Abstract:Abstract A numerical analysis of a hexagonal PCF structure with four circular air hole rings around the core has been presented in this paper. By utilizing a full vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers, propagation properties such as birefringence, chromatic dispersion and confinement losses are numericaly evaluated for the proposed PCF structure. Specifically, birefringence of 2.018 × 10 –2 , nonlinear coefficients of 40.682 W −1 km −1 , negative chromatic dispersion of − 47.72 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm and − 21 to − 105 ps/km.nm at the telecommunication band of C-U have been reported.

Abstract:We propose two mid-infrared photonic crystal fibers with an elliptical As2S3 core and a dual-cladding structure with high birefringence and high nonlinearity. The cladding filling material is silica and the core material is As2S3. The full vector finite-element method is used to study the birefringence, and nonlinear coefficient of the structure in the 3–5 μm band. The Simulation results show that the birefringence of the two structures can reach a maximum of 0.2169, and the nonlinear coefficient can reach a maximum of 3763.42 W−1/km. From these characteristics, it is concluded that the proposed structure will be ideal for mid-infrared fiber sensing, precision optics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:This study introduces a Ge20Sb15Se65 chalcogenide-glass-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with high birefringence and nonlinearity and ultra-low confinement loss, in which two elliptical air holes are added in the core. The propagation properties of the proposed PCF are investigated in mid-infrared range (3.0–5.0 μm) using the finite element method (FEM). Simulation results indicate that optimizing structural parameters can increase the birefringence and nonlinear coefficient to a maximum of 3.16×10−1 and 5937 W-1km-1 (in y-polarization mode), respectively, a significantly low confinement loss reach 10-14 dB/m at 3.0μm wavelength, there can obtain one zero dispersion wavelength in the study band, and the designed structure can be fabricated using available technology. The designed PCF will have promising application in mid-infrared fiber fields, optical communication, super-continuum generation, precision, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Abstract A photonic crystal fiber in square lattice architecture is numerically investigated and proposed for broadband dispersion compensation in optical transmission system. Simulation results reveal that it is possible to obtain an ultra-high negative dispersion of about −571.7 to −1889.7 (ps/nm.km) in the wavelength range of 1340 nm to 1640 nm. Experimentally it is demonstrated that the design fiber covers a high birefringence of order 4.74×10 ‒3 at the wavelength of 1550 nm. Here, numerical investigation of guiding properties and geometrical properties of the proposed PCF are conducted using the finite element method (FEM) with perfectly match layers. Moreover, it is established more firmly that the proposed fiber successfully compensates the chromatic dispersion of standard single mode in entire band of interest. Our result is attractive due to successfully achieve ultra-high negative dispersion that is more promisor than the prior best results.

Abstract:A novel high birefringence photonic crystal fiber (PCF) was proposed, which consists of hexagonal inner ring and octagonal outer ring. A full vector finite element was applied to investigate the mode birefringence and chromatic dispersion. It has been demonstrated from the calculated results that high birefringence to the order of 0.001 can be achieved and ultra-flattened dispersion of -0.8 similar to+ 0.2 ps/(km.nm) is obtained in 1.5 to 1.65 mu m wavelength range.

Abstract:A kind of high birefringence photonic crystal fiber(PCF)was proposed.Enlarging two of the central air holes,the fiber has twofold symmetry and appears the high birefringence.By squeezing the air hole lattice,the modal birefringence of such a PCF can be further enhanced.The phase and group birefringence of the fundamental mode in such a PCF are studied by using a full-vector finite-element method,and the curves showing the relation between the birefringence of this PCF and the wavelength of the input light are given.The high modal birefringence with magnitude of order of 10-3 has been obtained.The phase modal birefringence of such a PCF with the parameters calculated can reach 5.0×10-3 at 1 550 nm and even higher at longer wavelength.

Abstract:We propose a novel polarization-maintaining index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF). It is composed of a solid silica core and a cladding with squeezed-hexagonal-lattice elliptical air holes. Using a full-vector finite-element method, we study the modal birefringence of the fundamental modes in such PCFs. Numerical result shows that very high modal birefringence with a magnitude of the order of 10(-2) around 1550 nm has been obtained. Furthermore, large normal dispersion appears over a wide range of wavelengths in both orthogonal polarizations. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We investigate the characteristics of optical modes in a new designed hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with large modal separation. The large effective refractive index difference between the adjacent second-order vector modes can be maintained higher than 0.001 within the wavelength range from 1 to 2 μm. The maximum value can arrive 0.01199 between HE21 and TM01 mode at 2 μm. The fundamental mode of the proposed PCF has flat dispersion in a wide spectral range, which can be applied on wideband supercontinuum generation. The influence on the characteristics by the PCF structure has also been investigated. The increase of the size of the central air hole and the duty cycle affects the flatness of the dispersion curve to some extent. Our simulated results could provide an optimized fiber structure for the experimental study on stable transmission of vector modes.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel photonic crystal fibre (PCF) with high phase birefringence and very low group birefringence. It is composed of a solid silica core and a cladding with helix-pattern air holes. Using a full-vector finite-element method, we study the phase and group modal birefringence of such PCF at various air-hole sizes, pitches and wavelengths. Owing to this innovative structure of air holes, a high phase to group modal birefringence rate is obtained. Its phase modal birefringence is as large as 10−4 magnitude; however, the group modal birefringence of this PCF is at 10−7–10−6. The phase birefringence is 2 orders of magnitude larger than group birefringence over a broad wavelength span, which means that the light with different polarization and effective index has almost a same group velocity. As a result, the group modal birefringence that closely relates to the polarization modal dispersion is negligible.

