Abstract:We demonstrate a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber by utilizing the asymmetric core design. Based on spectral measurements of the polarization mode interfering, we estimate that the fiber has a beat length of about 0.33 mm at 1545 nm.

Abstract:We propose a design for a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF), with a quasi-elliptical core region stacked by modified periodic capillary tubes. Abstract:We propose two mid-infrared photonic crystal fibers with an elliptical As2S3 core and a dual-cladding structure with high birefringence and high nonlinearity. The cladding filling material is silica and the core material is As2S3. The full vector finite-element method is used to study the birefringence, and nonlinear coefficient of the structure in the 3–5 μm band. The Simulation results show that the birefringence of the two structures can reach a maximum of 0.2169, and the nonlinear coefficient can reach a maximum of 3763.42 W−1/km. From these characteristics, it is concluded that the proposed structure will be ideal for mid-infrared fiber sensing, precision optics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:Abstract A numerical analysis of a hexagonal PCF structure with four circular air hole rings around the core has been presented in this paper. By utilizing a full vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers, propagation properties such as birefringence, chromatic dispersion and confinement losses are numericaly evaluated for the proposed PCF structure. Specifically, birefringence of 2.018 × 10 –2 , nonlinear coefficients of 40.682 W −1 km −1 , negative chromatic dispersion of − 47.72 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm and − 21 to − 105 ps/km.nm at the telecommunication band of C-U have been reported.

Abstract:Abstract A photonic crystal fiber in square lattice architecture is numerically investigated and proposed for broadband dispersion compensation in optical transmission system. Simulation results reveal that it is possible to obtain an ultra-high negative dispersion of about −571.7 to −1889.7 (ps/nm.km) in the wavelength range of 1340 nm to 1640 nm. Experimentally it is demonstrated that the design fiber covers a high birefringence of order 4.74×10 ‒3 at the wavelength of 1550 nm. Here, numerical investigation of guiding properties and geometrical properties of the proposed PCF are conducted using the finite element method (FEM) with perfectly match layers. Moreover, it is established more firmly that the proposed fiber successfully compensates the chromatic dispersion of standard single mode in entire band of interest. Our result is attractive due to successfully achieve ultra-high negative dispersion that is more promisor than the prior best results.

Abstract:We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed photonic crystal fiber by using a vectorial finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer. By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of 20,186 ps(nmkm) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 103 at the wavelength of 1.55 m in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of 8,067 ps(nmkm) and a high birefringence of 1.0 103 at the wavelength of 1.87 m in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.

Abstract:A novel highly birefringent Bragg fiber with a fiber core of 2-dimension (2D) elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure is proposed. Elliptical air holes axe introduced into the fiber core to form a normal 2D photonic crystal structure with a hole pitch (center-to-center distance between the air holes) much smaller that the operation wavelength of the Bragg fiber. The elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure acts as an anisotropic medium with different effective indices for transmission light of differently polarization, which inevitably results to high birefringence (up to the order of magnitude of 0.01) of the Bragg fiber. The proposed Bragg fiber possesses different band-gaps for differently polarized mode. Besides the periodic alternating layers of high/low refractive indices, the bandwidth of the band-gap is also dependent on the effective index of the fiber core, which can be controlled by the area of the elliptical air holes.

Abstract:We report a polarization-maintaining fiber in which the birefringence is due to artificially introduced anisotropy in the core material. The beat length was measured by direct observation at three different wavelengths, giving a shortest result of 85 microm at a wavelength of 543 nm. The measured phase-index birefringence is about one third of that expected, which is explained by diffusion between the core layers, which are each less than 200 nm thick. By taking account of this diffusion, we can accurately model the experimental beat length and differential group delay over a wide wavelength range.

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel hexagonal lattice porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibiting high birefringence, low loss, and near-zero flattened dispersion in the terahertz regime. The core design incorporates asymmetric rectangular and triangular air holes to achieve enhanced birefringence performance. The background material, TOPAS, is carefully selected to minimize dispersion and transmission losses. Furthermore, by employing the finite element method, the guiding properties of the proposed PCF are comprehensively investigated. Our simulation results reveal a near-zero flattened dispersion value of "±0.2ps∙THz^-1∙cm^-1" within a broad frequency range of "0.8-1.6THz" , accompanied by an impressive birefringence value of "0.072" . Additionally, the PCF demonstrates outstanding characteristics in terms of confinement loss, effective material loss, effective mode area, core power fraction, and bending loss. Considering its exceptional attributes, the proposed PCF holds significant promise for polarization-maintaining applications and terahertz communication systems.

Abstract:Using a full-vector model,we investigate the properties of a kind of high biref ringence index guiding photonic crystal fibers.We concentrate on the polarizatio n properties including linear polarization of fundamental modal field,modal bire fringence and polarization mode dispersion.Two-fold rotational symmetry was int roduced into the fiber structure by creating a regular array of air hole of t wo different sizes disposed about a pure silica core.The degeneracy of two ortho normal polarized-modes of the fundamental mode was removed.This creates a possi bility to attain a modal birefringence of at least one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional high birefringence fibers.A beat length of 0.4067mm i s obtained at the wavelength 1540nm.We can obtain much higher birefringence and larger difference of group time delay by choosing different structure parameter of fibers.The numerical results are in very good agreement with the results of e xperiment.

