Abstract:In this article, we proposed a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) ring resonator based on a spatial coupling method, and the component is only 22 × 30 × 6 mm 3 . When using a 7-core photonic crystal fiber with a mode field diameter of 10um, a ring resonator with the measured finesse of 18 can be built, indicating that the coupling loss is as low as 0.41 dB. Compact and low-loss closed resonator is accomplished using a highly integrated free space silicon optical bench manufactured by deep silicon etching and tiny optical lens package technology, which promotes the practicality of the HCPCF gyro. In addition, two important factors affecting the spatial optical coupling efficiency, the lens type and the fiber mode field size, are investigated in this article. The obtained results are instructive for all spatial optical coupling systems.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.

Abstract:A novel hybrid polarization-maintaining (PM) air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBF) ring resonator is firstly demonstrated by using a conventional solid-core PM fiber optical coupler formed by splicing a section of PM air-core PBF into the resonator. Due to Fresnel reflections exist at the two junctions between the air-core PBF and the solid-core fiber, the forward output signal of this hybrid ring resonator is the normal resonant curve with the superposition of the lightwaves that experienced even numbers of Fresnel reflections and the backward output signal is composed of lightwaves that experienced odd numbers of Fresnel reflections. Rigorous derivations of the forward and backward output signals are given out. The biggest resonant depth and finesse of the hybrid air-core PBF ring resonator predicted are 0.352 and 6.3 respectively by assuming a splice loss of 1.8 dB per junction. These predictions are finally confirmed by testing both the forward and backward output signals of the hybrid ring resonator. With the countermeasures against the influences of the odd numbers of Fresnel reflections, a bias stability of 0.007°/s is successfully demonstrated in a hybrid PM air-core PBF ring-resonator gyro.

Abstract:Hollow-core fibers have demonstrated record performance in applications such as high-power pulse delivery, quantum computing, and sensing. However, their routine use is yet to become reality. A major obstacle is the ability to maintain the polarization state of light over a broad range of wavelengths, while also ensuring low attenuation and single-mode guidance. Here we simulated, fabricated and characterized a single-mode polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. The birefringence was achieved by introducing resonators of different thicknesses, thereby creating reduced symmetry in the structure. The measured group birefringence of 4.4x10-5 at 1550 nm is in good agreement with the calculated group birefringence from the simulations. This corresponds to a phase birefringence of 2.5x10-5 at 1550 nm. The measured loss of the fiber was 0.46 dB/m at 1550 nm. With its simple structure, low loss, and broadband operation this polarization-maintaining anti-resonant hollow-core fiber is a serious contender for applications in gas-based nonlinear optics and communications.

Abstract:A hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) design based on hybrid silica/silicon cladding is proposed for single-polarization, single-mode and high birefringence. We show that by adding silicon layers in a semi-nested HC-ARF, one of the polarization states can be strongly suppressed while simultaneously maintaining low propagation loss for other polarization states, single-mode and high birefiringence. The optimized HC-ARF design exhibits propagation loss, high birefringence, and polarization-extinction ratio of 0.05 dB/m, 0.5 × 10-4, >300 respectively for y-polarization while the loss of x-polarization is >5 dB/m at 1064 nm. The fiber also has low bend-loss and thus can be coiled to a small bend radii of 5 cm having ≈0.06 dB/m bend loss.

Abstract:Arguments are more or less persuasive depending on the values their outcomes promote and demote. This idea, closely related to Perelman’s ideas work on argumentation, has been formally modeled by Bench-Capon in his well-known Value-Based Argumentation Frameworks, based on Dung’s abstract argumentation. In this paper, the question is addressed how arguments about which values are promoted and demoted can be modeled. A proposal is made to model Value-Based Argumentation Frameworks in DefLog, a language that extends Dung’s abstract argumentation, while keeping central definitions such as preferred and stable extensions. Since DefLog allows the modeling of support of support, attack of support, support of attack, and attack of attack, it becomes possible to model arguments about whether a value is promoted or demoted in case an argument is accepted.

Abstract:In this article, we constructed a ring resonator using a polarization-maintaining hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) with a spatial coupling scheme, which includes a beam splitter and two pairs of even aspheric lenses. We developed a pioneering algorithm that can identify the polarization axis of the polarization-maintaining hollow-core fiber based on its cross-sectional image, enabling us to achieve an axis identification accuracy of 0.2°, and achieved a resonant curve with a finesse of 7. Without introducing additional polarization control components, we achieved the control of the polarization state inside the resonant ring, suppressing the secondary eigenstate of polarization successfully. This provides a new approach to polarization-maintaining hollow-core fiber coupling in a ring resonator.