Abstract:Through introducing three sizes of holes in cladding, highly birefringent two-mode photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are proposed. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is applied in the calculation of the transverse electric field vector distributions of the two modes, their effective indices, modal birefringence, chromatic dispersion, and confinement losses. The defect holes near the core region are deliberately designed to obtain high birefringence. Furthermore, the structural parameters are carefully selected to flatten chromatic dispersion curve and reduce confinement losses.

Abstract:In this paper, the detailed strain characteristics of a selective-filling birefringent photonic crystal fiber (SF-PCF) were analyzed theoretically. The SF-PCF was achieved by selectively filling two symmetrical air holes around the fiber core of a PCF with a high index liquid. The group birefringence and phase birefringence presented unique characteristics different from the traditional index-guiding birefringence fiber. Hence, the transmission and sensing characteristics of the Sagnac interferometer based on the SF-PCF presented diversity and high sensitivity. Finally, the highest strain sensitivity of -9.56 pm/mu epsilon was theoretically achieved.

Abstract:We present a modified method to design photonic crystal fibers with flattened dispersion characteristics. By replacing the circular air-holes of the first central ring with elliptic air-holes, we observe a more flattened dispersion curve. Plane-wave expansion (PWE) method is used to analyze the dispersion property in a high-index core PCF. The simulation results are presented, and ultra-low and ultra-flattened dispersion curves over wide wavelength range are demonstrated.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a bunch of air holes enclosing the silica core field has momentous and compelling attributes when compared with the ordinary single-mode fibers. In this work, both the birefringence and dispersion properties of a polarization-maintaining chalcogenide (ChG) photonic crystal fiber are numerically investigated by means of the finite element method. Through simulation, it is found that the birefringence of the proposed \({\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}}_{11.5}{\mathrm{A}\mathrm{s}}_{24}{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{e}}_{64.5}\) PCF can reach as high as \(0.03\) when compared with the conventional fiber that has merely \(5\times {10}^{-4}\) for wavelengths in the 2–10 \(\upmu \mathrm{m}\) range. The PCF is designed with zero-dispersion wavelengths for x- and y-polarized modes in the 2–10 \(\upmu \mathrm{m}\) range. It is also observed that over the entire MIR wavelength range, the GVD remains positive and has a maximum value of 30,000 ps2/nm-km. Hence, the proposed \({\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}}_{11.5}{\mathrm{A}\mathrm{s}}_{24}{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{e}}_{64.5}\) PCF plays the dual role of acting as a very good polarization-maintaining fiber due to its very high birefringence and an excellent dispersion-compensating fiber due to its large positive GVD. This \({\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}}_{11.5}{\mathrm{A}\mathrm{s}}_{24}{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{e}}_{64.5}\) PCF serves as a very good candidate for ultra-broadband high bit-rate transmission. Supercontinuum generation is another important application of PCF. Supercontinuum generation is a generation of coherent and broadband light. SC generation in PCFs has several applications in optical coherence tomography (OCT), optical frequency metrology (OFM), pulse compression, and design of ultrafast femtosecond laser pulses.

Abstract:This article proposes a novel Si 3 N 4 -based five-ring hexa-circular photonic crystal fiber (PCF) that shows a remarkably high nonlinear coefficient (NLC) and birefringence (Br). Several distinctive optical features, including birefringence, nonlinearity, effective area, numerical aperture, confinement loss, dispersion, etc., are investigated utilizing the COMSOL Software. The simulation analysis demonstrates that a zero-crossing dispersion for Y- polarization and an extremely high Br and NLC of 0.22 and 2687.51 are reached at the wavelength of . The proposed PCF, having extremely high Br and NLC properties, can be useful for prospective future applications in the areas of supercontinuum generation, nonlinear optics, polarization-maintaining, and so on.

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel hexagonal lattice porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibiting high birefringence, low loss, and near-zero flattened dispersion in the terahertz regime. The core design incorporates asymmetric rectangular and triangular air holes to achieve enhanced birefringence performance. The background material, TOPAS, is carefully selected to minimize dispersion and transmission losses. Furthermore, by employing the finite element method, the guiding properties of the proposed PCF are comprehensively investigated. Our simulation results reveal a near-zero flattened dispersion value of "±0.2ps∙THz^-1∙cm^-1" within a broad frequency range of "0.8-1.6THz" , accompanied by an impressive birefringence value of "0.072" . Additionally, the PCF demonstrates outstanding characteristics in terms of confinement loss, effective material loss, effective mode area, core power fraction, and bending loss. Considering its exceptional attributes, the proposed PCF holds significant promise for polarization-maintaining applications and terahertz communication systems.
