Abstract:We propose two mid-infrared photonic crystal fibers with an elliptical As2S3 core and a dual-cladding structure with high birefringence and high nonlinearity. The cladding filling material is silica and the core material is As2S3. The full vector finite-element method is used to study the birefringence, and nonlinear coefficient of the structure in the 3–5 μm band. The Simulation results show that the birefringence of the two structures can reach a maximum of 0.2169, and the nonlinear coefficient can reach a maximum of 3763.42 W−1/km. From these characteristics, it is concluded that the proposed structure will be ideal for mid-infrared fiber sensing, precision optics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Abstract A numerical analysis of a hexagonal PCF structure with four circular air hole rings around the core has been presented in this paper. By utilizing a full vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers, propagation properties such as birefringence, chromatic dispersion and confinement losses are numericaly evaluated for the proposed PCF structure. Specifically, birefringence of 2.018 × 10 –2 , nonlinear coefficients of 40.682 W −1 km −1 , negative chromatic dispersion of − 47.72 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm and − 21 to − 105 ps/km.nm at the telecommunication band of C-U have been reported.

Abstract:A High birefringence microstructure fiber with four big elliptical air holes is investigated by using the finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method. Based on the numerical simulations, the influence of the air-hole size and pitch upon the mode birefringence is analyzed. Abstract:Based on a full-vector model, a theoretical study on a kind of high birefringence photonic crystal fibre is presented. Due to introducing air holes of two different sizes into the cladding, twofold rotational symmetry was obtained. We demonstrate the possibility of achieving high birefringence that is at least one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional polarization-maintaining fibres. The dependences of modal birefringence, modal field and differential group delay on the structure parameter of the fibres are discussed in detail. The numerical results are in very good agreement with the experimental results in the literature.

Abstract:The technique of separation of variables, combined with the boundary-value method, is employed in an examination of the scattering features of two parallel, nonoverlapping, cladded bianisotropic uniaxial chiral fibers. Parameter studies are performed that show the influences of anisotropic chirality, nonreciprocity, and geometrical size of the chiral fibers on the Mueller scattering matrix and the extinction cross section of far-zone fields. Some unique phenomena are found and discussed.

Abstract:We present a new observation of photorefractive (PR) effects in bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal (LC) materials, where two kinds of optical-induced gratings are demonstrated and compared in pure and surface-doped BCN systems. The experimental results showed that these two kinds of gratings exhibit distinctive different polarization-dependent and angular-dependent behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, we supplied the pure and surface-doped rodlike LC systems for comparison, which revealed that V shape molecular structure of BCN can produce charge carrier more efficiently than rodlike molecular structure does. Thus BCN materials can offer an exciting potential for optical information processing.

Abstract:High birefringence induced by elliptical air hole photonic crystal fibers (EHPCFs) is analyzed numerically using the finite-element method. Statistical correlations between the birefringence and the various parameters are obtained. We found that the complex elliptical air hole is better than that of a circular one to obtain high birefringence in photonic crystal fibers. Our suggested structures can considerably enhance the birefringence in EHPCFs and show that the birefringence can be as high as 1.1294 x 10(-2), which is higher than the birefringence obtained from conventional step-index fiber (5 x 10(-4)), circular air holes PCF (3.7 x 10(-3)), and elliptical hollow PCF (2.35 x 10(-3)).

Abstract:Using a full-vector model,we investigate the properties of a kind of high biref ringence index guiding photonic crystal fibers.We concentrate on the polarizatio n properties including linear polarization of fundamental modal field,modal bire fringence and polarization mode dispersion.Two-fold rotational symmetry was int roduced into the fiber structure by creating a regular array of air hole of t wo different sizes disposed about a pure silica core.The degeneracy of two ortho normal polarized-modes of the fundamental mode was removed.This creates a possi bility to attain a modal birefringence of at least one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional high birefringence fibers.A beat length of 0.4067mm i s obtained at the wavelength 1540nm.We can obtain much higher birefringence and larger difference of group time delay by choosing different structure parameter of fibers.The numerical results are in very good agreement with the results of e xperiment.

Abstract:A novel highly birefringent Bragg fiber with a fiber core of 2-dimension (2D) elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure is proposed. Elliptical air holes axe introduced into the fiber core to form a normal 2D photonic crystal structure with a hole pitch (center-to-center distance between the air holes) much smaller that the operation wavelength of the Bragg fiber. The elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure acts as an anisotropic medium with different effective indices for transmission light of differently polarization, which inevitably results to high birefringence (up to the order of magnitude of 0.01) of the Bragg fiber. The proposed Bragg fiber possesses different band-gaps for differently polarized mode. Besides the periodic alternating layers of high/low refractive indices, the bandwidth of the band-gap is also dependent on the effective index of the fiber core, which can be controlled by the area of the elliptical air holes.

Abstract:We report on the birefringence of photonic crystal fibers as functions of fiber structure parameters and incident wavelength. It is found that the sign of the fiber birefringence can be changed by controlling the incident wavelength. The guided-mode coupling properties of the dual-core photonic crystal fibers are highly engineerable by tailoring the birefringence. New types of polarization splitters based on the photonic crystal fibers are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, the detailed strain characteristics of a selective-filling birefringent photonic crystal fiber (SF-PCF) were analyzed theoretically. The SF-PCF was achieved by selectively filling two symmetrical air holes around the fiber core of a PCF with a high index liquid. The group birefringence and phase birefringence presented unique characteristics different from the traditional index-guiding birefringence fiber. Hence, the transmission and sensing characteristics of the Sagnac interferometer based on the SF-PCF presented diversity and high sensitivity. Finally, the highest strain sensitivity of -9.56 pm/mu epsilon was theoretically achieved.

