Abstract:Hollow-core fibers have demonstrated record performance in applications such as high-power pulse delivery, quantum computing, and sensing. However, their routine use is yet to become reality. A major obstacle is the ability to maintain the polarization state of light over a broad range of wavelengths, while also ensuring low attenuation and single-mode guidance. Here we simulated, fabricated and characterized a single-mode polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. The birefringence was achieved by introducing resonators of different thicknesses, thereby creating reduced symmetry in the structure. The measured group birefringence of 4.4x10-5 at 1550 nm is in good agreement with the calculated group birefringence from the simulations. This corresponds to a phase birefringence of 2.5x10-5 at 1550 nm. The measured loss of the fiber was 0.46 dB/m at 1550 nm. With its simple structure, low loss, and broadband operation this polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber is a serious contender for applications in gas-based nonlinear optics and communications.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to achieve and maintain the polarization state of light in hollow - core fibers while ensuring low loss and single - mode transmission. Specifically, the goal of the paper is to develop an anti - resonant hollow - core fiber that can maintain the polarization state of light in a broadband range, so as to overcome the limitations of traditional hollow - core fibers in practical applications.
### Problem Background
Hollow - core fibers show great potential in fields such as high - power pulse transmission, quantum computing, and sensing due to their unique characteristics. However, their practical applications are limited in the following aspects:
1. **Maintenance of Polarization State**: In traditional solid - core fibers, the polarization state can be controlled by introducing stress rods or increasing the ellipticity of the fiber core. But in hollow - core fibers, since light mainly propagates in the air core and has less interaction with the surrounding materials, it is difficult to achieve polarization control by traditional methods.
2. **Low Loss and Single - Mode Transmission**: In order to achieve effective signal transmission, it is necessary to ensure that the fiber has low - loss and single - mode characteristics. This is especially important for broadband applications.
### Solution
To solve the above problems, the author designed and fabricated a new type of anti - resonant hollow - core fiber. By changing the thickness of some resonant cavities to break the symmetry of the structure, the birefringence effect is introduced. The specific methods are as follows:
- **Design Principle**: A standard anti - resonant hollow - core fiber consists of a circle of capillary resonant cavities with the same diameter and thickness surrounding an air core. In the fiber designed in this paper, the thicknesses of two opposite resonant cavities are different ( \( t_1 = 210 \, \text{nm} \) and \( t_2 = 610 \, \text{nm} \) respectively), which reduces the rotational symmetry of the structure and thus introduces birefringence.
- **Performance Verification**: The effectiveness of this design was verified through numerical simulation and experimental measurement. The results show that at a wavelength of 1550 nm, the group birefringence of this fiber is \( B_G = 4.4\times 10^{-5} \), the phase birefringence is \( B_P = 2.5\times 10^{-5} \), and the loss is 0.46 dB/m.
### Significance
The design of this new type of anti - resonant hollow - core fiber not only realizes the maintenance of the polarization state in a broadband range, but also has the characteristics of low loss and single - mode transmission, making it have broad application prospects in fields such as gas nonlinear optics and communication. Compared with the traditional high - birefringence hollow - core photonic band - gap fiber (HC - PBGF), this design significantly reduces the transmission loss while maintaining birefringence and has a wider working bandwidth.
In conclusion, this research provides an innovative solution to solve the key problems in the practical application of hollow - core fibers and is expected to promote their wide application in more fields.