Abstract:A novel five-tube nested double C-type single-polarization hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) is proposed for single-polarization single-mode, ultra-low loss, and broadband characteristics. Different tube thicknesses are introduced along the orthogonal direction to couple the x-polarized fundamental mode (FM) to the silica modes (SMs). At the same time, the y-polarized FM is tightly bound in the core, achieving a high polarization extinction ratio (PER). In order to achieve large bandwidth, a layer of high-refractive-index silicon material is coated on the inner surface of the cladding tube. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed single-polarization HC-ARF has the highest PER at 1 . 55 μ m with a remarkable value of 162486 so far, while the y-polarized FM loss is only 1.4 × 10-3 dB/km. However, the single-polarization bandwidth remains limited. By optimizing the structural parameters on single-polarization bandwidth, the HC-ARF at 1 . 55 μ m for single-polarization single-mode transmission is obtained with a high-order mode extinction ratio (HOMER) and PER of 2891, 9531, respectively. In addition, a remarkably high single-polarization bandwidth of up to 150 nm is achieved with ultra-low confinement loss (CL) as low as 2.8 × 10-3 dB/km. Furthermore, the proposed fiber exhibits good bending characteristics, with a bending loss of 6.7 dB/km at the bending radius of 5 cm in the x-direction.

Abstract:A single-polarization (SP) coupler based on air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) is proposed and numerically simulated. The physical mechanism is the decoupling phenomenon occurring at special separations between the cores of the dual-core PBFs called decoupling points. The coupling length of one polarization in the coupler tends to be infinite while the coupling length of other polarization remains in normal level. The coupling ratio for the primary polarization can vary by adjusting the length of the coupler since the other polarization is always decoupled out at any length of the coupler. When this novel SP coupler is incorporated into a PBFs based fiber ring resonator, its unique polarization property is theoretically simulated. In this full-PBFs configuration, the SP coupler functions as the power splitter and the polarizer simultaneously. By the finite element method, the feasibility of the SP coupler to filter the secondary eigenstate of polarization (ESOP) propagating in the resonator is proved. And the performance of the SP coupler to suppress the temperature-related polarization fluctuation in the resonant fiber optic gyro is promised to be more significant to the in-line polarizer integrating in the resonator. Furthermore, the mechanism of decoupling phenomenon in the SP coupler and the influence of polarization-axis angular misalignment are discussed. In conclusion, an optimized SP coupler can couple the primary ESOP properly, and a polarization extinct ratio larger than 30 dB can be achieved within the angular misalignment of 0.9 degree. The aforementioned unique properties make this novel SP coupler attractive for the resonant fiber optic gyro.

Abstract:Relying on the long-distance mode retention capability of hollow core fibers (HCFs) to achieve particle capture and advancement has become a breakthrough in optical tweezers research. This first requires the HCF to get a balance long distance and pure mode. However, the unique light guide mechanism and complex drawing process make it a difficult question to decrease the number of the allowed modes. In this paper, a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) that only supports pure TE 01 mode over 100 nm bandwidth covering the C + L band with the lowest loss of 10.2 dB/km is proposed. The core wall is used as the only control variable to control the coupling position of surface modes (SMs) in the bandgap to filter unwanted modes and achieve stable single-mode transmission in the fiber. The thick core wall allows the fiber to be crimped to a radius of 0.25 mm. Moreover, characteristics such as mode conversion and manufacturing tolerances are also discussed.

Abstract:A ultra-wideband highly-birefringent Bragg layered photonic bandgap fiber (BL-PBGF) with concave-index cladding is proposed and demonstrated, by incorporating PBG effect with Bragg multilayers for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The proposed BL-PBGF contains honeycomb capillary cladding and elliptical core with horizontal asymmetry for birefringence. By innovatively introducing three modified silica capillary layers with different refractive indices, the cladding with concave-convex refractive index distribution is combined, providing superior characteristics for optical polarization implementation, such as confinement loss, bending loss and birefringence. Results show that the confinement loss stays around 2 dB/km level within ultrawide 180 nm wavelength range, basically 3 times wider than conventional PBGF. The birefringence maintains at the order of 10−3across the entire bandwidth and the maximum value reaches 2.5 × 10−3. The bending loss at 1550 nm is significantly reduced to below one third of the conventional uniform index PBGF when the bending radius is less than 3.5 mm, and maintains below 1 dB/km level when the bending radius is beyond 10 mm. The proposed universal BL-PBGF has great potential in minimized freestanding fiber coil and small footprint fiber optical gyroscope applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated a novel large-mode-area multi-resonant all-solid photonic bandgap fiber (AS-PBGF). Based on the combination of the multi-resonant structure and leakage channel, the structural parameters are specifically designed for conventional applications of fiber lasers around 1 μm wavelength. Through the stack and draw technique, the fiber is fabricated successfully and the hexagon core is measured to be 46 μm in the corner-to-corner direction. The transmission spectrum exhibits a broad bandwidth from 970 nm to 1180 nm in the 3rd photonic bandgap (PBG). Bending loss lower than 0.1 dB/m with a 5-m-length fiber is obtained in the case of bending radius R > 25 cm. By employing the spatially and spectrally resolved imaging (S2) method, robust single-mode (SM) operation of the fiber is verified within the whole PBG. In addition, we also report a phenomenon about the abnormal variation of M2 within the low loss region of the 3rd PBG. The evolution of beam quality within the 3rd PBG appears as a U-shaped curve rather than a constant. Based on the measured M2 and S2 results, a preliminary conclusion about the relationship between the beam quality and SM characteristics in AS-PBGF, which is quite different from that in conventional SIFs, is demonstrated experimentally for the first time.
Broadband high birefringence and single-polarization hollow-core anti-resonant fibers with an elliptical-like core