Abstract:The modal and group birefringence of a hybrid photonic crsystal fiber (Hybird-PCF) and their responses to strain and temperature are studied theoretically and experimentally. The birefringence properties of a section of Hybrid-PCF manufactured by University of Bath were measured by using a Sagnac interferometer. The group birefringence, strain and temperature responsivities of modal birefringence of this Hybrid-PCF were measured to be similar to 2.5*10(-4), 4.39*10-4 (epsilon(-1)) and -1.05*10(-7) (degrees C-1) respectively. The birefringence properties of Hybrid-PCF can be adjusted by changing the molar concentration and diameter of its Ge-doped regions.

Abstract:Based on an approximate model for acoustic waves in a silica rod with circular cross section, we theoretically investigated the dispersion properties of the hybrid acoustical modes and the acousto-optical interactions in the small core photonic crystal fiber. The calculation result shows that the dual-peaked Brillouin scattering gain coefficient spectrum is caused by the mode coupling of the hybrid acoustical modes in the small fiber core. Together with the dispersion properties of the acoustical modes, the influence of the pump wavelength and temperature on the dual-peaked Brillouin scattering gain coefficient spectrum are also calculated via their influences on the acoustic wave vector and material parameters. Our theoretical results agree with the experimental results well. And we also discuss the limit of application of this model through comparing the theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:We propose a high birefringence and low loss index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF) using the complex unit cells in cladding by the finite-element method. Results show that the birefringence and confinement loss in such PCF fiber is determined not only by the whole cladding asymmetry but also the shape of the PCF core. The maximal modal birefringence and lowest confinement loss of our proposed structures at the excitation wavelength of λ=1550nm can be achieved at 8.7×10−3 and 5.27×10−5dB/km, respectively.

Abstract:The modal and group birefringence of a hybrid photonic crystal fiber (hybrid PCF) and the sensitivities of modal birefringence of hybrid PCF to strain and temperature are investigated. The hybrid PCF composes of air-holes and Ge-doped silica rods surrounding a silica core region and light is confined to the core by hybrid index-guiding and photonic bandgap effects. A theoretical model was established and used to calculate these birefringence properties as functions of Ge concentration and diameter of the Ge-doped region. In experiments, the birefringence properties of a hybrid PCF made by University of Bath were measured by using a Sagnac interferometer. The experimental results show that the sensitivities of fringe minimum of this Sagnac interferometer to strain and temperature, at the wavelength of 1550 nm, were 2.01 nm/m epsilon and = 0.334 nm/degrees C, respectively, which agree well with the theoretical predictions. The model may be used to design hybrid PCFs with desired birefringence properties.

Abstract:Photonic band-gap (PBG) materials are periodic dielectric crystals that exhibit a photonic band-gap analogous to the electronic band-gap present in semiconductors. Their fabrication, however, requires extremely high resolution and is very costly. Due to the high expense in experimental fabrication, accurate modeling and prediction of a novel PBG structure characteristics are highly desirable. This paper presents an investigation on the effects of dielectric material properties and structures on the photonic band characteristics by using numerical simulation approaches.
Highly Birefringent Elliptical-Hole Photonic Crystal Fibers With Double Defect

Abstract:A novel elliptical-hole photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with double defect is theoretically investigated, and its high birefringence [including both the phase-index birefringence (PIB) and the group-index birefringence (GIB)] is demonstrated, which can reach an order of 10 -2 Such a PCF can especially have a very high PIB, with a negligible GIB in a small band of normalized frequencies. The PIB of this PCF is much higher than that of the circular-hole PCF with double defect, under comparable parameters. Compared with the elliptical-hole PCF with single defect, the present PCF possesses the advantages of both a higher PIB and a larger modal area for modest ellipticities; thus, it is more suitable in linear applications, as well as in fabrication. Moreover, a novel single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) PCF with a broad wavelength band is proposed and demonstrated. In addition, a new approach in designing broadband SPSM PCFs is suggested.

Abstract:For the purpose of satisfying the demands of polarization-maintaining fibers for fiber optic gyroscopes, this article proposes a semicircular cladding birefringent hollow-core anti-resonant fiber. The influence of structural parameters on the birefringence, loss, and bending loss of the fiber is studied. The simulation results demonstrate that at 1550 nm, the ultimate loss of the fundamental mode of x and y polarization is 1.76 dB/m and 0.93 dB/m, respectively. The birefringence can reach 1 × 10−4, and the wavelength range of birefringence greater than 10−4 can reach 60 nm. This indicates that it has excellent bending properties. The proposed optical fiber has excellent performance in polarization maintenance and can supply ideas for the research of high-precision fiber optic gyroscopes and other optical devices.

Abstract:An analytical method for band structure calculations of photonic crystal fibers with liquid crystal infiltrations is presented. The scalar eigenvalue equation is extended to treat both isotropic and anisotropic materials by introducing a coefficient to describe the index contrast between the extraordinary and ordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal. The simple model provides a fast insight into bandgap formation in photonic crystal fibers filled with anisotropic material such as liquid crystal, which would be useful to aid the design based on such fibers.