Abstract:Hollow-core fibers have demonstrated record performance in applications such as high-power pulse delivery, quantum computing, and sensing. However, their routine use is yet to become reality. A major obstacle is the ability to maintain the polarization state of light over a broad range of wavelengths, while also ensuring low attenuation and single-mode guidance. Here we simulated, fabricated and characterized a single-mode polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. The birefringence was achieved by introducing resonators of different thicknesses, thereby creating reduced symmetry in the structure. The measured group birefringence of 4.4x10-5 at 1550 nm is in good agreement with the calculated group birefringence from the simulations. This corresponds to a phase birefringence of 2.5x10-5 at 1550 nm. The measured loss of the fiber was 0.46 dB/m at 1550 nm. With its simple structure, low loss, and broadband operation this polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber is a serious contender for applications in gas-based nonlinear optics and communications.

Abstract:We report on the birefringence of photonic crystal fibers as functions of fiber structure parameters and incident wavelength. It is found that the sign of the fiber birefringence can be changed by controlling the incident wavelength. The guided-mode coupling properties of the dual-core photonic crystal fibers are highly engineerable by tailoring the birefringence. New types of polarization splitters based on the photonic crystal fibers are presented.

Abstract:Due to the light-guiding mechanism of hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARFs), the low overlap between core modes and anti-resonant layers poses a challenge in achieving high birefringence. To address this issue, we propose three high-birefringence HC-ARFs with an elliptical core and varying cladding compositions and conduct a detailed optimization and analysis for structure (c). Simulation results demonstrate that structure (a) and structure (b) provide high birefringence, broadband, and low-loss transmission properties. Specifically, structure (a) achieves a birefringence greater than 1.3×10−4 over a 680 nm wavelength range, and structure (b) achieves a birefringence greater than 1.6×10−4 over a 580 nm wavelength range, both maintaining fundamental mode (FM) loss below 1 dB/m. Structure (c) enhances birefringence by an order of magnitude and offers excellent single-polarization properties by introducing high-refractive-index material. At 1.55μm , structure (c) achieves a birefringence of 0.98×10−3 , with a low FM loss for x-polarization of 0.01 dB/m and a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 57450. Additionally, structure (c) exhibits low bend loss in the x-direction, with only 0.06 dB/m for a bend radius of 6 cm.

Abstract:We report a new kind of polarization splitter based on dual-core photonic crystal fibers. The polarization splitter has a symmetric directional coupler configuration. Each core exhibits high birefringence, which gives rise to an adequate difference in the coupling lengths for the two orthogonal polarizations. A 1.7-mm-long splitter is obtained with the splitting ratio better than - 11 dB and a bandwidth of 40 nm. The relationship between the length of the polarization splitter and the diameter of the air hole in the middle of the two cores is discussed. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We propose a kind of square porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for polarization-maintaining terahertz (THz) wave guidance. An asymmetry is introduced by implementing rectangular array air holes in the porous core of the PCF, and ultrahigh birefringence and low effective material loss (EML) can be achieved simultaneously. The properties of THz wave propagation are analyzed numerically in detail. The numerical results indicate that the proposed fiber offers a high birefringence of 0.063 and a low EML of 0.081 cm(-1) at 1 THz. Moreover, a very low flattened dispersion profile is observed over a wide frequency domain of 0.85-1.9 THz. The zero flattened dispersion can be controlled. It is predicted that this PCF would be used potentially in polarization maintaining and dispersion management of THz waves. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose a high-birefringence twin-core hollow optical fiber, which is composed of two rectangular Ge-doped cores, annular silica cladding, and a large central air hole. The rectangular cores are weakly coupled with the air hole and arranged in the same silica cladding. The mode birefringence in single-mode operation of 1.55 mu m reaches 2.48 x 10(-4), which is comparable with traditional panda polarization maintaining fiber. By introducing an extra stress zone, the mode birefringence can be improved further by two times. The high birefringence of the twin-core hollow fiber is induced by strong asymmetry of the waveguide structure. The characteristics of the guiding mode, birefringence, and evanescent field are analyzed numerically by full-vector finite-element method. The effect of geometric and material parameters is discussed. The proposed scheme of twin-core hollow fiber can overcome the polarization fading effect and signal cross talk occurring in traditional multicore fibers and is much desirable for improving the performance of in-fiber integrated interferometers and biochemical sensors. Abstract:Abstract A PCF (photonic crystal fiber) with high birefringence and single-mode polarization retention over a wide wavelength range is designed and studied. The birefringence and polarization retention characteristics of the PCF base mode were studied using FVFEM (full vector finite element method) and APML (anisotropic perfect matching layer) as boundary conditions. The simulation results show that by rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the horizontal axis by 45°, and then rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the longitudinal axis by 45°, the birefringence of the PCF obtained is as high as 4.7 × 10−2, and it has good single model ability, which can be used for various optical devices.