Abstract:Due to the light-guiding mechanism of hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARFs), the low overlap between core modes and anti-resonant layers poses a challenge in achieving high birefringence. To address this issue, we propose three high-birefringence HC-ARFs with an elliptical core and varying cladding compositions and conduct a detailed optimization and analysis for structure (c). Simulation results demonstrate that structure (a) and structure (b) provide high birefringence, broadband, and low-loss transmission properties. Specifically, structure (a) achieves a birefringence greater than 1.3×10−4 over a 680 nm wavelength range, and structure (b) achieves a birefringence greater than 1.6×10−4 over a 580 nm wavelength range, both maintaining fundamental mode (FM) loss below 1 dB/m. Structure (c) enhances birefringence by an order of magnitude and offers excellent single-polarization properties by introducing high-refractive-index material. At 1.55μm , structure (c) achieves a birefringence of 0.98×10−3 , with a low FM loss for x-polarization of 0.01 dB/m and a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 57450. Additionally, structure (c) exhibits low bend loss in the x-direction, with only 0.06 dB/m for a bend radius of 6 cm.

Abstract:A broadband hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler based on a dual-hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (DHC-ARF) embellished with semicircular silver nanowires is proposed. Semicircular silver nanowires are attached to the outer walls of two cladding tubes along the y-direction in the DHC-ARF to excite the localized surface plasmon resonance. By utilizing the mode coupling between y-polarized (y-pol) fundamental mode (FM) and surface plasmon polariton mode to increase the loss of y-pol FM, single-polarization operation can be implemented by filtering the y-pol FM and allowing only x-polarized (x-pol) FM to propagate with low loss between two cores. Finite element method combined with perfectly matched layer as a boundary condition is employed to optimize the properties of the DHC-ARF. Numerical results demonstrate that a hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler is constructed by only using a 1.82 cm long DHC-ARF within a wide bandwidth of 140 nm covering the wavelength range from 1480 nm to 1620 nm, in which the polarization extinction ratio (PER) is lower than − 20 dB and the coupling ratio is within 50 ± 2%. At the wavelength of 1550 nm, the PER reaches − 49.3 dB and the loss of the coupler are as low as 0.22 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler exhibits the widest bandwidth so far, which is at least 12.7 times that of the current reports. This broadband hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler has great potential in polarization-sensitive fiber systems.

Abstract:The remarkable recent demonstrations in ultralow loss Inhibited-Coupling (IC) hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs) place them as serious candidates for the next-generation of long-haul fiber optics systems. A hindrance to this prospect, but also to short-haul applications such as micromachining, where stable and high-quality beam delivery is needed, is the challenge to design and fabricate an IC-guiding fiber that combines ultra-low loss, truly and robust single-modeness, and polarization-maintaining operation. Design solutions proposed up to now require a trade-off between low loss and truly single modeness. Here, we propose a novel concept of IC HCPCF for obtaining low-loss and effective single-mode operation. The fiber is endowed with a hybrid cladding composed of a Kagome-tubular lattice (HKT). This new concept of microstructured cladding allows to significantly reduce confinement loss and, at the same time, preserving a truly and robust single-mode operation. Experimental results show a HKT-IC-HCPCF with a minimum loss figure of 1.6 dB/km at 1050 nm and a higher-order modes extinction ratio as high as 47.0 dB for a 10 m long fiber. The robustness of the fiber single-modeness was tested by moving the fiber and varying the coupling conditions. The design proposed herein opens a new route for the accomplishment of HCPCFs that combine robust ultralow loss transmission and single-mode beam delivery and provides new insight into the understanding of IC guidance.
