for the one-octave-spanning supercontinuum generation suitable for an f-2f interferometric system.

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) semiconductor core optical fibers with silicate glass cladding were drawn by the molten core method. The as-drawn precursor fiber has a large core diameter of about 123 µm, which was found to be polycrystalline. What is more, a Bridgman-type fiber postprocessing technique was constructed and used for the first time to anneal the polycrystalline Te semiconductor core optical fibers. The Te core in precursor fiber was melted and recrystallized to single crystal Te with c-axis orientation parallel to fiber axis, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, single crystal X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectra, and transmission electron microscope measurement results. Enhanced conductivities were observed in single crystal Te semiconductor core optical fibers under illuminated and stress states, respectively. This work demonstrates that the Bridgman-type fiber postprocessing technique could be an effective way to fabricate single crystal semiconductor core optical fibers with large core diameters (∼ 100 µm) and long lengths (a few centimeters).

Abstract:Twin core erbium-doped fiber is fabricated using a combination of MCVD, solution doping and post processing technique. This paper mainly study the birefringence of twin-core Erbium doped fiber including geometrical and stress birefringence. First we analysis the mode distribution of twin core fiber and geometrical birefringence by supercell lattice orthogonal function method using the structure parameters measured. Then the geometrical birefringence also calculated from the couple theory. The calculated result showed that two elliptical cores would have higher geometrical bireffingence than two circular cores. Generally the Er-doped fiber is high Germanium doped to keep high Numerical Aperture (NA), which cause high thermal expansion coefficient difference between the core and the cladding, and the stress birefringence is anisotropic. According the distribution of stress field, we calculated the stress birefringence in the area of assembling of light power, which approximate to 10(-4). The investigation proved that twin core Erbium doped fiber has high birefringence and good polarization maintaining characteristics.

Abstract:A novel highly birefringent Bragg fiber with a fiber core of 2-dimension (2D) elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure is proposed. Elliptical air holes axe introduced into the fiber core to form a normal 2D photonic crystal structure with a hole pitch (center-to-center distance between the air holes) much smaller that the operation wavelength of the Bragg fiber. The elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure acts as an anisotropic medium with different effective indices for transmission light of differently polarization, which inevitably results to high birefringence (up to the order of magnitude of 0.01) of the Bragg fiber. The proposed Bragg fiber possesses different band-gaps for differently polarized mode. Besides the periodic alternating layers of high/low refractive indices, the bandwidth of the band-gap is also dependent on the effective index of the fiber core, which can be controlled by the area of the elliptical air holes.

Abstract:A multicore chalcogenide–tellurite hybrid optical fiber is designed and fabricated with three cores arranged in a trigonal array. Cores with high refractive index are made of chalcogenide glass (Ge15Ga3Sb13S69), and the background with low refractive index is made of 76.5TeO2–6Bi2O3–11.5Li2O–6ZnO (mol%, TZLB). The diameters of three cores are ∼3.12, 3.07 and 2.96μm, and the calculated zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) are ∼2.361, 2.298 and 2.193 μm, respectively. Supercontinuum (SC) generation in each core is investigated by pumping it with the wavelengths of ∼2200 and 2400nm from an optical parametric oscillator.

Abstract:We analyzed light confinement in circular step-index cores of tellurite and silica fibers through numerical calculations and also examined crosstalk between the fundamental modes of cores in multicore fibers. Our analysis showed that tellurite fibers have a pixel density about 2.2 times higher and a brightness about 1.4 times brighter than silica fibers. As a result, tellurite multicore image fibers have the potential to provide improved resolution and brightness for near-infrared image transportation compared with silica fibers.

Abstract:We have prepared a well-structured tellurium chalcogenide (ChG) fiber with a specialized double cladding structure by an improved extrusion method, and experimentally demonstrated an ultra-flat mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) generation in such a fiber. The step-index fiber had an optical loss of <1 dB/m in a range from 7.4 to 9.7 μm with a minimum loss of 0.69 dB/m at 7.87 μm. Simulation showed that an all-normal dispersion profile can be realized in this double cladding tellurium fiber. An ultra-flat MIR SC spectrum (~3.2-12.1μm at -10 dB, ~2-14 μm at -30 dB) was generated from a 22-cm long fiber pumped with a femtosecond laser at 5 μm (~150 fs, 1 kHz). Then the degree of coherence was calculated out based on a simulation, showing that a high coherent MIR SC (from 2.9 to 13.1 μm) can be generated in this double-cladding tellurium fiber.

Abstract:We report a polarization-maintaining fiber in which the birefringence is due to artificially introduced anisotropy in the core material. The beat length was measured by direct observation at three different wavelengths, giving a shortest result of 85 microm at a wavelength of 543 nm. The measured phase-index birefringence is about one third of that expected, which is explained by diffusion between the core layers, which are each less than 200 nm thick. By taking account of this diffusion, we can accurately model the experimental beat length and differential group delay over a wide wavelength range.

Abstract:Multiple Raman peak properties in a 130 m tellurite fiber are demonstrated in this paper. When the tellurite fiber is pumped by a nanosecond laser at similar to 1545 nm, a second-order Raman shift with multiple Raman peaks is observed. Especially for the first-order Raman shift, six obvious Raman peaks are observed. When the tellurite fiber is pumped by a picosecond laser at similar to 1064 nm, a second-order Raman shift with only dual Raman peaks is obtained. Abstract:We report on the multiple midinfrared soliton generation based on a birefringent tellurite microstructured optical fiber pumped in the deep anomalous dispersion regime at 2 mu m. The wavelengths of the solitons can be continuously shifted to the longer wavelength region by the Raman-induced frequency shift effect. The central wavelength of the first soliton polarized parallel to the fast axis can be tuned as wide as 680 nm from 2050 to 2730 nm by adjusting the pump power. After the pump polarization is operated at 45 degrees to the fast axis, two soliton pairs can be generated by the optical trapping effect.
